so i've just read the summary of this book on goodreads and realised half the things that made me so mad in thisvery solid 2 stars rant coming through.
so i've just read the summary of this book on goodreads and realised half the things that made me so mad in this book were obvious enough to be written on the back of the book- but in my defence, all i did was download it and start reading... but what motivated me? what divine source gave me the revelation to go ahead and commence this journey? WHY DID I DECIDE TO READ THIS BOOK?
WELLL BOOKTOK. decided to tell me that this book is, "just like letters to the lost, maybe even better" so naturally i got excited and all hyped up, i looked through the many goodreads ratings all saying it was cute and fluffy and whatever 5 stars shit reviewers gush about. my spirits rising, i just stopped, dropped and rolled out of studying for my english midterms (and hopelessly tried to convince myself that reading a novel would give me enough practice for the narratives i had to write the next day)- the only thing i cared about though, was reading this book. but from the first page i just knew. I JUST KNEW, that whoever compared this to lttl was either a complete psycopath or was under influence of something very miserable- this book is not bad but do not be so cruel and ignorant to identify it with one of the best books written in history maybe gonna go exorcise myself and read lttl after this review.
first let's talk about, the plot mink and alex are online friends but totallyy made for each other!! i mean why wouldn't you decide your future husband over the criteria of 'if he's a total film nerd' and nice and funny on textt?!! i mean, no it OBVIOUSLY does not matter that he could be a total creep, or 50 years old and suffering from a mid life crisis yea?? or starting to get bald. has grandchildren. maybe a lorry and a farm and twenty pigs. my imagination is going anywhere and everywhere rn as you can see BUT HOW DID THIS GIRL (her real name is bailey) WHO'S SEVENTEEN YEARS OLD NEVER CONSIDER ALL THIS BEFORE SETTING OFF AND UIFSFYHUIAWOY
'Alex' lives on the west coast, a town in california with weird weather and film festivals, surfer dudes and coincidentally bailey's dad!!! alex keeps trying to get 'mink' to come to his town to visit her dad [and yes, he knows her dad lives there o-o] from where she lives in DC with her mom and stepdad who are having issuesssss HAHA OBVIOUSLY she runs away and decides to MOVE in with her dad. she doesn't tell alex this small detail bc FIRST- she wants to find him ✨✨
she does this, by getting a map of the town and trying to find a STRAY CAT alex is always around- apparently so, in text. she hangs on to this hope while getting a summer job in a museum with this hotty hunky asshole security guard who keeps bullying her but she is weirdly attracted to him cuz curiosity and hate turn into something over time.
NOW IF i were a different person, i might actually not-mind this whole plot... BUT SERIOUSLY??? bear in mind, this was compared to LETTERS TO THE LOST omg i am losing my sanity all over again now bailey and hunky bully are besties bc this absolute sunshine colleague of bailey gave her a ted talk about hotty's family issues and consequently- heartthrob bully massively transforms into Mr Darcy 2.0 and they talk about all sorts of things like the weather and surfing
wow isn't your heart fluttering?!! i know right? me too. they always have these hart-to-heart conversations about how much their lives suck but then DO NOT REALISE what is in front of them for the whole book. like when you watched homecoming you knew spider man wouldn't die cuz his contract hadn't ended yet ...more
