4 star review of Murder On The Mountain (Marshall Brothers #1) by Carolyn LaRoche

Carolyn LaRoche is a new author to me. Two of my favourite types of reads together romance and mystery, what more could I ask for? I’m not to sure where to start with this review as I do not want to give any spoilers away.

Murder On The Mountain had me invested in from the first page to the last, I could not put it down.

Emma Thomas, an investigative reporter is back in her home town to investigate a drug trafficking gang, but bullets are soon flying her way and she goes to the only man she knows she can trust, Detective Adam Marshall, to help her; the only problem is he is the man responsible for her leaving Staunton in the first place.

The writing was strong and had me on the edge of my seat.  The intrigue, suspense, danger and secrets had me riveted.

Will danger bring Emma and Adam back together or will it destroy their relationship for good?

Emma Thomas is an investigative reporter and when she gets an anonymous tip about where a drug spot location is, she heads up to try and break the story. Yet she is shocked when she is the witness to a murder and now the killer is after her.
Detective Adam Marshall was close friends with Emma growing up but then she suddenly left town. He is shocked when she arrives at the station asking for him and explains what has happened and he knows that she stumbled on the case he has been working on.
Can Adam keep Emma safe from the killer when it is clear that she is willing to do whatever she can to break the story on her own? Will Emma open up to Adam about why she left town and find a way to get over the past?
This was a great murder mystery with thrown in!
I liked Emma and I admired her perseverance in going after the story although I was worried about how little regard she seemed to have for her own life. Yet through the story you begin to understand why it is so important to her and my heart broke a little for everything she had been through.
I loved Adam right from the beginning and I hated how the case with Emma reminded him of the last case he was involved in that really turned personal. I felt awful and knew he was going to do whatever he could to protect Emma.
There were a few times I was definitely worried that Emma was going to try and sneak off on her own, more than she already did but I was super proud of her when she stayed. I was happy that Adam was able to find a few key pieces that started getting everything to fall into place.
There were a few clues that were dropped that made things fall into place and I was freaking a little when something happened to Emma and you find out who all is involved. I had complete faith in Adam but things were not made easy by the writer and I loved how it all went down at the end!
The end made me super happy and I am really looking forward to more of this series and Adam’s brothers!

A fast-paced romantic suspense story and an ending you won't suspect. Our heroine and hero were best friends throughout school but tragic circumstances kept them apart for many years. The story of their reunion and their work together to find a murderer will keep you engaged to the end. Highly recommend.

Who doesn't love a good murder mystery? And when the author does it so brilliantly, you know you're on to a winner. This book did not disappoint. Well-crafted and developed characters, who came to life on the page, pushed this story along beautifully. A well-developed storyline with fabulous gripping moments. Readers will be immersed in the story from the first page.

This story definitely packed a suspenseful punch while still giving you the romantic feels. I loved Adam’s super protective personality paired with Emma’s independent streak, as well as the chemistry. On the murder mystery side, this story kept things interesting with twists that you don’t see coming. It leaves you guessing right up until the end. An enjoyable read, for sure.

This is the first book by Carolyn I have read. Emma hasn’t been home for years but she is back now. Not completely by choice. Adam is now a detective. He has never stopped loving Emma. When she comes in to his office with twigs in her hair and covered in dirt, he knows something bad has happened. Emma has stumbled onto something and found herself in trouble. Someone is after her because of what she saw. Adam has to decide if he is going to protect her himself and reopen what happened between them. Both Adam and Emma have changed. But, have they changed so much that they couldn’t work? Both Adam and Emma have guilt over something that happened when they are younger. Then Adam lost another woman he loved because of his career. Could he open his heart again? Could he take the chance on losing another woman he loves? I was hooked right from the start. This was a great suspenseful read with a hint of romance. Great job Carolyn. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Holy smokes Batman! Murder on the Mountain had my heart racing. Have you ever done something that you might have had an inkling was stupid, but you're stubborn and did it anyways? Then it ended in disaster? Yeah? Then I think you will relate very well to our heroine, Emma. She is just a tad bit stubborn with a feisty side, but she is also wickedly smart and ambitious. Add in some very well placed tension with our hero, Detective Adam and well you have a recipe for some hot stories.
What I think I loved most about this story is that it isn't all about the love and heat. It has a true plot in the mystery Emma uncovered. The high stakes case adds to the tension and gets the reader on the edge of their seat. Trust me when I say there is no way you will know where this author is taking the story.

Murder on the Mountain was just the book I was needing. This is the first by this author I have read and I can't wait to dive into the next book in the series. I was lucky to get an ARC.

So many things I could say could spoil the book so all I can really say is I was hooked from the get go and didn't want it to end. The author write very well and sucks you in to the life of her characters.

The suspense, the mystery, the danger and feelings of love from the past was all written on point that you want to know it will all play out with Adam and Emma. Will it bring them together or destroy them completely?

I have been needing to switch up genres and this was a great one for that. It still had romance a little bit but it wasn't the focal point.

This book is the first part of a series about the Marshall Brothers. Carolyn LaRoche is a new author to me, but this definitely won’t be the first book of hers that I read. I enjoyed trying to figure out who was in on the murder and crime ring, and I’m glad it took me a bit to figure it out.
Emma Thomas is back in her hometown to housesit for her parents and try to catch a big story. She investigates a lead at a remote cabin and witnesses a crime. Unfortunatly, she’s seen, so she runs to police detective Adam Marshall, her high school boyfriend. Adam is surprised to see her, but does everything in his power to protect her from the killer.
I am really looking forward to book 2 of this series!

Dead girlfriend alert

## I detest stories with dead wives or dead girlfriends. Too much page time dedicated to them. The guilt, the comparisons....bleh. The hero was in love with her and they talked about marriage & kids, but she died before they got engaged. I reaIly don't want to read about other women the hero was involved with. Not my cup of tea.

Emma Thomas is an investigative reporter who goes back to her home town of Staunton, but trouble is not far away. She turns to Detective Adam Marshall, a friend from school as well as someone who she was once close to.

This book started off quite dramatically and grabbed my attention straight away. It continued to have lots of action and drama causing a lot of excitement- with your heart rate jumping higher. 😂

I found it easy to like Adam with his protective and caring manner. He wasn’t overly all alpha male and showed respect for women. I liked Emma, however, at times she drove me nuts with the decisions she made, but then again it made for a more interesting storyline. 😉

This is a lighter suspense story but has a great twist that I honestly didn’t see coming but loved. The romance element was also sweet but deep and heavy on the romance.

Cat gives this one 4 Meows 0 purrs ( no sex)
Murder in the Mountain is a clean suspense with romantic undertones. There is plenty of sexual chemistry between Emma and Adam.
Emma has returned home to take care of her parents dogs and home while they take the trip of a lifetime. Emma has stumbled upon a drug case right there in her hometown that might be the ticket to get her back into freelance investigative reporting. When she witnessed a murder she runs right to the one man she ran from 12 years ago for help.
This story has a great premise and a couple good twists. There is the hint of romance and a very sweet happy ending. I enjoyed the book immensely and devoured it in one sitting.
There was a few loose ends for me and things I still want to know about ( can’t mention here sunsets I don’t t want to leave spoilers ) one thing I can mention was at one point Emma finds a ring. When she shows the object to Adam it’s called a cuff link. Later it’s back to a ring then near the end it’s once again a cuff link then back to a ring. It made my head spin. It needs to stay a ring lol. But it didn’t hurt the story just kinda slowed things down a minute when your trying to think... wasn’t that a ring?
If you like clean romance, detectives, investigative reporters, strong woman, suspense, second chance and an all over good story this is definitely for you!
(Ps Carolyn...please right the book about Adam and Leslie. If it’s written I want to read it lol)

Murder on the Mountain is my first book from Carolyn LaRoche and it was ok. The opening set the tone for the fast-paced and twisting plot. But I was missing the connection between the two main characters.

That's not to say it was bad. In fact I really liked Emma. She was brave and bold. Tenacious and tough. And also lonely. On the hunt for the story that would save her career, she had no idea what kind of mess she would stumble upon. As such, she had to turn to the one person she didn't know how to face, her former crush and best friend, Adam.

Adam was a bit of a tough nut to crack. He played things by the book (he is a cop after all) but where things with Emma were concerned, things got a little gray. Especially since what she encountered went hand-in-hand with his current investigation. And as the danger and threats kept mounting it was all he could do to stay one step ahead and keep Emma safe. It was all building and just when Adam thought he had a handle on things, the other shoe dropped.

I didn't see that twist coming and I was reading as fast as my eyes would allow to see how it would all end. While Adam and Emma dug deep into their shared past trauma, I still wanted more of them reconnecting after so many years living separate lives. All in all, Murder on the Mountain was an action packed, suspenseful second-chance romance.

This was my first Carolyn Laroche novel and I will certainly look for another. A fast paced read that kept me looking for answers, trying to solve the mystery as I read the pages. I mean mystery with a side of romance, why not.

Emma is an investigative reporter and she finds herself back in her home town of Staunton looking for the story of her lifetime. Determined to find the story then pass it along to the authorities. But returning to her home town leads some challenges, memories of the past, people she hasn't seen in a long time and a love she lost. How will she handle it all.

Adam is a good guy police officer who is doing his best to move forward. Or so he keeps telling himself. There has been a lot of tragedy in his life and this little town, but he is still determined. One thing has been missing for a while though and he didn't realize just how much until she comes barreling into his office.

Can Emma and Adam solve the mystery? Is there a hope for them to move on from the past? Could there be a chance for an old love?

The character chemistry was strong but I felt that there could have been a little more throughout the story with them. But that could have just been my preference, trying to tip the scale a little more evenly between mystery and romance.

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.

For the most part, I enjoyed this book.

It's well written, with both Adam and Emma having a say, in the third person. POV flips at random points though, and it got a bit confusing. There are some clear changes, it's just there are also some points its Emma in one paragraph and moves swiftly onto the next paragraph and its Adam.

It's CLEAN. Just some kissing. I struggled with the concept of a single kiss being the reason these two never really loved anyone else after 10 years. A Hig School kiss under the mistletoe. Just a bit odd to me, is all. Might make perfect sense to some, maybe I'm just too cynical.

There is violence, but dealing with a drug lord was never gonna be a picnic, now was it? It's not very graffic, it's just there and needed. But for the violence, I would have tagged this young adult. It's just a tad too much for that, but one scene less and it would be.

I liked this book, I did not love it. This is the first in a series of the brothers Marshall, 6 of them, I think Adam said at some point but I forget already. It is also the first of Ms LaRoche I've read. Will I read more? I will certainly try. I DID finish this book.

3 good solid stars, just not really one for me.

I enjoyed the dynamic between Emma and Adam. Despite their years apart, their friendship resumed as though no time had passed, their emotional attachment beyond this is more complex.
This is a sweet small town, second chance, mystery romance between two people who loved each other as teens but couldn’t say the words. Life happened and they went their separate ways only for life to throw them together in intense circumstances.
Emma comes across as very self-assured and confident yet slightly jaded by the cards life has dealt her.
Adam is wounded by those he’s lost, and he blames himself. He goes into full protection mode when Emma is in danger while fighting feelings that leap to the surface when he sees her again.
The mystery of the bad guy’s identity kept me guessing. I wasn’t shocked at his identity, but I had suspected someone else for a bit.
The secrets from their pasts weren’t really juicy or worth hiding from each other. I felt they overdramatized them in their inner monologues because once they were revealed, they had no impact on the developing adult relationship between the two.

The mystery is solid. The police procedural work reads legit, but I think Adam gets close to crossing boundaries occasionally.

I received a copy of Murder on the Mountain to review for Hot Tree Publishing.

I get so excited when I find a new to me author! It’s like opening up a whole new world and I can’t wait to explore it.

We find ourselves starting out with lots of suspense at the beginning of the book after Emma witnesses a murder and she barely escapes getting killed herself. She immediately runs to the police station and to the one person she knows she can trust. Adam is her childhood best friend she left behind but she knows without a doubt he can help her.

Adam and Emma find themselves sticking together even though he should keep her locked away in protective custody. The action never stops and it only takes a matter of days to figure out who is behind the drug trafficking and cartel murder Emma witnessed.

While they are dealing with staying alive Emma and Adam are fighting old feelings that they can’t keep buried and finally come to terms with their past. Adam is determined to keep Emma forever and she little does he know that she is completely on board with that.

This read is action packed and full of love! Definitely worth trying out.

Murder on the Mountain is a clean romance with a ton of suspense which you can probably tell from the title. Emma Thomas comes back home & stumbles on a murder when pursuing a lead sent to her. Unfortunately for her, the murderer sees her & it's off to the races we go. She goes straight to Detective Adam Marshall, as they grew up together, and there are unresolved feelings there as well. Now it's a race against time to keep her safe while trying to figure out who dun it for the pair, all the while dealing with their past. There were just a couple of things which kept me from giving this story a 5 star since suspense/mystery is right up my alley. First, it's told in 3rd person which always confuses me, but luckily, this story got exciting quickly so it didn't register anymore since I was all in. There were also a few questions left that I felt like I needed answers to at the end of the day. Anyway, this was a read that had me devouring in one sitting, so hit those one click buttons to see who dun it & why! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Murder On The Mountain
By: Carolyn LaRoche

REVIEW ☆☆☆☆
Murder On The Mountain was a compelling engaging read. It is a well balanced story with a bit of romance and a bit of dramatic suspense. Emma and Adam are reunited after many years, and the circumstances are not wonderful. Murder, drugs and who knows what else have created this situation throwing these two into each other's lives. Adam and Emma once felt something for each other, but do they still have these feelings? The current situation is dangerous and difficult, but finding answers means working together. This story is fast paced and entertaining from the first. Adam and Emma are interesting characters, and it was fun to see how their relationship evolved. I was glad to find that this was a clean story with no explicit scenes. This book has a lot to offer and will appeal to romantics and thrill seekers alike. I recommend!

Adam & Emma

She needed the story of her career to save said career. As a detective, he needed to protect his town from a drug-dealing cartel. Neither had any idea they both were on the same case that might just take them both down if they didn't solve it first.

Sneaking (investigating) brings Emma to an isolated cabin where she is witness to...and runs to escape. If she escapes the big bad guy chasing her she has only one place to go. The place she planned to avoid on her visit to her home town. The police station to see childhood friend, crush, and detective, Adam Marshall.

It turns out since it is a case he is working, and he knows witness Emma, he takes it on himself to protect her from the cartel likely on her tail. Time together brings back the feelings they both tried to bury. Will they find their past or make it out alive to find a future together?

This was a new to me author that intrigued me by the blurb.

The book started fast paced and action packed but seemed to be missing some ingredient that I just couldn't put my finger on, but in the same breath there was just enough of it to keep me turning the pages. I want to say the lightness of it but that wouldn't be correct with a cartel involved.

Although the storyline kept me reading, I just feel like there was so much potential that wasn't utilized like it could of been. The way it's written I struggled to connect with the characters, neither of them were focused on the right thing. Him I could almost understand why, but her immature ignorance to the bigger picture... It all seemed illogical. Yes it's fiction but still. The twist was good but predicted it early on.

Reading other reviews others don't seem to have the same comments so maybe it's just me and the headspace I'm in.

I would definitely still reccomend giving it a try.

Stephannie's 5 Star Review:
This is the first time I have read Carolyn LaRoche books and I really enjoyed this one.  It has love, murder and mystery to solve. I didn't put this one down; I read it cover to cover.
Emma Thomas is an investigative reporter who is back in her hometown  investigating a drug trafficking occurring in her town. She saw something she shouldn't and now bullets are flying.  She runs to Detective Adam Marshall because she can trust him to help her. The only problem is they have history that had her leaving town in the first place.
This book was full of intrigue, suspense, danger and secrets that had you wanting more. There is danger and once you learn what happened between these two. It has you wanted everything to work out in the end. Will they make it out alive? How are Emma and Adam handling being near each other; will it bring them together or destroy any chance at any type of relationship?

Emma Thomas left Staunton a long time ago and tried to never look back. But when the story of a lifetime comes with the price of going home - she doesn’t blink. Adam Marshall was many things to Emma - but best friend and first love are the top of the list. When people start taking shots at Emma - they are thrown together in a race for the truth and for their lives.

This was a wild ride ands starts right in with the action! Emma is a Lois Lane crusading reporter and Adam Marshall is a classic good guy cop. Their shared history and emotions made me die to know how they would finally get together and move on from the past. Not the steamiest of reads but a serious twist ending made the happily ever after all the sweeter.
