Beyond Black (Picador, 2006) is mainly about the dead haunting the living, but it’s not in the way they go into the corners in dark and open creaking doors, there are no ghosts scaring the shit out of people as we see in horror films. The dead in Beyond Black is more like a mobbing boss, someone we can’t get rid of – we’re bound to. The way Mantel presents us the horror of facing the dead beyond death is so elegant, so different, so malicious and gritty.
This is a sad book, it won’t provide entertainment and fun, but it’s magically addictive and the writing is so beautiful. Dark, funny and witty. The scenes where mediums traded with audiences were the best and most enjoyable parts for me. And of course the parts about Lady Di.

My name is Mary Katherine Blackwood. I am eighteen years old, and I live with my sister Constance. I have often thought that with any luck at all, I could have been born a werewolf, because the two middle fingers on both my hands are the same length, but I have had to be content with what I had. I dislike washing myself, and dogs, and noise. I like my sister Constance, and Richard Plantagenet, and Amanita phalloides, the death-cup mushroom. Everyone else in our family is dead.
Now that's a "hook in the eye" of an opening paragraph. This book has the best opening ever. I absolutely love this and every time I read it it gives me goosebumps. One of my favourite all-time reads, and Jackson is in my favourite all-time writers.
This is a book you can never forget, no matter how many years pass after you read it. You'll carry Merricat with you. The book cover, or the name will peek at you and you'll shiver. The writing is pure and beautiful. Like threading spiderwebs from silver, Jackson constructs her characters and novel with such a talent. There are few writers that can compete with her atmosphere creating.
This is the story of Merricat, and the remains of her and her sister's life after a devastating series of events. You should read it.
However beware, Jackson's work is not delightful reads. If you haven't read from her before, Try the short story, Lottery- it could be found for free, online. If you like it, then get this book in your hands!...more

This book is the most elegant work of fiction I have ever read (alongside with Master and Margarita) and one of my favourite reads ever. It opens with a tragedy, by Iris's narration:
Ten days after the war ended, my sister drove a car off the bridge.
The rest of the book is an amazing journey until we find out why Iris's younger sister, Laura, drove off the bridge. There are different parts and layers in the novel and the structuring is so brilliant I am sure there must be wannabe authors out there trying to do the same thing. Not only multiple story lines, but a novel inside the novel. There are poetic scenes, hard truths, sadness, feminism, hope and hopelessness in it. It has been more than 5 years since I've read it but I still feel this book like I've read it yesterday.
Margaret Atwood is one of the greatest literary talents alive, she is a legend. I think she's became quite popular thanks to Handmaid's Tale but I think her masterpiece is The Blind Assassin. You'll never regret reading this book....more
