Fortunately, this may very well be the best and most affordable of the so called "Disney Sketchbook Series." The artwork is sublime. Marc Davis brought his extensive knowledge of animal anatomy to greatly improve the rendering of the deer over those in Snow White. He also studied emotional baby expressions from a psychology book to incorporate them into the drawings. Very anthropomorphic, you can feel human emotions coming out of these drawings without compromise to the essence of animal renderings. That's a pretty amazing accomplishment. But then add Tyrus Wong's abstract Pastels and watercolors as layout influences, and you have a Disney masterpiece. You also have mind-blowing artwork. This is a wonderful sketchbook that effectively surveys the height of the golden era of animation. It pleases artists and fans alike. I would have liked to have seen more layout work, particularly the work of Tyrus Wong. Fortunately, such work exists in the Johnston and Thomas "Walt Disney's Bambi" book which can also be purchased used. For what I value in Disney artwork, this is equaled or surpassed only by the art of Fantasia.
