A Jacquard Loom The Jacquard loom was invented by Joseph Marie Jacquard in Lyon in 1801 to weave textiles, mainly silk. It stored weaving programmes in a series of punched cards. In my last post, I talked about weaving. This is an old two-harness loom. The harnesses hang from the upright part called the castle. The levers at the bottom are used to alternately raise and lower the harnesses which pull different sets of warp threads allowing the weft to make a pattern in the cloth and to interlace the weft and the warp to make the cloth.

The Fine Line Creative Arts Center, supported by the Schacht Tools for Schools Grant, has broadened its weaving curriculum to include the use of Flip looms.
