Part of a series of hilarious nonfiction books about disgusting creatures, this book examines head lice. It covers such topics as head lice habitats (human heads only, dogs are gross) anatomy (his body is slightly see through, so he can always see what he ate for lunch), and parenting practice (the female louse sticks eggs to human hair and uses the leftover glue for her model airplanes). Although silly and off-the-wall, Head Lice contains factual information that will both amuse and teach.

Just yesterday, a fellow teacher told me that she follows me on Goodreads and that she was impressed that I will read anything. But even I have to admit that I am a bit baffled to admit that I enjoyed a children's nonfiction about head lice. But I did and I recommend it? Trust me, you'll have a good little chuckle.

From the Disgusting Critters series. Slugs, you're up! A combination of informational and entertaining. But I think that just the mention of head lice makes most people itch. To read about them, ach, it's even worse, but on the whole this is a fun book in a fun series. I have decided that I like Elisa Gravel's sense of humor based on a couple of her books, so have a pile of her books here from the library. Part of it is about nudging young people's curiosity, the young scientist angle, which is cool. You know, there was also one or two kids that really got into dissecting the frog. . . not me, but I get the point that some people need to know these things!

cute louse

This is one book from a series called, "Disgusting Critters".

Disgusting Critters

My boys and I have read a few of these, and they always get a kick out of the content, illustrations, and humor. There is factual information about head lice in this book (dispels some myths), and it's also very silly to appeal to children.

The set would make a great gift.

I found one of Elise Gravel's Disgusting Creatures series at the library, Head Lice! While I've dealt with this tough critter in my classes (head itching always) in the past, there are things I didn't know, like they ONLY live on human blood, not any other living creature. She writes about dogs, "Let the fleas have 'em!" Now I need to discover and read more of these informative and lively books. The simplicity of the cartoon story is well done, offering lots of information easy to read for younger readers.

Well, I did learn something--not sure that I ever knew that lice eat/drink human blood. I thought they just ate, you know, hair protein or something. In hindsight that does seem a little silly, but so does the existence of a parasite that serves no purpose other than to colonize human hair and be annoying.

What a fun way to learn about a gross little insect. I am excited to read more in the series. Concise, educational and funny.

Head Lice by Elise Gravel is a humorous book all about head lice. I would use this book in my classroom to explain to my students that just because someone has lice, does not mean that they are not clean. I want to explain to my students that everyone can get head lice, and we should not judge those who get head lice. I also want to address the ways we can prevent the spread of head lice in our classroom as well.

There is nothing fun about getting head lice! But, this book might just help a child understand what is happening to him/her. In this colorful book, the louse helps to shed some light on the facts about this topic. A bit of humor is used to lighten the mood, but lots of great information is included. As an early childhood educator, I feel this would be a excellent reference for parents and a welcome addition to any classroom.

Gross, lice! As much as we try to avoid it, lice just happens in many school districts, having this book when it does happen can help your students quite a bit. It explains exactly what lice is without scaring the children of those with lice. I will definitely be looking to buy this book for my own classroom, just in case.

I know you've probably never thought, gee, I'd really like to read a picture book about head lice. But guess what? This one is totally great. Also, now I know lots of fun facts about lice that I can share at dinner parties.

This is such a fun book - both informative and humorous. The reader is introduced to the louse in a third person narrative. But, the louse itself also joins the conversation, which is where the humor comes in. A great perspective on head lice!

I've rated every other book in the series 4 stars. The fact that this one gets only 3 stars speaks nothing about the book or the author. Head lice creep me the heck out. This is on me.

That said, very informative. And (okay...okay) fun.

The Mushroom Club was such a hit we decided to get all the other books by this author that our library had and they are just as excellent. We learn interesting things, the humourous asides are fun and Kait loves the illustration style and wants to try to imitate it.

Pretty good combination of an entertaining book while also informing you about lice. Some of the information comes across as silly but helps inform the reader on what lice do and why they do it. It is a part of a disgusting critter series.
