I really think if I had had one or two months more of unemployment I would have reached it. But reading one book a day while doing a coding bootcamp, preparing a degree and then starting a new job was not really feasable.
Still, I've read more in 2019 than in any other year. 323 books ! Amazing !
It really was a fun experience. But also put a lot of pressure on what books I could read or not, particularly in the end of the year when I began to fall behind. I still decided to read what I wanted, but I think I won't do that kind of supercharged challenge because I want to be able to really chose my books and not think about what would be faster to read. (Also, kudos on people that read that much every year, it really is not easy with my way of life).
I've read many great books and some very bad but I'm pretty happy with my books this year overall. I'll maybe come back here and write a more in-deep review of my 2019 books. I tried to read more poetry and it was fun, I also tried to read more classics and that was fun too.
For 2020, my aim will be 150 book, less than 3 a week, totally reasonable with my context of life I think. But I'll aim for quality. And for diverse views. I'll also pledge for 95% books written by women or non-binary folks. That should shake thing up a little !...more

Other than the two girls fighting over the hero (who's not that impressive) and being obsessed with dating said hero (they are twelve), this is basically seen as obvious that the guy has to be the leader (which makes no sense when you know the characters' personnalities) and he also has to stop the girls from fighting over him. Felt like a weird fantasy. Yikes.
I'll continue my re-read until The Cold People, because this was my favorite as a kid, but if things don't improve, I'll stop there....more

And now they are on audible (it seems there is a tv show in production or something ? ) and I thought it would be fun to listen to it and see how well I remembered it.
To be honest, I mostly remembered general stuff : the main characters (did not remember Cindy was not in the first one), the witch, the ex-mayor-bum, the town being near to the sea... And I actually remember my favorite book, the one with the invasion of cold people that made me so scared when I was a kid.
Listening to this book while doing chores and cooking for my work week was pretty fun, even as an adult. I still love Sally most of all and remembered how I used her name as my first internet name back in the day (I also named one of my mice after her). Anyway, this is probably not a book a 32yo would love without the nostalgia attached to it, but I would totally recommend it for any kid that likes reading. ...more

And she had such a different voice. I really loved the first book I've read from her (The Haunting of Hill House) and was very curious about her short stories, a medium I really like. And I was not disappointed.
Mostly those stories seem to be about (weird) human interactions and I loved it. Those stories were so short and so intense and so different. It was the kind of little book you just can't forget.
The story "The Lottery", probably one of Jackson's most known, was totally scary in a non-supernatural way. I wish I could read that kind of perfect stories more often. Can't wait to read another of Shirley Jackson's books. ...more
