Junior's Home Cooking: Over 100 Recipes for Classic Comfort Food

Rate this book
For more than 60 years, Junior’s Restaurants have been serving their customers scrumptious classic American dishes before they top off their meal with a decadent dessert or a slice of its award-winning cheesecake.

In Junior’s Home Cooking, Alan Rosen and Beth Allen bring Junior’s into home kitchens across the country, with recipes and stories that have been passed down through generations of the Rosen family. The family-friendly dishes have been scaled down and professionally tested so that every home cook can turn out a meal just like the made-from-scratch versions featured at Junior’s. In Junior’s signature style, all dishes are delicious, “bigger and better than ever,” and perfect for both family meal and holiday table.

Just like Junior’s other three books, this one will feature sidebars throughout on “The Junior’s Way”—tips and techniques to ensure the recipe turns out just as it should. In addition, ideas for “super-sizing” a recipe to feed 8 or more will be included. Junior’s fabulous recipes will be showcased by more than 40 full-page, four-color photographs.

Its that time again where I get obsessed with cookbooks!!!! And netgalley has quenched my need and rocked it!
 photo arc_zps18b56b1b.png
This cookbook is junior home cooking
My belly is so full from trying so many recipes but I held out for this book
4 Comfort stars

This is my kind of cookbook COMFORT FOOD!!! The recipes are meant for a large crowd or a hungry family of four. It gives you a recipe and then ssays if you want to make it juniors way I have never been to Juniors which seems to be a popular east coast destination but I love their tips….
I love all their dressings it helps you make everything from scratch and the amounts make about 2 cups of dressings
Now this french soup recipe has me salivating! I am a sucker for french onion and the use of sherry here makes me very happy. Their recipe for matzoh ball soup make my jewish heart soar because this is exactly the way to make it and many people just serve matzoh balls in a chicken stock.
My only draw back is there is a lack of pictures =[
This is a cookbook you want the hardback version of it doesn’t display correctly on an ereader/ipad/phone

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I have wanted to get my hands on a copy of this book for a long time now. I absolutely love Junior's cheesecake (my mom used to order their cheesecakes off of QVC on tv when I was younger, and I'm a cheesecake nut, so I always wanted to make my own), but I never seemed to get a chance to read this book.

This is definitely not a book for those trying to count calories or watch what they eat (a recent development in my house, but darn, I STILL wanted to make those cheesecakes!) There are quite a few different sections of food, from sandwiches to soups, salads (never saw that coming!) to desserts. The food looked good, especially the bar-b-q sliders (pair those with some onion rings, and you've got one great-and kid friendly-meal).

The desserts...oh, the desserts. Raspberry mousse cheesecake? Pumpkin cheesecake? Mini chocolate chip cheesecakes? Yes, please. Not to mention other desserts, such as carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and banana walnut loaf with brown sugar topping.

While I won't be using this book on a regular basis (not that healthy), I will be pulling it out for special occasions, and when I need a good slice of cheesecake!

So I guess this book has recipes based on a restaurant in Brooklyn. The recipes were pretty common. Just like really big portions. All the recipes looked like things that came right off the menu at a local diner. The recipes did not look bad, just nothing really jumped out at me as something I would want to recreate at home. I guess if I had been familiar with this restaurant then maybe it would have been different.

Alan Rosen, third generation owner of the infamous Junior’s Restaurant dynasty has compiled some of the restaurant’s history making recipes into a cookbook. The front cover caught my eye immediately: fried chicken (drumsticks-my fav), macaroni and cheese, salad, cheesecake. I thought what a great little every day dinner. I must say, though most ‘self-proclaimed chefs’ boast they can cook everything, I will not. I have tried and tried and tried again, here goes my confession to the world: I can bake, smother, roast, and make chicken salad but I CAN NOT FRY CHICKEN! Now with that said, I am happy that Mr. Rosen & Ms. Allen are sharing and “-bringing Junior’s, and the foods we’re known and loved for, into your home.” Especially the fried chicken recipe for the ‘every day chef’. They have included after each recipe ‘The Junior’s Way’ notations “…buy only clams that are closed…not…chipped, broken, damaged.”I like the headings for each section and what can be found inside:
Appetizers “we’ve taken some of their signature favorites and turned them into great party foods.”: Deviled Eggs with variations – hickory smoked, hot and spicy, smoked salmon
Signature Salads “…we haven’t forgotten the dressings...”: Pickled Beets & Onions, Junior’s Red Skin Potato Salad, Lemon Vinaigrette, Asian Dressing
Super Soups “The soup of the day changes daily….now you can make seven….special soups any day you like…”:French Onion Soup with Swiss cheese, New England Clam Chowder
Sensational Sandwiches “The Po’Boy comes with both fried shrimp and fried oysters-“:Chicken Parm Subs, Combo Reuben, Junior’s Club
Everyday Brunch “Invite a few friends over and proudly serve brunch—the Junior’s Way.”:
Junior’s Cheesecake French Toast, Potato Pancakes with Homemade Chunky Applesauce,
Daily Specials “…many items are so special they’re always on the menu, every day!”: Baked Individual Meat Loaves with Mushroom Gravy, Iron Skillet Ham Steak with Red-Eye Gravy
Sides “These sides are so tempting that folks will want seconds!”:Junior’s Macaroni & Cheese, Creamed Spinach, Alan’s Pan-braised Vidalias, Fried Green Pickles
The Bread Basket “We’ve also included…..Club Rye Onion Loaf and Braided Challah…”:
Quick Cheese Biscuits, Hush Puppies, Doughnuts Any Time!
Save Room for Dessert! “…by baking one of their famous desserts today!”: Whoopie Pie Cheesecake, S’Mores Cupcakes, Key Lime Meringue Pie.

The steps for the recipes range from four to nine with the majority falling into five or six category. The cookbook also contains menu and measurements charts to help you along the way. In addition, it has great recipes for your next round-table (or square-table) gathering. I am going to try the Combo Reuben sandwich ‘Junior’s Way’. My mom used to make me Reuben sandwiches her way, cannot wait to compare! I recommend this book for all ‘chefs’ and for those of us who, such as myself, still has not mastered a few things.

No, this is not a cookbook for younger people but a collection of yummy comfort food recipes from a Brooklyn, New York institution - Junior's restaurant!

The concept is simple: provide a host of tried and trusted recipes, give a bit of background to the restaurant, the recipe or its characters and repeat. And there is nothing wrong with that. Many of the recipes have been tweaked, making them easier for cooking in a home kitchen but the authors state that they remain true to the original.

Split into chapters of appetisers; salads; soups; sandwiches; brunch; daily specials; sides; breads and finally dessert there will surely be something for everybody here, whether you've visited the restaurant and are searching for a special dish or you are a total Junior's newbie and just want something tasty to munch on.

Of course, there will be a lot of classic recipes here that you will find in many other cookbooks but will you get them made in the "Junior's Way"? The reader gets to learn about what Junior's do to the recipes to make them (possibly, dependent on your opinion) stand out from the rest. As this reviewer has never visited Junior's he cannot possibly comment but boy does he want to visit after reading this book! Even simple things like "Mini Pigs In The Blanket" are oh-so-moreish. Don't read this book on an empty stomach. Not every recipe has its own photograph - which is a shame - as they really do draw you in and your tummy can start rumbling.

Even though this book is clearly aimed at a U.S. audience it is a shame that the publisher couldn't find enough space to add metric measures alongside their U.S. imperial equivalents. The other omission - a lack of a clear preparation and cooking time - is harder to forgive. Yet the recipes are well written, clearly presented and easy to follow. Just follow the numbered steps and you surely can't go wrong.

After a mass of recipes the book is rounded off by some menu suggestions and an index - one hopes that the index is very detailed and accessible as it is critical in a book of this size yet the index wasn't present in this pre-release copy. Before one picked up this book one was a tad sceptical as to whether this is a "me-too" book or something more unique. One fell in love with it and the recipes and we weren't bribed with an all-expenses paid to New York to sample their culinary delights either.

One remains eternally grateful that the publisher didn't put any nutritional information and the dreaded calorie count beside each recipe. This is one omission we can approve of in this book!

I am an avid cookbook collector. I have over 1500 cookbooks, and believe it or not, I actually cook from them!! I actually own duplicates of some of my favorites as those much-loved books tend to get a little messy and I like having a "clean" copy that I can use to lend out to my friends when they are looking for a good recipe.

I am also no stranger to to Junior's, as I own his Cheesecake cookbook as well and have been using the recipe for his original cheesecake for awhile now. I guess I should mention that it ALWAYS gets rave reviews!

For those of you who are not familiar with Junior's, it is a well-know diner-style restaurant in Brooklyn New York. I personally have never been there or anything, but from the recipes I have tried from the cookbooks, I would definitely make it one of my stops if I ever got the chance to travel to New York.

Junior's Home Cooking is in my opinion a must-have addition to any cookbook lover's collection. There is over 100 recipes that are presented with easy step-by-step instructions that will be perfect for even a beginning cook. I also love the tips that are included in with the recipes, and am always thrilled to find another little "secret" that I would have never imagined using. The book is also filled with yummy photos of many of the recipes - the only change I would make is to provide pictures for every recipe in the book.

While these recipes are definitely not for the calorie-conscious, you should be able to lighten them up if you want by subbing a few ingredients. My family prefers to have them exactly as written - full of the yummy goodness that comfort food is known for.

Junior's Home Cooking provides us with a decent variety of recipes from appetizers, soups and salads to decadent desserts. I am definitely looking forward to making the braided challah - it looks fabulous and I can't wait to try it! Also a big plus with this cookbook is that all the ingredients can be found at your local grocery store or supercenter - you won't find anything that you will need a gourmet grocery for. That is a definite plus for people like me who live in a somewhat rural area with only a small handful of grocery stores and a Walmart.

I would definitely recommend any of the Junior's cookbooks by Alan Rosen. There is also a dessert one that is on my wishlist as well. It is one of the books that I know that I will use again and again.

I received this ebook copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I would like to thank the publisher for the opportunity to review this cookbook.

I love this cookbook! Junior's is a well known small chain of restaurants in New York with one restaurant in a casino in Connecticut, yet somehow I hadn't heard of them. I know-where have I been? I so want to visit just to try their famous cheesecake in all of it's many forms. However, cheesecake is not the only thing being served up at Junior's and if this cookbook represents what they are doing up there in New York, I seriously need to make a road trip. This cookbook is chocked full of easy to follow, simple, and drool inducing recipes. I can't even list what I have book marked to try, there are just too many. But I will say that their version of mac and cheese , meatball marinara, and their version of pickled cucumbers are all on that list. Don't worry, there are cheesecake recipes to be tried as well! One of the many things that I liked about this cookbook are the tips that they have for many of the recipes that they label as "The Junior's Way". The tip can be anything from stating that the roasting time for beets can be decreased if you wrap them inside foil packets to how to choose the best apples to make their home made apple sauce. They also have menu suggestions at the end of the book to help plan for gatherings. This cookbook has many lovely color photos that add to the drool factor and provides additional motivation to try these recipes that look so homey and comforting. I know that I am gushing over this book, but it may be one of my favorite finds this year. If you are looking for a cookbook full of comfort food that will be a cinch to make pick this one up and you won't be sorry! I will definitely be making and posting recipes from this cookbook to the blog.

For full disclosure I received a copy of this cookbook in exchange for an honest review.

Book kindly provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I've decided it's time for me to stop eating so many microwaveable meals and start learning how to cook real meals. I figured it would taste a heck of a lot better!

I was attracted to this particular cookbook because these recipes have been used in restaurants for over 60 years, so I figured they had to be good! Also, the food on the cover looked simple and delicious.

The recipes are creatively organized much in the same way you'd see them on a restaurant menu (i.e., appetizers, salads, soups, sandwiches, brunch, specials, sides bread, dessert). The recipes are very well organized with exact amounts of ingredients, followed by serving sizes, and very clear instructions. There are also quite a few recipes with the most appetizing photos accompanying them!

The only problem I've had, as someone that didn't cook much in the past, is that I didn't have a lot of the seasonings and herbs required for some of the recipes. I'm also not a fan of mayonnaise and there were a decent number of recipes that called for that ingredient.

I would recommend this book for people like myself that don't have a lot of recipes under their belt. Quite a few of these foods are those that people might already know how to make (e.g., fried chicken, steak, ribs, meat loaf, etc.). This could also be good for any fans of Junior's Restaurants, since these are their recipes!

Home-style comfort food

I've never been to New York, nor have I heard of Juniors; but I do know that Juniors is known for its home-style comfort food. I was delighted to receive a galley book of the Junior's Home Cooking: Over 100 Recipes for Classic Comfort Food by authors Alan Rosen and Beth Allen. Their cookbook is filled with recipes prepared or inspired by the Junior's restaurant. Rosen states his cookbook contains recipes signature Junior's recipes and recipes specially developed for this cookbook.

You'll also find side bar information called "The Junior's Way" which offers a tip on how to make the recipe so it turns out perfect.

At the end of the book you will find menu ideas such as Alan's Backyard Barbecue, Star-Spangled Picnic On the Patio, Hanukkah --- Festival of Lights Dinner.

Some of the recipes you will find in Junior's Home Cooking include:

Deviled Eggs (not served at the restaurant but included in their cookbook)
Brooklyn-Style Buffalo Shrimp
Mini Pigs In the Blanket
Junior's Cobb Salad
Junior's Blue Cheese Dressing
Combo Reuben
Junior's Cheese Blintzes with Fresh Strawberry Sauce
Junior's Pull-Aparts
Original New York Cheesecake

Recommend.

This is a straight-forward guide to classic comfort food recipes. It has a lot of the basics but I would say that most of these, you probably already have a recipe for if you cook much at all. There are no exotic ingredients listed. I didn't find a lot of restaurant quality recipes included. That being said, I think it would make an excellent wedding gift or a gift for someone just starting to cook. But beware, these are full fat, full calorie comfort food recipes, not for the healthy eater. However, there are a few gluten-free recipes included. (I received a digital copy of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an unbiased review).

If I were to clean out my cookbook shelves and eliminate every cookbook that had recipes for the foods I grew up with--the comfort foods I enjoy--except for one, this would be the book I save.

With this small sampling of the many recipes I found inside, I think you can see why: deviled eggs; Brooklyn-style buffalo shrimp; red skin potato salad; grown-up tuna mac; roasted tomato soup; chicken parm subs; New York cheese steak; southern fried chicken; Maryland crab cakes; lobster Newburg; mashed candied sweets; original Ne York Cheesecake and doughnuts.

This is book is treasure filled with recipes. It would make a nice present too!

I read this book through NetGalley. Very entertaining cookbook with a great atmosphere. The food photography was well done. Some of the recipes looked really tasty - I will probably make some of the easier recipes sometime in the future.

My only critique of the book is that there should be some lower calorie, lighter alternative recipes. Full fat mayo and sour cream are delicious, but I can't eat those everyday and stay a healthy weight! If you have no concerns about your weight, these recipes are wonderful.

I received an arc from Netgalley.
I liked the book.
I didn't know anything about this place but if one day I go to the USA I want to visit this restaurant.
I think that the recipes are curious and original; I love the variations they make from classic recipes. They also are easy to make.
I think the whole edition it’s great, I love the photos because they help you to see the final results and I love the Desserts recipes, I will try to make them.

I simply love Junior’s recipes, and I can’t say enough about His cheesecake recipe. This is my second purchase of one of his cookbooks and this one is truly AWESOME!!! It contains wonderful, yet practical recipes for family favorite comfort foods. You don’t need any exotic ingredients to make these dishes, and Junior includes helpful tips on how he makes their version of the recipe. Easy to follow recipes for classic family favorites, makes this a MUST HAVE cookbook for every home cook.

I was sent a copy of the book for review through Net Galley, as always, all opinions are my own.

I’ve never been to Junior’s, their restaurants are based in New York, but they sure do dish up some serious comfort food. The food is simple, tried and true, just what you want when you need the comfort of home cooking. This isn’t the type of book I would purchase for myself, but it is the type that I think would make the perfect gift for a newly wed or someone just learning how to cook.

After seeing a television program that featured this restaurant, I was so glad to see this cookbook. I knew my grandma would love most of the recipes and couldn't wait to make some dishes and desserts for her. As I expected, she has loved everything I have made thus far. This cookbook is a must have for comfort food lovers!

This was an extremely fun cookbook to read through. I think I looked through it a couple times. So many great recipes in this book. I can't wait to put some of these recipes to use. I bookmarked a ton while I was on vacation.
