4 favorable stars🌟🌟🌟🌟

This was a police procedural, and admittedly this is not my favorite type of mystery/thriller.... however, I did find this book interesting and the characters quite engaging....

Jake and his partner Louie’s relationship and banter was really the best part of this book for me.... I thought these men both as partners at work and as characters in this book balanced each other out really well.... and bonus they were both very manly without being complete jerks.....

In the first half of this book there was a lot going on, really a little too much.... the second half of the book really focused on the two main cases in this book, and I found that part of the book very well done.... I was solving the crime right along with Jake and Louie....

There is some romance in this book between Jake and Mia... really liked her character, and I think she struggled with something a lot of Women do, including myself.... wanting to be that strong independent woman, and yet wanting someone to be there for you when you want them to be..... of course this confuses Jake, because really it is quite confusing.... warning to my Friends with an aversion to romance your eyes will be rolling....
Steam rating from 1-10 is a 4🔥🔥🔥🔥
Movie rating if this were a movie for sex, violence, and language probably R

Absolutely recommend this book to fans of police procedurals with a pretty fabulous partnership.... you could always skim the romance if that’s not your thing😉

*** thank you too Net Galley and the publisher for a copy of this book, the opinions above of the book are honest and my own ***

Homicide Detective Jake Carrington certainly has his hands full. Newly appointed to the title of Lieutenant with all the responsibility that entails, he's still working cases.

He has a stalker ... the sister of a woman who was murdered. He is still working the case, but he made the mistake of dating the sister a time or two. Sister is not pleased at all. And since Jake has since started dated another woman, the new lady friend is also being stalked ... but is it the same woman, or is there something else going on?

The woman found dead is a not so subtle reminder of Jake's own sister who was brutally murdered some years ago. The man responsible was caught and is now in prison. However, because of DNA testing, he is requesting to be tested and filing for a new trial. The thought that this man might walk the streets again make Jake literally sick with anger.

Another woman is found murdered and according to her children and friends, she had no enemies. Unless you count her ex-husband and his new wife. They don't gain anything by her death, so who else would want the lady dead?

ALL THE DEADLY LIES is well-written with characters that are stand out. Jake and his partner, Sgt Louie Romanelli ... one Irish, one Italian... are closer than most brothers. I love how they interact with each other and with Louie's wife and kids. They are both focused on their careers and finding justice for the victims and their families.

The story premise is a good one ... easy to read, easy to follow. There's a lot of door-knocking and interviewing possible suspects, most times more than once. This is not a CSI look-alike, there's a lot of credibility in this author's storytelling.

Not all Jake's cases get solved in this go-around. A small cliff-hanger is involved. I'm really looking forward to see Jake and Louie in their next adventure.

Many thanks to the author / Kensington Books - Lyrical / Netgalley for the advanced digital copy of this crime thriller. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Thank you to Kensington Publishing Corporation and Net Galley for a free copy of this book in trade for an honest review

It’s a book that you could read during your holiday while lounging at the pool and don’t want to think too much. It’s got plenty of drama and romance with a background story of crime and mystery. More like a diary of everyday police’s life with behind the scene of after office hours. A quick read with something to expect on each turn of the page.

The story started with Jake Carrington got summoned to his Captain’s office about his sister’s killer and his promotion as Lieutenant. At first glance I thought the story will be focused on Jake sister’s killer. Well, apparently it’s not the case. Along the way, the story develops into a more complex and unfocused direction. With a bunch of cases thrown around the book, sometimes I lost direction on the cases and who’s who. It’s like: who’s that again? From which case is that person? After a while….oh, that’s the one from that case. It’s kind of tiring. The red line that connected the whole story is Jake’s love life and his friendship with his partner Louie.

The characters are not weepy but stressed more on the romance and dramatic side. Jake is described as the most eligible banchelor who has the worst luck with women. He dated occasionally, even dated a witness and pays a steep price for it. Louie as his partner and friend is pictured as a family man, someone who is nice and friendly with lots of humor.

The end is well what should I say, a bit unpredictable. The cases got closure, with crime of passion is behind the reason for each case. But Jake’s life is getting a different turn by the end. By the end of the story, I’m still find this book engaging, although still a bit too much drama for me.

Recommend for those who love a thriller with not too much stress on the crime aspect, a bit of drama and humor.

If I Fail did not fail to deliver. Ms. Lanouette takes us into the relationship between homoside detective, Jake Carrington and his partner, and explores the tragic losses in Carrington's past. The story revolves around the investigation of three murder cases which keeps the reader rivited. One of the elements of her book which I really enjoyed was that of her fictious town, which really hit close to home. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. I can't wait for the sequel.

Newly promoted homicide detective, Lieutenant Jake Carrington of the Wilkesbury, CT Police Department, and his partner Louie Romanelli have several complicated cases on their hands. Jake is also dealing with a personal issue -- the man who was convicted of Jake's sister's murder is wanting a new trial and has asked for his DNA to be retested. Carrington and Romanelli are very busy interviewing suspects, chasing down leads, and reviewing case files. The homicides they are investigating include the bludgeoning murder of a young collect student, another involved a shot to the head of a divorced woman, and the rest of the squad is managing a hit-and-run death as well as a school shooting. They are working it with all the usual police procedural details.

I enjoyed this first in series to an extent but was totally irritated by the mad passionate love affair that Jake becomes involved in. I'm not a romance fan and I hate when it takes up so many pages in a book. I wish he would have just kept his mind on the cases. So this is not any sort of hard boiled detective novel, there wasn't much suspense typical of a crime thriller, so it was more a mystery with few surprises. I have the third in the series to read for review and will be skipping the second.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing Corp. for the e-book ARC to read and review.

I enjoyed most of "All the Deadly Lies" a new crime thriller series featuring newly minted Lieutenant Jake Carrington. I liked that the novel follows him and his best friend/partner's day to day activities working in the homicide department trying to close multiple cases instead of just focusing on one as most thrillers do. They specifically focus on two murders and are following the various leads. Jake is a well developed character with a tortured past. The relationship between Jake and Louie (and Louie's family) is fun and feels very real. Where I began having trouble with the story was about a quarter of the way through there is a love interest introduced for Jake, up until this point the novel was told from his perspective then it flips to her point of view. It was a bit jarring and I did not understand the reasoning. The remainder of the book delves a lot into her feelings and story even though it has nothing to do with the cases. I actually found myself rooting against her. I would like to continue the series if it stays focused on Jake and his career.

An authentically crafted detective story
In this page-turning, crime-driven novel, Marion Lanouette sets the tone for her detective series with complex characters that pull at your heart strings. As a detective, Jake Carrington is noble, dedicated, and caring. He relives the death of his sister, which led to the deterioration of his family, each time he works on a major crime involving a murder. In IF I FAIL, he deals with three separate cases. Jake's love for children and respect for the institution of marriage is revealed through his close relationship with his partner, Louie, and the man's wife and children. When Louie's and his wife introduce him to the lovely Mia, Jake sees a chance at love. Yet, with Mia and Jake carrying personal baggage, plus by the demands of Jake's job, they struggle with their attraction. The couple's budding relationship is further threatened when Jake's old girlfriend, a suspect in the most hideous of his murder cases, stalks Mia. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy a fast-paced mystery.

This is a debut novel, and it earned the five stars given. A murder mystery, several actually, a police-who-dun-it, romantic elements, great characters and great writing make this a book you really hate to have to put down. I've never worked in a police station, but the writing put me in there, listening and watching the detectives do their thing. Never once was I pulled out of the story. I really liked the main character, Jake, and his partner, Louie. If you like murder mysteries, you will love this book. I highly recommend If I Fail, A Jake Carrington Mystery.

This was a great read. It is filled with realtime police work, as the pair try to solve a murder, which swiftly turns into two. They are racing the clock, and they use every skill and resource they have to bring a killer to justice.

I liked that this books realistic. They were using everything they could to find the killer, but they didn’t suddenly do so and they didn’t find themselves using millions worth of kit that most departments wouldn’t have, so it felt down to earth. It was also interesting getting to know the two, and how they combined to make a great team, when on the job. They have very different methods and personalities, which works we’ll together, especially in the field.

The level of extra connection that Jake’s past added to the crime made me feel even more attached to both him and the solving of the crime.

Overall, this was a very good read and one I really enjoyed.

This is a paint-by-numbers police procedural, pretty interesting but not particularly original. Some awkward phrasing and a little too much reliance on thesaurus words. Too many unhinged suspects, and the main character dated the sister of one of the murder victims who is also a suspect? No.

The worst part was the awkward romance and even more awkward sex scenes. I find many series get better as they go along and the author gets comfortable with their characters. However, these books are only available for purchase and right now anyway I'm not inclined to buy book two.

The book ended very abruptly. I would have liked a more definitive answer on who was leaving the dead animals on the girlfriend's porch. Clearly the aftermath of the murder of the main character's sister as a teenager is going to run through multiple books.

I received this arc from Netgalley.

This was a pretty good read. It got off to a strong start. There were a few places that it became long-winded. The ending could have been better.

I received this this book through Goodreads Giveaway. First of all it is a police procedural, not a thriller. It wasn't bad, but didn't "rock my world". At times it seemed rather disjointed. I did enjoy the relationship between Jake and his partner Louie.

Could have been more. Not compelling reading.

A "police procedural" this book follows two police detectives trying to solve two murders. I felt the book lacked in depth character development as well as a smooth flowing story line. Writing was disjointed, POV changing multiple times, for no discernible reason.

I had actually given up reading it (rare for me) and picked it up again after a couple of weeks.

I received this book as a Goodreads Giveaway.

I really liked this book. Jake Carrington is a likeable protagonist and the story line(s) kept me not wanting to put the book down. I did, however, feel like I hit a brick wall when I got to the end - it was very abrupt.

My review of Marian Lanouette's IF I FAIL
5.0 out of 5 stars A Crime Thriller You Can't Put Down, July 15, 2015
By virginia mckevitt (New Orleans, LA, USA)
This review is from: If I Fail: A Jake Carrington Mystery (Paperback)
I really loved this book. This is a ‘who done it’ that grips you with the first page and keeps going. Lanouette does an incredible job in keeping up the suspense in this fast paced page turner that is a first in the series
Detective Jake Carrington has his hands full trying to solve three crimes, while dealing with the death of his sister and maybe a chance at love, if his partner, Louie has anything to say about it
This mystery-romance gives you characters that are fully fleshed out and makes you care what happens to them. There is nothing predictable about this story and it kept me wanting to see what happened next.
Jake Carrington’s love interest, Mia gives the crime thriller a softer side but the baggage the two carry with them might destroy the relationship, or worse yet, Mia has a stalker who is a suspect in one of Jake’s cases. You’ll have to read the book to know more. I highly recommend IF I FAIL by Marian Lanouette and give it five stars!

I very much enjoyed If I Fail. I fell in love with Jake Carrington from the first character summary that I was lucky enough to read. The fact that he is damaged just makes you love him and pull for him all the more. Marian Lanouette writes in that unique way that helps you to actually watch the scene unfold before you. I could totally see this as an episodic drama. I enjoyed the relationship between Jake and his partner Louie immensely. It is a working relationship that is based on mutual respect and friendship. The cases were real, believable and at times heart wrenching. I also enjoyed the developing relationship between Jake and Mia. I not-so patiently await the next installment in the Jake Carrington Mystery Series, Burn In Hell. Come on January! If I Fail, A Jake Carrington Mystery by Marian Lanouette

I received a copy of this novel as a firstreads giveaway so thank you Goodreads and Marian.

Marian Lanouette's debut novel If I Fail, A Jake Carrington Mystery is a page-turner that gives you a view into the lives of the police. The story felt genuine as the characters, especially the titular character Jake, were believable and easy to relate to while the way multiple cases and Jake's personal life entwined throughout the novel made Marian's writing feel more realistic and lifelike than a simple story, instead giving what I feel is an accurate view of the life of a cop. My only gripe with the novel is that the ending felt a bit anti-climatic, however it adds to the believability of the story as a whole.

I would definitely recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a believable police procedural or murder-mystery novel. I look forward to reading more of Jake's adventures in the future!

If you love police procedurals, hunky detectives, complicated love lives, and ambitious criminals, then you must read ALL THE DEADLY LIES. Marian Lanouette writes about cops’ lives with an authenticity that is lacking in many novels. She brings “real life” into Jake Carrington’s life by having him juggle multiple cases and a personal life, and sometimes he fails. He’s human and misses dinner dates and clues, but he never stops trying to do what’s right. His relationship his partner, a happily married dad of three, brings depth to the storyline while highlighting what we love in Jake-a true guy. I felt like I had a seat in the middle of the Wilkesbury Department and watched, real time, as the drama unfolded. The crimes are twisty, with red herrings to challenge the armchair detectives that live within us.

I love Jake. He's not perfect. He's got baggage that weighs him down. He can be a bit pushy and all alpha male at times. He makes mistakes. But don't you just love a real guy? He's also dedicated to his job and best friend. He's compassionate and filled with passion and empathy.

Mia is a great match for Jake. She's not going to let him get away with crap and isn't afraid to stand up for herself.

Marian Lanouette did a great job keeping the pages turning with If I Fail. Multiple cases to solve, a stalker, and a hot love story. She's a breath of fresh air in the mystery genre and I can't wait until the next book comes out!

In her debut book, Marian Lanouette, has delivered the goods! Won't be long before we see her on the Best Seller's List! In richly developing her characters, she makes me love them, hate them, or want to be them. The book is a riveting page turner that I most certainly did not want to see end! Thank goodness the next book in her Jake Carrington series is coming in January so I don't have to hold my breath too long!

The characters in this book really stand out. They are real, gritty people that I want to learn more about. In addition to not one, but three murder mysteries, the story delves into the inner workings of a cop's life and their families. I loved Ms. Lanouette's humor and snappy dialogue. I can't wait to read the next installment - Burn In Hell!

Good, I liked the plot and the way the reader saw the many cases the homicide unit dealt with. Jake is a very likable character and I loved the other detectives, especially the partnership relationship between Louie and Jake. I did not like Mia as much but that was because she was very believably flawed, while being a smart, independent woman.

I gave this book five stars because I liked the originality of not having just one case throughout the book but a few, which I think is like it is in reality for a police force. Jake Carrington is an engaging character, as was Louie, his sidekick.

The romance was a nice touch and there was enough mystery to keep me reading.

Good book

Good in terms of I was interested in seeing where the story was going, so kept reading. I did not like the sex scenes/descriptions - thought unnecessary. Also, did not think the relationship between Jake and Louie rang true. I enjoy Connelly's Harry Bosch books so much more. Can't imagine that I will read more of her books - sorry
