Interesting - but not very comforting to most gamers - news about Warner Bros.' gaming segment is coming to us from a meeting between representatives of the U.S. giant and investors regarding the company's financial results for the third quarter of 2023 (via ResetEra).

We learn from it that Warner Bros. Games has become an extremely profitable segment of the company, which, especially in the last three years, has brought huge profits - numbering in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Not surprisingly, the company intends to invest more heavily in video games, seeing a huge earning potential in this branch of entertainment, especially among young people.

In connection with this vision, Warner Bros. plans to turn its biggest brands into multi-platform live-service games in the coming years - with constant updates and partially free content - to eventually introduce more ways to monetize them.

"Ultimately, we want to increase engagement and monetization in longer cycles and at higher levels. We have already introduced specific solutions [this may include, for example paid "fatality" for Mortal Kombat 1 - editor's note]. We are now in the scaling phase, and we see significant opportunities to generate more revenue after the [game's] purchase," a Warner Bros. representative said during a meeting with investors.

High sales of Warner Bros. Games

On the occasion of the conversation in question, we learned a bit about the sales of the largest games under the banner of Warner Bros. Games.

  • Mortal Kombat 1 was said to have sold nearly three million copies since September's release, by the time Q3 2023 financial results were discussed.
  • In contrast Hogwarts Legacy is still the publisher's best-selling game. Although no new sales figures were provided, but it was assured that players have already spent more than 700 million hours in the game from the Harry Potter universe.

In summary, the paid finisher for Mortal Kombat 1 - criticized vociferously by the gaming community - is probably a harbinger of the upcoming policies of Warner Bros., which, it seems, has spotted a tasty morsel in the game industry.
