This was the perfect book to fill in a couple of hours while thinking about what I wanted to read next. This was an interesting quick read.

Mallory Myers is on the run. Recently she's been getting threatening text messages. And messages left on her car window. But it was the brutal murder of her best friend who was killed in Mallory's apartment that was the final straw.

She thinks the person responsible is her ex-boyfriend, a very prominent news anchor. The problem is that no one believes her and the local law enforcement consider her a 'person of interest'.

She leaves town in a hurry, returning to her small home town, only to find her mother and law enforcement father away on vacation. Within hours, someone starts a fire in the woods behind her family home.

Fire Chief Logan McDaniel investigates and determines that the fire was started on purpose. And the threatening texts continue. Mallory knows she has to trust some one ... and Logan is more than ready to hear her story.

But is she telling the whole truth? Since the ex-boyfriend is working at the news studio which is being broadcast ... he has the perfect alibi. Or does he?

Delightful little romantic suspense. Very light-weight. No graphic intimate moments. Some violence, again not graphic.

I would recommend this for anyone who enjoys romantic suspense.

I was very interested when I first heard that Melody Carlson was writing a Love Inspired Suspense, since as I've read many of her books, I hadn't seen a suspense-ish book by her.
Unfortunately, I read to page 60 and couldn't continue.
Between the murder details that seemed over-the-top (and frankly, felt like it was trying to hard) and Mallory's personality (which why was somewhat understandable with everything she's been through, she just seemed, well, fake and slightly annoying to me), I wasn't enjoying it at all.
According to other reviews who finished this book, the killer is who it's said/hinted to be, so there's no suspense in that regard.
I probably will try Melody Carlson's other LIS, but after this one, my hopes aren't high.

Mallory Myers makes a big mistake when she agrees to go out with the news anchor at her local TV station. After realizing that mistake, she breaks things off with him, but he doesn't take kindly to her snubs, especially after she dares to present a piece on abuse of women after she suspects him of similar behavior. When she comes home to find her best friend and the man's latest girlfriend killed in Mallory's home, she goes home to spend time with her parents and to think about what to do next, particularly when it appears that no one believes she wasn't the person who killed her friend.

But trouble follows her in the form of an attempted arson of her parents' home, and other attempts to scare her away. Who is sending her those threatening text messages? Who is trying to kill her and why?

In the midst of his investigation of the fire at her parents' house, Mallory meets Logan McDaniel, the fire chief of tiny Clover, OR. He believes her and vows to keep her safe as his investigation pulls him closer. Soon, it becomes clear that the police aren't paying enough attention to the clues Mallory begins to uncover, along with the evidence that she didn't set her parents' home on fire, that it was, indeed, arson.

How things proceed from there make for a riveting suspenseful end with a romantic ribbon tying it all together.

This book is an easy quick read. I liked the suspense but then again I've never read this type of book before, I was not expecting it to be so sappy. The "romance" is boring and the ending makes no sense. Also, the characters are constantly giving the same bits of information over and over again, and there is no mystery about who's the killer.

This book was a complete struggle for me. The only things I liked were that the baddie had a perfect alibi and that there was much more depth to his story than first met the eye. Everything else felt contrived, bullyish, over-the-top, and too easily solved.

There was at least one factual error. This book stated that “most forest fires were the result of lightning strikes.” However, the “Wildfire Causes and Evaluation” page of the United States’ National Park Service website clearly states, “Nearly 85 percent of wildland fires are caused by humans.”

There were inconsistencies and inaccuracies throughout, including calling a sundress “formal.”

It was disappointing to see how prejudiced and jump-to-conclusions the authority figures were in this book. I certainly wouldn’t want to visit this fictional town even if I could, because the authority figures were so prejudiced against the leading lady that they failed to properly conduct their investigations, which forced her to solve her case herself.

The story was circuitous and repetitive.

Most new facts were revealed via dialogue rather than seeing the things take place. This was exhausting and probably explains why it took me half a month to read this short novel.

“Well, maybe I can just believe it for you.” Yeah… that’s not at all how faith works. Faith must be personal, according to the Holy Bible, instead of by proxy.

There were some outlandish and illogical plot twists and decisions made by the characters. One such choice was leaving a crawling-with-cops safe location. No small-town killer would attack in those circumstances, so the smartest thing, the most logical thing, would be to stay put. Yet they left.

The faith thread was nearly non-existent. Other than the abovementioned line, which wasn’t accurate to Bible-taught faith, there was a last-second plea but nothing substantial. This was also disappointing, as I like a solid faith thread in Love Inspired suspense books.

On a positive note, there weren’t any content issues that I noticed.

Skimmed through most of it.

I am sorry to say this is the first Melody Carlson book I have read. It is not a very well written suspense/mystery. The dialog is poor and most of the story is unrealistic. After chapter 3 I started skipping.

By chapter 3, Mallory's best friend had been found murdered in her apartment. She's convinced her ex-boyfriend Brock did it. The reader is never given an actual reason why she believes this; we are only told that no one believes her and that she's a suspect. There doesn't seem to be much of a murder investigation.

Logan does not appear as a realistic fire chief; his dialog is very unrealistic, especially for a fire scene.

There's a lot of inconsistencies and oddities that take away from the suspense. For example, after the run in with Logan she goes back in the house, is unable to sleep, showers, puts on yesterday's wrinkled clothes, gives some sort of reflection about clothing, and then when Logan visits her we find out they are still fighting the fire. It's just odd. No mention of the ongoing fire fighting until then. It doesn't make sense wondering about not being able to sleep when a fire is being fought in the woods directly behind the house.

In my skimming, the story didn't seem to improve. It's difficult to get interested in a suspense story that doesn't flow well.

I didn't realize the book was this old. Being an audiobook fan, this version just came out.

The story was ok, a little unbelievable or repetitive at times, but I love Melody Carlson's stories. The reason for this lower rating is because of the audiobook quality. "This is an Apple Books audiobook narrated by a digital voice based on a human narrator." It was ok, but painful at times when the wrong gender was used for a character and left you wondering who was speaking. Inflections and pronunciations weren't always correct either. This is my first and last AI narration. Give me real people, please.

Apropos of nothing, a few chapters in, the male romantic lead breaks into a long-winded Christian prayer. None of the props or setting are given much thought except for the firearms, which are all named (and apparently chosen based on popularity as opposed to whether they would realistically be used for home defense). Formulaic, but I suppose that it how you publish over 200 books.

I usually love Melody Carlson's stories but I could not get in to this story. It was too predictable. Mallory believes her ex-boyfriend is out to kill her. The fire chief is the only one who believes her. He vows to protect her, they fall in love, they almost die but are saved, the bad guy goes to jail, and they decide to get married.

4.5! I have loved all of Melody Carlson's books. This is the 1st suspense book I have read and it did not disappoint! My ONLY complaint was that Logan's interrogation of Mallory at the very beginning was super repetitive and kinda annoying lol. I was ready to start skimming. Once I got past that I just had to know what was going to happen next!

Clean read, good storyline, and likeable characters, but disappointed that for a inspirational book, it didn't have much proof that anyone relied on God to see them through their troubles.

In Perfect Alibi, Mallory Myers, a young Portland journalist, flees to her hometown of Clover. She is trying to escape the nightmarish discovery in her apartment where she found the body of her best friend, Kestra. Kestra had been murdered there and Mallory fears that she is next. Mallory is certain that she knows who the murderer is: her ex-boyfriend, Brock Dennison, a popular news-anchor of a Portland television station. When she voices her suspicions to the police, she faces disbelief and skepticism. Instead, she comes to realize that she is considered to be the primary suspect for Kestra's murder.

On top of that, Mallory is still receiving death threats, which started when she first broke up with Brock. The threats follow her to Clover. No one believes in Mallory's innocence because everyone thinks that she is making up the threats in order to throw off suspicions from herself.

The exception is Fire Chief Logan McDaniel, one of Mallory's former high school classmates. He had been interested in her romantically in the past, but hadn't acted on his attraction then. His protective instincts are roused when he sees the threats made against Mallory. The threatening texts indicate that her harasser is physically nearby and is able to find Mallory even when she is supposedly in seclusion.

Brock Dennison has the perfect alibi. How could he have murdered Kestra when he was on the air, delivering that evening's newscast? It also doesn't make sense that Brock could be the author of the threatening texts when he is Portland, which is located three hours away from Clover.

Will Mallory and Logan be able to expose Kendra's real murderer and prove Mallory's innocence? Will Logan be able to protect Mallory from being killed next? Is Mallory trying to deceive everyone so that she can get away with murder?

I thought that the novel was okay. The female and male protagonists were both believers, and they didn't seem to be suffering crises of faith. The conflict seemed to be more about whether Mallory could prove her innocence to the the rest of the world, including to Logan, who found himself doubting her every once in a while. Perfect Alibi is a basic inspirational, romantic suspense novel with believing protagonists, and I didn't think that either of the central characters experienced huge development or growth in their faith after their adventures concluded.

As with Love Inspired's practice, the Bible verse inscribed on one of the first few pages of this novel reads, "Be gracious to me, O God...for my soul takes refuge in You; and in the shadow of Your wings I will take refuge until destruction passes by." (Psalm 57:1 NASB) The verse describes what Mallory must do in order to get through the circumstances that she finds herself in.

I found the book to be entertaining, and enjoyed the ride that I had with Mallory and Logan in Perfect Alibi. I would probably read more of Ms. Carlson's romantic suspense novels in the future.

Perfect Alibi is by Melody Carlson. It is a Love Inspired Suspense.
Mallory Myers has come home to her parents’ home two hours from Portland and on the edge of the National Forest. Unfortunately, her parents are on a trip to visit her father’s siblings and are currently out of cell phone range. There is no one she can call. Her best friend, Kestra, had been murdered in Mallory’s apartment. Although there is no proof which the police can verify, Mallory is convinced her ex-boyfriend Brock Dennison is behind her murder. Mallory is also convinced that it was a mistake; Kestra was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. It was Mallory who was to have been murdered. No one in Portland believes her and they even suspect Mallory was the murderer. Her father would have believed her; but who else will?
Fire chief Logan McDaniel is called to a fire near the National Forest. He sees someone in a ball jacket and cap running away from the house. He tackles the person only to find it is Mallory who was fighting the fire with a garden hose. As he begins investigating the fire, he begins to learn Mallory’s story and he believes her. He stays with Mallory to protect her and to help figure out what is going on.
Everyone else believes the news and believes Mallory is guilty. Her ex-boyfriend and Kestra’s current boyfriend are the same man- Brock Dennison. He is the most watched newscaster in the area. His personality wins over all the women who watch him. The men are brought into his fan club by his honesty and earnestness. Will Mallory ever get anyone to listen to her? How can it be Brock when he is on live television at the time everything happens? Millions provide him with the “perfect alibi”.

The book is good but you know who is trying to kill her all along. You just don't know why. Nothing puts it over the top.

I've read Melody Carlson before and liked her writing, so I was curious to try her first foray into romantic suspense. Unfortunately, this one just didn't work for me. In terms of mechanics, it's obvious that we're not dealing with a novice writer. However, the suspense plotting in this book just felt off.

In Perfect Alibi, we pretty much know from the beginning who the villain is. And that's a plot choice that can work, if the characters are strong enough to pull it off. However, in this case, they just weren't. We have journalist Mallory fleeing to her parents' home after the murder of a close friend. She's positive her eeevil ex-boyfriend is behind the crime, but pretty much everyone suspects her. The fact that the crime occurred in Mallory's home doesn't help.

I found it hard to believe that the police, who suspect Mallory, would let her go jetting off to her hometown, but there you go. And of course, the local fire chief, Logan McDaniel, believes Mallory and tries to help her. The characters felt a bit bland, and the setup just kept seeming more and more unbelievable. I started off thinking I could possibly like this book, but it faded into frustrated boredom as I went along. Not a bad book, but not great rom susp either.

After writing over 200 novels Melody Carlson has turned her impressive talent to penning her first romantic suspense. She drops her readers right into the middle of a gnarly mess that includes a murder and our heroine fleeing for her life. Her fear is palpable. Tension wrapped my stomach in knots as I accompanied Mallory on her desperate flight. Phew! And there's nothing like a fire fighter hero ready to leap to our heroine's defence even when evidence seems to be stacked against her. A convoluted path of angst and destruction thrusts these two together igniting a sweet romance. A thrill of a read from beginning to end.

To start with, I don't like romance stories. My friend handed me this book and said that I would like it. So on that dare I began one of the fastest moving who dun its I have read in a while. This woman is accused of killing her best friend in her own apartment. She decides to go go home to her parents farm to work things out over the weekend. First there is a fire threatening the place. The fire chief remembers her from high school and she teams up with him to try to solve her troubles. There are many attempts on her life and things move from one bad situation to another and no one but the chief believes her. You won't believe how this ends.

Actually, about 3 1/2. Better than average. I would normally rate it a solid 4, especially given the strength of the female protagonist, but I found it frustrating that the "bad guy" was known from the start, and the base of the book is the female protagonist's desperate need to be able to prove it.

Pretty good. The writing is smooth and easy. The suspense wasn't all there as we knew who the bad guy was. So that fell flat. The romance was so sudden, rushed and unrealistic even for a series book. Overall, a decent first try at romantic suspense for this author .
