"Imperial scientists have been unavailable for comment, but reports of mutations of other common species have been surfacing on Talus as well."
Coronet Gossip[2]

The painted spat was a subtype of carrion spat, an avian creature native to the Corellian system.[1] A mutated variant,[2] this creature was larger, stronger and more resistant to average carrion spat. Somewhat similar in appearance to the carrion spats of Corellia, the painted spat differed: The coloration of the skin was much darker with pronounced horizontal stripes along the back; the bony structure protruding from the mandible was not, from appearance, a true beak (the jaw did not resemble a beak at all, rather, resembling a reptilian jaw).[1]

History[]

The existence of the painted spat was first reported on Talus during the Galactic Civil War.[2] In 1 ABY,[3] adventurous spacers traveled to Talus in order to hunt painted spats. At least three of these animals were seen roughly 3,500 meters from Nashal Starport.[1] Their large 'beaks' were sometimes used as trophies.[1][4]

Painted spats were later spotted on Corellia as well. After the Battle of Yavin, the painted spat Gravefeather and its pack of enraged carrion spats attacked farms on the outskirts of Coronet City, such as Pol Handerin's farm.[5]

Behind the scenes[]

Painted spats appeared in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[1] prior to the game's closure on December 15, 2011.[6] Painted spats were added to the game with the "Publish 18," released on June 15, 2005.[7]

  3. The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
