Quando ho iniziato questa trilogia, non avevo il minimo dubbio sul fatto che mi sarei divertita e appassionata (perché Ryan è comunque Ryan); semmai, Quando ho iniziato questa trilogia, non avevo il minimo dubbio sul fatto che mi sarei divertita e appassionata (perché Ryan è comunque Ryan); semmai, l'unica piccola riserva riguardava il protagonista, visto che, dopo cinque libri su Vaelin, un pezzo nel mio cuore era stato comunque già occupato a durata indeterminata.
Eppure, pur non scalfendo il primato di Valin, devo dire che Alwyn lo Scrivano è riuscito a ritagliarsi uno spazio tutto suo grazie a un'evoluzione incredibile, graduale ma sempre più convincente; partito figlio illegittimo, allevato come fuorilegge e scampato una prima volta alla morte, e poi di nuovo catturato e condannato alle miniere, ha continuato a risollevarsi, apprendendo la storia, la politica, l'arte della diplomazia e la fede; e via dicendo, sempre inseguito dalla sorte (e forse da una maledizione), sempre nel partito di minoranza, in un saliscendi di trionfi, tradimenti, vittorie e delusioni.
Se il secondo volume era servito per farlo maturare ulteriormente e cominciare a fare luce sulle sue scelte, anche qui abbiamo quasi tre romanzi in uno, con ben tre fasi diverse, con battaglie, fughe, assedi, affrontando persino il mistero ancestrale dei Maleciti. Con lui tornano i comprimari e tutte le grandi passioni e debolezze umane, dall'invidia all'orgoglio, dall'amore alla lealtà, dall'onore all'egoismo.
Un grande arazzo tessuto con destrezza, un romanzo magnificamente scritto e tradotto. Una trilogia che rileggerei anche domani.

Sarà che amo le Cenerentole impavide che si salvano (quasi) da sole e i cavalieri per nulla perfetti che riescono comunque a riscattarsi, ma Cate e Prudence sono davvero una bella coppia.
Cate è in realtà il protagonista maschile, visto che è il diminutivo di Catesby, già soldato valoroso e attualmente figlio cadetto senza più occupazioni e prospettive: dopo aver venduto il titolo, sopravvive tra taverne, piccoli risparmi e amici che gli vogliono ancora bene. In ogni caso, ben lontano dalla famiglia che lo ignora. Anche Prudence è ignorata dalla famiglia. Dopo essersi sacrificata per aiutare il fratello a crearsi una carriera, è stata relegata in una cittadina sperduta, con una rendita ridicola e senza la possibilità di fare nulla per migliorare la propria esistenza. Destino vuole che lui, pur intontito dai fumi dell'alcol, abbia ancora ben saldo il senso dell'onore e accorra in suo aiuto, innescando una girandola di eventi che li porterà alle nozze, ovvero a un'unione improbabile però duratura.
Rispetto allo stile dell'autrice, qui c'è molto meno erotismo rispetto ai primi volumi, e più romanticismo, meno frivolezze e più pragmatismo. Tanto che il numero undici va a collocarsi tra i miei preferiti dei Malloren e sono curiosa di affrontare gli ultimi due. Ammetto che ci ho messo parecchio a terminare questo volume rispetto ai miei standard, ma non per fatica; semplicemente, perché la mole è davvero impressionante, ed è densa, ricca di eventi e personaggi da assorbire e assaporare. Sono oltre 720 pagine che varrebbero come due romanzi di un qualsiasi altro autore comune mortale. Tuttavia, Jay è nell'Olimpo da tempo e non mi aspettavo davvero niente di meno.
Anzi, un anno è stato lungo per attendere di ritornare nelle terre dolorose contese tra umani e vampiri, rese semibuie dopo l'avvento del Sine Die, e ormai quasi spopolate di prede "vive". I succhiasangue sono voraci, devastano gli ultimi villaggi e espugnano le ultime fortezze, conducono via carri carichi di "bestiame", mentre l'Ordine d'Argento è quasi impotente, decimato da troppe guerre, e l'Imperatore si è asserragliato in un ultimo lembo a est.
Dopo un primo volume giocato su almeno tre piani temporali, ero curiosa di vedere cos'avrebbe escogitato Kristoff per proseguire la narrazione delle avventure di Gabriel de León , ex Santo d'Argento, ex marito e padre, figlio di un vampiro e di un'umana, tradito e traditore (a seconda delle differenti forze in campo). Ebbene, anche stavolta la scelta narrativa è scaltra ed efficace, in quanto riusciamo a seguire gli innumerevoli sviluppi da più punti di vista (non dirò di chi e in che modo).
Resta il clima cupo e oscuro, con deragliamenti splatter e sanguinolenti; resta l'enorme grandezza tormentata di Gabriel, il suo peso sulle spalle, la sua angoscia, il suo coraggio, il suo sarcasmo sprezzante, la sua speranza esile e mai sopita, il suo essere un guastafeste anticonvenzionale, senza ipocrisie e servilismi. Uno che ci crede e ci prova sino in fondo, insomma.

È come una tempesta, si aspetta che esaurisca la sua furia e si fa quello che si può con ciò che resta quando scende la calma.
Ogni nuovo libro di Ryan che esce mi sorprende sempre; uno, perché riesce ad avvincermi e a lasciarmi all'ultima pagina con la voglia pazzesca di iniziarne un altro (sono suoi i pochi fantasy di centinaia di pagine che ho riletto più volte con immutato piacere), e, due, perché i suoi canovacci sono costantemente diversi e originali. Dopo due serie magnifiche ci si poteva aspettare di imbattersi in qualche ripetizione di trama e invece no, anche stavolta, lo scenario è cambiato insieme con il regno, con tematiche religioso-secolari e sanguinose diatribe eretiche che entrano di prepotenza a influenzare le lotte di potere e le pretese di figli illegittimi.
Il protagonista Alwyn, già orfano, già fuorilegge della foresta, già condannato alle miniere e poi fuggito, già promosso a scrivano e poi a cavaliere senza titolo e formazione, continua la sua inarrestabile carriera tra campagne belliche, macchinazioni e indagini tra le antiche biblioteche del regno.
Seppure al seguito della Martire e del potere della verità di fede da imporre anche con la spada, Alwyn conserva intanto il suo cinismo, la sua capacità di cogliere le menzogne e le ipocrisie, soprattutto la sua bontà di fondo. Tutti i protagonisti di Ryan hanno questo in comune, in fondo; più che prescelti dalla vittoria facile, sono oscuri singoli che arrancano nella vita, facendosi strada a caro prezzo, spesso soli e senza lieto fine, pur restando fedeli a un loro codice personale che contempla valori in discesa come l'amicizia, la protezione del debole, il raggiungere la vittoria con le perdite minori, piuttosto che il trionfo in un bagno di sangue, e il cercare di comprendere persino le ragioni del proprio nemico.
E potremmo dire che in queste 670 pagine sono racchiuse ben tre parti diverse: una parte epica e guerresca con tanto di assedio in senso classico; una parte di scoperta, ritorno alle radici e formazione; e infine una ineluttabile corsa verso la tragedia e la rivelazione estrema, che un po' temevo e che mi ha lasciata ancor più tesa verso la conclusione. Questo libro è stato per me una sfida in senso stretto, perché non ero stata così conquistata dal volume precedente (che avevo trovato lento e farraginoso), ma me ne avevano parlato così bene che ho deciso di dare una seconda possibilità all'autrice (del resto, già quest'anno mi era capitato di rivalutare immensamente la Kuang al secondo tentativo...). In effetti, pur essendo un prequel, collocato circa cinquecento anni prima alle vicende del Priorato, a mio avviso si sente molto che è stato scritto dopo: lo stile di Samantha Shannon è maturato (o sono migliorati gli editor che hanno ripulito e sfrondato il romanzo). Resta un "mattone" di quasi mille pagine, ma la complessità è molto più accettabile e fruibile, tanto che non mi sono annoiata a leggerlo, riuscendo invece ad appassionarmi parecchio.
Stavolta si realizza pienamente un'epopea al femminile, dove l'elemento "femminista" non risiede solo nell'aver collocato tre donne come personaggi principali, ma, soprattutto, nell'averne conservato la loro natura, nel bene e nel male. Scrivere un fantasy con ragazze come eroine non vuol dire far far semplicemente cose da "eroi", l'autrice riesce a darcene un esempio vivido e riuscito: Tunuva, Sabran e Dumai sono a volte determinate a volte insicure, compiono errori, provano paura, invidia, diventano madri oppure amano, senza rinnegare se stesse. E sono coinvolte in intrighi politici e passionali, vivono il loro destino pur lambendo spesso e volentieri zone di moralità non del tutto specchiata, combattendo contro umani e bestie. Sono personaggi reali, concreti, e il lettore si avvince alle loro vite perché le sente vicine.
La Shannon non si risparmia; costruisce un mondo fatto di ben quattro zone, ciascuna con costumi, storie e mentalità diverse; scandisce lo scorrere del tempo, ci rivela leggende e origini di leggende (il volume è corredato di utili riepiloghi sui personaggi e sui vocaboli, nonché da mappe grafiche per orientarsi nei territori). Soprattutto, riesce a creare un intreccio di vite, in apparenza separate e senza contatto, che hanno però uno scopo, un punto di incontro, tra magia e realtà.
Non è fattibile condensare (neppure ci provo) migliaia di pagine di micro-vicende e filoni narrativi; lo stesso epilogo è quasi un romanzo a sé (!). Mi limito a rilevare che c'è un buon ritmo, con una tensione in crescendo nella parte finale. L'inizio e la parte centrale sono ancora piuttosto lenti, ma credo di aver compreso che lo stile dell'autrice risieda proprio in una rincorsa molto lunga e meditata prima del salto finale. Il mio consiglio: per quanto si tratti di un prequel, risulta più appagante (e chiaro) se letto dopo il volume del Priorato....more

Aggiungerei anche di lunga preparazione, perché i vari personaggi che avevamo conosciuto inizialmente all'interno del villaggio di Rokthan, sia gli abitanti originari che gli altri venuti da fuori, si sparpagliano e proseguono secondo filoni narrativi diversi.
Dopo che il male uscito dal bosco ha distrutto il villaggio e i pacificatori sembrano essersi temporaneamente allontanati, poco meno di un centinaio di sopravvissuti intraprendono un viaggio verso le terre confinanti per denunziare al mondo le vere intenzioni dell'Alto e delle Casate, anche se l'ostilità è tanta; a loro volta, Sorin e Frey (il mio filone preferito) si dirigono verso la terra natia di Mali per apprendere qualche segreto in più sulla deleomanzia, prima di scatenare la loro vendetta; Luin, infine, arriva da solo e per primo a Vanhorn, dove assiste finalmente alla meraviglia oscura dell'Alto. Ma anche dalla parte del nemico, Shai comincia a nutrire più di un dubbio sulla reale portata dei progetti portati avanti da suo padre e dalle Casate, perché il potere si fonda su una tale quantità di dolore, sopraffazione e sangue versato, che diventa sempre più difficile digerirlo.
Questo secondo volume si presenta più statico, ma perché ciascun personaggio deve sedimentare quanto ha scoperto in precedenza, e il trauma che ha comunque patito. Come dicevo, è una lenta, graduale preparazione: da un lato, la tempesta nera scatenata dalla rottura dei portali incombe, con la sua promessa di morte e distruzione, dall'altro, Sorin è sempre più impaziente di arrivare alla resa dei conti. E se per un po' tutto rallenta e si fa più introspettivo, ho adorato l'accelerazione finale, quando tutto, in poche pagine, viene sconvolto e si capovolge, lasciando il lettore, ancora una volta, attonito e bisognoso di sapere cosa accadrà dopo....more

Un epic fantasy italiano che mi è piaciuto moltissimo. Cominciamo dalla struttura narrativa particolare: anziché procedere lungo una semplice linea cronologica e con uno sguardo uniforme, Butini salta avanti e indietro nel tempo, affidandosi a più voci. Si parte da un giovane sguattero nella lurida taverna di un villaggio, che, in una una sera anonima, si trova a servire uno strano vecchio ciarliero che mischia verità a frasi folli; si passa poi ad alcuni cacciatori e a un gruppo di ragazzini, tutti alle prese con strani segni e scoperte inquietanti nella vicina foresta. L'unico fatto certo è che qualcosa sta arrivando a Rokthan, sinora un punto semisconosciuto sulla mappa geografica, mai interessato dalle trame politiche di Vanhorn e dell'Alto, il suo governante-tiranno. Sta per verificarsi qualcosa di temibile, di brutale, per cui l'intero villaggio innocente dovrà pagare, al contempo gruppo da offrire in sacrificio e testimone scomodo da eliminare.
E mentre le ombre si allungano e il vecchio Maestro inizia a rivelare frammenti d'incubo, il cacciatore Sorin, alla ricerca del figlio, rivive sprazzi del proprio strano passato. Perché molte pedine sono state già mosse da tempo e alcuni abitanti si trovano lì per uno scopo: porte nascoste potrebbero aprirsi e far passare cose da oltre il Velo, linee di sangue perdute potrebbero aver tramandato i poteri della deleomanzia.
Non è un autoconclusivo, ma il primo capitolo di una saga promettente. I personaggi non sono esclusivamente buoni o cattivi, gli scenari sono aperti, i colpi di scena non mancano e, udite udite, c'è un manipolo di donne più che interessanti, che potrebbero muoversi sia sul fronte nemico che alleato. Ho apprezzato molto il ritmo frenetico, la tensione, la malvagità strisciante e le scene di azione con guerrieri umani e no. Bello e ancora bello. Da provare....more

A me il primo libro è piaciuto (e a casa nostra i consensi sono stati unanimi), per cui non potevamo non gettarci sul secondo volume, per quanto in inglese, anche a fronte del fatto che, uscito a inizio a novembre, su Amazon ha superato qualcosa come 75.000 recensioni. Direi quindi che non eravamo i soli lettori curiosi...
Mi è piaciuto? Sì, se possibile ancor più del secondo. Molto più del secondo. In oltre 700 pagine (per fortuna, bevute sull'e-reader) la Yarros tira fuori dal cilindro sorprese divertenti e colpi di scena emozionanti.
Se pensavate che la nostra Violet, superato il primo anno, potesse tirare un sospiro di sollievo... proprio no. In molti la vogliono morta, e come sappiamo i nemici sono anche interni a Navarra, e ora più che mai anche il suo gruppo è in pericolo. Se pensavate che Xaden Riorson avesse esaurito la sua funzione di coprotagonista belloccio, sensuale, ambizioso e ambiguo, anche lì c'è ancora molto da apprendere (comprese succulente notizie sul suo passato: certo, lui non ha mai dichiarato che Violet fosse il suo primo amore...). Se pensavate che la famiglia Sorrengail avesse già dato, scoprirete che mamma generale e "siblings" sono fortemente intenzionati a lasciare il segno, nel Regno e forse nell'intero continente.
E i draghi? Non restano come contorno, ma si insinuano di prepotenza per dare consigli, criticare e venire in soccorso. Conclusioni: appartengo al team #Yarros e sono fortemente persuasa a completare questa quadrilogia (missione: possibilmente in inglese).

Il secondo episodio di questa saga vichinga, ispirata alla mitologia norrena. si presenta più massiccio, cruento e cupo rispetto al primo. Gli schieramenti si sono rivelati e l'intrigo progettato da generazioni è stato scoperto; gli dei sono risorti e vanno (di nuovo) in battaglia insieme a umani e mostri mitologici. Anche se talune divinità, come la dea-drago Lik-Rifa è al comando del proprio esercito, mentre altri vengono coinvolti grazie a sortilegi e catene. Anche i Fratelli di Sangue, da una parte, e gli Sterminatori, dall'altra, hanno dovuto decidere se prendere o meno le armi, chi per senso dell'onore, chi per tornaconto economico. E cominciano a contare le loro (molte) perdite.
Pur facendo qualche passo in avanti e portando taluni personaggi a un salto di qualità nella loro maturazione, resta un volume centrale e abbastanza di transizione: i nostri gruppi vanno di qua e vanno di là, si inseguono, perdendo pezzi per strada. E la grande resa dei conti resta rimandata: lo spargimento di sangue non è ancora sufficiente.
Tuttavia, sono 760 pagine che si leggono bene, con uno stile avvincente, intessuto da continui duelli, inseguimenti e scontri (ma anche tradimenti). I POV restano molteplici e il lettore può scegliere per chi parteggiare. Orka resta la mia guerriera preferita in assoluto: indomita, talmente determinata da sfiorare l'apparente insensibilità al mondo esterno; ha solo suo figlio nel cuore, eppure, pur brontolando, è sempre pronta a tendere la mano. Al contrario, detesto Elvar, viziata, brutale e fortunata, con tutte le mie forze, anche se temo che Gwynne la voglia far sopravvivere a qualunque costo (inspiegabile)... Sarà dura adesso aspettare il terzo, con tutte le svolte in ballo (e ricordarsi tutti gli intrecci)....more

4,5 - Ryan ritorna ora con questa cosetta (primo volume della trilogia L'ALLEANZA D'ACCIAIO) ed è un autentico tripudio, dove sfoggia tutto ciò per cui abbiamo imparato a seguirlo in ogni storia : eroi imperfetti, miseria e tradimenti, luce e tenebre, eroismo e fanatismo, battaglie all'alba con le picche puntate. L'epopea ci è narrata grazie ad Alwyn lo Scrivano, la cui vita, in apparenza modesta, s'intreccia indissolubile con le vicende della terra in cui vive.
Siamo vittime di un mondo reso sbagliato, e il suo essere sbagliato potrebbe essere corretto se solo ogni vittima vedesse la verità di questa cosa.
Alwyn parte male, in realtà: figlio di una prostituta, viene abbandonato alla sua morte nel bosco, destinato a morire di fame o sbranato; ma viene tratto in salvo da un capobanda, che lo addestra per divenire un abile furfante. In seguito, i rovesci del destino continuano: dagli anni di schiavitù in una miniera al reclutamento coatto in una milizia pseudo-fanatica, sempre con la morte alle calcagna, strani incontri e strani segnali di predestinazione, e una feroce sete di vendetta. Non voglio dilungarmi in dettagli, giacché questa lettura scorre giù come una sorsata di acqua fresca, appassionante e appagante. Dirò soltanto che ho adorato ogni pagina e che consiglio assolutamente la saga.

Questo è il volume conclusivo di una saga familiare appassionante. Quando ho iniziato a leggere la storia di una giovane maestra che attraversava gli Stati Uniti per andare a lavorare in un paesino di montagna in Colorado, non pensavo che mi sarei così affezionata agli abitanti di Emerson Pass. Invece, dagli inizi del '900 sino alla seconda guerra mondiale, la famiglia di lord Barnes è cresciuta e ne ha fatta di strada, con ben altre due generazioni (figli e nipoti), tra nascite, matrimoni, viaggi e lutti.
Nel frattempo, anche Emerson Pass è davvero cambiata: un paese che è divenuto cittadina, con impianti sportivi, attività commerciali, cittadini illustri. E restava l'ultima della nidiata Barnes da sistemare, quella Delphia che abbiamo visto poco e che però è sempre stata molto coccolata in famiglia. Dopo l'università anche lei torna a casa e si sposa velocemente con l'amico d'infanzia Jack, ragazzo sportivo, pieno di vita, allevatore di cavalli. Ma la guerra incombe, gli uomini partono per il fronte, e non c'è quasi il tempo per la luna di miele. Al suo rientro, Jack è un giovane a pezzi, nel fisico e nella mente; proprio allora incomincia la missione di Delphia, pronta a tutto per ricostruire un sogno andato in frantumi.
Come sempre, tanta dolcezza e buoni sentimenti; il clan non lascia soli e in quell'angolino montano non manca mai la speranza. Però è stato bello vedere i Barnes interagire ancora una volta, con più rughe ma anche molta saggezza, e la chiusura della storia si è venata di una certa malinconia. Mi piacerà ricordare questa saga con l'incoraggiamento della maestra Quinn, lo stesso sempre ripetuto in seguito: «Scendi dal treno, cara. La vita ti aspetta.»...more

4,5 Pur immaginando, sin dal volume precedente, chi fosse il probabile protagonista maschile di questo sesto volume della serie, la Byrne è riuscita nuovamente a sorprendermi e deliziarmi. Tutti questi volumi, per quanto abbiano un background comune, si sono rivelati tutti diversi, per storie e sviluppi, anche se gli incroci tra le varie coppie sono sempre emozionanti.
Stavolta ripartiamo dal famigerato carcere di Newgate, dove alcuni dei personaggi hanno trascorso anni di prigionia, abusi e puro terrore. Il ragazzo che si è appena fatto tatuare un drago sulla pelle non ha ancora l'inchiostro fresco, quando viene aggredito da un gruppo di guardie e ridotto in fin di vita. Di lui, gli altri compagni perderanno le tracce, mentre Ash, questo il suo nuovo nome, si risveglia in una casa sconosciuta, preda di un'amnesia e accudito da una dolcissima quattordicenne.
Anche Lorelai sopravvive, a suo modo, con un padre impotente e un fratello crudele e manesco, dedicandosi agli animali feriti e abbandonati in cui s'imbatte per caso. Un po' come Ash, il silenzioso tormentato Ash. Tuttavia, nonostante la simpatia reciproca e le promesse scambiate, i due si ritrovano separati per interi decenni, finché, vent'anni dopo, Lorelai viene bloccata giusto sulla soglia del sagrato, in procinto di sposare un altro.
Lei non la prende benissimo, la cognata neppure. E poi il cambiamento di vita è troppo brusco, da un'esistenza da zitella nell'oblio a una nuova avventura a bordo di una nave di pirati. Ma la Byrne ci ha abituati a regalarci giovani donne che sembrano fragili solo in apparenza, per cui neppure Lorelai delude con la sua tenacia e speranza. Su tutti, i Caskey sono una sorta di "nobilità" locale, finché le loro vite sono sconvolte da una violenta inondazione (la piena) e dalla comparsa di una donna, Elinor Dammert, che sembra arrivare dal nulla. O dal fiume? A metà tra un horror storico e una serie di narrativa con venature fantasy, questo primo volume sorprende per rivelare da subito il personaggio malvagio, ma anche per fregarsene di regole logiche o per fornire spiegazioni degli eventi. Avevo il ricordo di un vecchio volume di mio papà, che poi ho smarrito nei traslochi con mio grande rimorso. Tutto questo per spiegare perché mi sono ritrovata a leggere i primi tre romanzi della saga soltanto ora. In effetti, ancora mi chiedo come ho fatto a non conoscerla prima... Iniziare NIGHTRUNNER per me è stato spalancare una porta su un universo complesso e affascinante. Ci sono cascata dentro di brutto, centellinandomi le 1620 pagine del cartaceo, sera dopo sera, e usando un cuscino come leggio (pesa, ragazzi, pesa).
FORTUNA NELL'OMBRA si apre nell'imminenza di una guerra. I due regni di Skala e Plenimar sono nemici storici, ma mentre il primo popolo si caratterizza per essere dedito al commercio e allo sviluppo di una magia "bianca", oltre che essere governato da una dinastia di regine, quella di Plenimar è gente crudele e sanguinaria, misogina e seguace di sacrifici e negromanzia. Alec di Kerry è un giovane arciere orfano che vive molto più a nord, lontano, e ritiene di non essere coinvolto nel conflitto. Finché non viene imprigionato e salvato da uno strano individuo, un giovane bellissimo quanto misterioso, Seregil di Rhíminee, ora menestrello eccentrico, ora spia e ladro, ora ricognitore e rappresentante, in esilio, di un popolo non umano e secolare, che in passato si è mescolato agli uomini mentre nel presente preferisce restarsene in un isolamento neutrale quanto fragile.
I due iniziano ben presto a collaborare nel nome di Skala, con il sostegno del mago Nysander e del guerriero Micum. Ma il loro è un rapporto complicato fin dall'inizio, perché la vita dei mortali Tirfaie (gli umani) è veloce e fuggevole, mentre la ruota della Storia procede con tempi molto più lenti, e ciascuno dei due nasconde più di un segreto, come scopriremo in IL BUIO IN AGGUATO e LUNA DI CONGIURA.
Il tomo contiene i primi tre libri della serie, molte pagine, ma anche troppo poche. Questo è uno di quei libri dove le descrizioni sono così vivide che ti pare di essere lì con loro, tra foreste, ghiaccio, vita cittadina, mercati e campi di battaglia. Alla fine, e nonostante l'aggiunta dei racconti, ho chiuso con la netta sensazione di una sorta di perdita. Sino alla prossima avventura, Alec e Seregil mi mancheranno. La Flewelling è femminista e supporta i diritti QLGBT. Tutto questo si vede nella sua opera, dove le donne sono regine e guerriere indomite, e dove i suoi personaggi principali hanno una sessualità fluida, non ristretta tra canoni rigidi. Inutile dire che adoro il suo stile, attento a costumi, aspetti religiosi, bellici e sociali, e spero di proseguire la serie al più presto (dita incrociate per la sua pubblicazione).

Se all'inizio pensavo che con l'esaurirsi dei fratelli la serie sarebbe andata incontro a noia e perdita d'interesse, mi sono dovuta comunque ricredere. Al momento, non ne sono ancora stanca. La Beverley è riuscita sinora a scovare cugini, amici e personaggi in qualche modo legati alla famiglia (che, peraltro, ed è questo il bello, appare e riappare, come una sorta di zona di conforto, una copertina calda che coccola il lettore).
Qui, ad esempio, troviamo un nobile inglese che sta rientrando in patria, sotto copertura, e che s'imbatte in una suora "papista" (ovvero cattolica) decisa a recarsi anche lei in Inghilterra per ritrovare le proprie origini familiari. Nessuno dei due, ovviamente, si spinge a rivelare tutti i propri segreti all'altro: così Petra, la piccola pietra, preferisce farsi passare per una falsa suora, un'avventuriera, forse una spia, mentre Robin, il pettirosso, si ritaglia il ruolo del ricco annoiato, che cerca distrazioni e magari una tresca amorosa con la ragazza a cui offre protezione e mezzi di trasporto.
Il loro non è proprio un rientro tranquillo, tra agguati, tentativi di rapina e sequestro, duelli a fil di spada, briganti, contrabbandieri, sicari e altri viaggiatori piuttosto invadenti. Però entrambi riescono a mettere in mostra le proprie doti d'astuzia e a salvarsi a vicenda più volte, riuscendo a raggiungere i loro obiettivi nonostante l'attrazione.
Nel complesso un libro vivace, con due protagonisti simpatici, ciascuno a suo modo caparbio nel non guardarsi indietro e nel non arrendersi di fronte alle delusioni. C'è un sottile gioco di seduzione, anche perché il conte è piuttosto malandrino, ma Petra riesce a tenergli testa, grazie anche a un carattere forte e determinato. Se poi alla trama aggiungete il ritorno di Rothgar, con una comparsa breve, ma fondamentale, capirete perché ho apprezzato la lettura....more

4,5 - Founders è una delle saghe recenti che ho trovato più innovative, grazie all'idea dell'istorazione: immaginate un particolare tipo di magia, che in realtà è più scienza, nel senso che gli uomini hanno imparato attraverso i secoli a leggere la realtà come se fosse fatta di codici informatici (fasci e fasci di codici), arrivando quindi a scrivere stringhe in grado di manipolarla e modificarla.
Se appartenete alla mia generazione, forse ricorderete ancora i programmi Dos e la fatica di dover digitare tutti i comandi per impartire anche una semplice operazione al nostro computer di casa. Ebbene, Tevanne assomiglia molto a una laguna veneziana medievale, con la città attraversata da canali e divisa in campi rivali, e i territori oltremare con cui commerciare o combattere. Ma è una città che si fonda anche su tutte le invenzioni che prendono vita grazie alle stringhe, dove poche fonderie custodiscono gelosamente dizionari e segreti, e lo spionaggio industriale è piuttosto intenso.
Il secondo volume inizia dopo che Sancia, ladra con un passato da schiava, e la sua compagnia improvvisata (Orso, Gregor e Berenice) hanno dato l'assalto alla Montagna e al tesoro della dei Candiano. Oltre al tesoro, hanno portato alla luce anche una serie di rivelazioni terribili su Tevanne e su loro stessi. Tutti devono ancora abituarsi all'idea, ma i nemici non aspettano. Le altre famiglie continuano a tramare, Ophelia Dandolo in particolare, e sembra sempre più credibile che Crasede Magno, il più potente tra le divinità ascese (gli Antichi inventori finirono per trasformarsi in Dei loro stessi) possa tornare e portare a termine il suo piano di distruzione del mondo.
Scenari cupi, atmosfere di attesa, lotta e violenza, in un crescendo in cui tutte le svolte della vicenda non sono per nulla scontate o prevedibili. L'ho trovato lievemente inferiore al primo (ma soltanto per la parte relativa all'istoriazione: l'autore è rigoroso, per cui ci tiene a dare spiegazioni tecniche coerenti per ogni passaggio), ma comunque sempre parecchio godibile. Impressione generale: forse il materiale narrativo era perfetto per una dilogia, mentre qui la storia viene allungata, ma staremo a vedere....more

Questa è una saga #highfantasy che avevo lasciato indietro (diciamo che avevo bisogno di staccare dagli angeli caduti di Gwynne), ma che ho recuperato per poter leggere il secondo volume. E per fortuna: perché l'ho trovata molto godibile, un dark fantasy incentrato sulla mitologia scandinavo-norrena (con tribù vichinghe in lotta tra loro), un romanzo di quelli che ti diverti a leggere la sera, capitolo dopo capitolo, e ti passa il sonno per la curiosità.
Il punto di forza è senza dubbio la presenza di tanti personaggi diversi che, per un motivo o per l'altro, si trovano a raggiungere per strade alternative lo stesso terribile luogo (il Grande Frassino) dove, all'inizio dei tempi, sono cadute le divinità antiche, da Snaka il serpente a Lik-Rifa. A volte la coesistenza di tanti POV può stordire o confondere, invece qui consente al lettore di assistere al crescendo dell'intrigo da angolazioni diverse (e non tutti i POV sono di personaggi positivi), con un corrispondente aumento di tensione. A Vigrid tante piccole città stato, con poteri basati sui commerci (eufemismo per frequenti razzie e pirateria) e schiavitù (ma i collari vengono posti sia agli uomini che ai mutaforma, discendenti degli antichi dei), si fronteggiano per rivalità rimaste sotterranee per secoli, finché qualcuno dice di osare di più.
Fattorie vengono attaccate, bambini vengono rapiti e scompaiono, antichi manufatti sono cercati e riportati alla luce. Finché due squadre di mercenari, i Fratelli di Sangue e gli Sterminatori, si ritrovano coinvolte e sono costrette a indagare a fondo il problema. Battaglie, duelli, poca pietà, tanta cattiveria. Non un fantasy per palati sensibili: però non ci si annoia.

L'aspetto positivo della nuova edizione integrale della trilogia GRACELING REALM è che sono finalmente riuscita a leggere per intero una saga di cui aL'aspetto positivo della nuova edizione integrale della trilogia GRACELING REALM è che sono finalmente riuscita a leggere per intero una saga di cui avevo sentito parlare molto e che restava da anni nella lista dei libri "da recuperare" (tanto più che ne ho smaltiti tre in un colpo solo).
L'aspetto meno positivo è che non mi capacito di come questi libri abbiano potuto avere così tanto successo: le storie sono confuse e slegate tra loro (si ha la continua impressione che l'autrice avesse più canovacci nel cassetto e, visto il riscontro del primo libro, abbia deciso di inserire a forza gli altri due, trovando degli elementi di unione...); lo stile è elementare, sempre raccontato, con personaggi monodimensionali e prevedibili; non ci sono colpi di scena, se non una certa insistenza nell'indulgere in descrizioni cruente/splatter che, forse, dovrebbero aggiungere vivacità e adrenalina ai fatti, ma finiscono solo per rendere la lettura inadatta a un pubblico dodicenne (gli adulti sono già svenuti da tempo per noia...).
L'unico punto interessante resta Bitterblue, perchè ho gradito recuperare almeno questo personaggio e vederne l'evoluzione/maturazione, otto anni dopo gli eventi del primo libro. E anche perchè, ammettiamolo, ero molto curiosa di capire cosa potessero avere poi in comune Katjie-Fire-Bitterblue alla fine.
Ma in realtà il finale non è un vero finale, se non una ulteriore spiegazione di cose già accadute e note ai lettori: direi che si avverte molto l'assenza di un "cattivo" vivo nella trama. Che senso ha continuare a recriminare su qualcuno già sconfitto e autoflagellarsi sul male già commesso? Bitterblue insiste per far ricordare chi ha intorno a sé, girando il coltello in ferite fresche; certo, è un suo diritto apprendere la verità sul passato e sulla famiglia, anche per poter governare il regno in piena consapevolezza. Però dimostra una certa propensione sadica (genetica, direi) che mi è parsa eccessiva.
La verità è che non sono riuscita a trovare un senso logico nella narrazione dei tre libri e uno scopo vero e proprio a questo terzo volume (però poi ho visto che c'è un seguito - Winterkeep - quindi forse è un ponte verso uno sbocco futuro?). ...more
Se questo era uno dei volumi che più attendevo quest'anno, devo anche dire che, nell'insieme della trilogia, è quello che mi ha coinvolto meno. Oggettivamente, non posso fare una colpa a una caduta di ritmo o di stile: l'ambientazione immaginata resta notevole, i colpi di scena si susseguono in modo implacabile, si soffre parecchio prima di arrivare al finale, le emozioni sono contrastanti e incerte, anche quando mancano poche pagine.
Tuttavia: vi siete mai trovati così immersi in una vicenda, da farvi mille aspettative su certe evoluzioni, e poi scoprire, leggendo, che niente, ma proprio NIENTE va nel verso giusto? Senza rivelare nulla, posso solo dire che questo terzo capitolo è stata una specie di tappeto volante, gettato a velocità pazzesca e dritto a schiantarsi nel mezzo del cuore.
La Chakraborty adotta una specie di ripartizione buoni/cattivi netta e senza sconti: da una parte, chi aveva scelto di premiare, viene portato in trionfo all'assurdo (se già Nahri mi stava antipatica, qui diventa una specie di eroina-santa guaritrice-leader del suo popolo; non parliamo di Ali perfettino e noioso); dall'altra, chi si trovava in una zona d'ombra già prima, viene trasformato in malvagio, senza se e senza ma, più una macchietta folle che reale antagonista con uno spessore plausibile.
E, più di tutto, non posso perdonare il trattamento narrativo riservato a Dara. Con lui l'autrice si comporta un po' come a suo tempo la Maas fece con Chaol: un personaggio notevole, simpatico e sfaccettato, che era stato scelto in primis per avere un ruolo centrale e a cui viene dato una specie di benservito per una modifica di scelte di sviluppo. Lo ammetto: ho amato questa serie proprio per Dara, il finale del primo libro mi aveva tenuto trepidante sulla sua sorte, nel secondo avevo pazientato, nel terzo sono rimasta abbastanza un po' così.
La stessa Chakraborty deve essersene accorta (oppure deve aver percepito il malumore di una parte di lettori), perchè nel suo sito offre un FINALE ALTERNATIVO, proprio dedicato a lui.
