Parte da un protagonista maschile che è più ombre che luce; che è uno spirito libero e pure traditore seriale (per la povera fidanzata del momento); che si innamora ma non si esime comunque dal vivere la sua vita sino in fondo; che si autocontrolla e prova in tutti i modi a far prevalere l'interesse familiare sui propri sentimenti. Insomma, Ross Davis non è uno stinco di santo e non viene neppure edulcorato per darci una storia subito tutta cuoricini, però ha spessore e colpisce per la sua coerenza anche nel lato oscuro. Questo aspetto mi è piaciuto moltissimo.
Tanto Ross è str**** e coriaceo, tanto Sherlin è sfuggente, ambigua, piena di segreti e bugie. Eppure, i due insieme fanno scintille e mi hanno intrigato. Da San Diego al Canada, dal mondo delle miniere e dei diamanti, a feste in maschera, a scandali e furti, il libro ci porta in una girandola di intrighi e ricchezza, con ritmo spigliato.

Ogni nuovo libro di Ryan che esce mi sorprende sempre; uno, perché riesce ad avvincermi e a lasciarmi all'ultima pagina con la voglia pazzesca di iniziarne un altro (sono suoi i pochi fantasy di centinaia di pagine che ho riletto più volte con immutato piacere), e, due, perché i suoi canovacci sono costantemente diversi e originali. Dopo due serie magnifiche ci si poteva aspettare di imbattersi in qualche ripetizione di trama e invece no, anche stavolta, lo scenario è cambiato insieme con il regno, con tematiche religioso-secolari e sanguinose diatribe eretiche che entrano di prepotenza a influenzare le lotte di potere e le pretese di figli illegittimi.
Il protagonista Alwyn, già orfano, già fuorilegge della foresta, già condannato alle miniere e poi fuggito, già promosso a scrivano e poi a cavaliere senza titolo e formazione, continua la sua inarrestabile carriera tra campagne belliche, macchinazioni e indagini tra le antiche biblioteche del regno.
Seppure al seguito della Martire e del potere della verità di fede da imporre anche con la spada, Alwyn conserva intanto il suo cinismo, la sua capacità di cogliere le menzogne e le ipocrisie, soprattutto la sua bontà di fondo. Tutti i protagonisti di Ryan hanno questo in comune, in fondo; più che prescelti dalla vittoria facile, sono oscuri singoli che arrancano nella vita, facendosi strada a caro prezzo, spesso soli e senza lieto fine, pur restando fedeli a un loro codice personale che contempla valori in discesa come l'amicizia, la protezione del debole, il raggiungere la vittoria con le perdite minori, piuttosto che il trionfo in un bagno di sangue, e il cercare di comprendere persino le ragioni del proprio nemico.
E potremmo dire che in queste 670 pagine sono racchiuse ben tre parti diverse: una parte epica e guerresca con tanto di assedio in senso classico; una parte di scoperta, ritorno alle radici e formazione; e infine una ineluttabile corsa verso la tragedia e la rivelazione estrema, che un po' temevo e che mi ha lasciata ancor più tesa verso la conclusione. Eppure li trovo affascinanti perché non appartengono al nostro mondo, ma provengono da un passato difficile da immaginare. Prediligo i pesci fossili, perché la trama delle scaglie e le pinne li accomunano a quelli che mangiamo ogni venerdì, avvicinandoli al presente pur nella loro stranezza. Fu grazie ai fossili che conobbi Mary Anning e la sua famiglia.
Donne di scienza o dilettanti benedette dall'intuito? Mi verrebbe da dire che se lasci volontariamente metà del genere umano (quello femminile) analfabeta, accogliendo con sdegno le loro scoperte e idee, non lo ammetti nei circoli, nelle biblioteche e nelle università, non segni il nome delle ricercatrici nelle targhette dei musei e non concedi loro neanche il minimo riconoscimento, è ben dura trovare una giustificazione naturale e divina per cui solo i maschi possano dirsi dotati di un intelletto superiore. I brividi vengono solo a pensare che questo accadeva non più di un secolo fa intorno a noi e continua ad accadere spesso e volentieri intorno a noi, nel cosiddetto nuovo Millennio.
Il romanzo si ispira alla storia vera di Mary Anning, che iniziò da ragazzina, sulle orme del padre, a cercare e disseppellire ossa di grandi animali sconosciuti, ritenuti erroneamente "coccodrilli", così come pesci e conchiglie racchiuse nella pietra. Erano veri e propri fossili, ma allora, a inizio Ottocento, con la Bibbia coma unica fonte riconosciuta sulla creazione e sulle meraviglie della natura, era impensabile concepire specie estinte o ere in cui l'uomo non era presente, o anche un minimo pensiero evolutivo (da lì a poco Darwin si apprestava a partire per i suoi viaggi e avrebbe pubblicato il suo trattato solo nel 1859).
Così Mary porta alla luce uno o più ittiosauri e osa, da povera illetterata, dove insigni studiosi non si spingono o brancolano nell'ottusa ignoranza. Accanto a lei c'è Elizabeth Philpot, altra appassionata e collezionista, quasi dimenticata dalla storia. Un incontro non voluto, tenero e malinconico. Jefferson Kidd, dopo una lunga vita come soldato durante la Guerra Civile, marito innamorato e padre affettuoso, nonché tipografo appassionato, riempie l'età della pensione e vivacchia percorrendo a cavallo gli sterminati spazi del Texas come "l'uomo dei giornali". Proprio così. In una società analfabeta, dove la gente dei villaggi non ha tempo per aggiornarsi ma ha comunque fame di saper cosa accade nel mondo, il capitano Kidd si siede e, per qualche moneta, legge con voce ferma e nitida le notizie, le curiosità e gli accadimenti del mondo, avvicinando storie e continenti.
Finchè non gli viene affidata una missione insolita: riportare ai parenti sopravvissuti una bimba rapita dai Comanche. Il capitano crede di non avere pazienza e strumenti per questa creatura spaventata e diffidente, che vuole soltanto ritornare dalla sua tribù. E ci sono nemici che vogliono portarsi via la ragazzina per tornaconto. Eppure Kidd ha ancora molto da dare e prende a cuore la missione, tra agguati, inseguimenti, conversazioni silenziose e scambi di culture. Anche questa parte dedicata a madame Helen si è rivelato appassionante: l'avevamo sempre vista sullo sfondo come formidabile padrona di una singola casa del piacere, dove ricchi e nobili si divertono a soddisfare fantasie in libertà e ciascuno si dona senza compenso; stavolta ripartiamo dal passato, con una Helene poco più che adolescente, sopravvissuta a caro prezzo agli orrori della rivoluzione francese e della prigionia. Prima di riuscire ad arrivare a Londra e realizzare il suo progetto, la ragazza ha un fugace ma intenso incontro con Philip, un giovane appena subentrato nel titolo di famiglia e destinato a un matrimonio combinato. Forse è amore, forse lui potrebbe rinunciare a tutto per lei, ma Helene ha fame di libertà, per prima cosa, e ha bisogno di crearsi una posizione solida per la figlia lasciata in Francia. Il destino impiega diciotto anni per farli rincontrare e, da adulti, l'attrazione ha un peso e un prezzo del tutto diverso.
Che dire? Molto bello. Una protagonista che è riuscita a rivalersi da sola, trovando la propria forza e il proprio riscatto senza vergognarsi e senza arrendersi agli abusi del più forte. Giudizio, peraltro, positivo, perché è un romanzo d'azione che si legge in modo scorrevole e presenta una trama diversa dalle solite.
Ross, conte e spia in incognito per la Corona, è fuggito in modo precipitoso dalla Francia, dopo aver scoperto un tradimento interno, ma è stato catturato dal nemico. Costretto a gettarsi in mare dalla nave, vicino alla costa inglese, ha un'unica possibilità per salvarsi e riabilitare il proprio nome: raggiungere Londra in qualche modo e procurarsi ulteriori documenti segreti a prova del tradimento.
Il caso vuole che arrivi, ferito e fradicio, in un piccolo cottage malmesso, dove vive Grace, una vedova con suo figlio. Ma la donna è a sua volta in incognito e ha bisogno di un conte che le dia protezione e le consenta di far valere le proprie pretese in società. Uno scambio di favori, insomma, e un viaggio periglioso verso Londra, con tanto di inseguimenti, processi, aggressioni e scoperte.

La principale critica che muovo è l'assurdità, al limite del surreale, della trama complessiva. Immaginate tre principesse in fuga (sin da bambine) da un (inventato) regno minuscolo dei Pirenei, insieme a un principe di un altrettanto regno immaginario, anche lui esiliato. Mentre la nonna lotta a casa per riprendere il potere, le sorelle vagano per la Scozia (ma perché?) senza sapere bene cosa fare di se stesse (forse farsi sposare da nobili ricchi?).
La seconda sorella Amy, ad esempio, ha trovato ospitalità presso una anziana un po' svagata e non può restare insensibile di fronte alle presunte ingiustizie del nobile del luogo, che non tratta bene i propri fittavoli. Ora, a parte che fa un po' ridere che questa tizia che vive a carico degli altri pensi bene di fare la Robin Hood anziché (magari) iniziare a lavorare e aiutare economicamente di suo (mi ricorda un po' certe progressiste di oggi che sono sempre a invocare diritti per tutti e poi manco si sognano di lavorare e pagare le tasse di solidarietà per la collettività), ma è l'ideona di Amy che mi ha lasciato basita. Ebbene, convince il villaggio a "rapire" il marchese del luogo, per chiedere un riscatto, con tanto di prigionia in catene e lezioni di biasimo morale riversate sul malcapitato.

Dopo aver letto quasi tutti i volumi dedicati all'universo Shadowhunters, ero curiosa di affrontare questo fantasy diverso, sia perché totalmente slegato dalla saga che ha reso celebre l'autrice, sia perché presentato come diretto a un pubblico adulto (e non più young adult).
Mi sono imbattuta in una Cassandra Clare diversa, senza dubbio, anche se resta comunque a mio avviso una lettura edulcorata, priva di eccessi di violenza o scene esplicite. Il fatto di essere un primo volume lo ha reso in automatico un libro più descrittivo-introduttivo che non d'azione, e devo dire che la Clare si prende gran parte delle 700 pagine per condurci passo passo nel regno di di Castellane, per presentarci la famiglia reale, le grandi famiglie del consiglio, i regni vicini, i nemici interni ed esterni. Molta carne è messa sul fuoco, con una narrazione talora un po' statica, anche se ritengo (o mi auguro) che nel seguito le vicende potranno avere un ritmo diverso, visto quanto il lettore ha già appreso.
L'aspetto più interessante è che il tutto viene visto attraverso due POV principali. Kel è lo scudo umano del principe ereditario, un orfano addestrato a corte per fare il sosia quando le cerimonie e le apparizioni pubbliche sono noiose o troppo rischiose (alla maniera dei sosia di certi dittatori moderni); se all'inizio la sua lealtà verso i reali è assoluta, a poco a poco inizia a creparsi, di fronte a scoperte amare e inaspettate. Lin è invece una giovane donna della comunità Ashkar, una popolazione perseguitata altrove e che sopravvive nel regno, a patto di restare confinata e non ostentare le proprie tradizioni (mi ha ricordato un po' la situazione dei ghetti ebraici all'interno delle città del passato); grazie alle proprie conoscenze mediche, Lin riesce a introdursi presso la corte e altrove, anche se deve lottare di continuo per la sua origine e il suo essere donna. Intorno a loro si muove un mondo variegato, in cui è ancora presto per cogliere tutti i pericoli e i traditori.
Nel complesso, non mi è dispiaciuto e l'ho trovato comunque scorrevole e intrigante, tanto che voglio proseguire la serie. Diciamo che ero così abituata ai finali mozzafiato e sadici della Clare, che stavolta sono rimasta con la sensazione di una lettura semplicemente interrotta....more

4,5 - Finalmente è tornata Tessa Dare con una nuova serie ispirata ai retelling di fiabe della tradizione. Si parte con una sua personale versione di La bella e la bestia, ovvero con l'incontro tra una signorina Buonanotte e un duca ipovedente. Come al solito, la Dare confeziona una trama sopra le righe e non sempre aderente a un rigoroso contesto storico: lo dico subito, anche se è vero che ci ha abituato a queste storie che giocano tra ambientazione Regency e licenze di fantasia, per cui ormai va presa come la sua specifica cifra stilistica.
Izzy, figlia di un celebre scrittore intorno a cui si è generato un vero e proprio movimento di lettori entusiasti, si trova, come molte fanciulle di buona società, sul lastrico dopo la morte del padre. Piuttosto triste da dirsi, ma questi genitori senza eredi maschi non avevano come loro priorità lasciare qualcosa, in un modo o nell'altro, per le figlie che li avevano accuditi sino all'ultimo e che non potevano avere nulla di proprietà. Quando le arriva un lascito inaspettato, Izzy non ci pensa due volte a precipitarsi a incassare. Ma, ahimè, il castello decrepito che potrebbe rappresentare la sua occasione di salvezza è già abitato, e per di più da un duca arcigno e solitario, ben deciso a difenderlo.
Ne deriva una convivenza forzata che regala ogni giorno sorprese, battibecchi e imprevisti divertenti, con contorno di personaggi altrettanto gradevoli e simpatici. Ho trovato deliziosa, ma anche arguta, Izzy, con i suoi sogni e i suoi libri d'avventure, così come ho amato il burbero e tenero duca confinato nel maniero.
Conosceva abbastanza bene la solitudine da capire che la parte peggiore non era non avere nessuno che si prendesse cura di te, era non avere nessuno di cui prendersi cura....more

Ho il dubbio, peraltro, che ci siano state sforbiciate di pagine, perché la trama va a singhiozzo, come se mancassero passaggi logici, e rasenta un costante livello di noia/stupidità (con una nobile illegittima che, per vendicarsi del Ton che non l'accoglie, pensa bene di calarsi nei panni di una Robin Hood femminista ai danni di nobili debosciati e sporcaccioni...).

Un retelling, anzi, un doppio retelling di Romeo e Giulietta, tradotto nella rivalità di due famiglie di streghe d'origine russa nella Manhattan dei nostri giorni. Da un lato, il clan dei Fedorov, con il boss Koshei l'Impassibile e i suoi tre figli (Dima, Roma e Lev), con un'attività di estorsione camuffata da negozio di magazzino/antiquariato, e dall'altro la strega Baba Yaga e le sue sette figlie (di cui, in realtà, vengono approfondite solo la maggiore, Masha, e la minore, Sasha), dedite al traffico di sostanze illecite, dietro la graziosa facciata di un negozio di prodotti di bellezza ed erboristici. Nessuna delle famiglie è quella dei "buoni", insomma: se i fratelli Fedorov lottano anche tra loro per ottenere l'apprezzamento del padre, Baba Yaga mette il proprio successo sopra alle aspirazioni delle sue figlie.
La struttura ricorda la tragedia, con presentazione dei personaggi, preludi, interludi, e l'inesorabile scorrere delle scene verso la (doppia) tragedia. Dodici anni prima, Dima e Masha si amavano profondamente, ma l'ostilità tra i loro genitori li ha portati a divenire nemici, tanto che, all'inizio, proprio Masha, convinta del tradimento di Dima, si reca ad ucciderlo. Mentre l'amore tra i due è più tragico, la relazione tra Lev e Sasha si sviluppa invece in modo più lieve e divertente, al ritmo di chat telefoniche e incontri notturni.

Ovviamente, l'elemento magico sfalsa la realtà, per cui c'è un po' di tutto: morti apparenti, cuori da proteggere, incantesimi, fantasmi e ombre, finchè la rivalità otterrà il suo prezzo di sangue. Di contorno, c'è pure un avvocato fae dalle battute argute (forse il mio personaggio favorito, oltre a Dima), che svolge il ruolo di giocatore/tramite in mezzo alla disputa. Lettura intensa e vivida, con il pregio di avere un'inizio e una fine. Edizione illustrata bellissima; inglese intermedio.

Immaginate un mondo successivo (forse di qualche secolo) a una guerra pesante che ha scardinato la vecchia geografia conosciuta e tolto persino la memoria storica alle generazioni che sopravvivono a stento. Le antiche metropoli sono letteralmente sprofondate in un infinito deserto sabbioso: solo scendendo, con mezzi rudimentali, a trecento, quattrocento metri, si possono toccare i piani alti di quelli che dovevano essere grattacieli, con gli interni congelati in uffici vuoti e inutili, oppure, se si ha fortuna, si possono recuperare materiali e oggetti del passato, che fanno la fortuna dei minatori. Ovviamente, la vita di chi scende e nuota nella sabbia è breve e rischiosa; i "sommozzatori" sono quasi una casta, che si tramanda segreti ed esperienze, in balia dei signori delle guerre e dei gruppi tribali.
Dopo essere stati abbandonati dal padre, celebre conoscitore della sabbia, quattro fratelli ne hanno seguito le orme, crescendo come bambini-adulti che potevano contare soltanto su stessi, con l'unico legame di sangue destinato a svanire tra solitudine, paura e fatalismo. Ma quando uno di loro si troverà nei guai seri, i loro sentimenti fraterni dovranno tornare ad affiorare in superficie, per cercare di salvarsi gli uni con gli altri.
Un'ambientazione originale e interessante che colpisce, con un Colorado devastato da cataclismi bellici e con un'umanità dolente che tenta di sopravvivere, tra minatori, cannibali, pirati e schiavisti. E un buon ritmo di tensione, con colpi di scena finale che stuzzicano la curiosità per il secondo volume....more

Quattro ragazzi s'incontrano alla Lincoln Indian Training Scho, un istituto che si propone di convertire e conformare minori nativi, anche se spesso con modalità violente e conseguenze drammatiche. Odie e Albert sono bianchi e hanno solo la colpa di essere orfani e poveri, Mose è un ragazzo indiano a cui hanno strappato la lingua, eppure capace di esprimere una dolcezza incredibile, Emmy è una bambina che la direttrice dell'orfanotrofio vuole per sfruttare un suo particolare talento.
Quando scappano, la loro è una fuga per sopravvivere, ma, oltre alla caccia che si scatena alle loro spalle, si trovano davanti una strada costellata di "mostri" e pericoli, difficoltà e tradimenti, abbandono e conforto, distruzione e bellezza. Nicola è sopravvissuta a un incidente ferroviario ed è rimasta muta, venendo lasciata dal fidanzato e divenendo motivo di tribolazione per la famiglia. Il barone Jack è invece un industriale ricco e intelligente che sta attraversando un forte periodo di stress a seguito di proprie vicissitudini (si ritiene responsabile di un certo incidente...) I due iniziano una relazione amorosa, per quanto vietata dal rigido regolamento del villaggio.

Può capitare che la malattia da curare non sia altro che la disobbedienza alla propria famiglia: infatti lady Sarah è stata rinchiusa dal padre, duca scapestrato che vuole impossessarsi della dote di lei prima della maggiore età; deve rinsavirsi e sposare un lord connivente se non vuole finire in modo definitivo in un istituto per donne anticonvenzionali. Sarah fa di tutto per fuggire, ma non riesce a suscitare simpatia negli abitanti, in quanto la sua idea è quella di fare veramente la pazza eccentrica (con il risultato di aggravare la propria situazione). Neppure Tristan, figlio del barone del luogo e incaricato di gestire il centro, intende solidarizzare con lei.
Peccato. Poteva essere una storia di denuncia sulla condizione femminile, invece è di nuovo tutto reso in modo quasi ridicolo. La lady è una macchietta inutile con solito finale tra sospiri e amore per l'eroe....more

In ogni caso, si immagina che un gruppo di fondatori-membri della buona società abbia assoldato un intero mini-villaggio (Puddling-on-the-Wold: 5 vie, 5 negozi, una canonica e tre cottage per gli "Ospiti") per trasformarlo in luogo di residenza per villeggianti "forzati" e ricchi (per esempio, un rampollo preda di dipendenze, un parente con problemi di esaurimento, una figlia ribelle, ecc.). Si tratta di una sorta di ultimo tentativo prima di rinchiudere i malcapitati a Bedlam o in altri istituti/manicomi in pratica.
Il primo Ospite pagante (e non volontario) è il visconte Henry Challoner, reduce di guerra, traumatizzato da massacri e fisicamente provato dalle ferite. Mentre cerca di fuggire alla noia (o fuggire proprio), il lord s'imbatte nella maestra del paese, che fa parte della squadra di lavoranti/carcerieri (sono tutti d'accordo e pagati per l'attività). Soltanto Rachel riesce a comprendere il tormento dell'uomo e prova ad aiutarlo in qualche modo. Gli argomenti sono degni di nota, ma il tono vira troppo nella commediola scherzosa e perde smalto. Mentre il duca, dieci anni dopo, è costretto a rincorrerla per la penisola, a casa il fratello di lei pensa bene di fuggire con una debuttante promessa ad altri. 4 stelline e mezzo. Questo è un tomo (contiene due volumi) che mi sono regalata per l'ultimo Natale e credo di aver letto 768 pagine in tre giorni, per dare l'idea di quanto mi sia piaciuto. Di certo, è young adult, con personaggi giovani, nessun elemento guerresco e con una storia d'amore in sottofondo, ma è avventuroso, con intrighi politici, molto emozionante e in vari punti divertente. Uno di quei libri che leggi con grande soddisfazione, sorriso sulle labbra e schiena abbandonata sul divano o sul dondolo (visione che per me è il massimo, come lettrice).
La narrazione segue due filoni principali: da un lato, la giovane Kazi, una Rahtan, guerriera d'elite della regina di Venda, viene inviata a investigare (ed eventualmente arrestare) il capo del Ballenger, che si proclama uno dei clan più antichi e rivendica la sua autonomia commerciale. Ma quando Kazi giunge in territorio nemico, il precedente Patrei è appena morto e gli è succeduto uno dei figli, l'orgoglioso e ribelle Jase. Per quanto i due si detestino all'istante, si troveranno a condividere una prigionia comune e a conoscersi da vicino in modo forzato. Il problema è che nessuno si fida dell'altro, perché sono influenzati da ulteriori complotti, tradimenti, e da una serie di pregiudizi pesanti.
Ho già detto di quanto sia scorrevole? Aggiungete anche una parte di background sulla storia dei Ballenger che aggiunge un tocco suggestivo-leggendario. Ho scoperto solo alla fine che esiste una trilogia precedente, di cui questa dilogia è una sorta di spin-off. In realtà si legge tranquillamente senza problemi....more
