Even though I don't like dogs I found it really interesting to read a book from a dog's perspective. I also found Woolf's link to the subordination of dogs in society being similar to society's subordination of women.
Woolf is suggesting the subordination dehumanises women so much that in hierarchal stakes, they become like dogs....more

This book intrigued me, but at the same time really disturbed me.
I was disturbed by the fact Offred was literally just a sex object in this book. I through the term objectification out a lot, but objectification doesn't even come close to the way Offred was treated in this book. I was disturbed by the fact this was a civil woman who'd had a normal life previously, who just decided to accept her incarceration and become a breeding machine. There was no strong will to escape, she wanted to escape, but she never acted upon this.
I'm just speechless, I really don't know how to articulate my feelings towards this book....more

I've decided to give this book four stars based on the sheer fact this is based on a true story. This actually happened. I suppose I'm trying to distance myself from the context I am reading it in because I remember reading this thinking 1000 followers is nothing, but I guess this was written in the days before social media. Dan also appeared a little arrogant to me, but overall I thought this was a good read. My sociology teacher recommended this book to me, so I would highly recommend you should read this book too if you study sociology....more

ThMy teacher recommended I read this book for a teenage reviewing challenge, and I'm really glad she did because I really ended up enjoying this book.
This book is incredibly underrated, and I feel this book is a lot better than some other books I've read that have been set in Nazi Germany. This was also one of the first young adult books I ever read and I think the fact it was a young adult book made it even better, because this book was able to explore how impressionable teenagers in Nazi Germany were, and how vulnerable they were to influences such as the government, the Hitler Youth, and people's attitudes towards anti-Semitism in general.
The story features Peter, a lovely Aryan boy, who looks like he could be the poster child for the Hitler Youth. After his parents die, he is sent to live with an awful, prominent German family. The reason why I found them awful was because they were incredibly miserable and stuck up.
I don't want to say too much more, because I may end up giving the plot away, but read this book for yourselves, it's a good read I promise. It's got quite a good plot twist at the end, which I personally didn't see coming, but I guess it's all down to interpretation so check this book out for yourselves.
