The Black Comet (ブラック彗星, Burakku Suisei^?) is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It was a comet that passed the earth every fifty years, and was where Black Doom commanded his army, the Black Arms. It was eventually destroyed by Shadow the Hedgehog with the Eclipse Cannon, bringing an end to Doom's reign of terror.

Description[]

Appearance and architecture[]

The Black Comet was a small Solar System body with a thick, dark gray material covering it with various tentacle-like parts coming out from the side, making it vaguely resemble a jellyfish. The comet had some red trails and small spikes on it.

The inside of the Black Comet was a series of large, open caves with a purple hue and gray stone walls. The floors were lavender-colored and formed a pattern. Some surfaces were made out of a bright, canary-colored material that lit the area. This material was used in long corridors and on square-ish floors, sometimes also showing the Black Arms' symbol. The Black Comet was filled with large stones, thick, long tentacles, large incubators containing Black Arms, and even sculptures of Black Doom's face on the walls.

Defenses and features[]

The Black Comet was basically a very fortified stronghold. The place was filled to the brim with various types of Black Arm soldiers defending it, as well as gun ships that release said soldiers to take out any intruders. Other armaments included Cell Cannons, laser fields, and shield switches that controlled the comet's defenses. In addition, parts of the Black Comet were flooded with a purple/reddish, very lethal substance the center core that would instantly kill anyone who sunk in it, including some of the Black Arms themselves.

For all its defenses, the Black Comet's low velocity made it unable to enter the atmosphere of a planet like earth. The only way to transport the comet to and out of the surface, as such, was through a super-charged Chaos Control achieved with the seven Chaos Emeralds.^[1] In addition, the gas emitting out of the Black Comet was a chemical weapon in itself; upon contact with the earth's atmosphere, it would cause a chemical reaction that would create a gas that would paralyze one's nervous system.^{[note 1]} Only Black Arms were immune to this effect, though the effects were only temporal.

Past[]

The last time the Black Comet passed by earth, Black Doom made a pact with Gerald Robotnik in order to create the Ultimate Lifeform, Shadow the Hedgehog. Black Doom would provide the genetic material Gerald need to create Shadow, and Shadow would in turn help Black Doom in his quest to collect the seven Chaos Emeralds. Gerald, however, did not trust Black Doom and suspected his plot to obtain the Emeralds. As such, Gerald designed the Eclipse Cannon to destroy the Black Comet when it returned, before he was incarcerated on Prison Island by G.U.N. when they raided the ARK, killed Maria, and caused Gerald to descend into grief-stricken madness and swear revenge on them.

Shadow the Hedgehog[]

Fifty years later, during Shadow the Hedgehog, the Black Comet once again approached earth, and the Black Arms began the final phase of their mission to collect the seven Chaos Emeralds and enslave the humans. Since the Black Comet did not have enough speed to make it to earth's surface on its own, Black Doom took advantage of Shadow's amnesia, tricking him into finding the seven Chaos Emeralds.

Once Shadow brought the Emeralds to Black Doom, the alien overlord used Chaos Control to teleport the Black Comet down to earth, where it released a gas that coated the planet and began paralyzing the inhabitants. As Sonic, his friends, and Eggman remained frozen, ready to be eaten by a horde of Death Leeches, Black Doom explained how the Black Arms would keep them and the humans as livestock, using them as slaves and a food source. However, Black Doom's plans were foiled when Shadow used the Emeralds to turn into Super Shadow and destroyed Black Doom, then teleported the Black Comet back into space where he fired the Eclipse Cannon at it, destroying it and all of the Black Arms inside.
