George I have read this novel and a number of Brookner's other novels. A common theme is loneliness, some comments on other famous fictional works and life as a single career woman. Her later novels focus on retirement, independence and loneliness. I recommend Hotel Du Lac where some very interesting characters are introduced in a quaint hotel is Switzerland. I enjoy her style of writing. The characters are well described and her novels are fairly concise and generally no more than 230 pages. Good short reads that are always thought provoking and entertaining.
