Even though I don't like dogs I found it really interesting to read a book from a dog's perspective. I also found Woolf's link to the subordination of dogs in society being similar to society's subordination of women.
Woolf is suggesting the subordination dehumanises women so much that in hierarchal stakes, they become like dogs....more

I've decided to give this book four stars based on the sheer fact this is based on a true story. This actually happened. I suppose I'm trying to distance myself from the context I am reading it in because I remember reading this thinking 1000 followers is nothing, but I guess this was written in the days before social media. Dan also appeared a little arrogant to me, but overall I thought this was a good read. My sociology teacher recommended this book to me, so I would highly recommend you should read this book too if you study sociology....more
Everyone I know loathed the first book but then loved the sequels. I did the opposite. I don't know, I think my problem with the series was the fact the books were more about character development rather than having a fun, exciting plot. And if that rocks your boat good for you but I prefer books that have an equal emphasis on intriguing plots and storylines as well as an emphasis on character development.
I think that's why I loved the Harry Potter series and the Chaos Walking series so much, because there was that equal emphasis on plot and characters. Both had unique, exciting plots with unique interesting characters.
I guess reading is extremely subjective but I felt the plot was generic, the ending was a bit too happy and there was too much emphasis on the characters rather than the plot itself, so much to the point where I couldn't understand what was going on.
The prodigy storyline being abandoned is where I personally felt the real fault in the series lay. I thought the prodigy storyline where a society was built upon an intellectual hierarchy was a really unique idea. It suggests that meritocracy exists, leading the reader to question whether it does or not, especially when Day was concerned. That engaged me. But once Lu lost that idea, I became lost. I'm sorry....more
