We hurriedly trotted with our tripods towards Swiftcurrent lakeshore in front of the historic Many Glacier Hotel. The previous night we had setup camp in Many Glacier Campground. There were high hopes about getting a good reflection shot of Grinnell point in the morning on Swiftcurrent lake. The mountains stand tall and imposing, their peaks rising high into the sky like jagged teeth. The red and dark colors of the landscape are bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun, creating a striking contrast with the cool pinkish fog that blankets the valleys below. There is a sense of unease in the air, as if the mountains are alive and watching, and yet there is also a strange tranquility that pervades the scene. Sandstone is nature's art medium. Formed in layers and sculpted by the elements, it comes in every shape and color. In the Vermilion Cliffs of southern Utah and northern Arizona, ancient winds created large sand dunes of alternating layers. Gravity and water caused them to flow and bend, creating swirls and folds like cream in coffee. The dunes eventually petrified.
