Bannerlord - Missing Formations Explained

This article explains the issue of Missing Formations in Bannerlord. Sometimes commanding an army is not easy.

Mount and Blade: Bannerlord is a game that allows you to become a medieval lord or lady. The production has amassed thousands of fans. It certainly helps that this title is a genre unto itself and trying to find similar games is rather hard and doomed to failure. However, Bannerlord is not perfect and sometimes there are mechanics that are not quite clear. In this article, we will tell you what the missing formations message is and how to deal with it.

Bannerlord – Missing formations

There are 4 types of units in Bannerlord:

  1. Infantry,
  2. Range,
  3. Cavalry,
  4. Horse Archer.

Before the battle, there is an opportunity to split them into formations. There are 8 of them in total (symbolised by the “brown” rectangles around the screen). If you wish, you can assign the aforementioned unit types to them, as well as a combination of Infantry + Range or Cavalry + Horse Archer. Of course, you do not have to use all troop slots.

The Missing Formation message appears when you have some type of unit that is not assigned to any squad. This can happen, for example, when you led an army consisting of only cavalry, but between battles you recruited some additional infantry. Then, during the next fight, there is no place for them in your army - you have to create it.

Under Missing Formation (in the top middle of the screen) you can see the symbol of the unit you are lacking. You need to pick one empty slot for a formation and click the big plus. This will bring up a menu. Simply press the appropriate icon and the troops will automatically be assigned. You will then be able to start the battle.
