Shadow & Ghost #1

City of Shadows

Rate this book
Kit Winter does not get caught.

As the most infamous thief in America, Kit enjoys a carefree, transient lifestyle—or, he did, until someone slapped a pair of handcuffs around his wrists and offered him an impossible choice: Rot in prison or join the most dangerous division of the Darkmagic Investigation Agency, the Renegades.

Kit’s pretty sure he chose wrong. The Renegades are the most elite fighters in the world—none more so than their legendary dark-witch-killing lieutenant, Cade Ryan. Kit is utterly outmatched and unprepared for hunting witches and demons through the dangerous, magic-riddled city of Las Oscura.

But when a routine hellhound hunt turns fatal, Kit’s criminal skillset might be the Renegades’ best shot at tracking a deadly new killer through the shadowy underground—and Kit’s chance to earn his place on the team. However, hunting witches is worlds away from Kit’s old life, and if he wants to survive, he’ll need to learn to trust his team—and balance his burgeoning feelings for a certain lieutenant.

This is an action-packed slow-burn romance culminating in some good spice towards the end. Each book in the series will be increasingly spicy as the romance builds.

Book safety, content warnings, and tropes down below. Beware: Ridiculous amounts of quotes incoming.

How is each touch like the first fucking time?

Oh my, I had silly amounts of fun reading this book. Initially I didn’t even want to start it because it’s book 1 of a series with the same couple, but I literally couldn’t resist the blurb, and after like 10 pages there was no way I was stopping unless something terrible happened. An infamous thief gets captured by the police, gets the choice between prison and boot camp, and is eventually teamed up with a super-badass black ops group? Say no more. I can’t even explain how much I’ve been wanting a book exactly like this.

My birth brought no one joy. I can only hope my death brings no sorrow, either. And yet, what pathetic sort of existence ends without grief? Without tears?

It was plenty funny, the action was actioning, the fantasy elements were easy to grasp, and the romance. Y’all, I’m such a sucker for a really good slow burn, and this one was done so well. The small finger touches, looking when the other isn’t looking, when you can feel the connection and relationship slowly build and evolve… If it’s done well I’ll take that over something super spicy and fast burning any day, and this was done very well. The spice we got was quality as well, and waiting for it made it all the more hot when it happened.

He snorts. “And you have absolutely no sense of self-preservation.” I open my mouth to protest, but he’s right. I don’t. Like, none. Zip. Zero. In fact, if I weren’t such an indomitably cheerful soul, I’d probably be suicidal.

It’s a little painful to end on a tentative HFN when the next book isn’t out for months, but oh well. I shall live.

“Mic working?” “Yessir.” “Good. Let’s roll.” My eyes roll before I do because what a very tightwad military thing to say.

Forget shit’s creek and its missing paddle, I’m up a monster-infested mountain with spaghetti-legs and no tour guide.

“Can I tell you a secret?” “My gut says I should say no.” You can’t tell anyone, okay?” My voice scrapes out of my throat in a rasp. “But sometimes, I listen to songs made after 1980. And emo.

We lie like that for a long time. Side by side. Wordless. Pinkie fingers brushing because anything more would feel like … something. And we’re both far too cowardly for that.

Tbh my thoughts are jumbled...

How so much people love this book? I really want to know.
It doesn't have many reviews but from 93 (around that) reviews almost all are 5-4 stars.

Being in this main character head is hell, he's way too immature, too hyperactive, way too dumb in his decision making even if is for is own good.
If an author wants to write a character with a lot of internal thoughts - they need to make them interesting- they need to make them unique - having a character that's always saying the same thing over and over again is tiring .

A character like this - that is driven by ego - is the worst and most annoying, he only wants what he can't have or what other people tell him he can't have, as soon as he have them he doesn't want them anymore, until he does again when he's about to lose them, only to get comfortable again and the cycle repeats, and because apparently he's 5 years old everyone plays the contrary game with him so he can/will do the right thing when needed.

Terrific premise. I wish I could have liked the protagonist; unfortunately, something about the character voice put me off to the point that reading was a real slog. I'm not giving a star rating, because this may well be a me problem rather than a book problem.

Thanks to the author and GRR for the ARC.

3.5 stars I guess??? I liked it but it dragged and Kit, the MC, was annoying at times. I couldn’t buy that he was this wanted criminal, he just didn’t seem like it. I also didn’t feel the chemistry between him and Ghost. Something was missing for me.

Also, the music that the characters listened to was supposed to mean something I think but I didn’t know most of the bands or songs so it didn’t work for me. I understood what the author was going for though.

I think this has a lot of potential and I may read book 2.

"But that’s the thing about me. I’m a survivor. I do what it takes to survive, whatever it takes. And that’s what they don’t realize. He won’t break me. He’ll make me."

Oh Kit Winter, how I adore you! 💙

What a brilliant debut by Lex Veia! I am absolutely blown away! Honestly, I was checking out another book on GRR when I saw the blurb for Shadow & Ghost: City of Shadows, and I requested a copy hoping it was as good as it sounded. And yep, can confirm, it totally was!

Shadow & Ghost: City of Shadows is the first book in the author's Shadow & Ghost series and features our two MCs, Kit 'Shadow' Winter, ex-thief extraordinaire and Lieutenant Zach 'Ghost' Riley, as unlikely partners in an elite fighter group trained to eliminate the dark elements (dark witch/hellhound/shifters) on the periphery of society.

This is urban fantasy at its finest, great world building, all the snarky banter, heavy on plot from start to finish (sooo good), found family and a happy-for-now ending while we wait for book 2.

Spice Note: If you want a smutfest you've come to the wrong place! Shadow & Ghost: City of Shadows is slowwwww burn to the nth degree, but all the feels are there in the build-up and when our boys finally get together it's totally worth the wait! The delectable Ghost has so many layers to his personality, and I can't wait for Kit to slowly peel them all away......

"I heave myself out of the chair and head outside because I need some fresh mountain air. Ghost leans against the wall to the right of the door. Waiting. Waiting for me. That thought shouldn’t make my stomach fizz, make my breath turn a little shallow. Shouldn’t. Does."

Shadow & Ghost: City of Shadows is a must read if, like me, you love:

❣️Grumpy/sunshine
❣️All the banter
❣️Plot heavy goodness
❣️Fabulous characters
❣️Slowwwww burn
❣️Hurt/comfort
❣️Urban fantasy
❣️Found family
❣️HFN

Bravo Lex Veia, I absolutely loved it!

Wow, this was a great surprise, especially as this is a debut book
The plot was promising, and I am so happy that it worked out well.

The storyline and World building were really well done, and I enjoyed diving into this world of dark magic, demons, and witches.

This is told from Kits perspective only, which worked well for this book.... but I hope the next one will be from both their POVs.

I loved the characters, but althea same as Kit, it took me some time to warm up to them. Which just shows what a great writer this author is.

In my opinion, there are some minor inconsistencies in the last quarter but that could be just me.

All in all, this was a great book which I recommend highly.
I really hope the next book is already on its way

Well, this is a debut urban fantasy novel unlike any other. My brain is trying to wrap around this was their first , like really how is that even possible? The way the world is laid put is spellbinding and masterful on a level of some of my favorites, like seriously impressed.
This is a slow burn, low heat, nonstop action tale from start to finish. You are captured in the first chapter and don't let you go until the very end (guys, this is 400+ page book). Ghost & Shadow both made choices that led them on completely different paths, yet when they were thrown together, they meld perfectly. They build their relationship to trust, and eventually, that allows both to be free and happy.
Cannot wait to see what this author has in store for us next.

I loved this book just the right amount of romance and action and many great characters to root for. I loved the characters especially Kit and Zach the romance between them is slow burn with just the right amount of build up I loved it when they finally got together. I just loved Kit's personality it is devil may care to cover up things he can also be carefree and will just roll with many things. I loved how Kit clashed with Zach or Ghost as he is introduced they had so much chemistry from the start it was all so great to read about. I loved the other member s of the unit they all added so much to the story when there were light and heavy moments. The plot was really interesting it starts with Kit being caught and taking a deal to go into the military or go to prison so he meets people is run through the ringer finds out things falls in love other things happen and we have a happy for now ending looking forward to reading more.

Top 2024.
Boy did Lex come out of the gate swinging and she swung high and delivered. What a world she has created. I was totaled sucked in from the beginning. So in love with Kit and Zach.

this book is told from Kitty’s POV only and it works for this book. We’ve got grumpy/sunshine, amazing banter, found family and sooo much more.

Kit is crazy to Zach’s calm. They are a perfect balance for each other. The slow burn was perfect in this book. I loved the chemistry they had together. Kit is fun, smart mouth, smart, and underestimated. Zach is a solider through and through. He’s hooded and masked and mysterious. Ohhhhhh. lol. The is the most feared man for good reason.

I really can’t wait for more of them in book 2. We went on so many twist and turns and surprises.

This book shows that Lex took their time writing this book with the details and making it the best they could and nailed it.

Calm to his crazy sums this up

This is a phenomenal debut novel! It’s got everything you want in an urban fantasy: fantastic world building, an interesting magic system (though I do hope we get a little more on this as the series goes on), and dynamic characters! It’s hard not to love Kit from the very beginning, and it’s extremely obvious that there’s more to Ghost than meets the eye. It’s fast paced and full of action. Just completely adored it!

Addition for just my GR friends: I will say, I LOVE banter, and wit, and a snarky sarcastic MC...but also, I'm really ready for an MM fantasy that does not focus on this. It's been the norm for a while now and I love it, but lets mix it up too!

My freaking heart. This one is for the people who love unique urban fantasy with an epic slow burn romance. I was ADDICTED to this book and these characters. I loved Kit & Ghost with my whole heart and I’m dyyyyying for the next one already!

The fast paced mystery aspect and literally everything about Kit made this never boring. And every little look, touch, grin or hell, VIBE from Ghost had me aching for more.

The first 40% was really good, It was very well written, the world build up was very good and I liked Kit from page one.
I think the first thing that bothered me was Ghost. he was described as a major bada** but all I got was a very silent, athletic nice guy. I never got to feel him, didn't know what he was thinking and didn't get any emotions out of him which turned his character into a boring one.
Another thing that wasn't all that working for me is that I didn't understand (as all of the renegades actually) what was going on around them, all things only add up at the last part of the book and I found myself confused with all the witches, hellhounds and bad guys around.

I must say I also didn't like how easy the table have turned
Overall the action part was stronger than the romance which is reasonable in an Urban Fantasy book but I totally need more feelings than what I got.

CITY OF SHADOWS was an interesting read and while I found the first half to be much better than the second half it was still really impressive for a debut book. The main characters, Kit and Ghost, were really enjoyable and I liked Kit's voice as our narrator; he's sarcastic and a little chaotic but he feels genuine and realistic with all his flaws and sometimes impulsive and selfish decision making.

Where things fell apart a bit was in the world building and pacing for the second half of the book. There's very minimal world building but this is an alternated US that's divided into two countries with magic playing a big role so we really needed more history on how this all came to be. As for the second half it's a lot of hurry up and wait where something big would happen and then there'd be a lull that lasted a little too long. That being said, most of the bonding between Kit and Ghost did occur in the second half so maybe it all just needed to be balanced better. Also, these characters get so beat up throughout and it seems to barely affect them; there's a quick reference to magic helping this but my goodness they must have been all black and blue, especially Kit, because he's constantly getting beat up.

As for the romance, it's definitely a slow burn and I mean that in the true sense. Kit is immediately attracted to Ghost but it takes a long time for things to develop. However, the burn was so good because these two had excellent chemistry and tension and when the spice finally comes it really pays off! These two were very sexy together and I'm curious to see where their relationship will go.

Content Warning: death of a side character; fatphobic descriptors and several jokes

“He moves so fast I don’t have time to think about reacting. His fingers curve over my jaw in the softest touch that somehow still holds me immobile. He leans in so close his lips brush my ear, and that clean desert-rain scent fills my nose. Stops the breath halfway out of my lungs. Sends my traitorous stomach swooping. “Scared little boy.” And he’s gone.”

I just binged read Shadow & Ghost and I absolutely loved it! It’s a slow burn (hold on their folks, it’s worth the wait) between legendary theif Kit Winter and lieutenant Zach Riley. The Ghost and The Shadow. Seriously adore both of these characters as well as their found family that add to the funnier parts of the book.

Like any great Urban Fantasy this book is full to the brim with, magic, paranormal beings and so much action that kept me on the edge of my seat. As well as a boot camp that I think I would really benefit from.

I am very excited for book two which the author has assured will be even steamier.

•EBOOK - 29TH FEB 2024
•PAPERBACK - 27TH FEB 2024

•GENRES & SUBGENRES (This i just my opinions. Some may be wrong and might fit into different genres.) -
The book definitely  is Urban Fantasy, Urban Fantasy Romance.
Having said that in my opinion I would also say it fits into these subgenres - LGBTQIA + , Urban Romance, Urban  Romantasy, Urban Paranormal  Romance, Urban Paranormal  Romantasy,  Urban Contemporary Romance, Urban Contemporary Romantasy.
• POV  - multi point of view

• IS THE BOOK MAINLY CHARACTER DRIVEN OR PLOT DRIVEN? -
I would say both to be honest. The characters that Lex Veia has written are very diverse, and with the main male character, there's a lot of progress with his character development.

• IS THIS BOOK PART OF A •SERIES - •TRILOGY - •DUOLOGY  -
it's going to be a series

• CAN THE BOOK BE READ AS A STANDALONE? -
Maybe with it being the 1st book in the series, and you didn't want to carry on with the series. Also, not really. I read the book and loved it, so I need to know what happens next ... 😆😉

• IF YES, WHAT'S THE NAME OF THE SERIES/TRILOGY/DUOLOGY? - City of Shadows. Shadow & Ghost

• WHAT BOOK NUMBER IS THE BOOK IN THE SERIES/TRILOGY/DUOLOGY? - Book 1

• IS THIS BOOK LGBTQIA + ? Yes, it is.

• TROPES - Age Gap, Grumpy sunshine, action-packed,  mystery, suspense, opposites attract (or as i like to say like chalk and cheese 😂), slow-burn plot, slow-burn romance, hurt, comfort, neurodivergent MC, thief, Fated mates, banter, found family.

•TRIGGER/CONTENT WARNINGS - minor bullying/ hazing,  very descriptive sexual content/scenes/intimacy, and sexual talk/banter, violence, gun violence, killing, drugging, death of a side character, injury to a main character,  implied parental abuse spoken from past tense,

• This is just a little extra warning from me, I also feel the MC is full of hyperactivity with talking & physically MC his head just being mentally all over the place and messes up alot and is impulsive etc (I believe the MC is ADHD, being ADHD myself i feel i can mention this.)
• Also, although there isn't a lot of spicy time, the actual spicy time content is very descriptive of what they are doing. So I would definitely  say this book is a read for over 18 years old.
**************************
• WHAT DID I THINK OF THE BOOK? -
Well, I loved it.  In fact, it was freaking brilliant.  I NEED more! 😆
Kit is, to me, a very loveable character. He is an infamous thief in America. He gets caught and basically given an ultimatem, which is rot in prison, or join the most dangerous  division of the dark magic investigation  agency/team/family called the Renegades.
So kit joins the Renegades,  feels like he doesn't really fit in, wonders why he was picked etc kit also wonders fid he make a mistake joining the Renegades, because those fighters in the team are the most elite fighters in the world.
Kits lieutenant  Zach Riley is also  legendary for killing the dark witches and hellhounds.  Kit trains very hard. I think he wanted to give up at points, but he didn't he carried on.
I feel the way kit is written he's ADHD, i feel i can say this because  I too am ADHD. The character of Kit came across as I was reading the book was, he had anxiety alot, he's hyperactive with his over thinking, his talking, the self doubt he had, he was really impulsive, usually puts his foot in it alit, doesn't usually think before he speaks alot of the time, just blurts stuff out, I mean he's full of banter which is good sometimes. On the other hand though it gets him into alot of sticky situations 😆 (OK get your minds out of the gutter im not on about that kind of sticky 🤣😉, i know what your thinking - if youve read the book 😂😉)
Kit is literally a volcano waiting to erupt. He puts himself in danger a lot without thinking, that is just Kit being Kit. That's him being himself. Being ADHD - Neurodivergent  is not necessarily  a bad thing. Yes, he can be an over talkative  pain in the bum (honestly though that is me 😆🤣 too. I talk to my husband & daughter to sleep half the time i drive them up the wall 🤣)
      Anyway, I'm getting distracted 🤪.
Also, when Kit is a goal to reach, when he puts his mind to it and reaches it, it's like he hyper focuses on it. His ADHD is his superpower.
Yes, I know Kit is a fictional character, but I related to him a lot.
Also, on the flip side, if Kit loves someone or cares for someone, he goes all in. And will do anything for anyone. He's a very loveable and caring character.
The author Lex Veia has written kits character really well along with the whole characters & and story, to be honest.
There was always something going on its really action-packed from beginning to the end, but along with that for a least a good part of the way through it is all getting to know Kit and his story and alot of world building, which I don't mind I actually like it, it gives me more time for it to sink in my brain so I know and understand  what's going on or what's leading up to going on. Being ADHD myself I tend to find concentrating difficult unless I'm fixated on something, but I loose concerntration very easily, when this happens I find some books are harder to get back into when this happens because I've forgotten what happened etc... especially if a book has way too many characters, then I easily get confused, but that is not this book. This book was easy to get back into.
Right, the review I think is getting too long now. I will try and hurry up with it. I don't want to bore anyone to sleep 😴 while reading this 😅
There's also another character I adored, and that was Ghost AKA Zach Riley. He's the lieutenant who's interesting he wears this mask and a hood to cover his face up, he doesn't want anyone seeing his face, he's very mysterious,  As you get further into the story the character development gets a lot stronger between the rest of the team, especially  Ghost and Kit with its ups and downs. Then there's the slow-burn romance.
There's some very descriptive intimate content and a lot of very strong swearing. There's also a lot of funny banter from Kit aswell, which made me laugh out loud literally. 😆
This book will always be on my Favourites list for 2024, and I will be adding the book to my faves shelf.
If you can handle a neurodivergent  MC,  who is a lot to handle, etc, you will love Kit and his journey as much as I did. Not forgetting the other characters to. I need book 2 😂 I need to know what's going to happen next 🤪🤣

This proceeded ALL of my expectations. 5 stars and maybe one of my favorite reads this year.

✦ There is SO SO much to say about this book. but let's start with the story, because the book was mainly focused on that. i am a romance reader through and through, i usually don't go for action-packed books with little romance. this was exactly that, A LOT of action and worldbuilding and story and not a lot of romance. but i LOVED it. this world is absolutely epic. witches, bloodhounds, witch-hunters. the combination of fantasy-elements with real modern life was excellent done and made this so much more enjoyable and easy to grasp. the world was incredibly easy to step into, in comparison to your average fantasy book which has you confused for the first 70% of the book. oh and i really REALLY loved how the final battle of the book was in the same location as the very first one, that one was absolutely genius.

✦ and even though there weren't a lot of romantic scenes, the romance WAS epic. kit and zach, the criminal and the witch-hunter, the shadow and the ghost. YES PLEASE? i LOVED watching their relationship unfold. it wasn't insta-love and it sure took them a while, but that just made it so much better. and this first installment of the series is very obviously only the beginning of this relationship and i CAN'T wait to see more.

✦ Even more than the romance, i just loved reading about kit and how he evolved throughout this book. from the criminal to the badass renegade. he really fought for what he wanted, even though he didn't really know what he wanted most of the time. and zach, the masked and feared witch-killer. oh i loved him. and he has a british accent too!!!!!!!! pretty sure he was created just for me. and a lot of the characters in this book were just very lovable. kit, zach, brody, murph, harper. i'm really loving the found family vibes here.

All in all an excellent debut novel and first installment of this series, it couldn't have been done better. and i actually need the second book right now!!!!!!

NICE

This was a great start to a new series. Mind your triggers with this one mental health and all. I do want to start with if being in the mind of a neurodivergent person, with lots of trauma, living in a world that is trying to take him out isn’t your thing, this isn’t for you.
With that being said omg Kit, I love you. He was such a fun firecracker. He was all over the place, messy, with big heart. He kept me on my toes the entire book. I don’t know how many times I cackled with things that came out of his mouth.

Don’t let his fun fool you though. Under it all is a person who is just trying to find his people. His place in the community, but is so afraid of feeling that he keeps people at a distance.

This world, what can I tell you. It’s a mix of different kinds of magic. Some good most bad. And all the ways people end up peopling when they have a power and magic. This is about where do you draw the line of morality when your life is endanger, when powerful people are causing harm to the world. Who can you trust who are your people.
Kit takes us on that journey as he finds his people. This is a very slow build. So keep that in minds. I wish this was dual POV. While I love Kit I really wanted to know what Ghost was thinking. While you get a sense of who he might be you don’t get the whole picture. The smexy for what it was (remember slow romance build) seems like it’s going to be fire. The two encounters we had were HAWT. The found family is slowly growing on me, but they have to prove themselves. Over all this was great read and I can’t wait for more adventures.

Any book that starts out with "the problem was a pair of fluffy pink handcuffs" has my attention. This book captured it immediately and proceeded to keep through the entire thing. It mercilessly dragged me into its world and I happily let it. Constant action, shocking twists, 450 pages of keeping you on your toes, I was riveted.

As for the MCs - Shadow and Ghost, Kit and Zach, are electric together. Two restless hurricanes finding the calm before the storm in each other's arms.  The dramatic tall dark and broody love interest is a trope that's a little overdone, but I honestly didn't even notice it here. Ghost just made sense. And Kit is difficult to dislike, a constant force that sweeps up everyone in his path. I was attached to them both.

It's a slow burn that's plot heavy and the plot definitely shines on its own. It's a wild ride from start to finish but so fun and exciting!

Shadow & Ghost is out Feb 29th!

*Thanks to GRR for an ARC! These are my honest opinions and I'm giving them voluntarily* ♥️

Really enjoyed the reading! The story is a slow burn, action driven romance in 1st person POV (no dual POV). I liked the pacing very much, the romantic parts of the storyline are specked throughout the book, not too much and not too less, for me it's totally perfect for the development of the relationship of Kit and Ghost. I really loved the mystic, cold and soldier-like Ghost and am desperate like hell to get to know him better - what drives his actions, what happened in his past? If there is a second part (the ending teases a continuation but the author set the story on hold) I hope for a Ghost POV and more angst and hurt/comfort. And Kit... what a cocky bastard. I enjoyed his banter very much! At some times the story and the resolving of Kit's feelings and thoughts felt a bit rushed. There is no cliffhanger at the end but the relationship remains open for more development and I can't wait to read more from Shadow and Ghost :)

Hm. I read the Kindle edition, but that seems to be unavailable on amazon right now or I'd leave a copy of this review where it counts for an author.

I got this book on sale, and did finish reading it although it took me way longer than a long novel usually does. It's a solid three-star read, particularly for the romance which really is a slow-burn, and for the monsters, which were really creepy. I enjoyed some aspects and didn't like others, such as the worldbuilding with all the current media references despite the demon invasion worldwide. It kept popping me out of the story. There are some editing or revision fails, but overall this was pretty well edited.

What this first in a series didn't do was entice me to pick up book 2, oh well.

Loved Shadow and Ghost!!

I’m not a huge PNR/ fantasy reader, but something about this book drew me to it, and I’m so happy that I listened.  I loved it. I loved the dynamic between Shadow and Ghost and felt that their energy was amazing. This is a very slow burn, but it's totally worth the wait. I just wanted more between them because they are hot! The story is emotional and will have you angry, sad, happy, and laughing out loud at times. It is fast-paced with a ton of action. I read this basically in 1 sitting because it was so good. There are some dark scenes, but overall, I found it to be a light read.

Oh my!

This was amazeballs. The world building, the character building, oof made me forget I am a huge non-fan of slow burn. This slow burn was done right!!! Shadow and his cheekiness and Ghost and his broodiness. So smolderingly smexy. Hats off to you. I need book 2 now, please.

Does anyone know what happened to this book or where to find it!? I got sucked into the blurb, and several Facebook groups recommended, but I can find it nowhere. Please help!!

So this is literally just published, unedited, Call of Duty fan fiction.

I’m honestly surprised about how long it took me to figure out considering how blatant the intellectual property theft is. I was about 40-50% through the book when I realised that the character Ghost is literally just Ghost from Call of Duty.

From the wiki page for CoD Ghost:

Lieutenant Simon "Ghost" Riley is a British special forces operator, and a prominent member of Task Force 141, known for his iconic skull-patterned balaclava, headset, and dark red sunglasses.

Sound familiar anyone? British, hides his face, same callsign, same rank, SAME LAST NAME? Like Veia wasn’t even subtle about it. I’m also pretty sure that the character of Mac is based off of Soap (John MacTavish) from CoD who is also Scottish.
