Ex-Boogeyman

Rate this book
HE’S NOT FREDDY, HE’S NOT JASON…HE’S ALL WASHED UP.

As Nicky Hector—the unstoppable slasher from the Lunatic horror movie franchise—Jonathan Zain reached levels fame once unimaginable to a young actor. On top of headlining fifteen films, he appeared on MTV, had his own 976 number, and became one of the most recognizable faces of the 1980s.

But that was thirty years ago.

Now it’s 2010, and Zain is a has-been celebrity making his living signing autographs at fan conventions, a relic of the bygone slasher movie boom. He’s broke, separated from his wife and children, lives in a crummy apartment, and hasn’t landed a role in years.

When he learns the studio is remaking Lunatic, he thinks it’s his chance for a comeback. But Redmax Studios isn’t interested in resurrecting Zain’s fame. They want the reboot to have a new face, to escape the campiness that plagued the latter films in the Lunatic series. For the studio, this is a brand-new start.

For Jonathan Zain, it's the last straw.

Discovering the remake is being filmed at the same rafting center as the original, and his former “final girl” co-star Lola Lang is involved, Zain begins a descent into insanity. He slips into his old costume, sharpens his meat cleaver, and brings the Nicky Hector character back from the dead for one last bloodbath.

“Kristopher Triana’s latest is a chillingly convincing portrait of an aged horror icon driven to the brink of madness as he fights tooth and nail against an inexorable slide into irrelevance. Loaded with fun references to the glory days of the slasher genre, Ex-Boogeyman is a bloody and thrilling feast for horror fans.”

I have read a ton of Kristopher Triana’s books, and this was unlike any of the others. But that’s not a bad thing. When I first saw the 287-page runtime here, I rolled my eyes, especially after seeing the premise. However, Triana took a great deal of time developing his characters in meaningful ways, eventually intermingling them all. Whether it was John’s difficulties and transition back into Nicky, Rachel and Ellie’s sibling dynamics, Lola’s internal conflicts with her career, or any of the others, I enjoyed it all. I was born in 1985 and have never kept it a secret that this decade bred some of the best horror films of all time. So I marked out here, as Triana references a ton of older horror films, even Sam Neil in The Mouth of Madness (Yes, I know that was in the early 90s.). And he accomplished his goal of incorporating the fictional lore of The Lunatic among the other all time cinematic greats. The ending was solid, the pace was on point, and the writing demonstrated Triana’s range. Fans of horror will adore this, and already established fans of the author will take a little time to adjust to the different style, but will come around just as I did.

The ultimate final girl.

Jonathan Zain takes his job as the killer from the 'Lunatic' movie franchise VERY seriously. When he receives news that there is an upcoming "Reimagining" of the series that doesn't include him reprising his role as Nicky Hector, he decides to do some...reimagining of his own...

This is probably the best slasher since 'Kin' by Kealan Patrick Burke.

Ex-Boogeyman is Triana's 'Scream' - With ample nods to all the classic movies that have come and gone over the years, he takes the slasher genre and makes it his own, in this twisty -just campy enough- 80s splatterfest. It's darkly comedic, gory, and just plain meta-overload.

There's also plenty of sly digs at the travesty that is- the state of horror movies (movies in general in my opinion), and the endless, dull, formulaic, uninspired trash that Hollywood shits out on a yearly basis.

This was very entertaining, and one hell of a ride that I highly recommend taking!

If you are hyped for the upcoming release, Ex-Boogeyman, your hype is beyond justified. If you are not, then I don’t know what rock you live under but you better get ready. Triana’s new book, like all of his works, is a rollercoaster ride of terror and I friggin’ LOVED it. First of all, the concept is unique and for slasher fans, this story is meta-slasher goodness at its finest. Not only do we have a conflict built around a movie I wish we could actually see, Triana also flexes his horror movie knowledge so you get loads of trivia goodies. There are also a ton of easter eggs/nods sprinkled throughout for the true horror fanatic, which really adds that self-defined fangirl recognition we all want.

I love the characters in this book. I love the scenery and the progression of the story. It hits all the right notes and then hits us with a grand slam climax that delivers a gut-stabbing final blow. I’m excited for everyone to read this masterpiece and revel in its horrors!

If you’re looking for THE slasher book of all slasher books, this one’s for you! 🔪🩸

Jonathan Zain finds himself unable to get acting work after being the infamous slasher, Nicky Hector - star of the wildly popular Lunatic franchise, for so long. He's deep in debt, especially after rehab and being divorced, can barely pay the rent on his crummy apartment, his kids don't speak to him, and he relies on horror cons to make ends meet.
It's at one such convention, when a fan asks John and co-star, Lola Lang, aka Molly Harrison, what they are working on next. Not wanting to embarrass himself, knowing he has nothing in the works, Johnathan lies and says he is working on a horror piece, but can't say much yet. When the fan asks if it has to do "with the remake," Johnathan is thoroughly confused - especially when more fans chime in that they have been reading and hearing about that.
As the panel goes on, Johnathan's insult and anger grow - all the while trying to convince himself it's just a rumor - it has to be, after all, he's starred in every single Lunatic movie, all 15 of them. There's no way they can make a new movie without him... Absolutely no way.
"If Johnathan wasn't Nicky Hector, he was nobody. Just an ex-boogeyman."
After learning Lola is offered a part in the remake as well, he finds himself growing angrier still. How dare they do this to him? He made the series everything it is!
Johnathan decides to track down the actors, cast as the new Molly Harrison and Nicky Hector to talk with them about the movie, but he ends up losing it, and kills the two young actors.
"You're not fit to fill Lola's shoes. And you know what? You can't have a slasher without the final girl. No Molly Harrison, no remake."
Upon looking in the mirror afterwards, Johnathan is elated to see not his reflection, but that of his character, and old friend, Nicky, staring back at him. With Nicky's internal coaching, Johnathan manages to keep his cool in disposing of the bodies.
He does learn something valuable from his replacement though, and that's that the new director is out at Clear River Rafting center, scouting the location for the remake - the very same set as the first movie, and joining him there is Lola Lang, whom he brought on as creative consultant. Johnathan/Nicky gets it into his head that he must kill Molly/Lola, as that's the best way to truly end the franchise.
"We must kill Molly. The real Molly. Only her demise is a worthy finale of the Lunatic saga. Without the final girl, there can be no remake or retelling."
Johnathan puts his Nicky costume back on for one final time, even going so far as to mutilate himself so he has all the same injuries as he would in full makeup, effectively bringing Nicky out for good. And first on the agenda is Clear River, for his very own remake. But it's not just the new director and Lola out there, the rafting center is also hosting a number of guests, there to enjoy the summer. Will anyone be able to survive the wrath of Nicky?

I'm definitely not shocked by how much I loved this; Kristopher Triana is one of my favorite authors and could probably write an amazing novel about a garbage bag. This was really fun, really entertaining and definitely not easy to put down. I can't wait to read more from him!

Slasherific!!!!!!

I’m a sucker for a good slasher book or movie and this one did not disappoint! I loved this and the homages to the slasher movies from my teens. Its a pure splatter fest at times and its absolutely perfect for this time of year. If you love 80s slashers, then I definitely recommend this read!

I was really hoping to like this and quite honestly fully expected to as there isn’t anything by Triana I hadn’t enjoyed, up until now. The only reason I didn’t DNF is because I was hosting this for a group read for my Bookclub. This just didn’t do it for me for me at all, I found it to be a slog to get through as well. I think this would play out way better as a film than it did as a book.

I appreciate all the references and the 80/90s horror slasher vibe was fun. The character arcs were decent enough, I just didn’t feel a connection to anyone in the book which made it hard for me to care about. Not my favourite but in the same breath, Triana has written some of my all time favourite reads. Not everything will be a winner I guess!

Clever meta-slasher comedy is smart but the quality of writing is a little rough. Jonathan Zain is a former 80s/90s horror actor, whose character Nicky Hector was up there with Freddy Kreuger and Jason. But when the 15-movie series turned self-parody when the boogeyman turned Hawaiian and went to space, it seemed like Nicky Hector was done. The horror franchise he was in is talked about a lot throughout the book and has a satirical slasher lore that makes the character, like Jason Voorhees himself, the butt of the joke. When the actor who plays the killer discovers they're scouting to film a remake at the rafting center where the original was filmed, he goes berserk and becomes the brutal monster he always was. Full of meta-horror jokes, frequent references to real and imaginary movies, and quippy one-liners. But when the actual slashing begins, it throws in some clever twists and gets surprisingly scary. Slasher villain Nicky Hector, as played by Jonathan Zain, is a dark character contrasting with the goofy tone. Shows a lot of love for the genre but gets bogged down in repetitive writing and an awkward structure. The whole first half of the book feels padded out before they get to the center but it turns into a big 80s horror set piece in the second. Nice horror fandom comedy, a pretty decent slasher.

Kristopher Triana has penned a great love letter to the slasher genre with Ex Boogeyman. Between the story concept and the nods to 80s slasher, this story is a must read for slasher fans. The audio by Chuck Brugee is very well done, especially the radio spots at the end.

This has to be ,by far, my favorite Kristopher Triana book! As much as I love his other work, there's just something about the heaping of eighties and nineties nostalgia that you get smothered in with this book. It's such a great take on the slasher films that we all grew up with.

An 80s slasher icon is living a hard life since being kicked off the Island of Relevancy in the 21st century. His wife and kids left him, he hasn't had any auditions, and he's been reduced to appearing at horror cons in order to make a living. Then he hears that the horror franchise he started in was being remade without him. This kinda makes him a little angry..,..

Jonathan Zane aka Nicky Hector was the star of Lunatic. A popular slasher movie that first came out in the 80s. After a couple of years, the movies fell flat. 30 years later, the star became...well, old. When Jonathan heard about a remake of Lunatic and he wasn't going to star, he snapped.

There were a couple different POVs throughout the book and they all came together for the ending. This is an 80s slasher movie lovers dream! So many movie references. There was humor, the slashes were good once we got to them.
The book was fun and well written, I just wanted a lot more violence and gore.

If you're a horror movie lover then you're gunna love this!

This book is fantastic. An homage to slasher horror, and the absolute best one of its ilk I’ve read in years. Triana brings his knowledge, and his signature splatter to the pages and creates Nicky Hector, the Ex-Boogeyman who isn’t ready to throw in the towel. This book was a thrill ride of blood and gore. Thoroughly enjoyed this read

Triana has done it again..!

Not only has he brought me out of a reading slump, but also taken one of my favourite genres (the slashers) and made it better (and meta). No supernatural stuff, just amazing characters, bloody settings and even bloodier kills. LOVED it!

THIS BOOK IS SO SCARY! Fans of slasher movies take note! This is the BEST and most twisted tribute to old glory days of Freddy and Jason that you could ask for. It's a story of washed-up actor John Zain, a former slasher movie icon. Now, years after his fame, the studio is remaking his film LUNATIC...without him. It's the last straw!

Triana's character's are always rich and layered. I really enjoyed the evil descent of John/Nicky, and the well-developed cast of heroes, including LUNATIC's original final girl Lola and a pair of young sisters in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Another horror classic from the modern master!

Jonathan Zain is known for his role as the iconic slasher Nicky Hector from the “Lunatic” film franchise in the 1980s. Thirty years later, Redmax Studios is rebooting the Lunatic films and recasting his role. With his legacy on the line, Zain doesn’t take the news lightly and the Nicky Hector in him slowly begins to cross over from the screen and into a real life killer creating a murderous reality…

This book is a must read for slasher heads. It pays homage to the great horror films of the 1980s by featuring a deranged killer stalking teens, cheesy puns, nudity and heavy doses of blood and gore. But the best part about it was the engaging storyline and shifting POVs from two sisters staying at a Rafting Center to watching Zain snap and turning into a real life movie villain. All the characters were wonderfully written and the careful build towards a cat-and-mouse game was well crafted with a proper amount of suspense. There’s also fun twists and a cinematic showdown with a final girl that genre lovers will absolutely dig.

Overall, I had a really fun time with this novel and loved the many references to some of my favorite horror films of all time. This is only my second book by the author but he’s quickly becoming a new favorite! I highly recommend checking out Ex-Boogeyman if you’re a huge fan of the horror genre, you wont be disappointed.

My first time reading from Kristopher Triana, and definitely not the last.

It's a slasher story for people who don't care for slashers (it's me, I'm people); the author should do a seminar on 'show, don't tell' because he's a master of it. He made me care about the characters before delivering the gnarly kills. He questioned the classic slasher tropes WHILE making them happen, because what's a slasher without the Final Girl, the 'I think I killed him!', the T&A, the corny one liners, etc? You can't NOT deliver on that front either.

The book is pretty much a cleverly written love letter to classic horror movies, esp. slashers obviously. The characters all have different views on the legacy of them instead of just them all parroting whatever the author thinks (ahem, Grady Hendrix in We Sold Our Souls, I'm looking at you, though that one is about music), from the people who think they're outdated and should be reimagined into something else, to the people who think they're an iconic piece of media that stands on its own just fine, to.... one other thing. You'll see.

Honestly, the book is just fun. The characters are interesting. It's fast paced. The kills are cool, the suspense is off the charts, it actually tackled a few issues I wasn't expecting (like 'no means no'). I really enjoyed it.

A has been actor finds out his horror movies are being remade and he is not included, but he's the star. how dare they not include him. He's the reason the movies are what they are. He snaps, bringing the killer from the movies to life. full of nostalgic horror movie vibes and gory carnage.

Ex-boogyman is not as disturbing as some of his other works, a great place to start if you want read some of his books and aren't sure where to start or whether the content is too dark for you. I really enjoyed this book, if you're a fan of slasher movies then I think you would too.

One of my favorite things is reading horror books, and Ex-Boogeyman really checked all the boxes for a great horror read. Jonathan Zain has played Nicky Hector, the killer in numerous Lunatic movies, and has now been hitting the convention circuit. When a remake/reboot is announced, and Jonathan isn't asked to be part of it, he breaks, and decides to head to the shooting location to make his stand.
You can tell that Kristopher Triana really loves horror. I enjoyed his writing style, and he really nailed the 80's slasher vibe. Full of all the terror and horror you could ever want.

Think Friday The 13th and Halloween, this book is a nod to some of the best slashers from the 80's and 90's.
The concept is familiar but still a unique one. A movie built into a book. All hell breaks loose and so does a killer. So will there be a final girl?

I loved all the characters in this book, even the annoying ones. The scenery was perfection for a slasher. The tension built toward the ending of this story had my heart palpitating. A perfect book to read a night by the camp fire!!

I can't recommend Ex-Boogeyman enough!

As a child of the '80s, I have a soft spot for slasher movies - bring on Jason and Freddy and Michael. That love has also turned into a love of slasher novels and "Ex-Boogeyman," is the best one I've ever read. The main killer is amazing and the plot is fantastic. This would make a great movie.
