The wolves waiting in the wind are always watching.

My life has never been normal. Raised by a survivalist, taught how to endure anything, I've learned to rely on myself. To keep my head down-- to mind my own business. That all changes in an instant when I hear the screams.

There, in that filthy alley, I thought I was pulling Emmeline out of the darkness and toward safety, but it turns out, she was pulling me in. My new friend's world collides with my own, and they couldn't be more different. Where I spend my days alone, she rarely can. Not with four brooding brothers hellbent on her protection, watching over her every move like dark guardians.

Guardians that set their sights on me, who want to claim me as their own.

Theirs is a world of violence and bloodshed, of teeth and fangs. Monsters lurk in the shadows, just waiting for their chance to strike. A sane person would be terrified, but even as danger closes in around us, I know without a shadow of a doubt that they’re bigger threats than the ones they tell me I should fear.

To protect their family, they'll become the monsters of legends and myths. The question is, if I’m supposed to be their salvation, does that mean I’m even more cursed than they are?

To save us all, am I willing to damn myself?

**This is a darker themed paranormal romance where the heroine gets all of her men, and contains some graphic detail, so please read the note in the beginning of the book before choosing to read. This is the first of a four book series that follows the same characters, and as such, will end with a cliffhanger, but this is my primary project until it's completed.**

This Woman was the 𝐐𝐔𝐄𝐄𝐍 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐀𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐘𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐈𝐍 𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐈𝐃𝐄. Now i really think i was the wrong target for this book. But too late i already read it so here we go, half review half rant-ish.

]|I{•---------⋘⋙---------------•⪼⦕࿅⪻•---------------⋘⋙---------•}I|[
I know this might be confusing since I've said a thousand times over and over again that 𝐈 𝐃𝐎𝐍'𝐓 𝐃𝐎 𝐃𝐑𝐀𝐌𝐀 or unnecessary struggles and arguments for the sake of having them. So me having issues with this might be weird 𝐁𝐔𝐓 there is a 𝐃𝐈𝐅𝐅𝐄𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄 between intentionally looking to stir problems and 𝐍𝐎𝐓 reacting to sh*t happening. 𝐋𝐈𝐊𝐄 𝐀𝐓 𝐀𝐋𝐋. This dudette, i swear to god everytime she found out about some 𝐌𝐀𝐉𝐎𝐑 info like:
⚉ The fact that she had a target on her back.
⚉ Or that they didn't tell her.
⚉ Or that they've been following her since dinner night.
⚉ Or that these guys are actual killers.
⚉ Or that she was thrown into a wolf den without her knowledge.
⚉ Or when she found out that they were shifters and so on.
She was like "Oh! Okay i get it no problem.." 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐄 𝐎𝐍, 𝐍𝐎 𝐎𝐍𝐄 𝐈𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐍𝐎𝐍𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐓.

]|I{•---------⋘⋙---------------•⪼⦕࿅⦖⪻•---------------⋘⋙---------•}I|[
But then she choses the 𝐎𝐍𝐄 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐎𝐍𝐋𝐘 𝐆𝐎𝐃𝐃𝐀𝐌𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆 they had 𝐍𝐎 𝐅#𝐂𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 responsibility in, to react to and be mad at them for. Like 𝐖𝐓𝐅. Which btw is the fact that she's a She-Wolf.
Now after having her 𝐍𝐎𝐓 react to anything and taking it all as if she was a 𝐕𝐮𝐥𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐧 for like 75% of the book, it took us 3 looong freakin' chapters and 11 days of isolation for her to realize that 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐘 𝐃𝐈𝐃𝐍'𝐓 𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐔𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐘 make her into a shifter. And this situation they are 𝐀𝐋𝐋 in is not their fault. All of them were blindsided by that reveal and yet she didn't even give them a second thought as to what it meant for them to have been claimed.
Now 𝐈'𝐦 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 that yes she deserved to have as many chapters as she needed to accept and come to term with the fact that she's been a Supernatural Creature her whole life without knowing it (and a coveted and hunted one at that) and that her entire childhood traumas (caused by her mother) were rooted to that little fact. I can totally 𝐛𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐳𝐞 with her situation, but we only got 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐓 of her reflecting at the very last page of her misery chapters (that's what i'm calling them). Otherwise it was just a bunch of nonsensical ramblings. So no one can say i'm not being fair here.

]|I{•---------⋘⋙---------------•⪼⦕࿅⦖⪻•---------------⋘⋙---------•}I|[
Other than that i actually liked the characters, especially the twins being polar opposite. Kinda sad i didn't get my twin sandwich but i get it, Reid has his own damage and demons to deal with first. And we didn't get enough of Slade, i don't like when members of a RH don't get the same amount of time in. I'm not talking about them being physical but at least be more communicative. Let us get to know you too. Also i wasn't really a fan of the whole insta-love aspect here. It went from let's get to know her to we are in love with her. If this was a fated/bonded mates type of story then yeah fine but It wasn't so i don't really get how that 180 happened.
But I did love Emmy's Boss 𝐐𝐔𝐄𝐄𝐍 moment, she definitely earned it and i can't wait to see the rest unfold. So 3 stars rating despite my little ranting session. Yeah i know...

DNF @ 37%

I really wanted to like it but I just didn’t jive with it right from the get go. No world building, heroine states she has no friends BUT in the next sentence is the most outgoing and friendly person ever, no “mating pull”or even a build up to the Heros even liking her - just automatically they want to mate her, incoherent conversations, nonsensical conversations, and OTT unbelievable (shes some super coder who knows EVERYTHING but is working a dead end job as a secretary because that the best she could find)….I could go on and on but I just couldn’t handle the stupidity anymore

This was so much fun. Book hangover commencing in 3...2... wait. Thank goodness the sequel comes out soon! Rejected mates shifter stories are a favorite trope of mine, and this is a really good one.

Awesome characters and an interesting story.
It felt like all the important stuff was either no big deal to her or the explanations were rushed through/glossed over. I’m wondering if I missed a series that explained some of this background info because it seemed like I was already supposed to know things.

But… honestly, not bad at all. Will definitely recommend it in the future, I’m just not going to read on as it didn’t agree with me 100%.

Pack Promised is a well written storyl with complex characters. It is rich in storyline that kept me engaged from start to finish. The characters are likable, but damaged. The author left me wanting more.

It is always nice to get in on a new series just as they are beginning and this was an absolute treat. The characters and the world building were extraordinary, by the end of the book, you are so invested in them that when that cliff hanger hits you, it is almost like being clunked in the head, right between the eyes.
While it appears at first the story will be riveted around Emmeline (Emmy to her family) while she has the dubious task, er..sorry, Honor of choosing a mate, it is essentially her newfound "human" friend Sabrina and her brothers, yes all four of her big strapping brothers are drawn to Sabrina. Now the fireworks fly with everyone trying to protect Emmy and Sabrina from a man with no morals nor scruples. I was extremely impressed with how well rounded and thought out the characters were and the personalities of each of the men were very much swoon worthy, from Slade the Alpha, Boden the beta, Cinjin the extroverted twin to the quiet genius of Reid. I am so eager to see what book two has in store for us.

Sabrina was raised thinking she was a human with terrible luck. One fateful night she ends up with a new best friend and her gorgeous brothers. Things are not all the seem and many secrets and enemies are revealed. Great first book in this series.

Sabrina is our FMC in this new series and to say that she is a bit of a loner is an understatement. She thinks humanity is lost to humans, and that they are so wrapped up in themselves that they don't see anything that goes on around them. She is used to being on her own and doesn't trust anyone to come to her rescue. So when she hears a woman in trouble she jumps right in; Upon seeing the situation she takes charge and rushes in and saves Emmeline "Emmy" from an attack. The two become fast friends, Sabrina soon realizes that befriending Emmy was just what she needed. Soon Sabrina is brought into the fold which includes four smoking-hot brothers and a whole lot of mystery... will she be able to hold her own and completely join the family?

I loved J Kearson's previous works so when I saw this become available I jumped at the chance to read it! The characters are off the charts amazing, they are each individualistic, and have their own personality. The world-building is excellent- though we don't know where it is placed exactly, the details in the book make up the city in your mind and you can see it all so clearly. I love the wit and banter that Kearston always includes in her books and I can not wait to read the next one! A definite must-read in my opinion.

Sabrina is the FMC in this book. She grew up a loner because her mother moved from place to place (it's not very clear why... sounds a bit like she couldn't hold down a job? But actually, once we know a bit more about Sabrina's background in book 2, it's more likely to be paranoia as she was on the run... but the way Sabrina tells it, doesn't sound like her mother was paranoid or worried about someone finding them, so 🤷🏻‍♀️)

Anyway. Sabrina was trained to be self-sufficient, so she goes running before dawn, because she's just that kind of fearless female. She discovers another woman being attacked, and saves her, gets her sent home in a cab, etc.

The woman, Emily, later hunts her down to thank her and wants to be friends. Now, it's really weird how Emily's brothers seem to think that Sabrina must know who they are, just because they're rich. It's very intrusive that one of them would do a thorough background check on her just because he's fascinated with her. It's weird to print out all the things he finds out, rather than just sending it to his brothers by email.

So, Boden supposedly is interested in Sabrina the moment he sees her, but he acts standoffish and indifferent. Slade, the eldest and the alpha of the pack, acts distant and formal with her. She clicks the most with Reid over a background in IT/tech, and Cinjin is irreverent and devil-may-care. Those are the four MMCs we're dealing with.

The world-building is really lacking. To avoid any big spoilers, I'm only going to say that the night strengthens their "other" self, and that's the only time they can shift. Why? Who knows, it's never explained. And not all of them can shift, but those who can, can decide whether they want to or not--at night. There's no explanation of what being a wolf means apart from having enhanced hearing and accelerated healing. No mention about any stronger sense of smell or increased strength or stamina. No mention about fated mates, apparently you're free to choose whoever you want (as long as wolf politics don't interfere).

Emily's family, the Hawthornes, are also very secretive about what the "family business" is, and how they make their money. It later comes out but there's no details given like who gives them the jobs? How are they contacted? Who trained them? Where does their equipment come from? It's like Boden just says it and then we're supposed to believe it. And throughout this book and the half of book 2 that I've read, they've only had one job, so it seems they should be a lot poorer than they actually are, as their skills don't appear to be in demand.

I quite liked Sabrina at first. She's strong and sassy and won't take any nonsense from anyone. I like how she's direct and upfront about how she feels, and she doesn't bother about being judged for it. However, I didn't buy the portrayal of supposed loneliness. And for a person who grew up a loner and considers herself socially awkward, she didn't have awkward moments with the guys or seem to have any problems reading social cues, so what's up with that? I also didn't understand how she is a qualified dev or software programmer but her company made her a personal assistant to the boss instead of putting her in a software engineering role. It made no sense to me.

Can I also just say that I found it unbelievable she would agree to have sex during that party, which she knew was an important and significant party for Emmy. The whole reason why she went was to support Emmy, and then she goes off and has sex somewhere else in the host's house with Boden and Cinjin??? Her first time having sex with any of them, too. I thought it was in poor taste and rather tacky. Then she's too mortified to return to the party, so she runs out with Cinjin, completely forgetting about Emmy and also being totally rude to the party's host. Again, knowing that this was an important party to Emmy and that the outcome was going to have an impact on the rest of Emmy's life. What a shitty friend Sabrina was.

Then, when she finds out more about her background and her family, she closes off from the guys. Ostensibly it's to process, but mostly what she does is just focus on work as a distraction. Is she horrified about what she finds out, scared of what this means for her, angry with her mother, regretful for what she unknowingly did to the guys, what? We don't know. None of her reactions or emotions felt authentic in that moment. And again, here the world-building failed spectacularly because I expected her bond with the guys to have strengthened, but nothing changed.

I liked this book enough to go on to book 2, but I DNF book 2 at 50%. It's because of all the internal monologuing, which really slowed down the pace of the second book. There are a lot of internal monologues in this book, too, and some repetitiveness, but it gets way worse in book 2. Also, the world building doesn't get any better, and Emmy and her mates just fade out of the picture even though Emmy was a key character in book 1.

Thrown to the Wolves is book one in J. Kearston's new paranormal romance series and I ate this book right up. Sabrina saves a young woman she crosses paths with on the streets from a man who just wouldn't take "no" for an answer. Sabrina has no idea what she just got herself into with this selfless act of human decency. Piece by piece though she's going to find out as her new friend, along with her friend's brothers are about to pull her into their world.
Thrown to the Wolves is engaging, but has some minor flaws. I say minor because they are easy to overlook in the overall storyline because it's engaging. Sabrina has led a rough life, but (whether she fully acknowledges it or not) her mother did her best for her in teaching - be at no one's mercy. She's strong, but you also know she resents her mother for her upbringing, but it has served her well. She's going to need all of those skills as she's finding herself in the cross hairs of some dangerous beings.
I can't say much because that would reveal tons of spoilers, but Sabrina learns quite a bit about this family who have taken her under their wing. Their secrets are coming to light, and the question arises...will it become too much for her to handle?
This book is a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars. I can't wait for the next book. If you hate cliffhangers, the author warns of them in the blurb, so avoid this book/series until it's completed then grab them all up and binge read. LOL!

Sabrina lives a normal, boring life until one night she comes across a woman being assaulted by a man. Saving her, Sabrina makes a new friend in Emmy and now finds herself a new world that she could have expected...one that includes Emmy's brothers.

This book exceeded any expectations I had. It was everything the author advertised and more. Sabrina is a normal woman trying to make it in the world. She doesn't want hand outs and isn't out for money, which was so refreshing to read. She wasn't super strong and when she confronted the guy assaulting Emmy, she used mace and ran. That was 100% the most believable thing I've ever read in a fantasy book.

The men in the book are all very different and bring something unique to Sabrina's life. The book does end in a cliffhanger, and it made the anticipation for book 2 that much more intense!

Quick and Decent start to a new series

I liked this, the book just drops us right in and expects us to figure out what is going on. I enjoy Sabrina’s inner monologue and how levelheaded she is. I enjoy how she takes her time figuring things out. Mostly the book feels a bit surface level while also feeling not at the same time. I like the guys so far and I enjoyed getting to know them but what was not well explained is what the guys do, what exactly pack life is like what it entails and how mates are found or can everyone mate whoever, it’s not a fated thing?

Will we meet Sabrina’s mom? I suspect we will especially with that ending.

I have mixed feelings on this one. Part of me liked that Sabrina was so chill, but the other part of me wanted her to have SOME KIND of reaction. Her blasé attitude wasn't completely believable to me. When Sabrina DID finally throw a temper tantrum, it was at fate itself, and she lashed out at everyone around her. wth? It didn't make any sense. In other news, Emmy was a rockstar in her final announcement. I didn't see that coming, and it was greatness. The ending was a semi-cliffhanger with three guys approaching saying they were there for Sabrina. No reference or explanation. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I devoured this amazing introduction to Sabrina and the Thrown to the Wolves series in one sitting. It had me hooked by the end of the first chapter and then didn't let go. I loved the intrigue, danger, angst, pack politics, mystery and engaging storyline. It is very well written and has a great complexity and intensity. With the ending, there is definitely more excitement to come.

Epic read!

I can't believe how good this book was! So many twists and turns in the storyline, but it all works so well together! Sabrina is such a strong, powerful fmc, and Slade, Boden, Reid, and Cinjin are such alpha males. I can't wait for the next book because this cliffhanger is intense.

Sabrina has learned to rely on herself and that people aren’t to be trusted, but after she saves a girl who is being attacked, she is drawn to the girls brothers. I loved her blunt way of talking and I loved the friendship between Sabrina and Emmy. The guys are interesting, although I feel like we didn’t get to know Slade as much. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what happens next!

Cute, but too short to be great

Heroine is fine. I like that she's straightforward. Not sure I understand how she's an IT wiz but worked as a secretary? Her trauma/childhood is weirdly shoehorned in and doesn't fit much else

Guys are samey but cute
One smut scene and it's blah

The sister is the best character tbh

Not much world building. Them being werewolves is barely mentioned until maybe 1/3 into it. I honestly still kinda don't understand the mating-unlocking-your-wolf thing? It teeters on the "females are rare so men fight over them" trope but doesn't develop it well. Pack dynamics are barely introduced and poorly explained.

No typos or grammar issues that I noticed

But honestly, I still enjoyed it. Go into with tempered expectations, and you might like it, too

Now this was a pleasant surprise! A beautiful twist on a well-known trope. It excited me to turn the pages of this book, to the very last one. The characters are believable and the story compelling. Dive in if you want to get lost in a wonderful story that will leave you panting for the next installment.

I had homework I was supposed to finish today. Instead though, I spent my time reading this book. Idk why I kept going?? It didn't start out that well, but I still held out hope. Then maybe around the 25% mark, I lost all interest but read for the sake of it. My main problem with this book was the lack of conflict. In the first half, the characters did a lot of meandering around. There was a sad lack of conflict. And then to top it off, the love interests were all bland and dull. They were given bits of personality, sure, but they never had the opportunity to show it. They were too alike, and were often in the same setting. A skilled author probably still would've managed to get that characterization through even in a group setting, but this author unfortunately didn't deliver on that end of things. This might be my wake up call to stop burning through all the mass produced urban fantasy reads I come across and start reading more slow-paced, guaranteed to be good books. I'm not even mad about how bad this was, I'm just resigned to the fact that good urban fantasy books will come few and far between, and I might have to rifle through all the bad before I can get to any of the good. Which sucks, I kind of wish goodreads had a way of recommending me only books that I'd love for sure. Alas.

Three stars because it's valentine's day, but it was really teetering on a two a few minutes ago.
