During WW II, my father served in the Navy, and my mother worked as a secretary. My father contracted a lung disease while on service in Africa and died in 1960 when I was seven. My mother happily lived to a ripe old age and enjoyed discussing her wartime experiences. Her stories included ones of going up to London for jolly weekends at a time when the city was being bombed. When I asked her why she took such risks, she said the Germans were not going to stop her having a life. It is in this context that I became fascinated with WW II.
I love this brilliantly constructed story of love in the time of war by one of the masters of the English language. Drawn, as was much of Greene’s literary output, from his own personal experiences, the affair in question is between up-and-coming writer Maurice Bendrix and civil servant’s wife, Sarah Miles.

Follett is a master at writing compelling page-turners, and this is one of my all-time favorite spy thrillers.
The story is about a Nazi spy in England during World War II who learns some vital information about D-Day. He is unable to transmit this information back by radio, and he has to make his way to Scotland for a rendezvous with a U-boat, with MI5 on his heels.
One of those books you can read in one or two sittings, so gripping is the development of the plot. A great read!
