Gareth first started writing when he was very young but it wasn’t until he was in his early twenties that he completed his first novel. Having had it universally rejected he wrote a novel for children called Who Killed Charlie Twig, which received an equally unimpressed reception and remains rightly unpublished to this day.

Some years passed during which Gareth met his future wife, Lisa and began a career in TV, working on shows such as The Big Breakfast and Richard & Judy. Then one day he found himself having lunch at the offices of Bloomsbury. He mentioned the unpublished book to a nice lady called Sarah, who politely suggested that he should send in the first three chapters for her to look at (and most likely dismiss, she thought to herself). Gareth returned home and excitedly told his wife this news, who gently explained that the book he had written actually wasn’t very good, but reminded him that he had recently begun work on a much better idea. This turned out to be good advice. In 2007 Bloomsbury published the first of four books in the series The Dragon Detective Agency and have since published The Thornthwaite Inheritance, Space Crime Conspiracy and The Considine Curse. He has also written a shorter story, Perry’s 5, published by Barrington Stoke and a series of books called Ninja Meerkats, published by Stripes.

Gareth now divides his time between writing books, producing TV programmes, spending time with his wife and son, Herbie and playing the slightly ludicrous number of stringed instruments in his front room.

NOMINATIONS & AWARDS

The Dragon Detective Agency: The Case of the Missing Cats was shortlisted for the Waterstone’s Book Prize.
The Thornthwaite Inheritance was shortlisted for eleven local book awards and won seven of them.
The Considine Curse was voted Blue Peter Book of the Year 2012.

This was a delightful childishly morbid book about two twins constantly trying to kill each other. Was so fun to read and oddly atmospheric, feelt a bit gothic.

When I first saw this book, I thought it would be a good one, but I didn't expect it to be the GREAT one.

Lorelli and Ovid was twins, and was attempted to kill each other since no one could remember.

Every character seemed so real to me.

Lorelli and Ovid might be twins, but they were different,
Lorelli had never been in love or had any friend before in her life, so she was ready to believe in anyone who was good to her, Ovid, on the other hand, was never trust anyone, he had been alone for so long that he never trust anyone else.
Ironicly, the only person Lorelli didn't seem to trust was her own twin brother.

This story was a perfect combination of a humor and dryama, every character has their own issues and reasons.

Story- 9/10

Ovid and Lorelli Thornthwaite are the twins who inherit their family's vast property after their parents' gruesome death. As known by everyone, the history of the family mingles with cruelty, betrayal and murders. Probably because of the blood, the twins have been trying to kill each other for so long that neither twin can remember which act of attempted murder came first. Now on their 13th birthday, Ovid suddenly proposes that they should form a truce and stop trying to kill each-other for a while. Though doubtful at first, Lorelli accepts and the twins decide to create a new will which will confirm that neither of the twins will receive any property if another dies before the age of sixteen. Now that everything is set and the twins are on the same side, someone close to them strikes back. After waiting for the property for so long, he won't let it go that easily. Hence, starts the manifestation of the clever plot built against the twins and the twins must stay together and solve the mystery of their parents' death.

The novel is just epic! It's probably written for young readers on mind, but it can be enjoyed by anyone regardless of age. The plot, the narrative, even the characters are portrayed in such a way that the novel seems like a complete package for anyone. What started as a mere hint of endless fights and funny adventures of the twins, becomes entirely something else. As the story unfolds, the readers will be able to go along the lines and try to figure out the main culprit. When I chose the book for reading, I definitely didn't have a mystery genre on mind but this novel delivered it cleverly. Overall, a fantastic book to look up to for a light but enjoyable reading.

I'm between 3 and 4 stars for this one.
I really liked the kookiness of the book with the twins trying to murder each other, which was funny. However, it didn't make sense that siblings who were accustomed to death would he so worried about their lives when they went to the village.
I also didn't enjoy the villainous monologue at the end and how all the characters just appeared from nowhere for the final scenes. This happened often through the book, very Deus Ex Machina. I think another edit of the book could have heightened those scenes and made them more plausible.
If those things had been tweaked, I think this really could have been a 5 star book, but sadly slightly missed the mark compared to The Westing Game, Down the Rabbit Hole or A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Crime fiction is one of the most popular adult genres, the more macabre the better, and so I predict that The Thornthwaite Inheritance will be very popular indeed with children.

The plot is both simple and devilishly complex. Thirteen year old twins Ovid and Lorelli Thornthwaite are very rich orphans. They live in an 87–room stately home under the care of the family retainer Alfred Crutcher and Nurse Gribble, with Mrs Bagshaw the cook below stairs and Tom
Paine the gardener outdoors. They don’t go to school or have any contact with the outside world, to protect them from danger, says Mr Crutcher, but the danger lies within – because throughout their
childhood the twins have been trying to kill each other in order to become sole heir to the family fortune. Their efforts are deliciously creative, ranging from exploding ice lollies to a stage prop
guillotine, flesh–eating piranhas in the bath and a booby-trapped bed. Every child with an annoying sibling’s fantasy! Even when the twins form a truce, however, the attempts on their lives go on – so is
one of them betraying their pact, or is someone else trying to kill them?

Twins Ovid and Lorelli have tried to kill each other since they can remember. They have no idea of how it started, and have no intention of stopping. Until their thirteenth birthday when Ovid proposes a truce. They agree and shake hands, but the chillings murder attempts continue. First, the siblings accuse each other, but when both of them are proved innocent, they must find out who would want to kill them.

I loved this book. Its been my favorite since third grade, and I still love it. I love the plot, the characters and the plot twists. Even if it's not really my level of reading anymore, the book is still amazing. It's the type of book you can read over and over again, without getting tired of it.

If you love the Addams family then you’ll love this.
It reads like a comfort “halloween” film, you know those ones you always come back to every year (Addams family, hocus pocus, the witches). It’s shocking that this hasn’t been turned into a series/film of some sort, it’s so good?!
A well thought out mystery, sibling rivalry and countless schemes and plots in a “deathly” comical way. There’s so much packed into this that I could spend all day talking about all of the things I love about it.
This was so on brand for autumn/fall and I can’t wait to read the next one.

“Lorelli and Ovid Thornthwaite had been trying to kill each other for so long that neither twin could remember which act of murder came first. Was it Lorelli’s cunning scheme to put on a play about the French Revolution, casting Ovid in the role of an aristocrat to be executed using a working guillotine? Or could it have been that long hot summer when Ovid managed to produce an iced lolly containing a small but deadly explosive, triggered by the surrounding ice reaching melting point? Whoever had struck first, trying to take each other’s life was now simply something the Thornthwaite twins did …”

Unusual? Certainly, but you have to bear in mind that Lorelli and Ovid had a rather unusual upbringing.

They grew up in an isolated 87 room mansion and, after their father and mother died, in rapid succession and in strange and little explained circumstances, they were brought up by the butler, the housekeeper, the cook and the gardener, with the estate that they inherited held in trust until they came of age.

The didn’t go to school, they didn’t even leave the grounds because, the butler explained, there were terrible dangers lurking.

That was why the household continued in mourning, wearing black, eating bland food, and even disconnecting the telephone and selling the television so that the outside word could not intrude.

Was it any wonder then, that the duo concocted dangers for themselves at home?

Eventually though they decided that enough was enough, and the family solicitor was summoned to ensure that the peace treaty was legal and binding. He arrived, accompanied by his young son, the deal was sealed, and yet the murder attempts continued.

A rampaging bear, an exploding piano, a killer bee hive …

The twins investigated, sometimes together and sometimes, when one believed the other to be responsible, apart.

They uncovered an extraordinarily complex plot: it involved a horribly overdue library book, a swiftly scored piece of music, an exploding piano …

At first progress was a little slow, and I wondered if I should be reading this children’s book, but soon things took off and I was hooked.

The plotting was so clever: it twisted and turned in fine style, and the author make excellent use of every character, every plot device that he introduced. That meant that there was plenty going on, and luckily it was well mixed and balanced and no problem to follow.

And there was much more here than mystery: it was lovely to watch Lorelli and Ovid on a voyage of discovery as they began to explore the world beyond their home and its grounds.

Eventually, of course, there was a grand denouement. Much was revealed, and quite a few fingers were pointed in wrong directions, before the final truth was revealed and justice was finally done.

The Thornthwaite Inheritance is a fine, witty, intelligent, gothic mystery.

Wonderful and unbelievable fun for all ages!

One of the most entertaining books I've read so far. Jones keeps you guessing all the way through: 'Who's behind the murders?', 'Who's next?', the questions go on. It's a story of mystery and murder, but with added humour. The plot can get a little frustrating at times - for example, I thought Adam was a total sweetheart to begin with, but then he turned into a douche - but the progression throughout is definitely worth it. The one character that I really liked was Tom the gardener. He was the only character that I instinctively thought the twins could trust. The front cover sums up the book and its humour really well and I think it's what attracted me to it in the first place. I know they say "never judge a book by its cover" but in this case, I think the judgement served me well.

I highly recommend this book to boys and girls aged 13-16 (although I'm 17). It's a fantastic read.

First reading: I'm not entirely sure I know who killed whom and who was innocent by by the end... Definitely entertaining, though.

Second reading: Apparently I thought Ovid was a little creep the first time, but this time I liked him a lot more than Adam. And I wrote down dot-points of all the murders so I could keep track. I love the tone of this book. I want to read the sequel now.

(Though I am confused as to how Mycroft Thornthwaite managed to die in April 1996 and then go on his honeymoon in October 1996. Why did the editors not catch that?)

maaaan what a shame... this was gonna be a solid 4 stars up until the last 80 odd pages - the supposed climax of the whole story was written in such a clunky way; there's a part where practically the entire cast of characters emerges from the shadows one by one to admit to their role in the mystery and it was just so silly and ridiculous, i just couldn't take any of it seriously. i feel like jones was trying too hard to create this elaborate mystery and ended up taking on more than he could handle, which is a pity because i really loved the first half and the relationship between ovid and lorelli.

This book was my WHOLE CHILDHOOD OH MY GOD I haven’t reread this in YEARS but I remembered every single WORD of it and I still love it so much. It’s the quintessential mystery book that is exactly what I refer to when I say yeh I like murder mysteries. Genuinely this book has had a huge impact on me I read it religiously when I was 11 and it’s just the weirdest darkest most fascinating and yet childlike story very easy to read. It’s so so good.

But there is ONE THING that bothers me deeply. Why is he referred as Mr Crutcher in the narration but the kids always call him Alfred in the dialogue????? Why?????? I don’t get that????? Also I LOVED the whole thing with music I truly thought that was The Coolest thing as a kid and still horrifyingly haunting but so good. I would say I recommend this book but I have no idea if it’s the extreme nostalgia I get from loving this as a kid that distorts my opinion of how good it is that is making me recommend it more so than the actual book itself. But regardless I would say to anyone to read this. Sosososososososodoodosgood I’m about to to read the SEQUEL!!!!! Because I just discovered there is a SEQUEL TO THIS BOOK and I’m gonna go make my 11yo self very happy ok go read this book that’s it bye

I remember trying to read this book once years before, but I couldn't get into it at that time. I tried again and found it pretty easy to read. The characters are interesting and weird. There is a pretty good supporting cast as well. The ending isn't entirely surprising, but there are some twists and turns in it that are unpredictable. There is a little too much villain monologu-ing at the end, though. All in all, an interesting read.

What a fun mystery novel for middle grades! Fans of Lemony Snicket would love this (less depressing, though) tale of two wealthy siblings whose parents were killed in a way that is surrounded by mystery. All the twists and turns were delightful, and I can’t wait to recommend this book!

When I saw this I immediately thought of A Series Of Unfortunate Events and The Addams Family, which I both loved as a kid - and still do! So I HAD to read this.

Since it is a kid's book it's super easy to read and has very short chapters, and tons of cliffhangers that would make children go crazy.

Lorelli and Ovid Thornthwaite are 13 year old orphan twins who live in their old mansion with their servants, secluded from everyone else. Their entire lives they've tried to kill each other with creative plots, but on their 13th birthday they decide to have a truce. But the murder attempts still continue...

There are so many twists and turns, especially towards the end, which maybe a little too much for children to keep up with.
But one thing that bothered me at the end which made me turn back to the beginning and check; It was said that the phone call that killed their mother was made by a man calling his wife to warn her about the storm, and that he didn't know the Thornthwaites at all - but that wasn't true when everything was revealed at the end.

I will definitely read the next book in the series! I would definitely recommend this for spooky kids, from about 10 and up.

Loved it when I first read it as a 10 year old. I decided to read it again at 17 and although the writing style is aimed at younger readers, not late teens, I still appreciate the clever plotting as I did 7 years ago.
