William Boyd seems to be an author who does not repeat himself. His prose style is fine; his characters are quirky. 'A Good Man in Africa' harks back to the British Colonial era and shortly after. Using darkly ironic details, the author delineates very clearly why 'England Lost The Empire.' The Foreign Service in this oil-rich fictional African nation is short-sighted and inept almost beyond belief. Mr. Boyd sketches one 'howler' after another! Certainly the novel is entertaining.

I found it to provoke a few wry thoughts in my masculine mind: the protagonist is no smarter than many of us and he makes as many wrong choices and follows as many wrong lines of reasoning as any of us 'guys.' For those of us who think we are the only faltering few, we at least realize we have plenty of company.

A very good story that has one eager to find out what happens next. The main character is certainly not a hero and one feels rather irritated with him at times. The other characters in the book are rather one dimensional. William Boyd is a very good writer when he tells a story but when he tries to add humour he overdoes it and the story loses validity.

Never read a book where I detested the main character as much as Morgan Leafy. What a jerk. Dumb, insensitive
and an awful British Foreign office employee. Imagine my surprise when I read from Amazon reader comments that it was supposed to be HUMOROUS, and Leafy was supposed to be funny. Wanted to quit on the book half-way through, but had to see how it would come out in the end. Having said all this, I must admit Mr.Boyd is a really good writer.

Great book for a beach vacation.

This story is satisfactory, for light reading entertainment. My curiosity was piqued by the indication that our hero was an 'ordinary' sort of chap, beset with human
foibles and, to put it mildly, wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer when it came to dealing with his superiors and others. I recommend this book.

Such a wonderful portrayal of the British colonists in West Africa. I think this book should be listed as a classic and be on the recommended lists for schools. This is the second book I have read by Boyd and I have to say I think he is quite brilliant. His characters are so vivid they bounce off the pages.
The mark of a great writer ,in my humble opinion, is to be able to tell a story of relatively ordinary day to day happenings and turn it into a "can't wait to get back to it" event.
This book will not appeal to those who like paced action as indicated by some of the reviews, but if you enjoy (and understand) subtle British humour, wonderful characters and top class writing I urge you to buy this delightful book.
It is very funny in parts and I DID laugh out loud many times. Goodness.....poor old Morgan Leafy; he can't take a trick 'as the saying goes.'A very amusing book that I WILL recommend to anyone who enjoys fine literature.

Enjoyed this book set in the context of British colonial practice, very entertaining, readable and so descriptive you feel you are there

It is easy to see why this book won two important literary awards. Boyd has produced a highly readable, literate, darkly comic story of the British colonial experience. The characters are superbly developed and believable, the plot is extremely well paced and engaging, and the strengths and weaknesses of the human character are fully explored. A great piece of literature, very highly recommended. Boyd's many other novels, including An Ice Cream War, The New Confessions, Brazzaville Beach, The Blue Afternoon, and Any Human Heart are equally terrific. Boyd is clearly one of our most talented contemporary writers of fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars A marvellous debut to launch an illustrious career.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 3, 2015
What a brilliant novel! I first read it in the early 1980s, perhaps not long after it was first published, and thought it was marvellous. Thirty years later it still seems just as entertaining, with a dazzling mix of humour and tragedy, with a healthy dose of parody of the overwhelming self-satisfaction and unassailable rectitude of European diplomats in post-colonial West Africa.

Morgan Leafy, the central figure, is a brilliant creation. Dissolute, lazy and prey to rampant frustration, he spends most of his days struggling to get by doing as little as he can get away with. (I wonder why I identify with him so well!) He is, however, a decent man at heart, though for most of the book he finds little opportunity to demonstrate his inner qualities.

Life has not gone to plan for Morgan. As the novel opens he is in his third year in Nkongsamba , a quiet region in the hinterland of Kinjanja, an independent West African state that until recently had been under British suzerainty. He works for the odious Arthur Fanshawe who represents all the hidebound attitudes and prejudices that proliferated in the 1970s. Morgan is sinking into ever deeper despair: he is being blackmailed by an ambitious and relentlessly corrupt local politician, the woman whom he had had visions of marrying has just announced her engagement to his younger, better looking junior colleague, and he has contracted gonorrhoea. And then things start to get worse …

Boyd relates the story with his customary pellucid, gripping prose. This was his first novel but he seemed to hit mid-season form almost immediately. Morgan Leafy is not a particularly nice man, but Boyd conjures huge empathy for him as everything seems to go wrong. Corruption abounds. The High Commission is far from blameless in its interventions in local elections, but then most (though not all) of the local politicians are equally opportunistic with an eye on their financial gains rather than the interests of their long suffering electorate. .Overall the novel is exceptionally funny though there are also moments of great poignancy and sensitivity, and even Morgan manages to rise to some occasions and act for the greater good.

This was a fine start to what has proved to be an illustrious writing career.
