The Wolvers #1

The Alpha's Mate

Rate this book
Welcome to Rabbit Creek.... City girl Elizabeth Reynolds hopes to find peace and contentment in the small Appalachian town of Rabbit Creek. Okay, so the bucolic cottage she’s rented turns out to be a dilapidated cabin without phone service, but the people she meets are wonderful. Friendly and down to earth, they welcome her with open arms. It’s just like moving to Mayberry… if Andy and Aunt Bea were wolves. Only an outsider would call them werewolves. They’re wolvers, a community of man/beasts that have lived in these hills since their ancestors emigrated from Scotland three hundred years ago. And that gorgeous Chief of Police, Marshall Goodman, the guy she met while covered in mud and wearing granny underpants? The one who sends her heart spinning? He’s their Alpha and his pack is under attack from outside forces. Elizabeth, being a sane and reasonable woman, wants no part of any of this, but if she refuses to risk her life and her heart, the people she’s grown to care about will lose everything and she'll lose the one man she was born to love.

I was struggling to find a book to read so I decided I’d clear out my to-read list. And I came across this. The reviews were mainly all great so I decided to give it a try.

The older I get the pickier I get and I have to say Elizabeth annoyed me a lot. I hate that she talks out loud to herself (a pet hate of mine). She also seemed really clueless at times. As for the clumsiness I just don’t find it funny. I do however find it annoying.

This was obviously not the book for me. The story had potential of sorts. But apart from Elizabeth being incredibly annoying and clumsy there was no chemistry between her and Marshall.

Holy descriptionville!!! By the end of the first chapter I was so immersed in this story, based on the vivid and filling descriptions that Rhoades uses that I was standing in the middle of the woods with the characters. Even when I had to put the book down to go to work, I never left this world behind. You live this story, you do not read it. The situations are so real that you cannot help but laugh at the ridiculousness or hold your breath in nervousness, hoping that everyone will be alright.

This book is jam packed with action, romance, and true friendships. Not a moment is left dull and no event is ever skimmed over. Everything is clearly portrayed. The novel is also very well written. Rhoades has a way with words that makes you forget that you are reading, and not living, the events in question.

I fell in love with many of the characters the first time that they appeared. They were so vividly portrayed that you cannot help but know them as if they were a real life friend (and believe me, by the end, they may as well be). There were others that I hated with an intensity that should not be possible.

This novel is, by definition, a paranormal romance novel. What I especially appreciated about it was that it was different. Yes, boy falls for girl and they get together. That’s a given. However, the relationship between the pack Alpha and his mate is completely different from anything that I’ve ever read. The Alpha, Mate, pack relationship is also different. Every difference and similarity to the genre helps to pull the story forward and to pull you into the story.

This book is amazing as a standalone novel. Everything begins and ends within its pages. You can see the world outside of the novel, but don’t need to read it to thoroughly enjoy yourself while reading it. That said, am I ever glad that this is the first book in the series. I will definitely be following it as it is written.

Okay this is my first Jacqueline Rhoades book, and I loved it :) This book I could not put down. I read it all in one day. I felt horrible today, but could not put my reader down. She had lots of action, funny misunderstanding that had you laughing, I raged with Lizzie and cried too. I love books that take you on an emotional roller coaster. The main character Elizabeth (Lizzie) has always felt out of place. I loved being part of the journey to her finding where she belonged and that she found that she had more strength than she knew she did. Marshall sounds like a very sexy, handsome man who is loving and caring toward all of the members of his pack. You have family drama, pack conflicts, and the evil guy you want to see lose. I recommend this book to everyone who loves shifter books. Now that I know I love Jacqueline Rhoades books; I will have to be on the look out for more. :)

4.5 Stars!

This was an awesome book! I literally could not put it down! I ended up reading it all in one day! The story was very intriguing and it captivated me from the first page! I laughed so much and was so enthralled in this unusual tale of Wolvers, not werewolves! The characters and plot was very well developed and written and I was very pleased with this book! The only reason I rated it a 4.5 was because there were a few moments when the heroine made me roll my eyes a little at her random silliness. Nothing major though and I would definitely read more form this author!

THE ALPHA’S MATE by Jacqueline Rhoades

THE ALPHA’S MATE is the first storyline in Jacqueline Rhoades new The Wolvers series.

Former librarian 32year old Elizabeth Reynolds was on sabbatical and moving to Rabbit Creek. Locating her new place was a bit of a nightmare, but finding herself in the arms of a complete stranger made everything worthwhile. With her car stuck in the mud and strange animals in the forest, Elizabeth hope she hadn’t made an awful mistake. Spending the night at a complete stranger’s home would take on a whole new meaning when she found herself fighting off a pack of wolves while a fire raged all around.

Marshall Goodman is the chief of police, owns the local specialty mill and alpha male of the pack. His attraction to Elizabeth is instant, but the signals she is sending are confusing all of the males. At some point, Elizabeth is under the mistaken notion that Marshall is already in a committed relationship with his cousin Henry, but it is Marshall who believes she knows they are wolves.

Elizabeth was introduced to the local folks but Charles Goodman, Marshall’s brother seemed to take a special interest in the new resident of Rabbit Creek. Thinking that Marshall was gay, Elizabeth made a half-hearted attempt at seduction, but realized that Charles wasn’t the man for her. But when a beaten and bloody woman is found in her front yard, Elizabeth must contact Marshall hoping to save the young woman’s life. And to Elizabeth’s amazement, she will find a shifting wolf that was once Marshall Goodman. But it will be the women of the Creek that take Elizabeth aside and tell her the story of their wolves.

There was a fight brewing for wolver territory and Alpha. Fires, assaults and bullets wounds would find Elizabeth with a house full of shifters and an injured wolf to care. Marshall was the Alpha and he had to protect his wolves and his territory, and for all intents and purposes, Elizabeth was his to protect.

Elizabeth was an unexpected gift to the Alpha and his Pack. They told her tales of their matings and stories about the townsfolk, and Elizabeth decided to write a story of their lives-without the paranormal content. But Marshall also had a job to do and the marijuana grow-ops were taxing his time and his men.

Charles made it a point to introduce himself to Elizabeth’s family. Suave and sophisticated, Charles hoped to find a mate in Elizabeth, and something about the man drew her like a moth to a flame. As the alpha of his own Pack, Charles was committed to moving forward and modernizing their ways, but animosity between the brothers ran deep and long.

The fight for possession would turn personal. When Marshall was injured trying to protect Elizabeth, it was Max ( the young woman found injured) who would explain the reason for the alpha rage. There was something about Elizabeth that drew the other alpha males around but the circumstances had changed and now it was an act of revenge.

The Goodman family had a gift. As Alpha, Marshall’s gift was needed whenever there were injuries and wounded wolves, but there was no one around when Marshall needed help. Elizabeth knew that only one other male in the family would be capable to heal the man that she loved, and by calling him in, she may have sealed her fate. But Elizabeth believed she was no Alpha’s Mate and insisted it had all been a mistake.

A challenge had been issued for the Alpha position, the Pack and its’ mate, and Elizabeth was the prize. When another alpha claimed the rights by an ancient Pack law, it was up to Elizabeth to figure a way to say Marshall, the Pack and her life. A little research and a couple of friends in high places, Elizabeth found a loophole that would hopefully benefit Marshall’s pack and see the rightful Alpha back in charge.

THE ALPHA’S MATE is a romantic adventure about a Pack looking for a mate for its’ Alpha and thinking they had found her in Elizabeth Reynolds. The major character development is smooth, but there are a number of secondary players that get lost in the mix. Sometimes too many characters and names make for a confusing storyline and at times I had to go back and double check.

Jacqueline’s version of the mating heat adds a twist that at times had me worried as to the direction our heroine was heading, but in the end, the Alpha finds his mate and his heart. The Alpha’s Mate looks at the magical allure of the shifter wolf and why we love our storybook alpha males. A great start to another series by Jacqueline Rhoades.

If you're looking for a well written book that grabs your attention and sucks you in then this is the book for you. Ms. Rhoades has a real talent for combining humor, adventure and romance. Though it could use a good proof reader to fix the typos and it did bog down a little towards the end. Though I've given it a 4 star, if I could I'd give it a 3.5 but since I enjoyed it so much I bumped it up and I would reccomend it to my friends.

For a city girl Elizabeth Reynolds certainly turned out to be tough when she needed to be and I loved that about her. My only problem with her was her thoughts about her weight. That also is my only real problem with this story. It concerns me greatly when I read that she's "plump" and then discover that she is 5ft 3in. tall and weighs 115lbs. That is soooo not plump!!! And then to hear her say, "I'm round enough as it is." and for the H to replay with, "Nothing wrong with a little meat on a woman." This disturbs me because she's thin!!!! I expected the H to tell her she was out of her mind!

I've read many werewolf romances and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised at the differences that Ms. Rhoades built into this world.

So overall this was a good book that made me laugh, cry and grip the arm of the chair in suspense. Therefore, I suggest the next time you're in the mood to laugh and cry all while being held in suspense that you read this book.

In the interest of full disclosure I wish to acknowledge that I received this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

There is a wonderful description to this novel here already, so I won’t bore you with my own attempt to do a re-cap. This was one of the best shape shifter novels I have read in a long time.

The story line was intriguing, the characters were interesting, the descriptions of the area and people is vivid. The author did a wonderful job of painting the word pictures so that I could easily ‘see’ just what she was talking about.
The secondary and tertiary characters were as fully fleshed and well drawn as the protagonists were. I adored the way the author changed the language style, idioms and the cadence of the mountain people’s speech. It was just enough change to see that they were not “city people” but never to the point of having these people look ignorant ofr unintelligent. I love the concept that each type of person (mountain OR city) has their own strengths and each group respects each other because of it.

The story has a lot of humor in it and parts had me nearly rolling on the floor I was laughing so hard. Parts of this novel may scare the pants off you and the bit of mystery will have you pondering things. This book really has it all. The sex is sensuous without being overly graphic and smutty. The romance is almost sweet and I really appreciated that. I’m not always looking for down and dirty in my romance books.

This is definitely going to be on my re-read shelf!

Excellent book!

It wasn't anything I've read before. Very different from the usual take on wolf shifting books. The only thing that kept it from a five were some inconsistencies. I would definitely recommend this to readers who like wolf shifting books. It's for the most part a page turner and the climax is fantastic.

A favourite series, great setting and pace, has a good mix of sad and happy moments. The h is the best kind of feisty, giving herself pep talks to face very tough moments. He's a good alpha and an honourable man. The pack has a great history, and they need their Alpha to have a good mating. It's rather like a fairy tale with the balance of good and evil. Don't understand the low ratings.

This book starts out kinda corny. I was wondering if I even wanted to finish it if the heroine was going to keep embarrassing herself... But it gets better. The characters are well rounded but it takes reading the whole book to learn about them. I generally avoid books where there are love triangles, and for a while I thought this book might go there, but it is more complicated than that. There are lots of 'reveals' throughout the book as the Heroine is kept in the dark for most of the book. This creates intrigue without being annoying. The sex isn't as hot but it is also more 'normal' which I appreciate, as I am getting tired of all the anal sex and bondage and threesomes in romance books these days. It's still pretty sexy and I wouldn't kick Marshall out of my bed! I look forward to the second book!

Loved this audio book

At first I was leary of the narrator she started off very fast but then she slowed down and the story too off.

I loved Lizzy and Marshall. Laughed out loud when they first met. Lizzy in her Granny panties and then Lizzy thinking Marshall has a "partner".

I want to live in Rabbit Creek!

The characters and the legends of the Wolfers is so different then the other shifter story lines. A very nice change.

Can not wait to start book 2 The Alpha's Choice. Charles book.

Stumbled across this gem over the weekend. I highly recommend reading this wonderful novel. I loved the language of the mountain people and the way they lived and cared for one another. The fact that they can change into giant wolves just added to their appeal. Be prepared to bust a gut laughing at Elizabet's coping with everything thrown at her or crying for the troubles they have to overcome. I'll definitely be purchasing Charles' book!

I loved this book!

It has it all... humor, shape-shifters, battles, pack/family, a love story, and hillbillies. Oh, an HEA too.

Ms. Rhoades is a very good author, and the characters were believable. Loved Elizabeth's lists.

Synopsis

Elizabeth Reynolds may have wanted to change her life by moving to a cabin in the woods; but she never expected her new life to begin with a crash and a rescue by the hot sherrif when she was in nothing but her undies. The friendly town takes her in and help her fix up her new place, and everything seems to be going just peachy. It's just too bad that the hottest man she's ever met is gay, and she can't stop running in to him.

Review

I wasn't a huge fan of the cover on this book, and had I not gotten a copy for review I probably wouldn't have read it. That would have been a travesty!
I really enjoyed this story. Sometimes I'm a bit reticent about romances as they can be more love scenes than plot, but while there were hints of the impending passion, there were only two real sex scenes in the book. The story was entertaining; it was fun to see Elizabeth grow into a sassy brassy woman. The town was full of interesting characters, and the love interest was more than just a hunk of meat or a knight in shinning armor. Plus, it's always fun to read a story where the woman gets to decide if SHE wants to be with the man. I've seen way too many stories that left the relationship up to the man lately.
Oh! The best tidbit is the fact that there was an actual explanation for the instantaneous love that appears in so many of the books, and Elizabeth had an issue with it. That may sound strange, but I sometimes wonder what in the world these characters are thinking when they meet someone and fall instantly in love.

My Recommendation

Not for children, the love scenes aren't super graphic, but are best saved for a mature reader. Due to the fact that there was an interesting plot and a sassy female lead, I give it a 4/5 - Wait for a sale/coupon.

Didn't realise I hadn't written a review :O re-reading the series before I go onto the new one so reviews for all books that haven't been done yet to follow.

I've gotta start by saying just how much I actually adore this series. I could quite possibly go on for days about it such is my love for it. The thing is, I love shifter books but more and more recently I seem to be finding ones that are just about sex, shifter sex but nonetheless seriously lacking in storyline. Not these books though, don't get me wrong, they have their share of steamy scenes but even with them they are perfectly balanced in my opinion. Its not all about pushing boundaries or breaking taboos, the quality of the writing and the stories themselves are of such a high standard that those types of gimmicks aren't needed. The alpha's mate is an awesome book. Elizabeth may be out of her depth but she has an enormous amount of backbone and keeps on picking herself back up no matter what. Thats the kind of heroine we can all get behind. Strong smart and independent but not to the detriment of everything else. As for Marshall, he's everything an Alpha should be without being too pigheaded or arrogant. This book really has the perfect balance, it makes me laugh, it makes me cry, and no matter if its the first or fifth time I've read it I always react to the emotion in the story. I could sit and name the side characters that I liked best but it would probably read like a bad oscars speech so I will just say that each one, no matter how often they appeared in the story played their part to perfection. You fall in love with all the personalities and wish you too could move to Rabbit Creek and meet all these wonderful people. This is one of these series that I would recommend to everyone cause I honestly think once you try it you'll get sucked in just the same as the rest of us and not be willing to put it down till you get to the end :)

This was an awesome book. I enjoyed this book immensely! I got this book on auto. if you're looking for a well written book that grabs your attention and sucks you in . Combining humor, adventure and romance. Elizabeth (Lizzie) is a middle class librarian on a career break and the story starts with her suffering a disaster that most women are secretly afraid of. She is rescued by a stranger who turns out to be the local Chief of Police - Marshall, who is tall dark and handsome but supposedly unavailable.
Lizzie rents a cabin in the woods where she plans to write a book. She quickly becomes ensconced in local life and settles in quickly when she discovers a secret that turns her world upside down. this is the beginning of wonderful series, I can't wait to read or listen to the next one.

This is a very well written, fascinating, griping, novel that not only gives a quick historical glance at the world of these mythical quick changing beasts, put into a realistic humanly touching form that is quickly believable, as we are drawn into a complex puzzle that becomes an addicting page turner, you can't put down. This was gifted to me by the author and I can hardly wait for the next installment. How they have endeared themselves and turned enemies into staunch allies even if they turn out to be your brother. Yes that is how twisted and cleverly written this work is and grips you even if you've never had an interest in this genre before. 4.9 Stars in my rating out of 5.0 with a hearty recommendation.

What a breath of fresh air! A wonderful story written with such a sense of humor and kindness. This is what I love about paranormal romance! A marvelous and handsome hero you can love with a heroine you can identify with and would love to be (lol)!

A believable and loveable cast of characters that you can almost see! I want to live in this town or mountain - whatever! This is the kind of story you can really get into! Adventure, love, romance, danger and bad guys and the wolves are good guys! I much prefer this to dark gory stories!

I want to revisit this place many times, I hope this is a series!

love this author and her style of writing!
this book has been sitting awhile on my kindle, it was a freebie and i'm playing catch up with them all.
i love the way Jacqueline Rhoades writes about the characters, thier feeling, emotions and how their mind work themselves out of the problems that they arrive. the descriptions of places, people and situations are brilliant, and i loved the lingo change for the mountain folk. some of thier one liners and saying are brilliant!

while there is some sex and violence in this book, its not too graphic or explicit and very in-keeping with the tale being told.

after reading this i propmtly bought the next two!

Magic on the mountain

Lizzie has quit her job as a Librarian and rented a place in the mountains for a year. She has dreams of becoming a writer and loves romance novels. What she hadn't counted on was wrecking her car on the road to her new place and meeting the local Sheriff on the first night. She also didn't think she would have such a primal reaction to this man. Marshall is everything she would want in a man but the mysteries surrounding him and the neighbors may be too much for Elizabeth to endure.

A shifter romance done right

I adore Jaqueline Rhoades writing style. I love a good paranormal read that doesn’t have the young adult feel throughout. It's absolutlely captivating. Whats not to llike about a city girl who adapts to the country living and can hold her own (not to mention in a shifter community). This made for a action packed, fast and enjoyable read. I cant recommend this series enough.

I quite enjoyed this romance with a werewolf twist. I especially liked how Rhoades gave the werewolf mythology her own take. Not only were the two main characters highly likeable, the supporting characters were also well rounded and contributed to the story, helping to immerse you in the wolver community. Cute, funny, with a bit of action and some steamy scenes, this is a well-written, overall enjoyable read. I'll be checking out book two.

Not the book for me, but if you are a huge fan of pnr it might be the right one for you. The reason I didn't like it are purely personal: a mate bond that makes two strangers jump in bed as soon as they see each other, and the hero. He's the kind of man I can't stand in real life (the 'I'm a gift of god' kind).

IMHO there were also some inconsistencies in the plot.

I'm listening to the audiobook but had to pause for now (about an hour in - maybe DNF permanently, maybe pick it back up later). I'll give this 2.5 stars for now until I have the patience to continue with this book.

The reviews made this seem like a book I would really enjoy but first of all, the narrator is awful. She does the voice parts for other characters excellently but for some reason, when she speaks as Lizzie, she READS the book instead of trying to speak it as the character. I'm not sure how to describe it but it's like someone reading out loud what the words on the pages say.

Second problem that's making me possibly DNF is how ridiculously descriptive the writer is... like every friggin' thing is broken down and listed. It's like the writer had to reach a certain word count and just kept adding unnecessary details about stuff that didn't help the story... descriptive words and sentences that could be edited out. I just think this book could use some serious editing. I am by no means an excellent writer so I'm not nit picky usually when it comes to grammar/writing as long as the story is interesting and enjoyable but the overload of descriptions is just hard to slog through (even when I'm just listening, my mind starts to wander and I stop paying attention to the audiobook).

UPDATE: Okay, I'm 3 hours into the audiobook after I decided to persevere and it has gotten better imo. I think once you get past the 1 or 1.25 hour mark for the audiobook version, it gets less detail and description oriented and more about the characters and plot.

The sex scenes are rather lacking. It's basically fade to black after some vague oral sex to the h. I personally like a little more steam when I read paranormal romance.

I listen to this on audio

The author does an outstanding job writing this in a style that you can see the woods, the hunt it is a very vivid story told in details with a great plot you get so pulled in that you do not want to put down. Before you are even half way through it you start believing there really are werewolves and you wouldn't mind meeting a few. With most books I have read of this nature you have some horny dogs who take what they want. That is not the case with this author she gives you a compelling story of passion, love, fear with strong both male and female characters that you can relate to. She gives you a story filled with thrills and a little mystery that pulls you in.

I loved this story because it was filled with family life, people taking care of people, they have honor, principles and stand up for each other. They are a pack but they are a family out to help each other. You can fill the love of each other, the need to please and be pleased. Everyone gives which is how this world should be, oh you have the bad wolves who are out for themselves. You must have bad with every good...the question is will the good win out against the bad?

I loved watching Elizabeth change and grow into the women she needs to be to stand beside her man. She might be afraid but she learns to stand her ground. I found her to be a delight from her sense of humor to her tempter.

Marshall was a delight very alpha but loving and caring. A man of honor who took care of his pack before he took care of himself. I loved watching him bait Eliza and keeping her tongue tied.

The author gives you wonderful strong supporting characters that puts the pack first. Their only need is to find a mate for their alpha in return they will get their deepest wish. Before that can be they must go down a few rough roads that will leave you holding your breath to the outcome.

I wasn't totally happy with the narrator she wasn't bad, I didn't care for all of her different voice. She isn't my favorite but I have listen to a lot worse. All in all I give her almost a 4. I loved her hillbilly accent and the words the author gave her. I just didn't care for her male voices. I would listen to her again if I found a story that interest me she wasn't that bad at all.

I do love this authors writing style, her words flow easy with her fun loving sense of humor that shows in her writing. I love her characters they have honor, love and give so much of themselves as they work towards one command goal. They work as a team wonderfully all for one and one for all. I loved the confusion, the planning, working out the best way to make things work out. I loved Elizabeth in so many ways I do believe my favorite was when she held the gun on the women on the phone. This book was full of humor that kept me laughing and chuckling through all the whole listen. I loved this story from beginning to the end I can't wait to see what the author has in store for me with the rest of the series. If you are looking for a read with fun loving characters who have honor and the love of their people look no farther the author gives you this and so much more with her passion filled story of the pack working towards the goal of love.

Can a nerdy city girl find peace and contentment in a small Appalachian town called Rabbit Creek? Elizabeth Reynolds certainly hopes so. When she meets a man who instantly understands how out of step she is with her mother's country club set and who offers her a quiet place in the mountains where she can write her dreamed of romance novel, Elizabeth jumps at the chance.

Peace and contentment, however, are a state of mind and Elizabeth soon finds that her state of mind isn't even close to the ideal. The bucolic cottage she's rented turns out to be a run-down cabin without phone service. And that gorgeous Chief of Police, Marshall Goodman, the one she met while she was covered in mud and wearing granny underpants? The one who sends her heart spinning the first time they meet? It looks like he's gay. He's also her landlord and had no idea his cabin had been let. Then there's Charles, Marshall's metrosexual brother, who can make her body feel things she never thought possible. He'd be her mother's choice as an ideal husband. These two men so upset her equilibrium, she's constantly forced to resort to her mental stack of Lists Elizabeth Lives By.

After wrecking her car on a deserted country road and fighting both fire and wolves on her very first night, peaceful isn't a word Elizabeth would use to describe Rabbit Creek. Oh, the people there are wonderful. Friendly and down to earth, they welcome her with open arms. It's like moving into Mayberry... if Andy and Aunt Bea were wolves.

They're wolvers, an ancient species of man/beast that hails from the wilds of Scotland and settled in these mountains when the country was new and whether he wants one or not, their Alpha needs a Mate.

When an antiquated law is invoked, Elizabeth, being a sane and reasonable woman, wants no part of it, but if she refuses to participate, the people she's grown to care about will lose everything and she'll lose the one man she was born to love. There just isn't a List that covers this!

This was almost perfection. A bit different from most shifter/paranormal romances w/very few love scenes, & the relationship between H/h does not really take center stage. Rhoades built an interesting shifter world in this series and her secondary characters have great dialogue and a lot of good old fashioned wisdom. I love that these folks are "salt of the earth" people/wolvers, they make no apologies for the lifestyle they live and they love it, which makes you love it/them as well. I found myself pinning for the simple yet hard working life the folks of Rabbit Creek enjoy, wishing our modern day fast paced lives were a bit more in line with nature and the natural order of things.

A few things kept this from being 5 star perfection. The relationship/romance between H/h was not earth shattering. In most pnr/shifter books the need to mate/claim is so overwhelming & the lovemaking scenes are so erotic/dirty that you almost have to fan yourself, not the case here. That element was missing for me, I like the erotica aspect of pnr/shifter novels...A LOT. Rhoades makes up for it with good storytelling, dialogue, & characterization. The ALPHA was definitely that, but I would have liked loads more of that possessive/obsessive streak to show through. I didn't get that feeling of an all out overriding/consuming passion at all. Don't get me wrong the H/h in this book are totally likeable, their coupling just lacked fire.

The main ingredient missing in this book...HIS perspective/voice. It was all told from the heroines perspective. One of the things I enjoy most when reading romance/erotica is being able to read the guy's side, it's nice to see the ALPHAS squirm and be a bit unsure of themselves, worrying over how the woman may accept/reject him. This was the biggest minus for me while reading the first installment.

Having said all that, I usually just post my rating and move on, but I REALLY liked this book. The storyline, characters (primary & secondary), dialogue, history, "down home" feeling, & the fact that it is an actual novel not some great story that ends in less than 100 pages *side eye*. I've already purchase book 2 "Alpha's Choice" and can't wait to dig in.

I have a new favorite series! The first book in The Wolvers, The Alpha's Mate, was a splendid surprise that had me riveted from beginning to end. This romantic paranormal story is filled with laugh out loud scenes, romantic sex, adventure and lots of quirky, lovable characters.
Marshall and Elizabeth’s first meeting is probably the funniest part of the book. Nothing like being caught in your granny panties covered in mud to make a first impression. Their dialog was witty and peppered with comical misunderstanding. In my personal opinion the best parts of the entire book is all the characters both main and secondary. The all have such quirky personalities and even though they are all up in each other business (Typical small town living!) it’s not in a mean hateful way. From the old to the young, you can't help but to adore each and every one of them.

By the time I went into the third chapter, I was thinking this was going to be a 4-star book but when I finished I knew I had a 5-star on my hands. What really got me going about this book is it wasn’t all about the ”too”. I know that didn’t make sense but let me explain. Marshall wasn’t ‘too’ rich, sexy, dominating, Elizabeth wasn’t ‘too’ innocent, hot, submissive, they weren’t ‘too’ blah-blah-blah. Get the point? No in your face extremes. No over the top of anything. Everything, everyone was just very genuine and down to earth. And let me add while there is an emphasis on mating, it’s so nice to read a book that isn’t all about sex! Not to say there isn’t any but instead of getting flooded with uber details the author has tastefully provided what I would call romantic sex- just enough details to keep things hot without scorching the pages. Really, this was a nice book to get lost in.

If you’re looking for a fun, romantic book to lose yourself in, may I suggest grabbing a copy of The Alpha's Mate by Jacqueline Rhoades You won't be disappointed.
