Turf, (as a verb, turfing) is an important aspect in Splatoon's Turf War mode. In order to turf, the player must have Ink (Keep in mind that by default, ink is at it's maximum until the player starts turfing). Turf has several colors, including:
- Blue
Gameplay featuring turf
- Orange
- Purple
- Green
- Cyan
- Magenta
- Yellow
- Light Green (Replaced by Emerald in several versions)
- Light Pink
- Light Blue

Ink is a required item for turfing. In order to earn Ink, the player can turn to squid form to refill ink. Ink also slowly fills your tank when you are not shooting, even when you are in kid form. Keep in mind that Ink is available from the beginning of the level on it's maximum, and can be obtained easily.

- Originally, Paint and rather Ink would of been the turf marking. There are several weapons in the game that are nods to this.
