I have one very specific issue with this title: it plays sexual assault for laughs. Is there something ridiculous about a yokai named Turbo Granny stealing a boy's penis? Sure, I might give you that. But there's nothing funny about how upset he is about that or about aliens attempting to rape a teenage girl with their robo-dongs, no matter how silly they look. Nothing actually happens, but it left a bad taste in my mouth, although in all fairness, the content label does mention "horny aliens," so if you read those (and you should, largely because Viz has a lot of fun with theirs), you can't say that you weren't warned.
That distasteful (and recurring) element aside, this is a pretty standard goofy shounen caper. Momo and Okarun set out to convince each other that their favorite paranormal thing is real only to succeed far too well, and now they have to fight evil randy aliens and Okarun is possessed by Turbo Granny. Momo's young-looking grandma's around to sort of help, and things just keep escalating, both in text and art. If the aforementioned jokes don't bother you, you'll probably find plenty to like here.
I kept going back and forth between 3 star or 4. Listen, this shit is DUMB but in a mostly fun way. The boy doesn't believe in ghost but believes in aliens. The girl believes in ghost but not aliens. They each dare each other to go to places that have aliens/ghost. Neither thinks they'll see anything but the boy gets cursed by a spirit who steals his dick. The girl is kidnapped by aliens with metal dicks who want to use the girl for disgusting things.
See here's the thing. This series feel like the author just had a idea and made shit up as he goes. But it does keep you guessing, some hilarious dialogue. The fights also can be pretty epic with solid art.
There's a few too many creepy moments. Our main girl gets her clothes ripped off by thr aliens and almost raped. Then there's creepy panty shot later where rhe ghost lifts her up by leg and long shots of her crotch.
So yeah there's some scenes that rubbed me wrong way. But at the same time this series is crazy fucking weird and lots of surprises so it keeps it entertaining. I'll check out another volume.
Hysterical slice of life/shonen/science fiction/fantasy realism/horror comedy.
Reads like if Rumiko Takahashi and Masaaki Nakayama fused with Haruki Murakami creating an outlandish and unique artistic vision. Brilliant art.
Extremely zany, very addictive, can be surprisingly disturbing despite its often lighthearted nature.
Love the character designs, the chemistry between the leads that the artist conveys in the few understated and quiet moments. Also the rhythm of the panel work is incredible. Full of maniacal tempo changes that are dizzying and overwhelming. It's like the comic book equivalent of a death metal drummer turning his double bass into soup.
I was going to compare Dan Da Dan‘s (good) ridiculousness to that of Chainsaw Man, and then I read the authors note at the end of this volume, which mentions that Tatsu was actually one of the assistants to Fujimoto on Chainsaw Man and Fire Punch…
This series is plain weird so far, but there’s also a strange charm to it? Momo and Okarun are a lead pairing I can already tell I’m going to love, especially if their alien/spirit hobbies lead them towards a romance with each other. The art style is also amazing, arguably even the strongest part of this manga so far. This seems like it’ll be a fun story to read when in need of something light or comedic!
This looks like something that Fujimoto (the creator of "Chainsaw Man") would write.
It's VERY strange and entertaining (just how i like my manga @_@).
But most importantly, the grandmother is hot (and i don't know why but when i saw her mu kujtua artstyle i "Burn the Witch", dukej sikur kishte dal nga ajo manga).
Upon reread I have no new notes, I love this series 💗
One of my absolute favourite series publishing right now. Dandadan is VERY unique in what it’s doing and the plot it funny and serious at the same time. This series really pushes the boundaries of how it can tell it’s story (but it doesn’t push them too far thank God)
Whilst reading the first chapter, all I could think was... What the f am I reading. But after that chapter it became really interesting. Can't wait to read more.
2/2.5 stars. Meh. So slow. The art was stellar, but no amount of great art can make up for how much this story did not connect with me. It had the imagery of shonen I do not care for with suggestive female positioning that is too lurid and objectifying for me. I can get by when there is more humor or interesting story, but weird pacing and sluggish development just didn't connect with me. The added objectifying and women both as sexual objects for the male gaze is just a big ugh for me. The shoving of body parts in an awkward way to be front and center is just ugh and looks uncomfortable...unless it's like gangum style with humor. Anyway, did not enjoy, not for me, but woah, that art is amazing.
On today's episode of level of discomfort 💯 squared: a chaotic AF manga about junk-stealing spirits, horny aliens, and two high-schoolers trying to navigate it all. I don't know if I hate it or love it, seriously. I'll refrain from rating it until I am a few more volumes in.
👹 The manga is about two teenagers who grapple with spirits and aliens (yes, you read it right: both spirits and aliens). 👽 The content is quite raw, e.g., aliens legit attempted to rape the MC, Momo, in the first volume (yes, you read it right; yes, it's disgusting and not adequately addressed) 👹 The grandma is a hot chick wearing basically just a cardigan (yes, you read it right). 👽 And the dude, Okarun, lost his junk to a spirit called "turbo granny," and then when he got it back, he kinda got it back without his balls... Like ah? 👹 All in all, the manga is so F chaotic that it actually works (or it seems to work) 🤷🏻♀️
TW: sexual assault (on page); nudeness; slut shaming
Starting with the positives, I really like the friendship that forms between Momo Ayase and Okarun. But the young and spry grandma (Momo's grandma) is the best character. The combination of aliens and the occult is very interesting. The horror moments are great. But to me its ruined when they had to insert just really weird sexualization. Like come on! Why?
I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I went into this not knowing anything. So I was taken by surprise.
If they structured the story as 2 adolescents fighting off perverted external forces without the graphic sexualization I could understand that.... Alternatively, if they went toward a metaphor with aliens and ghosts as manifestations of puberty...I mean I could also understand that. If they didnt turn sexual assault/rape into a joke. If they didn't sexualize these underage characters.... this could've been a solid read.
Its not only the depiction of female characters. I mean Okarun's genitals are taken away. At one point, Okarun is called to be a man. Could've been an opportunity to show how both characters defy stereotypical gender norms considering that he is fused with the granny ghost. But I dont think that's the direction they will go. Not sure what will happen past this volume but it's leading to Okarun training to get stronger. They already transformed his hair. I wouldn't be surprised if they time lapse a glow-up with muscles so that he can take back his manhood. But it's not like I would be reading more to find out.
Well despite my rating, this isn't actually perfect. The writing is a little sloppy, but it creates a sort of seat of your pants feel that kept me hooked. I truly loved the art, and Momo Ayase is my kind of protagonist. I just think she's fantastic and Okarun has a great deal of growth in a small space. All very cute watching their friendship develop. I love the modernized take on the onmyouji, and think the alien mashup is totally fascinating. I'm super curious where the lore goes. There's lots of weird sexual stuff, kinda occupying the same space as Chainsaw Man, but without the intense thematic connection of sex and death which Chainsaw Man provides. So it's a little much maybe, but as it comes into its own maybe that's just an essential part of the series identity which can flourish beyond the superficial titillation and shock.
¡Me encanta!
This series is…weird. Let’s just say, it makes a lot of sense that Tatsu was Fujimoto’s assistant on Chainsaw Man.
Alien, spirits…both are real and our protagonists find themselves bound to each other by a love for the paranormal and a spiteful old Granny.
This first volume definitely leans into the pervy sexual humor and sets up an interesting conflict of ghosts and alien co-existing. I will definitely pick up the second volume because I feel invested in finding out how weird this series can truly get.
I just spent the last few days getting caught up on Dandadan! This review will serve as my thoughts up until this point, chapter 163. This series has pretty constant and consistent action taking place. It's smooth like butter to read with some pretty great paneling and use of perspective throughout (especially on the spreads). I like the plot quite a bit, it doesn't reinvent the wheel but it does keep itself feeling fresh by constantly jumping between drama and action. If you would have told me that I would enjoy a series that's basically just crazy adventures with ghosts and aliens, I would have laughed, but this series seriously does a great job of being engaging and fresh.
I like the cast of characters. A lot of shonen do a bad job at keeping core members of the "team" involved but this series does a pretty good job of keeping everyone's role in an event pretty clear. I would liken it to early One Piece's Alabasta, where everyone gets their chance and if they do not, that's okay too, people can tag in and out as needed and I think that feels more authentic.
This manga also has some emotional moments that I really did not anticipate given how goofy it can be. It does a really great job of conveying simple emotions, triumphs and shortfalls of human character very effectively. There are some pretty striking panels as well that do a great job of explicit imagery that I did not expect in the slightest.
My biggest complaint is the humor, chibi stuff, and relationship between the two main characters. I get they are high schoolers but it is so corny. The part I caught up to feels like a turning point in the story, so my hope is that the author begins to dial that back a little bit. I am very excited to see how things go.

I picked this up because I heard it talked about favorably in comparison to other titles like Chainsaw Man which I really enjoy. I do see why they were compared, but this one is too far out even for me lol. I might check out the anime when it comes out, but for now I don’t see myself continuing with the manga.
