Shang Tsung is the secondary antagonist of the Mortal Kombat Legends series. He is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Quan Chi) of Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge and the secondary antagonist of both Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms and Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind.
Shang Tsung is once against an evil sorcerer serving the Emperor of Outworld Shao Kahn. Shang Tsung shows up in the first film hosting the tournament for Shao Kahn so that he can invade and conquer Earthrealm. After Shang Tsung loses and gets a vicious beating from Shao Kahn for his failure, he returns in the second film to continue assisting Shao Kahn in his efforts to conquer Earthrealm.
Shang Tsung shows up again in the third film, now serving the "King" of the wastelands Kano while secretly plotting to overthrow him.
He was voiced by Artt Butler, who also voiced Cyrax in Battle of the Realms.
Biography[]
Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge[]
Shang Tsung starts off the film by hosting the tenth Mortal Kombat tournament on his island along with his champion Goro. Shang Tsung is doing this to allow his master Shao Kahn to conquer Earthrealm like he has done to so many other realms before. Shang Tsung is first seen showing off Goro by having him fight with a kidnapped Jax who Goro continues to beat up even long after Jax is clearly defeated and unable to fight. Shang Tsung continues to have Goro beat Jax with Goro eventually ripping off Jax’s arms, Shang Tsung enjoys it and orders Goro to finish Jax off, with him only being saved by Raiden, who exploits the fact the tournament hasn’t officially started.
Shang Tsung uses every method he has to make Earthrealm lose the tournament, most notably hiring the Black Dragon to eliminate the Earthrealm warriors. Quan Chi attempts to betray and kill Shang Tsung to release Shinnok but Shang Tsung subdues him. Eventually Liu Kang confronts Goro and is nearly killed before Goro is killed by Scorpion. Scorpion is able to exploit the fact he is now champion to forfeit the match and give Liu Kang the victory. Shang Tsung retreats to Outworld at an angry Shao Kahn who tortures Shang Tsung as punishment for his failure and orders him to get his forces ready to invade Earthrealm.
Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms[]
Shang Tsung shows up next in the next film Battle of the Realms. Shang Tsung throughout the film is assisting Shao Kahn in the final Mortal Kombat tournament that he and Raiden have set up that will determine the fate of Earthrealm. Shang Tsung competes in the tournament personally and during it he goes up against Kurits Styker and kills him forcing Styker to rip his own head off.
Shang Tsung later goes up against Liu Kang. Shang Tsung looks like he is winning most of the fight but Liu Kang is able to gain the upper hand. Shang Tsung expects to be killed but Liu Kang spares him and Shang Tsung survives to fight another day.
Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind[]
In the film, Shang Tsung returns yet again. After Earthrealm was destroyed by the revenants, which were caused by Kano, Shang Tsung teams up with Kano and assists him in everything he does. Shang Tsung in reality is plotting against Kano and judging by what Kano says later has already made multiple attempts to do so.
Shang Tsung gets his chance when he is ordered by Kano to watch the members of the black dragon when they go against Kenshi. When Shang Tsung overhears Kenshi’s last name he recognizes it. After Kenshi is defeated Shang Tsung manipulates Kenshi by pretending to be a kind old man who wants to help him grow stronger. Shang Tsung leads Kenshi to the well of souls that was built by Kenshi’s ancestors. Shang Tsung has Kenshi open it which brings up a bunch of souls that blind Kenshi and Shang Tsung absorbs all the souls to gain back his power, which is up to hundreds at least. Shang Tsung then leaves Kenshi for dead.
Shang Tsung goes and attempts to overthrow Kano and take his place as King of the Wastelands. Shang Tsung fights with Kano with him killing several Black Dragon members in the process, it seems like Shang Tsung is winning as he gets the upper hand and tries to absorb Kano’s soul. However, it doesn’t work as Kano has no soul to absorb any more, Kano then retaliates and kills Shang Tsung, putting an end to him, seemingly for good.
