Il genere del racconto è incompreso, non è certamente immersivo come quello del romanzo, ma regala intuizioni, come sottili fenditure i racconti aprono possibilità. In questi Shirley Jackson gioca con i lati oscuri che si nascondono nella normalità, rende manifeste le ossessioni e mostra alla luce del giorno gli incubi. Insomma, era una lettura inevitabile e questa volta le mie aspettative non sono state deluse. Anzi. Una raccolta questa che nasce e si declina attorno ad un concetto chiave: quello del desiderio, il principio di ogni rapporto umano, forse il principio stesso di ogni cosa. L’espressione più conosciuta del desiderio è il sesso, che Kristen Roupenian analizza e scompone senza mai banalizzarlo, nel racconto “Cat person” è presente una fortissima ambiguità sulla stessa veloce esperienza interpersonale e sessuale, ambiguità che ha diviso i pareri e che ha reso così “famoso” il racconto; conosciamo poi attraverso una lunga regressione la psicologia che sta dietro ad un uomo frustrato in “Bravo ragazzo”; vediamo le conseguenza di spingersi troppo oltre nel racconto iniziale “Ragazzaccio”. Sesso, desiderio, corpo... il corpo è fortemente presente nella raccolta, è il mezzo con cui entriamo in contatto con l’altro, con cui sentiamo, così come è presente un occhio privilegiato verso la fase in cui queste sensazione sono amplificate: i primi anni dell’adolescenza, bellissimo il racconto “Look at your game, girl” che riesce a condensare in poche pagine la complessità della scoperta del male negli altri e dell’oscurità in se stessi. Molto racconti sono espressamente realistici, ma la ricchezza della raccolta consiste nello spingersi oltre e nel mostrare come la fantasia e l’irrazionalità riescano a spiegare allo stesso modo e forse persino meglio la psicologia dell’essere umano. Prendono così forma le fantasie, i sogni, i desideri nascosti (come nel geniale “Non avere paura”), ma non solo: si manifestano gli incubi, ed è l’orrore che fa da filo conduttore a diversi racconti: fa capolino in “La prova dei fiammiferi” sotto forma di un parassita del corpo, “Sardine” vede manifestarsi un raccapricciante desiderio di compleanno, o “Lo specchio, il secchio, e il vecchio femore” che è forse il più angosciante dell’intera raccolta. Ogni racconto gronda intensità, genialità, l’autrice non ha paura di osare, di spingersi sempre più a fondo, sempre più in là. Elementi cardine quindi i rapporti tra uomo e donna, il sesso, il corpo, la crescita, le fantasie, la paura e il desiderio, in ogni sua forma. Veramente un’autrice con una fortissima impronta personale sia nelle tematiche che nello stile, asciutto, concreto, senza una parola fuori posto. È esattamente questa la sensazione che si ha leggendo Paranoia, c’è Shirley nascosta fra le pagine, dai quattro racconti (adesso ve ne parlo) ai pezzi più personali in cui prende in giro il marito, maledice i vicini o ci presenta le manie dei suoi figli. Uuna donna ironica, cinica...diversa, che dopo una giornata passata a lavare piatti e ad accompagnare i figli a scuola si sedeva davanti alla macchina da scrivere e riusciva a dare vita alle paure più ancestrali degli uomini, incarnando nei suoi personaggi i lati nascosti ed oscuri dell’esistenza. I racconti contenuti all’interno del libro non sono gotici, ne horror, ma possono essere ed effettivamente risultano ben più spaventosi, perché mettono di fronte il lettore ad istanze personali, chiamiamole inconscie, verità, timori, che le pagine riescono a scoprire e a smascherare. Sottilmente psicologici, i racconti sono ricchi di “profondità e immaginazione”, metafore, attraverso le quali ci spogliamo dalle paure, le guardiamo dritte negli occhi e chissà, magari riusciamo a passare oltre, non parlo solo di questo libro, ma di tutto quello che ha scritto Shirley Jackson. Uno dei romanzi più riusciti che abbia mai letto, Rebecca la prima moglie è quasi interamente ambientato nella storica dimora inglese di Manderley. MaUno dei romanzi più riusciti che abbia mai letto, Rebecca la prima moglie è quasi interamente ambientato nella storica dimora inglese di Manderley. Manderley che diventa protagonista della storia insieme ad un altro personaggio che, pur non essendoci più, è reale e presente in ogni pagina, nei sussurri della servitù, nella calligrafia allungata delle lettere, nei ricordi di chi la conosceva: Rebecca, la prima moglie, una donna così affascinate, magnetica, bellissima, perfetta, un’idea difficile con cui competere per la “nuova moglie”, colei che non verrà invece mai nominata, che però è il filtro con cui noi vediamo tutto e conosciamo le vicende. Grazie a questo astuto meccanismo narrativo ci immedesimiamo completamente nella storia e nella timida protagonista scoprendo giorno dopo giorno qualcosa in più su Rebecca e la sua misteriosa morte, le apparenze (come sempre) ingannano e saremo costretti a ritornare sulle nostre impressioni iniziali, nulla sarà certo fino alla fine del libro. Bellissima la cadenza del racconto, una narrazione metodica in cui il tempo della storia praticamente coincide con il tempo della vicenda, nessun salto temporale, permettendo così un’immedesimazione fortissima, quasi un resoconto, un diario giornaliero, che incalza verso la fine e verso lo sciogliersi dei nodi. Un’ottima combinazione di romanzo gotico, noir, dalle tinte romantiche, peccato per alcuni cliché e banalità sparsi qua e là, ma perdonabili nell’insieme....more
Ho adorato l'atmosfera che pervade il racconto: molto gotica, con diversi riferimenti alle fiabe, alla stregoneria, a rituali magici e ad incantesimi di protezione. È una storia vista dal punto di vista delle "streghe" dei "cattivi", due sorelle morbosamente attaccate, che l'autrice ci fa intuire dall'inizio essere colpevoli di aver avvelenato la famiglia a pranzo....inquietante no?Ma è solo uno dei tanti fatti quantomeno strani o bizzarri che troverete dentro al romanzo. Non è solo un libro di paura, è molto di più...perché il male non è ciò che sembra e chi è veramente malvagio sono gli estranei, gli altri..la gente del paese che con la loro diffidenza e cattiveria contribuiranno alla vera emarginazione delle sue sorelle. Questo romanzo non mi ha più abbandonata e nel tempo mi ha veramente segnata, il suo ricordo, la sua storia, la sua unicità ne hanno fatto uno dei miei libri preferiti in assoluto, a distanza lo rileggo ed ecco il mio pensiero:
Abbiamo sempre vissuto nel castello è un libro a cui sono molto legata, la prima cosa di cui mi sono innamorata è l’atmosfera in cui è immerso: misteriosa, come una vecchi storia di Halloween; Abbiamo sempre vissuto nel castello è una storia di streghe, di paura e isolamento, una denuncia contro i pregiudizi, ed è anche un racconto femminista e di sorellanza. È un libro difficile perché non segue nessuno schema ne vuole compiacere il lettore, si svolge nello stesso luogo con pochi personaggi, ma la capacità di incidere su più livelli in chi legge è unica e lo rende indimenticabile, io l’ho già riletto due volte e continuerò a farlo. La Jackson come sempre farcisce il racconto di dialoghi illogici, parole ripetute, incantesimi, creature, luoghi magici, come "abbiamo sempre vissuto nel castello" anche qua c'è il tema dell'esclusione, dei rapporti di amicizia morbosi, e sopratutto della malattia mentale...ma a differenza dell'altro questo libro è pieno di tristezza, solitudine, malinconia. La scrittrice è molto abile nel descrivere il lento distacco dal reale verso la pazzia che ha la protagonista, un libro unico nel suo genere, molto oscuro....more

È stato definito uno dei grandi romanzi americani, se non “il Grande Romanzo Americano”, e perché no? It parla dei grandi mali che ancora oggi affliggono l’America: razzismo, omofobia, violenza, sessismo... comportamenti che nascono dalla paura, paura di cui It si nutre e con cui prospera; il messaggio più forte che porterò con me da questa lettura è che la storia, il passato, sono fatti di una matrice oscura, che riemerge nel presente e con cui siamo costretti a fare i conti, ma che in qualche modo è possibile sconfiggere o almeno superare. Le tematiche di It sono tantissime e pur essendo un romanzo di genere, oltrepassa questa definizione per abbracciare qualcosa di indefinibile... e questo è uno dei segreti della miglior letteratura. È l’ultima volta però che leggo Stephen King, per quanto ami le atmosfere e le idee dei suoi romanzi non riesco proprio ad apprezzare la scrittura, peccato, per fortuna c’è sempre la mia amata Shirley Jackson ...more
È stata un’esperienza magnetica; posso tranquillamente definire questo libro “un’opera d’arte”, quando l’ho finito sono rimasta a pensare parecchio, cÈ stata un’esperienza magnetica; posso tranquillamente definire questo libro “un’opera d’arte”, quando l’ho finito sono rimasta a pensare parecchio, cercando d’interpretare cos’avevo letto, il suo significato ... l’insondabile enigma che questo romanzo vuole essere. Un libro che prima di tutto ci parla del tema finzione/realtà, e lo fa incredibilmente bene: è come se fosse diviso in due parti, due possibili verità o due possibili menzogne, l’una esclude l’altra ma non è possibile sapere quale sia vera e quel no, un bellissimo gioco di specchi che percorre tutta la narrazione. Oltre a questo impianto artistico Trilogia della città di k. è prima di tutto un coraggioso racconto sulla guerra, la povertà, l’oppressione, in cui tutto è sullo stesso piano; lo stile monocorde dona ad ogni avvenimento la stessa importanza, lo scopo non è commuovere ma far conoscere, comunicare. Concludo dandovi una piccola curiosità: i libri sono stati pubblicati ognuno a circa tre anni di distanza e nell’Edizione Einaudi ogni “sezione” è tradotta da un traduttore diverso, tre racconti separati ma che necessitano l’uno dell’altro per essere una vera e propria opera di grandissimo valore letterario e umano. ...more

Pubblicato nel 1898, giro di vite è uno dei perfetti esempi del genere gotico. Una giovane istitutrice, mentre si occupa di due bambini così apparentemente angelici, entrerà in contatto con delle misteriose apparizioni. I libro è squisitamente classico, sia nelle atmosfere, sia nello stile, mantenendo una facilità di lettura sorprendente. L'inquietudine del romanzo è data, più che dalla presenza dei fantasmi, dall'ambiguità della loro vera esistenza, rimarrà infatti l'incertezza se essi siano delle proiezioni della protagonista (proiezioni di desideri repressi, inibizioni) o se invece siano vere e proprie entità. Le interpretazioni del libro sono moltissime e sta a voi dare la vostra, a me è comunque piaciuto moltissimo....more
