Gideon the Ninth (The Locked Tomb, #1)

I've been sitting on this DNF for a couple months now. For those of you who are avid YouTube watchers of mine, you know I could not get through this book. I wasn't going to rate it but I feel SO strongly about this 1 star rating. This book suffers from the Tor hype as did The Ruin of Kings by Jenn Lyons which I also highly disliked. The writing is a mess. Characters names are "neiowhgiewongow"..
The main character is an absolute ass. She gets the chance to get off the planet and her literal response is “go suck a dick”
This book tried so hard to be edgy and goth, with skellies and DEAD DEAD DEAD and absolutely failed.

Ahhh! GIRL. Yes. I felt so damn similarly! I guess I'm not alone on my feelings about this! For me, it truly did feel like it was trying desperately to be so damn edgy & the writing just didn't pull it off. SO MUCH HYPE 😫😬
I just DNFed this book. I was looking at reviews and feeling terrible because I felt I was the only one hating it!. I just could not get into the story, I gave it a fair chance and wanted to like it so bad, but it did not happen. :(
I finished it, but only because I cared about the story and the characters. The writing is clunky and atrocious the whole way through. I was fine with the long names, Gideon being an ass, and the trying to hard to be edgy. But it felt like a rough draft of a story written in high school that never saw an editor or second draft before it got published. With all the continued hype for it and the sequel I've felt like I'm completely crazy and missing something. But I don't think I am. I'm glad at least one other review couldn't get through this
If I had DNF’d I think I’d have felt similarly, however I must admit the story does come together quite a bit at the end. If you have a chance I do think it’s worth polishing off.
Yeah. DNF. Interesting concept but you need either fleshed out characters OR a fleshed out setting and in this case both were just bones.
I'm going to disagree with Sophia Jannetty in that too me it felt more like a bit over halfway through the book the author went "eh screw it I don't know where I'm going with this either, here's a mystery thriller novella instead"
I tried to read it because yay Necromancers! But the writing is too juvenile and full of DnD tropes for me

Best word I've read all day. Thanks. 🤣🤣
I didn't finish the book either, I think the names may have contributed to that.

I finished it and it got better, but the ending wasn’t good enough to justify all the other bs. Good job walking away when something isn’t working for you. That’s what I normally do too, but this book had such good reviews, I was compelled to finish. Ugh. Overrated for sure!
One of my favorite booktubers didn’t like Gideon? Oh no, we officially have beef. Gideon is the one and only protagonist I’ve ever loved this fiercely (though Vi from Arcane is a very close second). I can’t believe how many people give this horrible reviews. Sure, it’s confusing, and sure, it’ll be dated from the memes. But this book has so much heart. And I’m sure Ianthe would eat that heart raw if she knew it existed. I guess my point is that I know it’s not for everyone, but I loved it and I will love it forever. I’ll never find another series quite like this, because literally no one else is Tamsyn Muir and can do exactly what she does. 💀🗡
