“Reynolds gives us a much-needed reason for hope. The gardener, the conservationist, the city planner, and the nature lover will all be inspired for this wonderful book shows how thousands of even small wildlife friendly gardens can provide habitat for embattled wildlife around the world.” —Jane Goodall, Phd, DBE, Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute & UN Messenger of Peace

Individuals can’t save the world alone. But if millions of us work together to save our own patch of earth—then we really have a shot. How do we do it?  With Acts of Restorative Kindness (ARK). An ARK is a restored, native ecosystem. It’s a thriving patch of native plants and creatures that have been allowed and supported to re-establish in the earth's intelligent, successional process of natural restoration. Over time, this becomes a pantry and a habitat for our pollinators and wild creatures who are in desperate need of support.

These ARKs will become the seeding grounds for our planet’s new story. They will be sanctuaries for our shared kin—the rooted and unrooted—and safe havens for the magic and abundance of the natural world. Most importantly, the ARK-building actions are within our control and laid out here in
We Are the ARK. In these inspiring pages, discover how one person’s actions can effect big change in this world. Even the tiniest postage stamp patch of land matters! Together we are building a patchwork quilt of life that will wrap its way around this planet.

This beautifully written and illustrated book is an eye-opener and wake-up call - especially about what our gardening practices are doing to the Earth and web of life. A must-read - especially if you're in the habit of planting non-native plant species, weeding, and using pesticides in your garden. Mary believes that we are guardians, NOT gardeners, and, if we want to save the planet, we must start with our own patch of land (no matter how small - even a window box). Her advice throughout the book makes perfect sense and is easy to follow. Her first book, THE GARDEN AWAKENING, is another excellent and informative read.

If you are interested in ways to save our earth this is the book for you. It is easy to understand and has exceptionally, artistic pictures. The author describes a grassroots effort that will make you want to jump right in and save your little piece of the world. Scientifically backed narratives are informative and leave you thinking. Loved it.

This book is the most beautifully written and accessible of all the many books I've studied about native habitat support and restoration. And the illustrations are so gorgeous they are worth framing! I leave the book out on my coffee table just to gaze at them. I have purchased other copies to give as well-appreciated gifts.

I think this is an interesting and informative read if you are new to the topic. I know people who work on searching lost seeds to restore biodiversity but I never thought of doing something similar when it comes to gardens.
It made me think and appreciated it.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine

In hindsight, this was not the book for me. This is a simplistic manifesto, not detailed instructions. I ordered it because a gardening influencer wrote about it, thinking it would be helpful. It might be, to someone who has absolutely no idea about how important bees are or how pesticides destroy both flora and fauna. But for me, this was a major miss. I don't need manifestos: I need actual hands-on tools and strategies to convince my neighbors to stop spraying their lawns. Planting "ark signs" will not affect change.

The book is very much the authors personal manifesto. It lacks sound advice on how you can perform what she is preaching or evidence of what she is saying. It comes off as “do this because I said so”. The artwork in the book is a distraction and could easily be used to show actual photos of this change she is speaking of. I wanted to like the book, but it just didn’t work for me.

I have seen a couple of reviews with this same problem, and needless to say it was disappointing. I got this book for my mum, and she happened to off-handedly mention that some of the paragraphs were in the wrong order or unfinished. I came here to check if anyone else noticed, and it seems to be common enough. Hopefully they can get this fixed soon.
