Among the Shrouded

This is an updated cover edition of B00GBPWIEO.

What if a group of psychic strangers came together to save the world?

Mia, Thomas, and Kate have paranormal abilities.
And a common destiny.

They just don’t know it yet.

Mia Rosetti is used to being different, especially since she can tell if people are good or evil just by looking at their auras.
But when a mysterious (and handsome) stranger walks into her life without one, she starts questioning her power and begins a search to find the true purpose of her gift.

What she doesn’t know is that aura-less Thomas harbors secrets of his own - an abusive past and the ability to avoid danger.

Halfway around the world, Kate uses a form of telepathy to provide for her sisters and is excited by the prospect of going to the United States to secure their financial independence.

None are aware of the ancient prophesy foretelling the birth of seven psychics destine to change the world. Among the Shrouded follows Mia, Thomas and Kate, three unsuspecting strangers whose lives intertwine to reveal the significance of their gifts and the greater purpose of their collective lives.

This was an interesting book which dabbled in several genres. The main story was crime with a fair bit of police procedure and a lot of information about human trafficking. This was all good. Then there was a hint of the paranormal and for me this was the weakness in the book which lost it one star. I was originally drawn in to reading Among the Shrouded by the blurb which suggested a much higher content of paranormal than I actually got. Three main characters certainly did have some psychic powers as I was told to expect but such wishy washy powers. I was a little disappointed. Mia's ability to see auras was moderately okay but the other two were hopeless. Nevertheless I enjoyed the book overall and will look out for the sequel.

Among The Shrouded by Amalie Jahn is a superior and masterful police thriller like no other. Amalie makes it easy to identify each character POV by titling the chapter with that person's name. The three POV characters are Mia, police detective with a paranormal ability to see people's auras white is good, black is bad. This comes in handy when catching the bad guys.
Thomas is a waiter and pianist who lives with his adopted mother. He meets Mia in a police line-up where he is paid as an extra. Mia is shocked to see he has no aura at all. Thomas has the ability to know when he is in danger and this has saved him many times. When on a bus Thomas knows another passenger is going to attack with a knife and leaves.
Kate is a Ukranian promised a life of luxury in America with the ability to manipulate others for the good of the unfortunate. She makes an icecream machine break down so poor kids can be fed for free.
All these characters are richly described and the reader immediately identifies with them. This incredible novel grabs the reader and drags them by the scruff of the neck from page 1 of a paranormal mystery into the murky depths of human trafficking with an expertise that should elevate this author to stardom.
When Kate arrives in America her dreams are shattered when she is herded into a basement to be sold into the sex slavery market.
The author creates a brilliant and intense scenario as these wonderful characters are intertwined in such a way as to leave the reader breathless for more. And there is so much more to this novel than a mere police thriller, paranormal romance or supernatural mystery.
I highly recommend this Paranormal thriller and FIVE STAR novel to all readers who simply love a great book. The must read of the century.

The touch of the supernatural is what drew me to this novel, but what kept me reading chapter after chapter is that I truly cared about each of the characters and their interwoven stories. The three are linked not only by the date of their birth and their unique abilities, but also by their dedication, love, and ability to persevere.

Not a light-hearted subject matter concerning human-trafficking, but one that's important and needs to be told. This fictional story is compelling enough to make you care about what happens not only to the characters, but to the millions of people who actually live it.

It's a fantastic novel that will hook you right from the first chapter! You'll root for them from beginning to end, and will not want to put this one down until it's done!

"Among the Shrouded" by Amalie Jahn is a powerful and remarkable book
about an unimaginable and dark crime that is still happening in significant numbers in our modern world: Human trafficking.

Told from the perspective of several characters in Baltimore it shows the tragic life of women coming to the US in naive hope for a better future, only to find themselves trapped. Written with amazing empathy and care the book focuses on one particular woman from the Ukraine.

The parallel storyline that starts the novel off and which eventually intertwines with the trafficking concerns a woman who can see auras and who becomes fascinated with a man whose aura she cannot see during a police lineup. The supernatural theme of seeing auras is kept at a low profile, yet it has signifance in the story, just as other seemingly unconnected elements of the story come together unexpectedly.

The cast of characters that make up the story is perfectly chosen to bring home more subtle messages than the tragedy that is human slavery. The story of 'the man without an aura' is just as touching and moving. Jahn knows how to pull heartstrings but does so in a really tasteful and artistic manner.

There is hope and inspiration in the book, not all is doom and gloom. This is the second book by the author that I have read and - like "The Clay Lion" - I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I started this book yesterday afternoon and have been gripped ever since. I have not read a book so quickly in ages, and even though I am now disappointed that I have finished it, I am thrilled to bits I found it in the first place.

I loved the main characters...

Mia, a strong, intelligent woman surprised to find love in the shape of an "aura-less" seemingly average man. With the power to "see" the good in people, she has to learn to use her instincts instead.

Thomas, a man forced to adapt to life in adoptive care and all the stronger for it. He has always "found" a way to stay out of trouble, but his free will is going to be put to the test.

Kate, a Ukrainian student wanting more out of life and willing to do what it took to secure the future of her sisters at any cost. Her positive outlook and ability to "enable" the right thing to happen lead to a tricky situation.

All three are inter-linked in a plot that is laced with intrigue, suspense, romance and a fast-paced thrilled.

Ticked all my boxes! Loved it...

And the best bit was, it had an important message in the end - you'll have to read it to find out more! Enjoy :)

Among the Shrouded follows the point-of-view of three characters who share the same birth date—Kate, a young Ukrainian girl who travels to the United States hoping to earn money to attend college; Thomas, a busboy with a musical gift; and Mia, a police officer. All three have “paranormal” gifts and eventually converge to fulfill their destinies.

This book was nearly impossible to put down because the character development was so outstanding; I became heavily invested in all three characters and “had to” know what would happen next. Just when you think the stakes can’t escalate to a higher level, they do. The building of tension and suspense was masterful. This is a paranormal story, romance, and suspense all wrapped into one unforgettable book I would highly recommend to anyone in search of a good read.

Among the Shrouded took me by surprise. The characters and the complexities of their intertwined relationships, all the while bringing to light the very disturbing story of human trafficking, makes for an extremely good book. It is well written, well developed and very deserving of five stars. Get this book when you have time to read undisturbed, because you will want to read all of it once you start.

This is one of those wonderful books that will keep you thinking long after you finish the final page. Among the Shrouded by Amalie Jahn is an ambitious work, in that the author chose to frame her story in the harsh subject of human trafficking and weave through paranormal elements. I have to say, she pulled it off and made it look easy. What we are left with is a gripping yet meaningful story that is beautifully told. Highly recommended – 5-stars.

I read this over one night. I knew it was going to be an interesting and original read from the very first chapter and I wasn't wrong. You'll find wonderful little finishing nails at the end of each chapter and great transitions between scenes. Ms. Jahn is a crafty plotter and has quite an approachable prose style.

Among the Shrouded by Amalie Jahn is one of the best books I have read in a while!
I read constantly and love many different genres but I had not come across a book like this before.
Interwoven with supernatural abilities, this story is about a difficult subject to approach, human trafficking.
Written so well, that I had trouble putting it down and when not reading 'Among The Shrouded' my mind often wandered back to the characters, which I felt very invested in.
This is a BRILLIANT READ and there are some interesting statistics at the end which are also alarming.
Thank you Amalie Jahn for this very creative work and I look forward to reading more of your books!

This was fantastic novel. The characters were interesting and I felt connected to them almost immediately. I could feel what they were feeling as if I were in the novel with them.

The story takes on the topic of human trafficking. It is serious issue in our society and needs more exposure. Though the story is fiction you are able to follow the characters and see how easy it is for women (and men) to fall in to the hands of those that only mean to do them harm. You can see the brutality of the lifestyle without the gratuitous details of the abuse.

I think I've never read a book quite like this before. Brilliant thriller with darkness in its best. Not a typical paranormal story, which in this case was a perfect thing. I kept waiting for that first vampire to show up until the very last page, but nope, no vampires but something way better and quite refreshing!

Another "hard to put down" book by Amalie Jahn. The characters are well developed and the plot keeps you reading to find out what happens next. I highly recommend this book.

Sorry not sorry.

I devoured this book. The three characters were well developed and their stories and backgrounds drew me deeper into the story with every chapter. as a writer and avid reader of paranormal books I was looking forward to reading this one because the story line was not the typical paranormal story... sorry no vampires, werewolves, or witches here. But that made the story intriguing. It was about three average human beings with a different unique gift put in terrifying situations and coming out as heroes.

All three, despite the odds stacked against them, became heroes. The two female characters were different but yet they were strong in their own rights. The male character was the weakest of the three in the beginning but I loved how love helped him become the biggest hero of all.

If you like stories that scream reality and include a little paranormal action as well you will enjoy this story. I highly recommend this book to the mature YA, NA, and Adult crowd.

Thank you for a wonderful story and I look forward to reading the next one.

Since I was already reading another book when this book arrived at my door, Among The Shrouded had to wait patiently on my bookshelf for its turn. That was until I got a call from my mom last week asking if I had read Among The Shrouded yet. She told me how good this book was and that she had finished it in just one day.

That is the day that the other book took over the spot on my bookshelf and I began to read the story of Mia, Thomas & Kate. From the very beginning, I found myself intrigued by the characters and anxious to find out what would happen next. I am normally not a person that sets aside a lot of time for reading but with this book, I found myself saying “I can fit in at least one more chapter before I have to do…”

I finished Among The Shrouded this afternoon and I highly recommend it. Read the 1st chapter. And then the 2nd. And then the rest! You won’t be disappointed.

Among The Shrouded, is Amalie Jahn's second novel. While very different from the first, this novel is an amazing work of fiction. Based on a topic that is tragic, Amalie weaves a story so tightly crafted that it is nearly impossible to set down once you begin reading. While a tragic subject matter, the strength and courage of the main characters become the crux of this story from it's beginning.

The main characters of Mia and Thomas, and eventually Kate, have such a clear voice that each character has you rooting for them and looking ahead to each chapter with anticipation of what will become of them. I felt an immediate connection to Mia, Thomas, and Kate, and the interweaving of their stories is expertly done. It is a page turner, and will not leave it's readers disappointed.

Now, I'm only hoping that she has a third novel in the works!

I honestly don't understand the 4-5 stars given for this book. It definitely has a descent plot but the writing is very elementary and does not have the texture I would expect that comes from well written prose. If it were not for the sexual content which is definitely not graphic or violent in any way I would say this book seems more of a YA novel than adult.

I would recommend this book but would caution the reader to expect a very elementary writing style integrated with a storyline that is interesting but lacking in the stylistic prowess of some of the great books in 2013-14. Definitely not a book more than 3 stars at most.

After reading the author's first book (The Clay Lion), I thought I knew what to expect from her second novel. How wrong I was! This book took a complex, dark topic....human trafficking....and brought the seriousness of the issue to the forefront. The characters are well-developed and the relationships between the three key characters is cleverly symbolized at the start of each chapter. I enjoyed this book even more than her first and can't wait to see what she has in store next for her readers!

I downloaded and started reading Among The Shrouded last night and could not put it down till my eyes hurt. Only at about 3:30 am when I realized I was partially drooling on my Kindle in a zombie like state did I put it down to get some shut eye with much protest from my brain wanting to delve into this remarkable story. Finally got a chance to read the rest and finish the book and all I have to say is AMAZING!!!! I won't spoil anything on this review, all I have to say is you won't regret reading it. Keep up the fantastic writing and I look forward to your next book.

Outstanding! Outstanding! Outstanding!

I loved this book. The subject matter is not the happiest, most cheerful topic, but the story is written in a way to open the eyes of readers to the tragedy of human trafficking.

I will definitely reading anything this author writes!

And I will strongly recommend this book to everyone I know.

What does it take to save the world? Doesn’t change begin with an individual? Three psychically gifted young people will be brought together by fate and true evil. Together they will become a triad of strength and determination that will save the lives of innocents being abused and expose evil for who and what it is.

Mia sees auras, as a police officer this comes in handy in determining guilt. Thomas, with his dark past has learned to avoid trouble completely. When Mia sees Thomas, he has no aura and this has never happened before, is this part of his becoming mentally invisible to others? Across the world, Kate dreams of a higher education and of helping people, but she became part of a brutal plot to force young girls into sexual slavery in the United States. She is relying on her mental telepathy to orchestrate an escape for those with her. Chance brings these three together and together they attempt to take on the big machines of crime and politics, while searching for Kate’s younger sisters who have also been kidnapped. Is their coming together part of a prophecy? Are there more like them? Will they live to save others in peril or will their bravery and sometimes rash moves backfire on those they wish to help?

Intrigue, mystery and a touch of romance drive this tale of an elite and unlikely team of gifted people who are determined to save those in need as their bond grows and their futures become filled with purpose.
Among the Shrouded by Amalie Jahn blends the paranormal with some of the most vile of crimes and black market cruelty, while adding just enough intrigue to move this tale along in a well-paced plot filled with human flaws and the fight of good against evil. Deceit and trickery, abuse and even love each take their moment in the spotlight as Ms. Jahn’s tale unfolds. She writes with a beautifully detailed style that creates an atmosphere of tension that fuels each page while bringing it to life as we attempt to guess the next act in a prophecy coming to fruition.

I was so impressed with Ms. Jahn’s style, which fits her tale to a tee. A hard to put down read, highly recommended!

Honestly, I was expecting more. I mean, look at all the five stars!! They're literally everywhere!! They talk about compelling characters, compelling plot, compelling writing, basically everything is compelling so you should be sucked right into the story and live the lives, fear the fears and joy the joys of the very-realistic men and women Amalie Jahn has portrayed.

I felt nothing.

Absolutely NOTHING!

You know where I decided to give my poor soul a break? At 40% of the book. FORTY FREAKING PERCENT! That is not even half of the book in case you don't want to do the math.

So, who was there?

Mia
She had a talent. She saw people's auras, which told her if that person was good or bad. Aside from that talent she had absolutely nothing else. No interest, no personality, almost no past (aside from a few word about how people didn't believe her when she was little). She met this guy at a line up at the police station whose aura she couldn't see and became obsessed with him.

Thomas
He was the no-aura guy. He had a very abusive past which in my opinion did nothing aside from proving that he had that freakingly convenient ability of being able to sense danger and music was a wonderful escape for abusive children (No irony intended. Music is a really good escape).

Kate
She was the one who lived in Ukraine with her poor family that doesn't even know how to take a chance when it come, had totally nothing to do with Mia and Thomas (at least until the point I stopped reading) and complained a lot. Like, A LOT!! All her chapters were filled with complaints and I admit I probably skimmed a few paragraphs.

What happened before the 40% checkpoint?
Nothing. Mia and Thomas met, and we had something that is obviously going to be a romance later. I mean, they met twice and decided to have lunch together and the next thing I know he was inviting her to a picnic and she was inviting him over to her house with a homecooked meal or something. Kate was in Ukraine, joining an obviously faux convention advertising American investors' interest in helping Ukraine students where some ominous guys whispered in her ears that she was gonna be chosen (she was wearing a very pretty dress and she took time to look very pretty) and then she was boarding a cargo plane to the U.S.

THAT WAS WHAT HAPPENED AT 40% OF THIS MOTHERFUCKING BOOK! I practically summarized it in 100 words whereas it usually takes me longer than this to rant about a book. How surprising.

Writing
I don't know. I was too busy skimming the pages waiting for something more interesting to read to actually pay attention to anything else.

In conclusion, I'm very tempted to write to great Father Time to demand my morning back.
