All that stuff about how "I saved your life so now your life is mine" just raised my hackles. There were men like that in those days--still are; but that doesn't make it a good choice in a YA novel of that time, or this time, for that matter.(less)

My guess from the context was reflections of the candles in the windows at night, that make it look as though rabbits or other creatures are carrying candles around in the yard. Charlotte Hi Janet, the series was written in the 1920s but the story takes place around the turn of the century (late 1890s to early 1900s).
