Why am I passionate about this?

During WW II, my father served in the Navy, and my mother worked as a secretary. My father contracted a lung disease while on service in Africa and died in 1960 when I was seven. My mother happily lived to a ripe old age and enjoyed discussing her wartime experiences. Her stories included ones of going up to London for jolly weekends at a time when the city was being bombed. When I asked her why she took such risks, she said the Germans were not going to stop her having a life. It is in this context that I became fascinated with WW II.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of The End of the Affair

Mark Ellis Why did I love this book?

I love this brilliantly constructed story of love in the time of war by one of the masters of the English language. Drawn, as was much of Greene’s literary output, from his own personal experiences, the affair in question is between up-and-coming writer Maurice Bendrix and civil servant’s wife, Sarah Miles.

A story of passion, guilt, and betrayal as Nazi bombs rain down on London. A very great wartime novel.

WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY MONICA ALI

The love affair between Maurice Bendrix and Sarah, flourishing in the turbulent times of the London Blitz, ends when she suddenly and without explanation breaks it off. After a chance meeting rekindles his love and jealousy two years later, Bendrix hires a private detective to follow Sarah, and slowly his love for her turns into an obsession.

Book cover of Black Out

Mark Ellis Why did I love this book?

This book is the the first in a gripping and atmospheric wartime thriller series featuring London policeman, Detective Sergeant Troy.

Troy has an unusual background for a police officer in that he is the son of an immensely rich Russian emigré businessman. In this story, set in 1944, a man’s severed arm is found on a bomb site. Troy investigates and discovers the arm belongs to a refugee German scientist working for British intelligence.

This is a marvelous thriller from a writer once selected in a Time all-time list of detective authors to savor.

What is this book about?

John Lawton’s debut novel—first published by Viking in 1995, and now being reissued by Grove Press—is a stunning, war-time thriller that cements his place among the greatest crime writers of our era. The first of the Inspector Troy novels, Black Out singularly captures the realities of wartime London, weaving them into a riveting drama that encapsulates the uncertainty of Europe at the dawn of the postwar era.

London, 1944. While the Luftwaffe makes its final assault on the already battered British capital, Londoners rush through the streets, seeking underground shelter in the midst of the city’s black out. When the…

Book cover of Atonement

Mark Ellis Why did I love this book?

A compelling and moving story set partly in pre-war London and partly in wartime  London. Before the war, a jealous, misguided teenage girl accuses her older sister’s lover of a crime he did not commit. This act ruins lives. The lover goes to prison, and the older sister cuts off her younger sister and her family.

By the time the war begins, the younger sister realizes her dreadful mistake and seeks to atone for it. This is an exquisitely written and original story of love, relationships, innocence, and guilt.

Robbie and Cecilia will have crossed a boundary they had not even imagined at its start, and will have become victims of the younger girl's imagination. Briony will have witnessed mysteries, and committed a…

Book cover of Men at Arms

Mark Ellis Why did I love this book?

This is the first in Evelyn Waugh’s famous Sword of Honour trilogy of novels, which is loosely based on his wartime experiences as a middle-aged recruit to the British Army.

The first in the series, set at the beginning of the war, follows the adventures of the author’s protagonist, Guy Crouchback, as he attempts to join up and then becomes an officer. Full of memorable characters and written with Waugh’s typical acerbic wit and elan, this is a classic and one of my favorite books of the period.

What is this book about?

"An eminently readable comedy of modern war" (New York Times), Men at Arms is the first novel in Evelyn Waugh's brilliant Sword of Honor trilogy.

Guy Crouchback, determined to get into the war, takes a commission in the Royal Corps of Halberdiers. His spirits high, he sees all the trimmings but none of the action. And his first campaign, an abortive affair on the West African coastline, ends with an escapade that seriously blots his Halberdier copybook.

Men at Arms is the first novel in Waugh's brilliant Sword of Honor trilogy recording the tumultuous wartime adventures of Guy Crouchback ("the…

Book cover of Eye of the Needle

Mark Ellis Why did I love this book?

Follett is a master at writing compelling page-turners, and this is one of my all-time favorite spy thrillers.

The story is about a Nazi spy in England during World War II who learns some vital information about D-Day. He is unable to transmit this information back by radio, and he has to make his way to Scotland for a rendezvous with a U-boat, with MI5 on his heels.

One of those books you can read in one or two sittings, so gripping is the development of the plot. A great read!

His code name was "The Needle." He was a German aristocrat of extraordinary intelligence-a master spy with a legacy of violence in his blood, and the object of the most desperate manhunt in history. . . .

But his fate lay in the hands of a young and vulnerable English woman, whose loyalty, if swayed, would assure his freedom-and win the war for the Nazis. . . .
