Cocky Hero Club

Slick Senator

Rate this book
When my college crush, Talbot Richardson--who didn't even know I existed--was elected to the United States Senate, I bragged a little too loudly that I knew him.

Oops.

Did I really know the sexiest, slickest guy on campus?

Not a chance in hell.

Unless knowing someone is following them around campus to see which dorm they live in, and which class they have at eight a.m. on Wednesdays.

Oh, and I might have stalked him in the dining hall, too. Turned out he ate a lot of grilled cheese.

And thanks to my big mouth, the paper I work for now expects me to do a story on him because he's not granting interviews. Not even to Anderson Cooper.

But surely he'll meet me since we went to college together? Right?

Logical assumption. Except that he doesn't know me from a hole in the wall.

But I wasn't about to blow my chance with the paper. Writing obituaries for three years at one of the country's top newspapers was not my idea of a fulfilling career, especially since the money I'd borrowed for my Ivy League education could buy a small country. I wanted more--I wanted to report on real news. I wanted to prove myself, and even work in the face of danger. A girl's got to have dreams.

All I needed was a break.

No question, I was getting an interview with Talbot Richardson if it was the last thing I did. If I had to beg, borrow, steal, or... even take my panties off.

I detest the cover - that guy does not fit the storyline at all. Ok - from there it was my first book by this author. The writing wasn't bad, but the storyline wasn't what I expected and a little disappointing. Otherwise, I found a quick and sometimes funny story that I neither loved or hated. Sometimes it was a bit boring and lost its forward movement. There wasn't a lot of angst -- just some political "baby daddy" drama and an "obits" reporter trying for her first big gig to move into the newsroom by using a little not-so-honest trick up her sleeve.

Slightly put off by the smug looking model on the front, I decided to not judge the book by its cover and see what the story was all about. I’m not gonna lie, I didn’t love it. The characters grated on me at times and I just found the whole storyline slightly cringey. 🤷🏼‍♀️

As I slowly make my way through the Cocky Hero Club books, some I am finding average whereas others are amazing. It also shows me that I now have to seriously read British Bedmate by Penelope Ward and Vi Keeland as the two Cocky Hero Clubs that I have enjoyed the most have used that book as their starting point. As those who have read British Bedmate will know - the book features Bridget who falls in love with the sexy British doctor Simon and they have an amazing love for one another which shows in Slick Senator as the pair feature throughout as our main female character Cricket Curtain is best friends with Bridget. Cricket works at the Washington times as an obituaries writer which she doesn't mind but wishes she was out chasing bigger and better stories. I have to admit I think it would be fun writing the obits and I loved all the pre-emptive ones they had on hand too - what a clever idea. Out with the crew for drinks one night, they are talking about the new and upcoming senator Talbot Richardson. Talbot Richardson was Cricket's college crush and at the table, she blurts out that she knew him. This leads her editor to want her to get an interview and it could be her big break out of obituaries. The thing is Cricket may have exaggerated, just how much she knew him and thus begins Cricket's adventure to get him to notice her. This won't be difficult though as the pair click and a romance begin. I have to admit I liked this story as it was just a sweet genuine romance tale and both characters including Cricket was upfront about her job to him, so there weren't any secrets per se, not dangerous ones anyway. If you get a chance to read any of the Cocky Hero Club books - make sure you add Slick Senator to your reading lists.

Slick Senator was a quick and easy read, but it made for a gripping addition to the Cocky Hero Club. I confess, it wasn’t quite a full four-star rating. It was, however, a book I had to round up.

I quickly fell for the characters in this one and was wearing a smile with many of the things that took place. I was hooked on the way things grew, and I was desperate to see how all the pieces came together. I do feel things were a bit too easy – especially with how everything came together in the epilogue to ensure everything was wrapped up nicely – but that wasn’t enough to remove my enjoyment of the journey.

All in all, another great addition to the Cocky Hero Club and another addictive little read from Mika Lane.

Slick Senator by Mika Lane was a quick and easy read that had me smiling from page 1. As a huge fan of the Cocky Hero Club Series, I was particularly excited to read this book based on the blurb and premise.
Talbot is a the youngest senator ever elected and he’s hot and sexy to boot. Caught up in a baby scandal makes him the most sought after person by journalists and he’s lying low.
Cricket writes obituaries for a living and is bored to tears, that is until she discovers that the sexy senator is her college crush, who she stalked unashamedly throughout school. Bragging that she knows him gets her the unwanted attention of her boss’s boss and the task to garner an interview with the man of the moment.
What ensues next is a hilarious cat and mouse game of will they or won’t they as Cricket resumes her stalking tendencies and manages to catch the attention of the senator. They are adorable together and watching them fall hard and fast for one another makes this book a treat to read. TBR and Enjoy.

Cricket and Talbots story had me laughing throughout. Cricket writes obituaries and has a stalker streak that started with Talbot in college and when she brags she knows the up and coming Senator she’s not aware of the attention she’s about to get or the fact that she’s about to be a stalker again.

First, he’s not slick. He’s actually the opposite of a slick Senator. He’s honest and working against the establishment.

Second, she’s a lying, conniving, weak character that’s just not sympathetic. I was rooting for them not to work out.

The story ends abruptly with barely any conclusion. Even the epilogue is a HFN, not a HEA. So there’s hope he dumps her.

Cricket Curtain- Obit writer for the Washington Chronical. Graduate of George Washington University. Sort of Salk of one Senator Richardson.
Talbot Richardson- youngest Senator ever elected to the US Senate. Graduate of George Washington University. Lover of women, collector of Scandal.
I love a good steamy chemistry driven romance and political novel and Slick Senator did not disappoint. I loved every scandal filled moment. This book had it all. Great Flirty Banter, Steam love scenes, and puppy videos.
I really wanted to dislike Senator Talbot Richardson. I thought for sure that where there is one scandal there would be more. He surrounds himself with a chief of staff who is a total hound dog. I just felt like this was going to end badly for Cricket. I expected huge heart ache for her.
Cricket is one of the funniest quirkiest characters I have read in a long time. I loved her obsession with puppy videos. Her stalker skills are going to make her an excellent career in journalism. The back story for Cricket was relatable and gave her a lot of depth.
This was a fun flirty read. With a fantastic HEA. I read this book in one sitting. The storyline moves and has so many great supporting characters and protagonist. I loved these characters and story so much I wanted more. I would give with a 4.5/5 read.

4.5 Stars for Slick Senator
Mika Lane is a new author to me but after reading this book I will certainly be checking out other works by this talented author. One of the things I love about the world of Cocky Hero’s is finding new authors to enjoy and follow and it’s also a great opportunity to meet new characters with the old making a few cameo appearances. Slick Senator is a fun sweet yet sexy read and I loved seeing an average girl catch a break and meet the hot successful guy who falls for her as well as getting her the break she needs with her career, it’s escapism and it’s just what we need with everything the world is going through at the moment. I fell hook line and sinker for Cricket and Talbot, I smiled and I swooned and I really didn’t want their story to end, so I highly recommend this gem of a read as it’s a great addition to the Cocky Hero World. Great job Mika Lane

Cricket and Talbot were an interesting couple. Their story is full of humor, awkwardness (I am always down for some awkward people!), and romance. I love that Cricket went to school to be a journalist and change the world, and here she is, writing obituaries for the last three years. It sounds like the type of situation so many college kids find themselves in. I liked what it brought to the story, with her very determined to get a huge interview. I recommend reading this!

This is the first book that I have read by this author and I didn't really know what to expect. This book is a real will they wont they and is a quick, fun and sexy read. This is a stand alone book from the Cocky Hero Club Series.

Cricket is a journalist and only writes obituaries at the minute but really wants a change in her life, she is bored and wants to report on real news stories. When she sees that her college crush is the new senator she cant believe it and starts stalking him again after bragging to everyone that she knows him and now the paper that she works for what her to do a story on him. Oopps!!

Talbot is the youngest and sexiest senator that has ever been elected and he gets caught up in a scandal and now this could change everything.

This author has written a story that flows and the characters Cricket is totally awesome. She is very funny and bubbly and fun and the chemistry that they have between each other is so strong. This book has steamy moments and scandalous moments that holds your attention because you want to see what happens next in their journey. Thank you to the author and the publishers for allowing me to read an early copy of this book in exchange for a complimentary honest voluntary review. This book is a great installment in the Cocky Hero World and I cant wait to read the next in the series.

This book is expected to be re;leased on 14th June 2020.

This is a first time reading this author and I enjoyed it. This was a great addition to the Cocky Hero world. I enjoyed watching, Cricket, a quirky girl, get her happily ever after with Talbot, the should be unattainable guy. I would have liked this story more if it hadn't been for the parents. I didn't understand how Talbot was okay with how they acted, or even why they acted that way in general. I don't think it added to the story.

I will look for more from this author in the future.

This was a quick and easy read. Cricket and Talbot’s story was sweet and really fun to read. I truly enjoyed Cricket, she's all awkward and quirky. It would say Cricket is the slick one compared to Talbot because of what she did. She needed to score an interview with Talbot, who is "supposed" to be he friend from university. But he does not even know her then. That's when she start her antics to get to Talbot, which was pretty hilarious I'd say.

How would it turn out? You'll just have to read it

This is my first introduction to this author and talk about starting with a bang.

Cricket is a lovely sweet girl. She’s a reporter and wants to get the story on Talbot the young senator. This could be her big break that she needs.

I found this a well written fun read.

Great addition to this collection.

I am a drama addict. This story fell way short for me. There were a few minor hiccups. But nothing that lasted. I needed more relationship. A very few "dates" and a couple sexy times just doesn't do it for me. I need romance, and hard work. I need to feel the commitment. I think the storyline was great, and wish it had been more.

First book by Mika Lane and it was a fun read. It’s always great to see the average girl to finally catch a break and meet a hot rich guy and get a promotion in her career for a job well done. There were so many sweet scenes, several lol moments and plenty of hot steamy scenes too. Definitely loving the Cocky Hero Series.

Slick Senator has us spending a little more time with the characters from British Bedmate as Cricket and Talbot try to push for a bill on love. Their story is full of lies, secrets and revelations. It is a little flirty, fun and entertaining as Cricket gets a second chance with her college crush. A story with plenty of heat and drama to keep you engaged right to the very end.

4.5 STARS REVIEW>

Adult Contemporary Romance, Political

First Person, Dual-POV

This book is part of the Cocky Hero Club: original works from various authors inspired by Keeland and Ward's New York Times bestselling Cocky Bastard series. This is a standalone story inspired by British Bedmate. The main characters from that book have a cameo appearance in this story.

As a follower of Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward's work, I've truly enjoyed the idea of this collection.

This was another amazing story. I loved this book! This was a fun, sexy romance.

I also loved the cameo appearance by Simon and Bridget. It was fun to see a glimpse of favorite characters.

31.5/35 STARS –  4.5 STARS (between 31.5 stars and 33 stars)

Addictiveness: 5 Character: 5 Cover: 3.5 Freshness: 4 Plot: 4.5 Romance: 5 Writing Style: 4.5

Action 1/5 Angst 1/5 Darkness 0/5 Humor 5/5 Romance 5/5 Suspense/Mystery 1/5

Would I recommend? Yes, if you like fun, sexy romance.

Would I re-read this book/series? Yes!

Would I read more from the author? Yes, I loved her writing style.

Addictiveness: 5/5 This was a fun, sexy romance that had me laughing out loud many times. As addictive as chocolate!!!

Character: hero 5/5, heroine 5/5, secondary characters 4/5, growth 5/5, real 5/5 Multidimensional characters with good background and great story arch.

Cricket was a wonderful heroine!!!! I really loved her. She was fun, hardworking and sweet. She went after her dreams at the same time she never lost herself in the process. She didn't have her dream job to begin with, but she kept going and trying to find ways to get there.

Talbot was a good hero. Different than most heroes now-a-days, he wasn't a jerk at all. He was a good guy with a great head on his shoulders. He also didn't have the job he dreamed of, but he also didn't allowed his family to take over his life. He was a good boyfriend, a good person and a good politician.

Secondary characters I loved to see the friendship of Cricket and Bridget and the cameo appearance of Simon. I liked her newspaper friend and didn't like his best friend that much. The parents were not amazing, but not horrible either. They were all well constructed characters that took me into a myriad of different emotions.

Villain/antagonists ... one clear villain, a few antagonists.

All characters were easy to love, connect and understand.

Freshness: 4/5 That was nothing out of the world original here, but the author gave the reader a plot that felt different than most stories out there. As fresh as mint mentos!!!

Plot: believable 4.5/5, conflict 4/5, dialogue 5/5, ending 5/5, enjoyment 5/5, opening 5/5, pace 5/5, setting 5/5, subplots 5/5, twists 4/5  Great opening and exciting ending. Believable plot, with sexy dialogues and great pace. Good setting, with great subplots. High level of enjoyment!

I've loved the concept for this plot and how it felt original than most stories out there. The stalker tendencies of the female character were light and fun, nothing really worrisome.

Romance: believable 5/5, chemistry 5/5, description 5/5, development 5/5, steam 5/5  I loved how they met and how they kept meeting each time. It was fun. At the same time, their chemistry was hot and the description of smut was great. Cab.... airplane... a few good places. :) Amazingly descriptive smut and hot romance!

Writing Style: 4.5/5 Multifaceted characters, with well written plot, great pace, sexy romance, amazing dialogues... everything in a cohesive, clean writing style. Great writing!!!

Cover: art 3.5/5, title 5/5, color-font 5/5, buy 4/5  I’m obsessed with book covers. I love to find snippets of the stories within the art. This one was ok. Too generic for me. What really attracted me was the title and the fact that was part of the Cocky Hero Club. I missed a subtitle or something that gave me more of a glimpse of this particular story. I would probably buy this book by its cover, but I had to read the blurb.

I also have to say that even though Cricket stalker tendencies were light and funny I believed they would be more important to the story.

You MAY read this because you love the original series; you SHOULD read this because you enjoy the author; you MUST read this because of the fun, sexy romance!!!

I cannot get enough of Mika Lane’s words !! I just discovered her two months ago but have already devoured seven books!

I loved all the choices Mika made in this story, from Cricket’s profession to the delightful chase! Their story was sexy and flirty with a great tease affect to it and funny and full of heart. Well thought out plot with really good secondary characters that added to the enjoyment of the story.

This story is more about the chase rather than the capture of each other’s hearts which made it unique and quirky for me and again, a blast to read!

Man am I enjoying these Cocky Hero Club Novels! I have thoroughly enjoyed every one I have read so far and this one was fantastic! I haven't read any books by Mika Lane prior to this one but I will surely be checking her out now.

Talbot Richardson is the youngest senator, turning 30 during his campaign. Now, with his feet barely wet, he in embroiled in a paternity scandal. Cricket Curtain writes obits for the Washington Post and dreams of becoming a bonafide journalist. While out with her colleagues one night, she embellishes a tale of knowing Talbot when they were in college together. They did attend college together, but it was more like Cricket had a crush on him and stalked him and he had no idea she existed. When her editor hears of it, he instructs her to get an exclusive interview. The Senator is not speaking to the press right now.

Now this is where Cricket (I loved her nickname, her real name is Catherine) gets creative. She gets back into stalking mode and I had to laugh at her antics to get to Talbot! She was adorable and she sure gets his attention. These two together were so sweet and so far removed from the sleazy scumbags of DC politics. Like Cricket, I, too, wondered what a rube was. But I loved Halliday's nicknames, she was so down to earth!

Talbot and Cricket didn't have an easy path but it sure was entertaining. From the DogHouse to the Community Center these two had pure hearts and matching souls. I loved their story and flew threw it in one day. I hated to see it end but was very pleased with the ending! Really a wonderful book!

Cricket is an amazing & hilarious heroine that I couldn't get enough of. She went to a fancy school so she could change the world through journalism, but actually ends up writing obituaries for the past 3 years. One day she decides to tag along with some of her colleagues, and when they start talking about the new handsome Senator, Talbot Richardson, she gets a head of herself & fudges that she knows him from going to the same college. However, it's more like she had a crush on him & stalked him which kept me laughing a ton. He's involved with a baby scandal, so his attorney is telling him that he can't grant interviews until it's over, but Cricket was given the chance to write about him, so she's determined to get that interview no matter what. Whet follows is a hilarious bunch of chance meetings (or so he thinks), chemistry in spades, heartwarming moments, and finally a slow burn that fully ignites! So, does Talbot get out of the baby scandal, and will Cricket get the first interview?! You'll have to hit those one click buttons to find out! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Another great addition to the Cocky Hero Club novels. This was the first book I have read from Mika and I will be reading more. Cricket(absolutely love that name) is a writer. But she writes things that would upset normal people. Not saying that Cricket is normal. She writes about the people who have passed on. She wants more, she wants to write more but doesn't know how to go about getting it. Until fate puts something in her path. Talbot newly appointed to the Senate has a scandal on his hands. Cricket claims she knows him and tells her boss that she can get an interview with him. But will things be that easy? I absolutely loved the chemistry between these two. It was instant, intense and interesting. This was a well written, enjoyable storyline from beginning to end. Mika did a wonderful job with Cricket and Talbot. I recommend one clicking this one.

Slick Senator by Mika Lane is the story of Catherine 'Cricket' Curtain and Talbot Richardson. This book is a part of the Cocky Hero Club series, but can be a standalone book if you wish to do so.
Cricket works at the Washington paper as an obituaries writer which she is happy to have the job but does dream about stories with more adventure. When she opens her mouth to brag about knowing the Senator Talbot she is put in charge of getting a interview. Cricket 'knows' him but really only in her mind and when she used to be obsessed with him at college not that she actually knows the man.
Talbot is the youngest Senator which leads to him being the subject on rumors but now he is caught up in a scandal that leads him to stop speaking to the press. So Cricket goes into stalking mode again but this time her outcome is very different. Really enjoyed their story! 0

Stalkers shouldn't be rewarded, right? In Cricket's case, well... I'll give a pass since her college crush became a young senator. Cricket was bored with her job as an obit writer... seriously, they hire people to write those??... I digress. So when she says she when to college with Talbot Richardson and is assigned to write a story about him, it shouldn't be difficult. Only if you grossly exaggerate your knowledge of him. But, that doesn't stop Cricket.

I loved the quirkiness of Cricket mixed with Talbot's serious senator demeanor. It made for an enjoyable read from start to finish. Ms. Lane did a spectacular job of crafting a story that was funny and provided a great escape from the current world we live in.

I received an advanced copy of this book at my request and voluntarily left this review.

What happens when you put your foot in your mouth saying you are buddy-buddy with the youngest Senator in the US? Well not you have to eat crow and go try to get an interview no one is able to get. Cricket has a plan and when she goes to see Talbot she realized he has no clue who she is. But she won't give up. She wants out of writing obits and to do that she needs this story. But sometimes things take a turn when Talbot take a liking to her. Now they are a team working to help save one cause at a time. But when truth and secrets are revealed will these two be able to have a true love story or will it bomb on Capital Hills?
