Shadows on the Grave #1-8

Shadows on the Grave

Rate this book
Richard Corben follows up 2014's Spirits of the Dead with a new collection of original short stories, ranging from gothic tales worthy of Poe, to Twilight Zone-style encounters with the weird, to a full-length fantasy epic featuring a barbarian reminiscent of Corben's most notorious creation, Den, immortalized in the 1981 animated film Heavy Metal.

Corben rose to prominence with short horror and science fiction stories in the early 1970s in Creepy and Eerie, which were later collected in Creepy Presents Richard Corben. He remains one of the most important voices in horror comics. In 2009 he won the Eisner for Best Miniseries as well as being named Spectrum's Grand Master, one of illustration's most prominent awards. In 2011 he won the Eisner for Best Oneshot, and the following year he was inducted in the Will Eisner Hall of Fame.

I’m no stranger to horror - I’ve sat and listened to my elderly parents complain at length about how nothing about them works anymore, and, of an evening, I’ve stumbled into some takeaway after many drinks and sampled their rotating, sweaty mystery meat kebabs (with a hefty side order of regret for later) - so I know the truly terrifying from the truly terrible, and Richard Corben’s Shadows on the Grave? This is horror for the profoundly retarded - and I mean barely-able-to-dress-themselves-without-shitting-they-britches retarded!

Here’s an idea of the stories contained within: some guy steals from the dead and the corpse rises from their grave and kills him; it’s called “Don’t Steal From the Dead”. In “The Grave Flies”, some grave robbers steal some Egyptian trinket and get eaten by flies - that’s IT! In “The Clown”, a robber dressed as a clown steals from a circus and gets killed by a puppet. Some dude takes magic ‘roids in “Flex” and pops after his muscles swell to bursting.

I’m gobsmacked this kind of crap got published. It must purely be because Richard Corben’s a name in comics after the many decades he’s worked in the industry because, if some nobody came up with this, no way in hell it’d ever see the light of day.

This volume goes on for nearly 300 interminable pages of excruciatingly unimaginative, predictable and shockingly flat stories, closing on an extra-long, extra-brainless Conan the Barbarian-type story where idiots kill each other for idiotic reasons.

Corben’s not an amazing writer but he usually produces some half-decent horror comics (Rat God and his Edgar Allan Poe adaptations, Spirits of the Dead, are ok) so I don’t know what happened with Shadows on the Grave but, honestly, save yourself the time/effort/braincells/anything and stay well away from this drek!

A bunch of short stories mainly with the bad guy getting what they deserved. It would definitely be at home with the old EC or Creepy comics. The stories get a little one note as they all have the same theme, usually stealing from dead or dying relatives. The last 100 pages or so is a Greek tragedy. It's honestly not very good.

I received a free copy of this book from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review

This wasn't necessarily bad I guess, it just definitely wasn't for me. The first 200 or so pages consist of about a million REALLY short horror stories that are all I guess a little more ...'classic' than I would like them to be. And by that I mean they all have a really obvious and 'ironic' twist at the end and despite the often gory subject matter seem more suited for a child's attention span and depth of understanding than an adult's. Honestly what it reminds me of most is that Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark book from when I was a kid, but unfortunately this doesn't have the same nostalgia value to it for me personally. Also I just really hated the art style so it was incredibly hard to get into it because of that too.

Around page 200 it abruptly shifts gears to a 70-page story about a guy and a girl in I guess ancient Rome? I'll admit I skimmed that part heavily. It was just so out of place with the rest of the content that I'm not sure why it was included here at all and would probably have been better off collected in a volume by itself. After that's there's maybe 20 or so single page horror comics which again was incredibly jarring after reading the ancient Roman thing for so long. Honestly without that weird interlude I probably would have gave this a grudging 3/5 stars but I was just so confused I decided to round down instead of up.

Stories are reminiscent of Twilight Zone. But the art? The art was mesmerising.

Lo de menos, los guiones..., pero esos planos, esas luces y sombras, esas secuencias, esos enfoques... Corben es la leche, un verdadero maestro del comic, y es en la temática de terror donde, desde mi punto de vista, da lo mejor de sí mismo.

Richard Corben, master of the old thrills and chills. I eventually found joy in his art (even if his drawing of people faces still makes me laugh), he is excellent in creating spooky old houses, creepy graveyards and dar and terrifying moors and swamps. Skeleton, corpses, monsters - you name it, he's got it. And it works for me even in B&W. Shadows on the Grave is a great collection of short horror stories of a specific type, usually a few pages long with gloom ending. Some of them are great, but it gets a bit repetitive over time. This was my short travel reading, so the pauses helped, but reading this on "one go" could accentuate the fact that the stories are on a similar principle. But luckily, there is a change in the wind. After this line of short horror stories came the story of Denaeus, Conan-ish antic story, which is quite long. It's not horror-ish, but it is brutal and without compassion. And it is fun. And this was last interesting stuff for me here. After this epic story, there are several short, one-paged stories, many of them are more illustrated story than comics, then some one-paged coloured comics, still far from interesting. I eventually found myself just strolling trough them.
So I decided to forget everything after Denaeus story (except for the cover gallery, which is nice) for the final rating. And I enjoyed that, as light travel reading, it was almost perfect.

Even if Richard Corben wasn't already a legend--and for good reason--you would have to hand it to someone who could do just about any project they wanted, and opted to use that opportunity to make what was essentially a collection of short, sharp tales that would have felt right at home in an old EC horror comic. While the format may preclude these stories from ever quite reaching the heights that Corben has ascended in some of his other recent works (notably Spirits of the Dead), these are great, old-timey reads that are also inescapably stories as only Richard Corben could tell.

This is in the style of old horror comic anthologies, and it's overwhelmed with cliches, but most of the stories are so brief that it's hard to be too disappointed by the endings, they barely have a middle section.
A quarter of the book is a Greco-Roman sword and sorcery story called Denaeus, it's supposed to be related to Den but I can't find much similarity or connection beyond basic genre elements and the main characters losing their hair. It also needed a bit more originality and the dialogue doesn't really try to stay in the period at all. The panels seem crammed at times and the storytelling is occasionally unclear, which is unusual for Corben.

Corben written most of this himself with a few guest authors. It's in black and white except the colour bonus pages at the end. It looks mostly great and has greytone rendering as nice as any comics I've seen. I particularly liked the rainy forest island setting and the look of the carnival dancer. The covers look surprisingly rushed by comparison.

Annoyingly there's one good drawing of Mag The Hag and Gurgy Tate from the first issue that wasn't collected in this book but the paper upgrade is a significant improvement for the art reproduction over the cheaper looking serialization. This isn't the first time Dark Horse left out non-story pages from a Corben collection.

Despite all the shortcomings I still like it a lot, but this is a tough form and even the best writers are likely to let you down on this subgenre. Doing this style of horror comic could seem like playing it safe but it's actually too ambitious in the time frame it was written in.

Richard Corben has always been a consistent artist, even if his writing isn't quite as consistent. This series is something right out of Creepy or Eerie magazine, with many different one shot tales as well as one longer serial, Denaeus, that was basically a continuation of his Den series.

Some of the stories were really good while others weren't. I sometimes think he's going for humor and it doesn't translate and just comes across as strange or confusing. Still a good horror read for fans of Creepy or Eerie, as this is definitely in that vein.

The artwork is great, 99% black and white, I would have liked some more colour stories. The writing is hit or miss, I appreciate that Corben is paying homage to the beloved old EC Comics (40’s, 50’s), short stories with a dark twist, it feels too repetitive and outdated today.

Richard Corben has been around forever, he must be immortal or something. And his art has always been jaw-dropping. His art is grotesquely caricatural and yet hyperrealistic at the same time. It’s almost threedimensional. Everything looks like you could pick it from te page and put on your table or desk. And he is as good with colour as with black and white and grey shades. I always stare at it in amazement.

The horror stories in this collections fit in the tradition of those old horror comics from the fifties, sixties and seventies. Creepy and Tales from the Crypt and such. There’s always a ghoul or witch or living corpse introducing the readers to the situation and the characters and warning them to stop reading if they know what’s good for them. On the following pages we see some assholes meeting their ghastly ends after having tempted fate in one way or another.

Corbens stories mostly take place in some American landscape we recognise from old movies. He firmly integrates Americana and American folklore with stories and myths from European, African and Carribean origin. The atmosphere is sultry, the tone always tongue in cheek and I don’t know if this is really scary or creepy, I feel rather safe reading Corben’s stories. I have known these monsters for such a long time they’ve sort of become imaginary friends.

This was really disappointing. I bought this sight unseen, not knowing a lot about it. I've never been the biggest fan of these short form, horror tales. Despite its cheap price, it was a bit of a gamble. Aa gamble that hasn't really paid off. Whilst the strange and unique art style can be both interesting and unappealing within a few pages of each ( I've never seen such unappealingly drawn women outside of a modern, progressive comic. Yet it is the writing that truly falls flat here. Stories abruptly end just when I was getting modestly invested. Dialogue is inane and unrealistic. I get they are going for a far more antiquated setting and style, although it doesn't work, regardless of the authors intent. There are a few good ideas here. Stories that would have been really good had they been more competently executed, although such misuse of its good ideas comes across as annoying and wasteful, rather than a minor saving grace. I'm sure the gushing praise splashed across this book was one of the reason's I gave it a chance, although I am mystified how anyone, even an out and out fan of this genre and style, could find this anything more than half assed and tedious. There are far better examples of this work out there. Best to look into those instead. 2/5

Shadows of the Grave has a little something for everyone interested in the horror genre and some fantastic artwork to boot. A new collection of 24 original stories from Richard Corben, who is somewhat of an icon in the horror comics world. Most of the stories are quite short, with some only a few pages long, which might leave some readers a bit unfulfilled. Each of the shorter stories are more of a amuse-bouche, designed more to show off a horrific plot turn and creepy artwork than to showcase character development. Some of the longer shorts have characters that are a bit more meaty, but still these characters are more a kin to those that you would meet in an episode of The Twilight Zone or Tales From the Crypt; while interesting you aren't going to remember their first names. What you will remember is the shocking turns and grotesque artwork! Read the full review at SignalHorizon.com

Welcome to the rotted faced, saggy titted, dripping, gape mouthed, bite-sized world of Richard Corben's short Illustrated horror. This is exactly what I was expecting from an EC style collection. The stories were definitely nothing new or surprising but still pulpishly entertaining. For the most part the art takes center stage here which is fine because Corben's style was enough to keep me turning the pages to see what nastiness was waiting on the next. I actually enjoyed the last story, Denaeus, the most. If a less skilled hand had filled these panels I don't know if I would have gotten through to that last most satisfying tale but Corben succeeded in that. If it were possible I'd give 2 stars for the stories, 5 for the art. If you're looking for a quick distraction of the classically morbid variety you won't be disappointed here.

How do you review nearly perfect horror? You give it 4 freaking stars.

To us snooty Europeans it comes to no surprise that Corben churns out almost perfect classic horror, with winning the grand prize at Anglouême this year and all.

Sometimes the drawings and anatomy don't make all too much sense. But whereas the stories ooze dread, the drawings exude a sheer joy in crafting comics and suddenly I don't care at all.
This might seem a bit derisive but it is in fact the highest praise I can give. Yes my rational side picked up these 'deficiencies' but the raw joy in readings these stories makes me forget these small petty peeves.

Read in single issues. These stories are fun for the most part and while some fall short of satisfying, Corben's creepy-as-hell art is more than enough to carry the load through the weak spots. I didn't much care for the multi-part Denaeus that was serialised at the end of each issue, mostly because I found it hard to follow and it seemed to jump around between too many characters. Perhaps this longer tale will read better in the trade.

Good to very good to great short horror stories in the vein of EC comics or Warren Magazines. Corben's unique style and masterful storytelling ensures all of the stories maintain a consistent quality of presentation. That said, some of the stories are weak. Even shallow. IMHO this volume isn't nearly as wonderful as Corben's Spirits Of the Dead.

this book confirmed corben as one of my favourite comic book artists, the lad is 80 and is still pumping out such good stuff
only downside is a lack in richards famous milk pitchers
mirror image, a hill of husbands and the denaeus story were particular favourites, in no particular order

A Twilight Zone vibe with Tales from the Crypt Keeper aesthetics and an animation style insanely reminiscent of Wallace and Grommit. I enjoyed it but it felt like Stephen King went on a bender and binge wrote cheap horror shorts. Nothing wrong with those either. I mean, I just referenced 3 separate successful media enterprises here, so not exactly critique. Just some of the stories were a bite trite. Also, what's up with that greek story in like 10 parts?

Anyway, enjoyable for a single sit down. Don't think I would have picked it back up if I had put it down unfinished though.

M'agrada molt Corben. Molt.
