- A music professor is fired from his job for not knowing enough about modern "swing" music. He goes to Chicago to learn more about the subject in hopes of getting his job back, but he winds up getting mixed up with gangsters.
- Don Mallory is the younger brother of ace newsreel photographer Cliff Mallory, and is continually urging Cliff to let him become a cameraman rather than going to college. Cliff refuses. He is assigned to get some newsreel footage of heiress Betty Kelley, who has never been shot. She arrives at the airport accompanied by a phony Earl, to whom she is reportedly engaged, eludes the cameraman by dressing as the pilot and drives off before Cliff discovers the deception. She also destroys the film he shoots of her by sneaking into the Kelley's heavily-guarded estate. Don, with the help of his girl friend, Jean Roberts, fares better and while Jean attracts the attention of the guards, Don sneaks into the estate and makes off with the film, arriving back at the newsreel office in time to pass it off as Cliff's. When the film is released, Betty threatens a libel suit and finally buys the newsreel company as a compromise. She assigns Cliff to cover a baby parade. Meanwhile, the "Earl" finds himself in a dilemma. Instead of extracting money from the family, he is approached by Betty's father on a huge stock deal and, since the Earl is allegedly wealthy, he finds himself on the spot when Mr. Kelley marks him down for a $25,000 investment. His method of raising the money is to arrange for his confederates to rob a bank and he will go along as the gang leader. Don is in the vicinity and manages to film the robbery, and then eludes the gang. As the film is being ran in the projection room, disclosing the Earl as the robbery leader, the Earl and his henchmen arrive. A fast and furious battle ensues between the newsreel men and the gangsters, but Don and Cliff subdue them just as the police arrive. Cliff decides that Don's true calling is as a newsreel photographer. Fade to relief.
- Homer Tompkins, a trusting young musician with aspirations of becoming a radio star, is installed in a fine set of offices in Reno by a quartet of "easy money" con artists who have bugged rooms and suites, with the title of "professional listener", and he passes off what he hears to his employers--Lulu, Trixie, Maurice, and Champ--and they use the information for blackmail purposes. They also so involve his sweetheart, Toots, that he cannot withdraw even when he finally learns he is being used as a tool.
- A cowboy finds himself in jail for rustling cattle. His buddy gets the idea to form a lynch mob in the hopes of arranging his escape once the mob takes him out of jail. However, things don't quite work out the way he planned.
- A young reporter's grandfather wins a sweepstakes, but it turns out that his ticket is phony. The reporter finds out that the police are looking for the criminal ring responsible for the phony-sweepstakes racket, so he and his young brother set out to track down the gang responsible and expose them.
- An honest boxer refuses to throw a fight for a gambler. They get into a fight and the boxer knocks the gambler out.
- Texas Ranger Larry Graham (Kermit Maynard) goes under cover in a prison to help Ace Beldon (Maston Williams) break out. After they escape, Ace leads Larry to his hidden loot.
- A Treasury Department engraver is being held captive by a counterfeiting gang that wants him to make counterfeit plates for them. A lawman is sent to rescue him.
- A jockey transforms an injured colt into a champion Thoroughbred after saving it from the glue factory.
- A group of thugs tries to steal the cursed title gem from a jeweler who has been hired to cut it into small, saleable pieces.
- Jimmy Tallant, the care-free son of Senator Tallant, feels compelled to help people he thinks are in distress and, by doing so, stays in trouble of some kind.
- Sinclair has a government lease on range land that is about to expire. George Ringold wants the land and hires Roberts and his men. But they turn out to be a gang of killers and trouble soon arises.
- Dan O'Reilly, who has spent forty years working in oil fields, is about to strike oil when his land lease nears its end. J. C. Anderson of the Anderson Producing and Refining Corp. discovers that Dan's well is the richest in the history of Anderson's oil field, but because Dan's contract insures him a ten year additional lease if he strikes oil, Anderson tries to pay Dan to abandon his well. When Dan refuses, Anderson's men sabotage his drill. Penniless, Dan resigns himself to take the money, until his son Clifford, called "Fishtail," meets geologist Henry Langford, who promises to help. Henry then convinces Fishtail to go to school at night so that Henry can spend time with pretty schoolteacher Cynthia, who wants Fishtail to be the first O'Reilly to get an education. Then, when Henry discovers Anderson cheating the local independent contractors of a fair price for their oil, while unjustly foreclosing other leaseholders, he calls a town meeting. The townspeople confront Anderson, who appeases them, but the next day, while Dan rides the oil-drilling rig, the cables snap and he is killed. Henry is convinced Anderson is behind the murder. With two days left on the lease, Fishtail is nearly at oil sand when Anderson's thugs abduct Henry and Anderson tries to bribe Fishtail off the land. Fishtail refuses, so Anderson's men shut down the drill and knock him out. Henry, who has escaped, arrives in time to save Fishtail before Anderson's men dynamite the rig and the long-awaited oil is released. Cynthia, who has since fallen in love with Henry, then sends Fishtail to military school, and he returns a gentleman.
- When Bob Dillon finds gold, Reed kills him. Bob's brother Jim arrives to investigate his death. Avoiding the attempt on his life by Reed's gang, Jim confronts Reed's partner Jenkins. When Jenkins flees on Jim's horse, Reed mistakenly shoots his partner. Unable to get Jim with bullets, Reed blames the murder on him and when the Sheriff jails Jim it looks like he will soon be be hung.
- The owners of a lumber mill hire an investigator to find out who is sabotaging their mill. He discovers that the sabotage is being committed by the mill's manager, who is taking payoffs from rival mill owners. He devises a plan to expose the corrupt manager.
- Learning of Walters' inheritance, Larson kills him and assumes his identity. When Larson's men try to kill Walter's niece Lola, Jack Lane breaks it up. This leads to a showdown with Jack outnumbered by Larson and his gang. Having saved Loma's life earlier, he has Fuzzy ride for him and his men.
- A naïve farmer writing songs tries his chances in New York. Unlucky, he is helped by a crooner who lusts after one of his songs. Ignoring the real value of his composition, he sold it for the money he owed to his friends: $200.
- A man posing as Mark Henry is after Henry's oil land but Henry's niece is part owner and he needs to marry her off to his henchman Slager. Mountie Jim Sullivan arives posing as a wanted man and is soon caught up in the plot when Slager, wanting everything for himself, kills his boss and makes Jim a prisoner.
- A Mountie sets out to infiltrate and break up a gang of counterfeiters.
- An agent tracking down a man who disappeared in the mysterious "Ghost Mountain" area discovers discovers the hideout of a gang of murderous outlaws.
- A young, newly-appointed rookie state trooper, John Shields, is celebrating with his sister Jane and friends when they hear over the radio that two bandits have just killed a lawyer and his watchman.
- When the Mountie Sergeant returns murdered with a note that LaFarge did it, Trooper Burke sets out to after LaFarge. Working undercover, he saves LaFarge's life and this gets him into LaFarge's gang. He then arrests LaFarge and brings him in only to learn that LaFarge is not only innocent but is now a prisoner of the real killer.
- Three men escape from prison, go back to their hometown to try to find out who framed them.
- A rancher finds that his stock of horses is mysteriously being depleted, and discovers that a ranch near him has had a sudden upsurge in its horse population.
- When Jim and Scrubby arrive to see Scrubby's sister, they find her murdered and suspect it was her no good husband Jake. But Jake and his men have just robbed the stage and two dectectives arrive looking for them. Finding Jim and Scrubby instead, they assume them to be the outlaws and arrest them.
