'999 / 911' - what's your emergency? Is the opening for this book.

Me…. ‘999 / 911' My heart can't take this adrenaline rush and nerve wreaking story. Ok, I'm hooked on Eddie Flynn, an addict for Steve Cavanagh’s writing, and I have adored this book 'Fifty Fifty'!!!. I'm having palpations.😀

Operator… ‘999 / 911' Your craving will be satisfed. There are more books in the series. No need for treatment this is a normal reaction.

Gritty, immersive, and oh so clever. A psychological roller coaster of a story with twists and turns that has you guessing to the end and constantly questioning and reassessing which sister killed their father and possibly their mother, an accident which is now in question. As new evidence is presented, more of the backstory is revealed, along with new murders in the present that heighten the tension in the story to the last word.

The Book starts with a destressed call

'911 what's your emergency?'

'My dad's dead. My sister Sofia killed him. She's still in the house. Please send help.'

'My dad's dead. My sister Alexandra killed him. She's still in the house. Please send help.'

Two defence teams go head-to-head against each other and against the prosecution who don’t care whether both did it, or either one murdered Frank Avellino, because any of these scenarios give them the assured conviction of someone for the grotesque murder. Case closed for them.

The motive is clear Frank Avellino is a multi millionaire and was about to change his will to cut one out - but which one. Both girls were rejected by their father after the accidental death of his second wife (which is now in question!!!) and sent off to boarding school with little contact from him during holiday periods. His first wife, a cold and aloof woman, demanded excellence of her daughters, in the game of chess in particular. Far from being the loving mother her punishment was to bite her daughters for making the wrong chess moves. So, you can see why both or one suffers mentally from the relationship with both parents which leads to unimaginable hatred and psychological damage.

However, one is also evil (referred to a 'she' in the book), a daughter who murdered her mother, her stepmother and then her father. Which one, it’s a fifty fifty decision.

Review and Comments

This is probably my favourite Steve Cavanagh book to date. Maybe, then again, I also loved The Defense, The Plea and Thirteen.

I can’t say anything about the twists because it would be easy to spoil this for other readers who haven’t delighted in this book already. Good sister versus’s evil sister.

However, this was a cracking suspense thriller that kept me hooked, absorbed, and totally captivated and my favourite kind of thriller. I loved the intelligent way in which Flynn contests, and sometimes destroys the evidence and the so-called expert witnesses. I love his humour and witty retorts.

The characters are deliciously evil, well developed, cunning, and clever. The book alternates between the various characters narrating. Eddie (Defence), Kate(2nd Defence), Sofia (accused), Alexandra (accused) and ‘she’ the evil, disturbed and calculated woman who shows no remorse for the numerous murders she has and will commit during this exhilarating story. The stakes are high – it can only be one of two – its fifty fifty.

Storyline and Plot ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Brilliantly devised and executed plot.

Main Characters ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Eddie is my favourite book lawyer. Love the dark humour, understated intelligence and acute mind that spots everything.

Writing ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ clever, easy to read, captivating, and suspenseful. A fantastic crime author.

Yes, I admit to loving this one. I can’t get enough of Eddie Flynn, and I can’t get enough of Steve Cavanagh’s psychological thrillers. Most are 5 star reads, and this one is no exception.

Well, I spent most of this read with my eyes out on stalks and my mouth opening and closing like window blinds. It’s a look, possibly not attractive. Eddie Flynn’s heart sinks. The jury in his latest trial defending Sofia Avellino has only taken 48 minutes to deliberate. It’s not long enough. Sofia is jointly charged with her sister Alexandra with the brutal murder of their father, ex NYC Mayor, Frank Avellino. Both sisters made separate dramatic 911 calls on the night of the murder blaming the other but which one is telling the truth? This explosive thriller is told principally by Eddie, ‘She’ who is one of the sisters who is an absolute monster and by Kate Brooks who defends Alexandra.

This is one of the most gripping court room drama investigations I’ve read in a long time. It’s slick, fast paced, exciting, tense and extremely twisty. It’s well written and keeps you on the edge of your seat in anticipation of the next jaw dropper. Some of the courtroom scenes are fantastic and you feel like you have a ringside seat as the experts are cross examined, you observe the sisters behaviour, see what the judge will do and what the antics of the prosecution lawyer will be. When the verdict comes in you almost hold your breath! I love the characters especially Eddie and Kate is in the same mould as she won’t defend if it means the guilty go free. There are a couple of deeply unpleasant characters but I’m delighted to say one of those gets entirely the justice they deserve.

Overall, absolutely brilliant - I was all in from beginning to end. Highly recommended.

Many thanks to NetGalley and especially Orion for the ARC.

Steve Cavanagh gives us another fabulous addition to his great legal thriller series, set in New York City, featuring Eddie Flynn, ex-con man now lawyer, discovering the two share a remarkable similarity. It begins with Eddie awaiting the verdict on his latest court trial, he learns the jury have finished their deliberations after having been out for 48 minutes. The one thing that Eddie knows is that you cannot come to a fair and balanced verdict in this, the most complex of cases, in New York's history, it just isn't possible. Usually Eddie is clear as to the upcoming verdicts in his cases, but this one has him floundering, he just can't call it, it could go either way, it is fifty-fifty as to which sister the jury finds guilty.

The story then goes back in time to the beginning, when the city's emergency services receive two 911 calls in quick succession from estranged sisters, Alexandra and Sofia Avellino, at the home of their murdered father, Frank, the ex-NYC mayor, stabbed 53 times, with each sister accusing the other of the heinous crime. Eddie, who never takes on a client he believes is guilty, represents Sofia, knowing she is likely to be seen as the more guilty in the joint trial with her history of mental health problems in comparison with the more successful, and confident Alexandra. Kate Brooks is representing Alexandra in her first case since leaving Levy, Bernard and Groff after her traumatic experiences at the firm. Just like Eddie, Kate has a conscience, but she is just as convinced that Alexandra is innocent, and she will do everything in her power to ensure that she is found not guilty. One of the sisters is truly monstrous, having cold bloodedly planned to ensure she inherits Frank's $49 million dollar estate by ensuring her sister is found guilty of the murder, she is as guilty as sin, having spent a life time keeping her evil nature hidden, that rare beast, a prolific female serial killer, but is it Alexandra or Sofia?

This tense, riveting thriller is related from the perspectives of Eddie and the other major players, including the murderous sister represented in the guise of she, with the reader left reeling and oscillating from one to the other of the sisters as the twists come thick and fast. For Eddie, once again tragedy strikes as he experiences an unbearable loss as a consequence of what he does. Cavanagh introduces Kate, another lawyer in the mould of Eddie, along with her remarkable life long friend and private investigator, Melissa Bloch, both women destined to return in future installments of this series. This is a hugely entertaining and compulsive addition to this wonderful series, although there were occasions when I felt Cavanagh overplayed his hand in the plotting with a little too much of a heavy touch. Many thanks to Orion for an ARC.

“Reading clients and reading juries was my bag. This case wasn’t normal. There was nothing remotely normal about it.”

Two frantic 911 calls - one each made by Alexandra Avellino and Sofia Avellino reporting the gruesome murder of their father, millionaire and former New York City Mayor Frank Avellino. Two sisters, each of whom are blaming the other for the murder of their father. Who did it? Who is telling the truth? Is one of them truly guilty or are they both? The sisters’ relationship has been strained for years and each of them stands to gain if the other is found guilty. It has been heard that their late father was planning to make changes in his will- changes that would result in one of the siblings losing their share of a sizeable inheritance. Was it greed that motivated the killer or was it more than that?

Eddie Flynn, Sofia’s defense attorney has his work cut out for him. With both sisters on trial, each with a fifty-fifty chance of being guilty, it is up to Eddie assisted by former FBI Agent turned PI Harper and his mentor recently retired Judge Harry Ford to prove Sofia’s innocence.

“Before I was a lawyer, I had a life on the other side of the law. Sometimes I had to step back over that line.”

The narrative is shared from three perspectives – our conman turned lawyer, Eddie Flynn, defense attorney Kate Brooks who is representing Alexandra with the firm belief that Alexandra is innocent and the killer “She” who seems to be a step ahead of everyone, eliminating anything and anyone who might prove to be a threat to her. Frank is not her first victim and won’t be her last. Both Eddie and Kate believe that their respective client is innocent but as the narrative progresses and crucial witnesses begin to disappear and/or are killed, it becomes evident that one of them is being played. Will Eddie be able to figure out the truth behind Frank Avellino’s death or will the killer be successful in conning the former conman?

Steve Cavanagh’s Fifty-Fifty is a gripping legal thriller that had me hooked from the very first page. Though there are plenty of breadcrumbs strewn throughout the narrative, the twists and turns and red herrings kept me guessing and doubting my theories till the very end. Tension-filled and intricately plotted this page-turner is truly unputdownable. This series just keeps getting better and better. I can’t wait to read the next book featuring Eddie Flynn!

courtroom drama is the best kind of drama and thats a fact.

and what do you get when two sisters, arrested for the same murder, blame each other? you get drama. lots and lots of entertainingly suspenseful drama. and SC truly has a gift at transporting the reader directly into that courtroom. i will tell you what - i was split 50/50 right until the very end. the story narrative is structured in a very clever and secretive way, i had no idea which sister truly did it.

im not quite sure i enjoyed the addition of a second lawyer POV. i mean, i understand the necessity of it, but it definitely took page time away from my man, flynn. i feel like he doesnt get to shine as much as he does in previous books. the story doesnt suffer because of this, its just a personal opinion/preference.

also, i love that this can be read as a standalone. so anyone out there who feels intimidated (or lazy, if youre like me. lol) by the #5 but thinks the synopsis sounds interesting, then go ahead and pick this up. you will still get a full and rewarding reading experience!

Eddie Flynn is a lawyer, who used to be a Con Artist, so reading clients and reading juries was his thing. But, for the first time, he was waiting on a verdict he couldn’t call. In his mind, the way the case played out seemed to be an even split.

It could even come down to a coin toss-a Fifty-Fifty.

Three months earlier, two separate 911 calls had been received, a minute apart. Two sisters, Alexandra and Sophia, each calling for help and accusing the other of killing their Dad and fearing that they could be next.

Their father viciously stabbed, and then BITTEN. You could say that one daughter has a TASTE for murder…

But, which one is telling the truth?

Two lawyers, who each believe that they are the one defending the INNOCENT sister. At the moment, the jury likes what they are hearing from Alexandra’s lawyer, Kate, and Eddie knows that whoever tells the BEST story wins…

So his version of it, has got to be BETTER-if he is going to get Sophia acquitted.

The story is divided into Five Parts, and is a bit more complex than past installments, as it unfolds from the alternating perspectives of Eddie, Kate, and SHE (the guilty sister)…with an occasional chapter from the newly retired, Judge Harry, as well.

Steve Cavanagh has sure come a long way as an author since his first book-and this just may be the BEST one in the series to date!

In fact, PART FOUR, called “The Dark Red Night” is one of the most suspenseful, eleven pages, that I have ever read in a book! I was on the edge of my seat, and literally NERVOUS for the characters in the book! 🫣

Part 5 is the trial-and, as always my favorite part in the Eddie Flynn books-as I love seeing how Eddie will outwit and outplay his opponents!

To say any more would be a spoiler, so I will just tell you that I highly recommend these books if you enjoy legal thrillers, and I am already looking forward to reading the next one in the series, “The Devil’s Advocate” with the group that I am reading this with!

Be sure to check out the reviews of Ceecee, DeAnn, MarilynW and Pat, to find out if they are as enamored with the Eddie Flynn books as I am! 😉

I purchased a copy through The Book Depository, which ships to the US for free and is a great place to find many titles not yet available here!

In the Eddie Flynn novels, we follow our MMC Eddie who is a former con man turned lawyer - turns out the two aren't so different. He's our main protagonist in this series and with each installment we handle a new case.

These do not need to be read in any order - lord knows I haven't but will only give you a more well rounded experience if you do. You get to know Eddie and his associates better by reading in order but again not required.

╰┈➤‎‧₊˚✧[ 𝓠𝓾𝓲𝓬𝓴 𝓢𝓾𝓶𝓶𝓪𝓻𝔂 ]✧˚₊‧

In Fifty-Fifty, Eddie finds himself embroiled in a high profile, complex murder case when two sisters accuse each other of the brutal murder of their father, former NYC Mayor Frankie Avellino. The evidence suggests either, or both, could be guilty.

Eddie is convinced that his client, Sofia Avellino, is innocent...One woman is lying. One woman is a murderer. But which one?

╰┈➤‎‧₊˚✧[ 𝓜𝔂 𝓣𝓱𝓸𝓾𝓰𝓱𝓽𝓼 ]✧˚₊‧

I absolutely love the character of Eddie Flynn! Eddie’s personality brings a little light humor to the otherwise serious and dark situations that he finds himself in. He’s sarcastic, funny, isn’t afraid to speak his mind, and will stand by anyone who he believes is being wronged.

Where a lot of lawyers only care about getting a win, Eddie genuinely cares about getting justice. He’s not your typical lawyer, and that is why this series of books is so enjoyable.

I also really enjoyed Kate’s character, who is new to the series. Initially, I felt sorry for her, and also a little frustrated that she was clearly holding back her real fighting spirit. But the way she got her own back, and then really stepped up was exactly what I wanted to see, and I was cheering for her the whole way through.

˚ ༘✶ ⋆。˚ ⁀➷ I love when thrillers have multiple POV, and in Fifty Fifty you see situations play out through the eyes and minds of quite a few different characters, but I particularly enjoyed that there were chapters from the murderer’s POV, without giving away the identity.

But I have to be honest here – despite the cleverly hidden clues and the misdirection that the author uses liberally throughout the book, I did make my mind up as to who the killer was quite early on, and I was, in the end, proven right.

˚ ༘✶ ⋆。˚ ⁀➷ But that is the beauty of this book – it constantly encourages you to try and work out who the guilty party really is, whilst also working hard to make you second guess your own logic. Is it as obvious as it seems or an elaborate double bluff. Or is the double bluff a double bluff too? The back and forth between the two suspects, the challenge against the seemingly overwhelming evidence.

Watching first Kate and then Eddie try to make mincemeat of the prosecution’s expert witnesses is a thing of beauty, thoroughly entertaining and at times the book is worth reading for that alone. Cast iron evidence? There’s no such thing.

I can't recommend this series enough.

Recomendable.

SYNOPSIS

Two sisters are accused of murdering their father, and they each blame the other.

MY OPINION

I bought this book was $6 at Indigo (Canadian Barnes & Nobles) which is a STEAL and if you know how expensive books are here, you'll understand why I had to share this 😂

Anyways, the month of meh continues. I read The Plea years ago and it was the first book I ever binged in a day. I've been meaning to go back to him, but I'm not a woman of my word so it took me a hot minute. Unfortunately this was just not it TO ME. I can definitely see how other people love this book. It's entertaining, the case is juicy, and the pace is quite fast. I don't have any strong feelings toward this book... I just mainly found it corny and theatrical. It was kinda like reading an episode of Suits. Makes for good TV but can be a lil cringe on page.

Anyways, I'm not even gonna go on and on about it because I know this is truly a case of 'it's not you, it's me.' I own Twisted (another $6 steal), so I'll give it a whirl and I'm still excited for his upcoming release Kill For Me Kill For You but yeah.... ima pretend this never happened 😂

PROS AND CONS

Pros: juicy case, fast paced, some funny parts

Cons: unnecessary political comments, twist was predictable, corny, theatrical, writing felt uninspired and rushed at times

Two sisters on trial for their father's murder. Each daughter is represented by a lawyer who goes in thinking theirs is the innocent one. Then the trial begins and doubt sets in. Cavanagh includes narration thread from the guilty sister -- labelled "She." As the plot rolls out, little clues line up with one or the other. The reader is pulled one way and then another, as is the jury. Eddie and the opposing counsel, Kate, begin to realize that there is evil in the courtroom. One of these lawyers will find themselves on the losing side. Will the right sister be convicted? Top notch courtroom drama and a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Continuing with Steve Cavanagh’s great legal thriller series, I was pulled into this one from the opening pages. I tried to crack the case quickly, but only found myself more confused (in a good way) as things progressed. When two calls come in to 911 dispatch, they tell of a horrible attack on Frank Avellino, former mayor of New York City. The calls are placed by his daughters, Alexandra and Sofia, each pointing the finger at the other for the attack and sure that their sister is out of control. When police arrive, they take both girls into custody and arrest them for what turns out to be a murder. In a lottery system of sorts, lawyers flock to sign up the Avellino sisters, including Eddie Flynn. He’s able to sign Sofia Avellino, the quieter and more troubled sister, whose self-harm may be an impediment to her mental stability. With a DA salivating to nail at least one of the sisters, an offer is made to both in hopes that one will flip. The law firm representing Alexandra tries to rush the offer, which does not sit well with junior associate Kate Brooks, who also cannot stand the sexual harassment that she’s suffered by one of the named partners. In a bold move, Kate goes out on her own and convinces Alexandra to sign with her, sure that they can win the case by targeting Sofia as the weak link. While Flynn wants to destroy the DA’s case, he must keep the Alexandra attack at bay, worried that his own client will crumple under pressure. With a biased judge trying to work against him, Flynn will have to pull out all the stops to keep Sofia from facing the ultimate punishment, while trying to get to the bottom of what really happened that night at the Avellino mansion. With great plots and a handful of exciting characters, Cavanagh has penned what may be his best novel in the series to date. Recommended to those who love a good legal thriller, as well as the reader who has come to enjoy Eddie Flynn in all his glory.

Having binge reading the previous novels in this series a while back, I was forced to wait for the release of this novel. The wait was definitely worth it, as Steve Cavanagh does not hold back with the intensity and the legal maneuvering throughout. His focus on Eddie Flynn again is ideal, though there is little time or effort put into the backstory, but rather the ever-evolving legal career of a man who was once a great con artist with ties to organised crime. Flynn uses his strong legal mind the move through the minefield that is this case, where two sisters are pointing the finger at one another, with his own client the weaker of the two. Flynn’s gut says that she is telling the truth, though there is always the veil of mystery that keeps things from being too clear-cut. With a handful of strong supporting characters, Flynn pushes through to seek justice and the truth, not always the same thing. Cavanagh injects a number of strong characters on all sides of the story to keep things interesting and leaves the reader wondering what to expect. Included in this is a ‘she’ character, presumably one of the sisters and the actual murderer, as a perspective and storyline all her own evolves throughout the book, leaving the reader to wonder if it could be Alexandra or Sofia. In a story built on the she said/she said narrative, Cavanagh keeps the reader wondering throughout as to which sister is telling the truth and who might be lying. There are clues on both sides, but only one can be guilty, or so it would seem. With great build-up and a stellar court proceeding, the narrative catapults the reader into the middle of the action and will not let go. Chapters of varying lengths keep the reader hooked, particularly when ‘She’ is interspersed throughout, and the culmination will be a reveal the reader has sought from the opening pages. Likely the best of the series I have read, I can only hope that there are more to come soon, as Cavanagh has the gift for writing in this genre.

Kudos, Mr. Cavanagh, for another winner. I will have to read your standalone piece to keep myself busy as I wait for another Eddie Flynn novel.

This was one on my most anticipated reads for 2020 and it did not disappoint. I love a good legal thriller, growing up reading John Grisham novels with my dad. Steve Cavanagh is brilliant and writes the most original and addictive stories. Eddie Fylnn returns in his firth book but it can easily be read as a stand alone. In saying that, go back and read the others as they are all fantastic.

Two 911 calls from the same location on the same night. 2 sisters, Sofia and Alexandra find their father, a former New York City mayor brutally murdered in his home. Each sister points the finger at the other, a relationship where there I no love lost. The two sisters must now try to prove their innocence with their lawyers in a joint trial.

This is a very clever and twisty thriller that you will find hard to put down. It is quite graphic in its descriptions at times but don't let that put you off. Every time you think you know what is going on guess again! It will surprise and shock you.

And I will never listen to She by Elvis Costello the same way again!!

Thank you Hachette Australia for sending me an advanced copy of this book to read.

“She” 🎶 de Elvis Costello. La probabilidad de que leamos en el club el siguiente de la saga (El abogado del diablo) no es del fifty fifty... ¡Porque la leeremos seguro! 🔥

Best one yet!

I can’t put my love and obsession for this series into words. You all know what an obsession feels like I’m sure, and it’s one of the best feelings to experience it with a book.

Eddie Flynn is back….. I’m sold! Take my money

I loved Thirteen and was super keen to get my hands on the latest Eddie Flynn installment …. It is twisty, cunning, vicious and brutal. That’s all in the first few pages.

The book starts out with a 911 call transcript from caller Alexandra Avellino. She reports her father has been stabbed there’s blood everywhere. Alexandra hides in the bathroom, she’s tells the 911 dispatcher she’s coming up the stairs. I think she has a knife….It’s my sister Sofia.

….. but wait less than a minute later another 911 call comes in from the same house. Its Sofia on the phone, she’s found her father brutally murdered. She tells the dispatcher it was Alexandra she’s in the bathroom. Sofia is frightened and pleads for help, hurry she will kill me too.

Frank Avellino was brutally murdered that night…. Who do YOU Believe?

Enter Eddie Flynn. Both Sofia and Alexandra are on trial for murder in a joint trial. Which one is guilty, and which one is innocent? Eddie will represent one sister….. this book has so many twists and turns we have come to expect from Steve Cavanagh. I kept going back and forth on who the guilty party was.

It’s a game of cat and mouse, clever, captivating and seriously addictive. I can highly recommend this book and can’t wait for the next book. This is the third book I have read from Steve, he has quickly become a new favorite author.

Thank you to Hachette Australia and Steve Cavanagh for my copy in exchange for my honest review.

Eddie Flynn, your favorite ex-con man and now lawyer will be dealing with another juicy case! He is representing one of two sisters who are accusing each other of killing their father.

My previous novels were all so ‘’meh’’ when I finally picked this one I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed. Its been one of my favorite series so far. As per usual, this one was also excellent, fast-paced and twisty.

Theorizing on what would happen was fun, I had about 2.5 theories and one of them turned out to be right, I am so used to be completely blown away by Steve’s plot when reading his stories, this one felt a little easier to guess but nonetheless great!

As you read this book the title become obvious. Frank Avellino, former Mayor of New York, has been brutally murdered in his home. His body slashed to ribbons. Both of his adult daughters (Alexandra and Sofia) were there, both called 911, both have blood on them and both are accusing each other of the murder! These sisters hate each other. Both are arrested.

At the precinct a gaggle of lawyers are falling over themselves to represent one of the sisters. Levy of Levy, Bernard and Groff snags Alexandra and Eddie Flynn snags Sofia. He has a policy of only representing clients whom he believes are innocent. He is convinced of Sofia’s innocence, she is such a shy, withdrawn little thing.

On the Levy team is junior associate Kate Brooks. Back in their office the legal team are arguing about whether the cases should be heard separately or together. Kate disagrees with the consensus and makes a good case. Later, the other junior associate, Scott, presents her idea as his own. Levy agrees and Kate is now surplus to requirements. Ouch! She quits on the spot and heads over to the precinct to poach Alexandra for herself. Smart girl but this will have repercussions.

This is a hard book to review because either one of the sisters, or both, are guilty. There is no other possibility. But which one - that is the question. The evidence favours first one then the other sister. This one comes down to the wire. Along the way a number of potential witnesses either disappear or are murdered! Yikes, this killer is stone cold. Can you pick it? I couldn’t.

The Eddie Flynn books just get better and better.

The continuation of one of the best legal thriller series, the fifth Eddie Flynn story. With all its usual twists, surprises and brilliant climax, Steve Cavanagh continues the saga of the hustler turned lawyer. What a connudrum when two sisters each call 911 to announce the brutal murder of their father and accuse each other of the crime. So the redoutable Eddie and friends are called into action to defend one of the sisters and yet both appear equally guilty. Wonderful characters, great court drama and a riveting five-star can't put down read.

Steve Cavanagh writes original, fascinating, and addictive courtroom thrillers. This is the fifth book in the series, and these books get better and better. It was a clever, fast-paced book with a well-executed shocking, twisty plot. A series of vicious, sadistic, and gruesome crimes kept me nervous, surprised and riveted to my seat. I kept changing my mind about which of two sisters murdered their father, a former New York mayor. Each sister accuses the other of the brutal crime. Feelings of tension, suspense, and sadness were evoked.

Eddie Flynn, ex-conman turned lawyer is a brilliant creation. Fifty-Fifty works well as a stand-alone. I felt this was a superb, puzzling legal thriller, one which should keep readers of crime novels entertained. Recommended!

Fifty fifty was a great change of scenery!

The concept caught my interest immediately! Two sisters accusing each other for their father’s murder!

A very clever legal thriller that had me constantly alternating my guess of which one was guilty.
Very well written and developed, adeptly paced, engaging, thought-provoking, I didn’t want to put it down.
All characters were amazing, the clues were there but artfully placed throughout the plot.
The get-out-of-jail card erased my doubts and I was almost certain of the sister who should be convicted.
It was a fantastic read‼️

Frank Avellino, a former mayor of New York, is murdered in his home, and his daughters are the main suspects. Both are claiming the other one is guilty. Another in the wonderful Eddie Flynn series, but one which stretched my credibility about as far as it could be stretched without snapping. I wanted to say that strongly because it really spoiled my enjoyment of the novel, but having said that, I want to add that it was still an engaging and entertaining read. Cavanagh has a special talent for creating interesting supporting characters, and here he adds Kate and Bloch to that team. A good but irritating read.

Frank Avellino, the ex-NYC mayor has been stabbed 53 times in his own home. His two daughters, Alexandra and Sofia are both in the house and making 911 calls blaming the other for the crime.

Both women are arrested at the scene on the suspicion of murder and it is up to their lawyers Eddie Flynn, representing Sofia and Kate Brooks representing Alexandra to prove that their clients are innocent.

But which sister is the murderer and not only of her father but a serial killer too. Is it the cool, calm, and confident Alexandra or the mentally unstable Sofia?

This is the first book in the Eddie Flynn series that I have read and I can tell you that this book is a real corker. It gets under your skin, has you trying to decipher each bit of information you are given and playing jury, although there was something that happened very early on in the book that had me pointing my finger at one of the women, turns out I was right!

There are plenty of twists and turns to keep you on your toes as well as a few red herrings are thrown in for good measure. The chapters are short which in my opinion always makes a book feel more intense, and there was never a dull moment.

I really liked Eddie and his way of working, especially as he is an ex-con-come-lawyer so he is good at working out his clients.

The book was certainly different from anything I have read before, I don’t think I’ve ever come across a female serial killer, nor one who is as cold and emotionless as this culprit was.

Overall, it is a fantastic read that had me engrossed from the first page to the last. It works perfectly well as a standalone but I now need to go back and read the four other Eddie Flynn series novels.

2.5

I was very excited by the premise of this book— two sisters accuse each other of the same murder. How would the author steer us around the crime while keeping us guessing the killer’s identity?

I’ve been struggling to pinpoint exactly which boxes Fifty Fifty failed to tick for me. The idea was good, the pages turned easily, and I couldn’t say with absolute certainty which sister had committed the crime. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel my uncertainty was due to any clever writing. Sections of the book were deliberately misleading— but this felt clumsy. For example, after revealing that the killer went for a run wearing black Lycra & a ball cap, extreme care was taken to show that both sisters were in possession of these items and had recently used them. There are many such double blinds. I don’t want my hand held when I’m reading a crime novel, but neither do I want the mystery to rely solely on the author choosing in the end who did it, tying everything neatly together, without actually leaving any breadcrumbs to lead us one way or the other. Isn’t trying to figure out the answer half the fun? Am I supposed to be satisfied with the conclusion that Levy is outed as the creep that he is and all of Kate’s troubles miraculously evaporate? It would be great if life happened this way, but unfortunately most people don’t have a Mr. Flynn to pickpocket damning evidence for them— even if Levy OF COURSE deserved it, I don’t feel satisfied by this outcome because it is SO far-fetched and the same can be said of most of the denouement. Everything just falls into place. Consequences don’t exist. Kate gets away with poaching a client. Eddie gets the other lawyer in this massive case to cooperate with him (give me a break) and to defer to him. “She” gets maimed but not killed, thereby suffering because she has to live through not getting what she wants. I could go on.

I didn’t really like any of the characters. Kate had potential, but she flip flopped between an extremely self-conscious young woman who constantly held her tongue, allowing any of her male colleagues to walk all over her, steal her ideas, etc— to a kickass lawyer who could carry the weight of an enormously complicated and highly publicised murder trial (her first, by the way) squarely on her shoulders. And yet, even after this “transformation” she still wants her friend to hold her hand and tell her she’s supporting the right sister. Inconsistent Kate isn’t believable in my opinion. Nor is Bloch. Nor is Harper. Nor are the sisters. Tell me how either of these women (ONE OF WHOM IS CONSIDERED TO BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS) manage to go about and murder another several people without anyone observing them?? This case is highly publicised and yet no reporters, investigators, or members of the general public are keeping an eye on them?????

All of these qualms aside, I realise I’ve painted quite a poor picture of this novel. My expectations were high because of the excellent rating/reviews I’ve seen as well as the hook which, as stated above, drew me in. I do think Fifty Fifty (perhaps all of the Eddie Flynn novels— though I couldn’t say for sure as I’ve only read this one) could work nicely as a television series with less “telling” and more “showing”. I’ve seen from some of the other reviews that some who didn’t like this one have read and enjoyed others in the Eddie Flynn series but thought this one lacked the same oomph. I could be persuaded to give another one a chance.

4 courtroom drama stars

Eddie Flynn is back! This time he's defending the sister who he believes is innocent. Sofia and Alexandra Avellino are both charged with viciously murdering their father. He's the former mayor of NYC, so it's a very high profile case.

It's a joint trial, so both sisters are on trial with one jury as they accuse each other of the crime. The evidence implicates both of them, so who is lying and who is telling the truth? Eddie and team are digging up clues as quickly as they can while dealing with a racist judge and opportunistic DA.

As always, there are tense courtroom scenes. Judge Harry makes a return in this one, he's one of my favorite characters.

I can't really tell you more about the plot but this writer just gets better and better. His writing is polished and he creates such great tension.

These make for excellent buddy reads with Ceecee, Jayme, MarilynW and Pat. Can't wait to read the next one.

3,5 estrellas.

I’ve read a bunch of legal thrillers and they sometimes tend to drag and feel a bit samey, so it’s a pleasant surprise to find that the legal thriller can be done in such a way that it feels fresh and new. Steve Cavanagh has that knack with his series featuring defense lawyer Eddie Muller and in Fifty Fifty, the 4th book of the series, he has managed to come up with another unique scenario that provides the usual adversarial courtroom stoushes but gives it an added twist.

“She had never before been connected to any of her crimes by law enforcement. Now she sat in a police precinct, facing a charge for a murder she had committed. She was exactly where she wanted to be. Where she had planned to be.”

This is a most unusual murder case. The former mayor of New York City has been brutally murdered, stabbed numerous times, his body completely mutilated. In the house with him were his two adult daughters, Alexandra and Sofia, and both of them had called 9-1-1 claiming the other was responsible for his death.

Both women are arrested and both are to be tried for murder. One or both are very likely to be guilty so, as far as the prosecutor is concerned, he’s facing a win-win situation no matter which sister is guilty.

Representing Sofia is Eddie Muller, the former con man turned defense attorney with a wealth of resources and brainpower at his fingertips. He’s convinced the woman, regardless of the history of depression, tendency to self harm and myriad psychological issues, is innocent.

Representing Alexandra is Kate Brooks and how she came to be her attorney is an interesting story in itself.

One of these attorneys is sitting beside an innocent woman while the either works for a ruthless killer who is continuing to clean house, killing witnesses even while the trial is ongoing. They have also apparently planted a piece of evidence designed to get themselves acquitted and their sister convicted.

This is all about the characters, from the truly evil killer to the arsehole misogynistic lawyer and the various types of judges that play a major role in the direction the case takes. They’re all well developed and prompted me to quickly take sides. They were given enough personality that they created an emotional response from me which meant that I was fully invested in the outcome of the story.

Having read other books in Steve Cavanagh’s Eddie Muller series, I had to keep reminding myself about how devilish he can be in laying false trails and misdirection. Throughout the course of the trial we are asked to decide which of the two sisters is the murderer. And he drops hints, clues and words of advice throughout. As I found out while reading Thirteen, nothing is to be taken at face value and this is one of the strengths displayed in Fifty Fifty.

The book is blessed with a plot that’s strong, taking great care to hide the all-important identity of the killer, yet dropping hints along the way that kept me intrigued and interested. I found myself constantly switching my guess as to who the killer was and, even at the end, I think I got it wrong.

Another brightly realised Eddie Muller case that builds tension inexorably until arriving at a resounding conclusion. It firmly cements the series as another on my must-read list.

Another very enjoyable Eddie Flynn legal/courtroom thriller.

Lots of detail; a complex and rewarding plot, all with the usual Steve Cavanagh puzzles and twists.

Recomendable lectura.
