Leonard Engelman, the esteemed makeup artist who worked on films including Rocky IV, The Princess Diaries, Batman & Robin and How the Grinch Stole Christmas and did Cher’s makeup for more than 30 years, has died. He was 83.
Engelman died Thursday at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, his wife of 42 years, artist Esther Engelman, told The Hollywood Reporter. The cause of death is unclear, she said.
The son of a Hollywood makeup artist, Engelman labored for a long time to convince the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to install a makeup branch, as those artisans had always been “at-large” members. And when it did so in 2006, he was elected its first governor. Later, he worked to have hairstylists added.
He also served as an Academy vice president and board member for many years.

The new "Daredevil" live-action TV series "Daredevil: Born Again" is not a continuation of the Netflix “Daredevil” TV series , but a fresh 'reboot' according to actor Charlie Cox, who reprises his role as blind vigilante crime-fighter 'Matt Murdock', streaming March 2025 on Disney+:
"It is a Season 1, it is not Season 4, so it is a whole new thing," Cox said. "Which I think is the way to go. If you are going to do it again, do it differently...right now I'm just buzzing that it's kind of happening again, it's starting up again.

Val Kilmer left no stones unturned when he wrote his memoir, I’m Your Huckleberry, which was released in 2020. With a title ripped off from one of his famous lines in Tombstone, the book was a brutally frank, tell-all tale of Kilmer’s life, including his love, loss, and regret. In one of his confessions in the book, the Batman Forever actor revealed his crush on co-star Angelina Jolie.

A few stars in Tinseltown shine as brightly as the revered Hollywood icon, Clint Eastwood, who has long been regarded as a respected veteran of the movie business. But have you heard the heartwarming tale of solidarity & respect that developed between Eastwood and Ron Howard, another giant of the silver screen whose directorial finesse often slips under the radar despite his stellar contributions?
Well, from Howard’s early days of playing Opie in The Andy Griffith Show to holding directing duties for Solo: A Star Wars Story, he has been a relentless force both in front of and behind the camera. However, it was not until the 1980s, when he collaborated with George Lucas on the cult film Willow, that he gained public recognition as a director.

After the March 28 friends, family, and industry screening for Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” at Universal’s CityWalk AMC in IMAX, reactions were wild. Some said it was his most ambitious film since “Apocalypse Now;” another described it to Puck as “batshit crazy.” Made for $120 million and bankrolled entirely by Coppola through the sale of one of his vineyards, it incorporates new VFX techniques — ones, the filmmakers hope, will be seen on the biggest screens possible.
For that to happen, it will need a major theatrical deal and the filmmakers are now in talks with distributors and major studios. However, those entities have been particularly risk averse these days — and while Coppola is a legend, he hasn’t made a commercial success in three decades.
The film’s stars include Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, and Giancarlo Esposito; maybe, say, Paramount or Universal want to be back in the Coppola business.

British actor Ralph Ineson is suing Disney in a suit that alleges he sustained injury filming a scene in fantasy TV show Willow.
The UK’s Sun newspaper reports that Ineson, 54, claims to have suffered permanent shoulder damage in a night shoot during the production in the UK of the Disney+ TV sequel to the hit 1988 movie.
His claim in the London High Court details that, on set in South Wales in July 2021, Ineson was dressed as a knight in armour and battling with a nine-foot-tall ogre called The Scourge when he fell awkwardly and dislocated his shoulder.
Ineson is now suing the Walt Disney Company Ltd for damages of up to £150,000, claiming that his injuries have prevented him taking on subsequent physical roles, with his ability to play roles involving fighting and horse-riding permanently impaired. Warwick Davis is the face of the “Willow” franchise, which kicked off in 1988 with Ron Howard’s fantasy film and continued with the short-lived Disney+ sequel series in 2022. Disney canceled the television series after only one eight-episode season, and then it pulled the show off of Disney+ entirely for cost-cutting measures. Davis is now calling out Disney on X (formerly Twitter), asking the studio in a recent post to answer the many fans wondering why they can no longer watch the show via streaming.
“I meet lovely people on a daily basis who are fans of ‘Willow,’ who are the reason the Disney+ series was made,” Davis posted. “Please tell me [Walt Disney Company], what do I say to these subscribers when they ask why they can’t watch the series any more? #embarrassing.”

Throughout the mythos concerning the character of Bruce Wayne aka Batman, there is a strong theme of predestination. While made explicit in only a few tales of the Dark Knight throughout the character's 84-year existence, there exists the idea that the orphan Bruce Wayne was able to mold himself into the figure of Batman partially because his whole life prepared him to do just that, mentally if not also physically and emotionally.
1995's "Batman Forever," the third in Warner Bros. and producer Tim Burton's series of live-action adaptations of the character, is one of the stories of the Caped Crusader that highlights this theme in a big way. In the film, Bruce (played by Val Kilmer) is troubled by recurring waking nightmares that psychiatrist Dr. Chase Meridian (Nicole Kidman) deduces are actually repressed memories forcing their way into his conscious mind. In these visions, Bruce recalls the moments after his parents' untimely deaths,...

The magical fantasy series “Willow” couldn’t conjure up a second season. Deadline reports that Disney+ has canceled the continuation of the 1988 film after a single season.
“Willow” premiered in November 2022. While it was well-reviewed, it received little fanfare and got a surprisingly minor marketing push for a special effects-heavy fantasy show based on a popular franchise. Its low-key release was perhaps a sign of what was to come.
The series was produced by Lucasfilm and served as a sequel to Ron Howard’s beloved film, which starred Warwick Davis as the titular sorcerer and Val Kilmer as a mercenary named Madmartigan who joins Davis on his quest to protect a baby princess named Elora Danan from an evil queen. Davis returned for the series, in which Willow aids a group of young people on their quest to rescue a kidnapped prince. The series also starred Ellie Bamber as adult Elora Danan,...

It looks like the much-hyped Willow series on Disney Plus will not be getting a second season. The news came down today via Deadline that the eight-episode series will not be returning, which maybe shouldn’t count as a massive surprise given the recent focus from Lucasfilm on Star Wars shows. Willow was always a more niche title, and while critics mostly liked the show (our own critic Alex Maidy adored it), the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes was a mediocre 66%. Indeed, the show never really captured the zeitgeist in the way a series like The Mandalorian did, although fans hoped perhaps it would build up some cult status over time.
Of course, just because Willow won’t be returning for a second season doesn’t mean the saga is over, as it’s possible Disney could go back to the drawing board and revisit the property in some way.

Willow‘s return was ultimately short-lived. Disney+ has cancelled the sequel series after just one season, TVLine has confirmed.
The cancellation comes just over two months after Willow dropped its Season 1 finale — now serving as a series ender — on Jan. 11. A follow-up to the 1988 film of the same name, Willow welcomed back Warwick Davis in the title role; new cast members included Ellie Bamber, Ruby Cruz, Erin Kellyman, Tony Revolori, Amar Chadha-Patel, Dempsey Bryk and Joanne Whalley.

Plot: With humans and fae folk divided and freedom on the line, each hero will face impossible dilemmas and soul-defining tests in the epic conclusion of Carnival Row.
Review: When Carnival Row premiered almost four years ago, I gave it a solid review based on the episodes I had seen. With quality production values and vivid mythology, I found the steampunk-inspired story to be intriguing. Most critics were not so kind, and, despite a quick second season renewal, the delays brought about by the pandemic also meant the sophomore season would be it’s last. While the final season of Carnival Row is two episodes longer than the first, the gap in between has allowed this season to broaden its scope and deliver a fairly epic conclusion to the story of the fictional country known as The Burgue and the war between humans and the supernatural beings that reside in the titular slum.

Regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation, Sir Ian McKellen had been a pillar of British theatre for decades before venturing to Hollywood. After his early days in London theatre, including a stint in the 1970s with the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company, he crossed the pond in 1981 to play Antonio Salieri in a Broadway production of "Amadeus" — and took home a Tony Award. The movies beckoned, bringing McKellen to a new level of fame that crested when he was tapped to play the wise and courageous wizard Gandalf in Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Meanwhile, McKellen also made headlines in 1988 when he came out as openly gay in 1988 and was then knighted by the Queen in 1991.

On the heels of the season finale of Lucasfilm’s all-new action-adventure series “Willow” based on George Lucas’ fantasy-adventure film, Disney+ has set a January 25, 2023 premiere date for the debut of its original documentary special, “Willow: Behind the Magic.” Featuring the series’ breakout stars and returning legends, the documentary takes viewers behind the scenes for an in-depth look at the making of the hit original series, which debuted on Disney+ November 30, 2022.
The story of “Willow” began when an aspiring sorcerer, played by Warwick Davis, is whisked away on a journey to protect an infant empress Elora Danan and vanquish the evil Queen Bavmorda from their world of Andowyne. Now, the story continues with Davis reprising his titular role as he leads an unlikely crew of heroes – which includes a now-grown Elora, who has just learned of her prodigious birthright – on a quest to protect Andowyne from an even larger foe than they had imagined possible.

Killer Collectibles highlights five of the most exciting new horror products released each and every week, from toys and apparel to artwork, records, and much more.
Here are the coolest horror collectibles unveiled this week!
Universal Monsters Bobbleheads from Neca
Neca will add four Universal Monsters to its Head Knockers line of bobbleheads in August. Priced at 34.99, Dracula, Frankenstein, Bride of Dracula, and The Wolf Man are made of hand-painted resin and stand 8″ tall.
The sculpts are pretty fun on these, although I’m not sure why the necks are comically long when Neca’s other bobbleheads don’t have that issue. The prototypes are pictured, so maybe they’ll iron that out before production.
B’Twixt Now and Sunrise: The Authentic Cut Blu-ray from Lionsgate
2011’s Twixt was an ambitious, if flawed, Gothic horror film from the great Francis Ford Coppola that failed to land with critics and audiences alike.

[The following story contains spoilers for Willow episode seven, “Beyond the Shattered Sea.”]
Willow star Ruby Cruz is proud to buck the conventions of what constitutes a Disney princess.
On Jonathan Kasdan‘s legacy sequel series, Cruz plays Princess Kit Tanthalos, the daughter of Madmartigan (Val Kilmer) and Sorsha (Joanne Whalley) from Ron Howard’s 1988 film, and early on in the series, she rejects her betrothal involving Galladoorn’s Prince Graydon (Tony Revolori). She can’t commit because she’s been in love with Erin Kellyman’s knight-to-be, Jade, for her entire life. As the series progresses, the two characters finally come to terms with their mutual feelings by declaring love for one another in the midst of a quest to rescue Kit’s brother, Airk (Dempsey Byrk).
For Cruz, one of the key takeaways from Kit’s arc is some much-needed humility as the world doesn’t revolve around her royalty.

Wales has long been regarded as a place of myth and magic – its national emblem is the dragon, after all, and it has strong links with the legend of King Arthur. So, it is fitting that Lucasfilm should have chosen it as the location for the Disney+ fantasy series “Willow.” The production was based at Dragon Studios in Bridgend, South Wales, and filmed at 32 locations across the country.
The Celtic nation has provided the locations for many iconic movie scenes over the decades, including the Bat Cave in “The Dark Knight Rises,” The Slaughtered Lamb pub in “American Werewolf in London,” and the castle in the opening scene of “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.”
Wales also hosted part of the shoot for Ron Howard’s original 1988 “Willow” movie, based on a story by George Lucas, and starring Val Kilmer, Joanne Whalley and Warwick Davis. The latter two actors reprise...

[This story contains spoilers for Willow episode five.]
With only three episodes remaining in the first season of Disney+ fantasy series Willow, the strong and determined knight-to-be Jade has seen her world completely turned upside down.
Played by The Falcon and Winter Soldier actor Erin Kellyman, Jade learns life-altering news in Willow’s episode five — her family wasn’t killed by the skull-donning Bone Reavers. They were Bone Reavers, and Jade has been lied to about her family history for her entire life. Welcomed back into the Bone Reaver fold as the long-lost daughter that has finally returned home, Jade embarks upon a new journey, one much different than the life of knighthood she had always imagined for herself.

As of this writing, Disney+ is halfway through releasing "Willow," a high fantasy series which tells the continued story of the 1988 film, also entitled "Willow." Although decades have come and gone, Warwick Davis returns in his titular role as the Nelwyn wizard. Joanne Whalley also returns as Sorsha, the princess who would become a queen. The series has left the story open-ended so that Val Kilmer may return as well, if his health permits. Old blood is well balanced with new, as Ruby Cruz, Erin Kellyman, Ellie Bamber, Tony Revolori, and Amar Chadha-Patel have joined the adventurous tale.
Behind the camera, the artistic team is equally mixed. Ron Howard, who directed the original "Willow," returns as an executive producer. Jonathan Kasdan, whose only prior experience with "Willow" is one of deep appreciation, serves as the showrunner, as well as one of the writers and co-creators. [This story contains spoilers for Willow episode four, “The Whispers of Nockmaar.”]
Tony Revolori never imagined that he’d be playing a prince in the Willow-verse, but he’s certainly here for it.
In Willow, the legacy sequel series to Ron Howard’s 1988 film, the California native plays Graydon, the unconventional prince who’s betrothed to Princess Kit (Ruby Cruz), the daughter of legacy characters Madmartigan (Val Kilmer) and Sorsha (Joanne Whalley). But instead of playing the dashing and courageous prince that has dominated most fantasy stories, Revolori’s character is intelligent and sensitive, often serving as the show’s “group therapist.”
However, in episode four, Graydon’s murky past begins to unveil itself as a flashback revealed that a young Graydon, while possessed by a malevolent force, murdered his older brother. To pull off this sequence, the series cast Revolori’s own brothers, Mario and Benjamin.

Photo: ‘Willow’ Everyone knows George Lucas because of ‘Star Wars.’ For good reason: when it debuted all the way back in 1977, the franchise changed special effects in films and the kinds of movies people go to see. However, it’s less known that five years before this, Lucas conceived of an idea for another movie, one involving magic and darker fantasy themes. That movie eventually got made 16 years later under the direction of Ron Howard. ‘Willow’ follows the efforts of one sorcerer (played to perfection by Warwick Davis) to protect an abandoned child in order to fight against the evil Queen Bavmorda (an incomparable Jean Marsh) and bring peace to the Kingdom of Tir Asleen. The story ended in a climactic battle that ended in Willow tricking the evil sorceress into banishing herself. The child, Elora Danan, fell into the hands of the Queen’s daughter Sorsha (played by Joanne Whalley...

Of all the life-changing cinema that premiered in the 1980s, Jonathan Kasdan singles out “Willow” as the first film to “mark time” in his existence. “It just had this psychological significance to me in my development,” Kasdan explains to Variety. “You’d be shocked at how many people say, ‘Oh, I saw that movie, it scared the shit out of me when I was a kid.’”

The original “Willow,” directed by Ron Howard and based on an original story by George Lucas, wasn’t a blockbuster at the box office in 1988, but did garner two Oscar nominations and a cult following. Its actors — in particular Warwick Davis’ Willow and Val Kilmer’s Madmartigan — left a lasting impression on live-action fantasy storytelling. So much so that “Willow” lore has permeated pop culture in unexpected ways, including a storyline in the acclaimed FX series “Reservation Dogs”.
This is precisely the audience that “Willow” episodic writer Jon Kasdan hopes to attract to the new “Willow” Disney+ series. However, like the characters, you’ll have to be patient and wander around the woods a bit before fully understanding the fuss.
The original film follows Willow, a young Nelwyn wizard-in-training who leaves his wife and children behind on a quest to return a lost baby to the Daikini of Tir Asleen.

In 1988, Jonathan Kasdan watched the fantasy adventure Willow for the first time at Westwood’s Regency Village Theater with his father and Star Wars screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan. Thirty-four years later, Kasdan — now co-writer and executive producer of the series reboot of the original film — returned to the very same theater on Tuesday for the premiere of Disney+’s Willow.
“It’s kind of like coming home,” executive producer Roopesh Parekh told The Hollywood Reporter. “I think what’s been key to the whole show, getting it off the ground but also getting to this point, is the love, passion and enthusiasm of Jon Kasdan. He’s sort of navigated this whole thing over the last four years. It’s been his dream to tell our story.”
“Without Jon, we wouldn’t have a series,” added Warwick Davis, who reprises his role as the eponymous Willow in the series.

The screenwriter of the original Willow film is reflecting on the process of making the movie, along with opening up about ways in which working in the writers room of the new Disney+ television reboot didn’t feel as freeing.
Willow, the tale of a humble farmer enlisted to go on a quest to save the world, hit theaters in 1988 — but the idea for the fantasy film had been on George Lucas’ mind even before the 1977 release of Star Wars. Lucas, an executive producer on Willow and credited with writing the story, brought the project to filmmaker Ron Howard, whom Lucas had directed in 1973’s American Graffiti.
Howard, who had helmed such movies as Splash (1983) and Cocoon (1985), turned to Bob Dolman, his collaborator on a failed NBC pilot in the early 1980s, to write Willow’s script. Its story focuses on the titular farmer,...

When you’re sequelizing an almost-35-year-old movie, awkward shoehorning is going to be part of the territory. In the case of “Willow,” there’s rationalizing why some cast members have returned while others haven’t, justifying the technical leaps in the time since, and adjusting what counts as a modern spin on a time-tested genre. The new Disney+ series, kicking off with an eight-episode season that extends into early 2023, almost seems to realize that all this is a required price for its own existence.
The opening episode of this TV version of “Willow” does all it can to thread the nostalgia needle, right from the opening minutes. The series kicks off with a recap that reduces the 1988 Ron Howard film to a “Previously on,” the first indication that the show is initially banking more on lore and familiar characters than recapturing the overall spirit of the original. True to form,...

Plot: The Nelwyn sorcerer returns, years after rescuing the infant empress Elora Danan, to lead a group of misfit heroes on a harrowing rescue mission through a world beyond imagination.
Review: Of all the sequels and continuations that I have wanted, few ranks as high on my list as Willow. As an eight-year-old, I saw Willow on the big screen based purely on being from the imagination of George Lucas. I was unprepared for the sword and sorcery and dark fantasy about to unfold on a scale I had not seen on the big screen before. Ron Howard’s epic direction, James Horner’s immortal score, and the performances of Warwick Davis, Joanne Whalley, and Val Kilmer had me absolutely blown away. Like Star Wars, for over twenty years I have been stuck with rumors of a possible sequel and only a trilogy of novels to take me back to the story of Willow,...

Returning to a beloved fictional world is one of the best feelings we can have as fantasy fans.
In the new Disney+ series Willow, we’re getting to do just that as showrunner Jon Kasdan continues the story established in George Lucas and Ron Howard’s delightful dark fantasy from 1988. Decades after Willow Ufgood saved the world from evil, this series follows the daughter of his allies Madmartigan and Sorsha as she enlists Willow to help find her kidnapped brother. Soon they’re on an escapade through the kingdom with a party of unexpected adventurers hoping to find the true empress, Elora Danan (the chubby baby from the original film).
If you want to know who’s who as you watch, we’ve got you covered as Kasdan and actress Ruby Cruz help us to walk through the new cast and their roles in Willow.
