It was a more advanced version of the scan grid that had been used by Darth Vader to torture the smuggler Han Solo and by Lieutenant Zuud to torture Jorin Sol. It triggered the subject's pain receptors at random intervals, which would cause them to experience the sensation of being frozen and burned at the same time.

During Rogue Squadron pilot Corran Horn's imprisonment on the prison Lusankya, he was subjected to the tortures of the Inducer by Director of Imperial Intelligence Ysanne Isard.
