There were good bones to the story but the pace kept stalling out and the climax felt flat. There never felt like any real stakes. Pun intended. I like the world Briggs has put together and will definitely read the next novel to see if she gets into a better groove.
All in all, I would recommend this book to fans of urban fantasy. It has a serial killing vampire-demon, ghosts, werewolves on the prowl, and a coyote-walker coming into her own as she begins to understand her own powers....more

Fae have revealed their existence to the humans, which isn't going as well as they'd hoped. The werewolf clans and vampire seethes are staying quiet for the time being. The main character is a walker, a coyote shifter, who runs her own auto body shop. There's a fun mystery at the heart of the story. It's well worth the read.

I did have some eye rolling and groaning at times. The whole these are the rules we live by and the consequences are severe for breaking them but oops look at me I just broke them because I don't care and the people who enforce the rules giggle that silly old me broke the rules. It's groan worthy. That and the he's one of the most powerful beings in North America, but oops he got suckers by the vamps and knocked out and little old me who is ever so weak bested the entire seethe. Eye roll worthy.
Samuel can kiss my ass. He's a pedo who preyed on a 16 year old and for that he'll never be a character I like. I actually hope the author kills him off in a totally gruesome pathetic way.
That said. I really liked the book. Those were just nit picky parts that I didn't care for. I definitely want to see what happens next for Mercy, Stefan, Zee, and Warren. ...more

He is an excellent writer with a solid body of work. Although I think Hellfire Club is a good novel, it wasn't what I expected. I never expected to give one of his books 2.5 stars. Chiefly, I have three complaints about this one.
1) Why the book is called Hellfire Club is beyond me. The Hellfire Club barely gets mentioned and is not integral to the plot in any way.
2) I love Straub's stories because there is typically a supernatural element present in them that he scares me with. There is NOTHING supernatural in this story. It falls somewhere between thriller and mystery.
3) Rape. Completely unnecessary to the plot or the character development and graphic. I don't ever want to read a graphic rape scene. Nora didn't deserve that weak-handed excuse for "character development." Anything in a story should further the plot. The rape only managed to further stroke dreams for addle-brained incels. I would've been far more interested if there was torture than the multiple rapes of different women.
With that out of the way. The mystery at the heart of this book, and the lead Nora, make it a decent read. I would never recommend anyone read this. There are far better Straub works to spend your time in.
4) Yeah, okay, I said there, but there are four. What in the world did that cover possibly have to do with this book?...more
