Artificial light has been used to mimic longer day length and hasten the onset of seasonal reproductive activity in mares. Extending the day length to about 16 hours is now a common management tool on horse breeding farms.

Fescue and Broodmares: fescue related toxicity includes some of the following common problems: 1) Late term abortions or mares may carry foals for 30 to 40 days longer than normal. 2)Thickened placentas. Retained placentas leading to infection, laminitis and difficult rebreeding. Foals may be unable to escape the sac and suffocate. 3) Produce little or no milk and the production of colostrum can be decreased. 4)The mare may not exhibit the typical signs of foaling.
