The beginning of the book is somewhat confusing with the chapters bouncing around between different characters. Iit was still fairly easy to figure out early on what was actually going on even though the author did her best to try and make it confusing. The bottom line is that crime does not pay, no matter how skillful you think you are.

It revolves around Renee Ballard and the cold case squad. Bosch’s daughter, Maddie, joins the squad early in the book. There are two cases being worked on. One is the Black Dahlia from the 1940s and a more current case involving domestic terrorists. The one major drawback to the book (and only those who live near the areas) is that he confuses streets and directions, in particular South Pasadena and Pasadena. Other than that is it an engaging and quick read.

The basis for the novel is the daughter taking over the law practice and a particular client from her father. While a good read, you can figure out who actually committed the murder about half way through the book.

The author’s writing style is very descriptive and demonstrates a deep understanding of the basis for the book. It covers three different characters covering two different locations. The plot revolves around two rivers – the Thames and the Tigris. The stories intertwine at various points and the author ties it all up neatly with the ending. Overall, a good read.

Like the other books in the series it weaves in a lot of the Ojibwe history, culture and beliefs. This one deals primarily with the disappearance of young native american girls and Anne O’Connor. It is an enjoyable and fast paced read. I recommend this book for those who enjoy reading mysteries that include native american culture.

This book begins immediately where the prior one (The Cabinet of Dr. Leng) ends. It ties up several loose ends from the prior novel and leaves open the door for future adventures. It is an engaging book which makes it a fairly fast read. I recommend this book for those who are fans of the Pendergast series.

The author does a very good job of weaving Amish beliefs into the solving of the crime. She also provides some historical background to a splinter group of the Amish that started in Europe in the 1500s. I look forward to reading more books in this series.

A caution for Baldacci fans – this book is not up to his usual standards. It is a stand alone novel and one of his periodic cause books which often do not match those in his various series. It is very predictable, the characters somewhat dull and uninteresting. There are several other novels on this theme that are way better than this one. To Kill A Mockingbird for one.
