As a moderate, who has some liberal leanings, and having read a review from Damon Linker, I eagerly looked forward to reading this book. However, I was very disappointed. The book is a bit confusing----not knowintg whether it wants to be a more phiisophical book, self-help tome, or historical analysis. It tries to be all three, and doesn't accomplish any of these very well. While the second half is a bit better than the first half, overall I did not care for the author's writing style, and most importantly, did not find his arguments compelling. If you are looking for a book that has a much more compelling argument for liberalism, particularly from a moral points of view, buy and read Moral Politics by George Lakoff, which is a classic. Finally (and this is a personal pet peeve of mine I admit). the author makes the point over and over that he is a proud athiest, and very often separates his argument for "liberalism all of the way down" from the "liberals AND" people who are liberals AND something else (like being a theist, which I am) or people who have conservative leanings or conservatives outright but consider themselves "classical liberals." He presses this point so hard, that he really turns off a large group (even liberals who differ with hiim on the AND part), and basically argues all you need is liberalism all of the way through to live well. So, if you are an athiest or agnostic, you'll probably enjoy the book, but if you are a "liberal AND" anything else, I think you will find the book tiresome and even offensive in some parts. I'm open to being offended on occasion, but the book was not well writted or argued enough for me to enjoy it regardless. Moral Politics makes the case much better, and finds a definite place to include "liberals AND" people in the mix----even liberal Christians. Get Moral Politics instead of this book.
