Ellie's Journal: The Diary of a (not very) Submissive Wife: April and May

Rate this book
This is Ellie's account of some of the outstanding moments in the first year of marriage to her dominant husband Nicholas, or 'Sir' as he often prefers to be called!

In this extract from her diary Ellie describes events during April and May, including her visit to a BDSM club with Nick, and her subsequent realisation that he has kept his previous involvement in the lifestyle from her. Anxious about her own shortcomings as a submissive she attempts to be 'more' for Nick, with not altogether happy results.

Nick and Ellie's love story, their developing relationship, and Ellie's journey into submission, is described in the trilogy: 'Love by Design', with the three titles – 'Taken in Hand'; 'Taken Further', and 'Taken Completely', or in 'Love by Design – Taken Altogether', which is the revised and edited novel comprised from the original trilogy.
Although it is not necessary to have read all, or any, of these in order to follow the accounts in Ellie's Journal, the friends that Ellie refers to, and aspects of Nick and Ellie's lifestyle and character are more fully described in the above books.
Further months from Ellie's diary will follow in due course. As the events covered are episodic, each volume may be enjoyed separately – no cliffhangers!

J.R. James is a British author who writes modern romantic fiction with an erotic twist and contemporary themes, exploring the Dominant/submissive dynamic in male/female relationships with varying levels of involvement in a BDSM lifestyle.

Her writing career began in 2013 with the publication of her ‘Love by Design’ trilogy, inspired by the new and expanding genre of erotic fiction with romance firmly at its core, and the growing mainstream popularity of the type of love stories that she had long enjoyed.

Her fiction has been described as ‘character-led’, and she admits to falling in love with her heroes and heroines while they ‘live’ with her and she gets beneath their skin to examine their motivations, as they navigate the often difficult path of love in search of their ‘happy ever after’.

She currently has seventeen published titles with lots more ‘work in progress’ ideas stored up in her imagination (and on her computer), and a whole cast of characters vying for attention to be her next romantic leads.

When she is not writing about the hot alpha-males who make the women in her books go weak at the knees, she loves reading across a wide range of genres, though erotic romance is definitely her first choice, and she is never happier than when curled up with a good book, or at her keyboard creating one.

Very hot BDSM scenes, with fully formed characters and a sense of humour. Yay!

I was provided with this story in exchange for an honest review as part of the Goodreads BDSM group's Read to Review. I hadn't read the previous episodes in Ellie and Nick's story, so for the first page or two I was wondering if it would make sense as there were references to other characters. However I quickly realised I was in for a rare treat. Characters that I liked, delicious situations and plenty of twists and turns and sexual tension to keep me interested. There was plenty of variety in terms of setting and tone in the play scenes.

I felt like I got to know both Ellie and Nick over the course of the book, and they were both growing from their experiences together. Ellie was a bit more naive about D/s than I expected given that they are a married couple with an established dynamic, but she was learning fast with Nick's help. I especially liked Nick, or Dom Nicholas. He often explained his motivations to Ellie, so even though the journal was Ellie's, I felt both the dominant and submissive perspectives were covered well.

One of the benefits in Nick being a very successful businessman is that he clearly has an unlimited budget for expansive dungeons and all manner of kinky equipment, so there were some intriguing scenes involving toys I hadn't read about previously. Having enjoyed this episode, I'm definitely interested in reading the rest of the series.
