When “The X-Files” premiered on Sept. 10, 1993 on Fox, viewers had no idea how incredibly bizarre the cases tackled by FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) would be.
Anything that was deemed paranormal, supernatural or unexplainable was called an “X-File” — the cases that no one else in the agency wanted to touch.
In the show’s 11 seasons, they dealt with more than just aliens and shadowy government conspiracies. Their cases involved demons, ghosts, serial killers, sea monsters and even vampires. Here are the episodes with the scariest villains and killer creatures.

A new show hits the air, and you’re hooked, counting down the days until the next season. Then, out of nowhere — Boom! — you find out your favorite show is canceled.
Before the age of streaming, plenty of beloved shows barely made it past one season. The usual culprit? “Low ratings.”
(Fox / Screenshot)
But often, networks were to blame. Maybe they stuck a great show in a terrible time slot or scheduled it against a ratings juggernaut on another network.
Sometimes, the show was too edgy or dark for network bigwigs or too complex for mainstream audiences to embrace right away.
In rare cases, fan campaigns brought a canceled show back for another season, but more often, it was game over.
If streaming had been as big back then as it is now, these shows — and their loyal fans — might have gotten the long run they deserved.

The X-Files is an iconic sci-fi series that has become a touchstone in the history of television. The show premiered in September 1993 and was the brainchild of Chris Carter, starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. As the ratings and audience’s interest rose, the show grew to prominence and became a cult classic.

Even the most popular and successful science fiction television series see changes to their main cast over the years. From the grueling schedule of long filming hours to trying to seek new opportunities in one's career, there are numerous reasons actors leave fan-favorite roles behind. Of course, there are also more dramatic reasons that actors quit shows, spilling tea on creative differences and behind-the-scenes struggles years after their departure. Even legacy sci-fi properties like "Star Trek" and "Battlestar Galactica" have their own stories of high-profile cast departures, even at the height of their run.
Below, we've assembled some of the biggest instances of actors quitting beloved sci-fi shows and explained why each chose to step away from their respective television projects. While some instances were more cordial and professional, some resignations reveal intense drama and tension behind the scenes. Just remember, even though sci-fi can depict idealistic utopias, the working...

Viewers discovering Homicide: Life on the Street, now streaming on Peacock, will note Det. John Munch’s (Richard Belzer) penchant for conspiracy theories. This may not have always been the case. The Baltimore murder cop may have gotten the bug while on duty at The X-Files for season 5’s “Unusual Suspects.” The flashback episode to the creation of the Lone Gunmen supplies origin stories to much of the science fiction series’ canon, including how Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) was initially infected with his unique brand of governmental paranoia.

Few people know the highs and lows of fandom experience quite like fans of "The X-Files." One of the hottest shows of the '90s was also one of the messiest, featuring retconned central mythology, a sizzling will-they-won't-they relationship that culminated mostly in vaguely implied hookups, and way too many Mulder-less latter season episodes. The show also features a surprisingly complicated release order, with two movies, a revival series, and one spinoffs.
When "The X-Files" fans reminisce about the show, they typically seem to be talking about the seven seasons that ran between 1993 and 2000, when David Duchovny's Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson's Dana Scully were on the hunt for aliens, monsters, and cigarette-smoking men week after week. But while it might be easier to cordon off the "simpler times" section of the show and call it canon, the fact remains that the official "X-Files" story doesn't end...

Growing up in the 1990s, I had two obsessions: Stephen King and "The X-Files." So when it was revealed that King, the master of horror himself, was going to pen an episode of the cult hit series, I was over the moon. Then I watched the episode. Sadly, King's "X-Files" ep, titled "Chinga," was not great. For one thing, it split-up Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson), which never goes well — the show needs these two working side-by-side, feeding off each other. If you don't believe me, just think about how the show went downhill after Duchovny left for a period, and how worse it got when Anderson started appearing in less episodes as well. For another thing, the story, about a haunted doll that forces people to harm themselves, fails to illicit much emotion. "The X-Files" could be a genuinely scary show, but "Chinga" is almost entirely scare-free,...

Although the truth is out there, David Duchovny keeps his feet firmly planted on the ground these days when it comes to outlandish theories.
The X-Files alum reflected on his time on the hit sci-fi series and how creator Chris Carter was “almost clairvoyant” in his depiction of the conspiracy culture that has taken over much of the country.
“Mulder’s way of looking at the world was through conspiracy and that was the fringe at that point,” he told The Times of his beloved character. “It doesn’t seem to be so fringe any more. It’s really the world that Chris Carter foresaw happening almost 30 years ago.”
Although he finds conspiracies to be “mostly just lazy thinking,” Duchovny doesn’t consider himself to be any more evidence-based than FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder. “Not at all. I’m an artist — I am associative-based and I see poetry as science and science as poetry,...

Did you know that while Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny fascinated audiences with their unquestionable on-screen chemistry as the iconic duo of The X-Files, there was, in reality, a notable tension simmering away from the cameras? Despite the underlying challenges, this dynamic pair brought FBI agents, Dana Scully & Fox Mulder, to life, delving into paranormal cases that had us on the edge of our seats.
Thus, viewers might assume that the two leads get along because of how long they have been working together, but that is not always the case. However, we obtained old footage of Anderson kissing Duchovny before her then-boyfriend at the 1997 Emmys, prompting many to speculate about the stars’ true off-screen relationship.

Mulder and Scully pop up in Stephen King's books from time to time — as a joke, a brief mention, or a gesture of respect for the cult FBI agents. Not surprisingly, the author once approached The X-Files showrunner Chris Carter with a request to write a script for an episode of the paranormal procedural.
The X-Files and King's works have a lot in common — not only an impressive imprint on pop culture, but also the principle of understanding the world by believing in the inexplicable.
Stephen King Wrote The X-Files Episode Chinga
The union was bound to happen one day. And it did, resulting in the episode titled Chinga, which, while not on a par with the truly iconic chapters of The X-Files, is still warmly remembered by fans.

Fox was less than a decade old when it launched The X-Files as the breakthrough show that would put the network on the map the way Twin Peaks had done for ABC. The X-Files was squeezed into a rather awkward time slot, sandwiched between other compelling TV dramas like Law & Order and ER.
But The X-Files pilot worked thanks to three factors: creator Chris Carter's bet on exploring viewers' belief in alien abductions, a brilliant cast, and the promise of being the first dark mystery show on cable. The mix gave the show a nine-year run, two feature films, and a two-season revival in the late 2010s.
The X-Files Is About to Receive a Reboot
Last year, it was announced that the X-Files reboot would be helmed by the director of two Black Panther films, Ryan Coogler, and Carter said his colleague has good ideas for a new project.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson’s The X Files is widely regarded as one of the best-ever shows created and aired on Fox. Even today, after around half a decade since its eleventh and final season aired in 2018, the 218-episode-long mystery/thriller drama series doesn’t cease to amuse its viewers with all the incredible storylines the writers and showrunners curated.

While, Hulu is not as flashy as some of the other streaming services like Netflix, Max, and Disney+, it has a solid library of shows that are both originals and licensed through various studios. Regarding sci-fi shows, Hulu doesn’t have any big names like 3 Body Problem or Westworld, but it makes up for that by carrying some great new and old shows like Devs and The X-Files, which were loved by millions of people. So, we thought of making a list of the best sci-fi TV shows you can find on Hulu right now.

Fans still couldn’t get over the terrible climax episode, My Struggle IV, of the eleventh and final season of The X-Files. While the show was a pop culture phenomenon, the show’s quality descended throughout the final seasons. However, the nail in the coffin was the controversial final episode where Dana Scully and Fox Mulder realized that William was not their child but an experiment. Further to make matters worse, Scully reveals that she is pregnant.

There was a mic drop moment at the end of an event in New York City celebrating 30 years of “The X-Files” when series creator Chris Carter reignited the debate around Dana Scully’s pregnancy.
Towards the end of “My Struggle IV,” the series finale episode in Season 11, Scully (Gillian Anderson) informs Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) that William (Miles Robbins) is not their son. He was an “experiment,” an “idea born in a laboratory” that she bore, Scully says. It’s completely subjective and relative now.“ Then went on to use Kate Middleton’s recent breaking news of her cancer diagnosis as an example when the public created a conspiracy theory about it, “Can you imagine, first of all, being sick — but then everyone’s got a take on it? The most private thing becomes the most public thing, and then the most misunderstood thing.”
Even with these new hurdles, Coogler’s reboot is still working its way forward, and although there are no details on what characters the reboot will feature,...

On Wednesday’s episode of the Today show, Gillian Anderson talked about Ryan Coogler’s rumored reboot of the long-running sci-fi series.
Anderson played FBI Special Agent Dana Scully on The X-Files from 1992 to 2002.
“It’s so funny because for most of my life, since I have finished The X-Files, every interview I do, people have asked and the answer has always been, ‘Nope, not going to happen, not going to happen,’” Anderson said. “Now, Ryan Coogler, who is the director of Black Panther — brilliant, brilliant director — has approached Chris Carter to say that he wants to do a take on it, and I cannot think of a better way around for a reboot to happen.”
Calling Coogler “a bit of a genius,” Anderson said that “there’s a chance [a reboot will] happen.”
She added, “Whether I am involved in it is a whole other thing. I’m not saying no. I...

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is developing a reboot of The X-Files, but the world has changed considerably since the original series debuted over thirty years ago, presenting a new set of challenges.
While chatting with Inverse, The X-Files creator Chris Carter spoke about the reboot and the difficulties Ryan Coogler will face with telling “conspiracy” stories. The original show arrived in the wake of Watergate and the Jkf assassination, but conspiracies have taken on a different tone in recent years. “Everything’s a conspiracy,” Carter said. “No one knows what the truth is. It’s completely subjective and relative now.“
Carter brought up Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, who recently found herself the subject of conspiracy theories following her surgery and public absence, later coming out to reveal she had been diagnosed with cancer. “Can you imagine, first of all, being sick — but then everyone’s got a take on it?...

For Fox, Gillian Anderson almost wasn’t foxy enough to lead “The X-Files.”
Series creator Chris Carter called out Fox executives that almost thwarted his casting of Anderson in the 1993 series. Carter told Inverse that they wondered “where’s the sex appeal?” when it came to Anderson in the role of FBI Special Agent Dana Scully. It is a bit unclear there if Carter was referring to the studio, the network, or both. She ended up testing for both.
“I wanted to take her before the studio and the network,” Carter said. “Even though Gillian’s beautiful, she wasn’t their idea of sexy. First, because they didn’t understand what I was trying to do with the show. And she was an unknown, so that never helps.”
Anderson’s “X-Files” co-star David Duchovny, who played FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder, was also a hard sell, according to Carter.

The phenomenal ‘90s drama series The X-Files is reportedly getting a reboot from Black Panther director Ryan Coogler. The legendary show became a worldwide phenomenon in the 90s due to its blend of investigative drama with supernatural elements. The show also skyrocketed actors Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny to global stardom.
While the new reboot is still in development, original creator Chris Carter mentioned how difficult it was for him to mount the show. He recalled an instance where he had to fight for Anderson to be a part of the series as the Fox Network preferred someone who would fit in their idea of s*x appeal. The network reportedly wanted someone like Pamela Anderson for the role of Dana Scully.

The X-Files creator Chris Carter is opening up about the early days of the seminal Fox sci-fi series, and opining on the challenges ahead for Ryan Coogler as he preps a reboot. “No matter what, he’s got a hard job,” Carter told Inverse in a recent interview. “Casting is a hard job. Mounting it is a hard job. All the problems that I dealt with are going to be his problems.”
One of the issues Carter recalled about the original series which first aired in 1993 was casting Gillian Anderson as FBI Special Agent, doctor and skeptic Dana Scully.
“I wanted to take her before the studio and the network,” Carter told Inverse. However, the network wanted a bombshell type. “Where’s the sex appeal?,” Carter recalled executives asking. “Even though Gillian’s beautiful, she wasn’t their idea of sexy. “The X-Files” creator Chris Carter is not involved in the upcoming reboot, which is being shepherded by “Black Panther” filmmaker Ryan Coogler. In a new interview with Inverse, Carter said he has no reservations about letting someone else put their stamp on his beloved franchise.
“It’s interesting, people say, ‘Aren’t you possessive of it?’ And I say, ‘No, I’m looking forward to seeing what somebody else does with it,’” Carter said, adding that he had a “really nice conversation” with Coogler when the latter first pitched his idea for an “X-Files” reboot to Fox.
“I just asked him what his ideas were, and he told me, and I said, ‘Those sound like good ideas,’” Carter said. “No matter what, he’s got a hard job. Casting is a hard job. Mounting it is a hard job. All the problems that I dealt with are going to be his problems.

Yes, The X-Files became a pop culture sensation in the 1990s thanks in part to some of the best monsters in television history — the sewer-haunting Flukeman and the mutant Tooms just to name two classics. But even more than that, the show worked because of the repartee between its leads, steadfast believer Fox Mulder and his skeptical partner Dr. Dana Scully.
Each week, we tuned in to watch the duo trade barbs and philosophical ideas as well as flirt. We loved to watch the rumpled David Duchovny mutter hilarious observations while Scully, played to perfection by Gillian Anderson, raised important and skeptical questions. Part of the fun of the show came from the romantic tension between the two, even before a 1996 Rolling Stone cover blew everyone’s minds.
But if the Fox Network had had its way, the make up of the iconic duo would have been very different. In a recent interview with Inverse,...

A Stephen King horror story about a malevolent (sort of) doll almost sounds like something that could've been written specifically for James Wan to turn into a movie. But while the filmmaker behind "Saw," "Insidious," "The Conjuring," and "Malignant" is indeed involved in adapting "The Monkey" -- a short story King wrote for Gallery magazine in 1980 before later including it in his 1985 collection "Skeleton Crew" -- for the screen, he's only lending his services as a producer.
Instead, "The Monkey" is being written and directed by Osgood "Oz" Perkins, son of "Psycho" actor Anthony Perkins and the mind behind such creepily atmospheric and inventively stylized horror pictures as "The Blackcoat's Daughter," "I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House," and "Gretel & Hansel". Osgood Perkins is also currently riding high thanks to the buzz around "Longlegs," his upcoming occult serial killer horror-thriller that boasts one of the most intriguing trailers in recent memory.

The X-Files: Fight the Future (watch it Here). Mulder and Scully on the big screen. That’s it. Need I say more? After 119 episodes, a movie was inevitable. While Chris Carter was happy with the success that the show had generated, he wanted to make more x-philes. Carter saw the movie as an opportunity to reach an even wider audience and make any skeptics true believers, but also reward current fans. Crafting a feature film also meant the ability to be able to dive deeper into the alien mythology that the series had been slowly weaving.
Making the leap from the small screen to the big screen was quite the undertaking. Carter explained that since they had been writing mini-movies, creating a full-length feature film felt like the next logical progression. Juggling the production of 24 episodes for The X-Files and another 24 for the spin-off Millennium was no easy feat. So,...

Chris Carter's 1993 TV series "The X-Files" is an undeniable staple of sci-fi television. However, it's also incredibly dated. It came out in the early years of the Bill Clinton administration, a few years after the end of the Cold War, right when Gen-x was growing up and America was experiencing something of an identity crisis. Without a war or a Great Depression to unite us, the sociological arguments went, America was culturally adrift. Having no enemies abroad to rally against, Americans began to look inward for enemies, sussing out where our violent impulses went. We found our own government to be suspect, and grew increasingly paranoid that a lot of dark information was being hidden from us.
In "The X-Files," '90s freeform paranoia manifested -- perhaps curiously -- as shadowy government conspiracies to cover up the existence of aliens, UFOs, and other unexplained paranormal phenomena. Only oddball FBI...

It was reported last month that Black Panther director Ryan Coogler would be reteaming with frequent collaborator Michael B. Jordan for a secret movie. Anticipation was high, with several major studios eager to snap up the project, but Deadline has reported that Warner Bros. has walked away as the victor following a heated bidding war.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the project has been described as a period thriller involving vampires, which certainly sounds exciting. It’s also said to contain a few anime influences, which isn’t a surprise as Michael B. Jordan is known to be a big anime fan. Ryan Coogler will direct the vampire movie in addition to penning the script, and will also produce through his Proximity Media banner. Coogler has worked with Jordan on each of his movies, including Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Most of the buzzed-about network dramas of the 1990s have been largely forgotten these days.
ER and NYPD Blue might have been the talk of the town during the Clinton years, but in the Biden age, they're seldom discussed outside of retrospectives about what the cast members are up to these days.
Interestingly, the network shows from that era that have loomed largest in the public's memory are the ones that might broadly be described as "supernatural mysteries."
We're talking about Twin Peaks, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and, of course, The X-Files.
In fact, one could argue that no network drama from the past 30 years has proved as enduring and influential as the saga of Mulder and Scully.
The X-Files ran for nine seasons and inspired two feature films, a spinoff series (The Lone Gunmen), and a 2016 revival, with a second reboot rumored to be in the works courtesy of Black Panther director Ryan Coogler.

Networks tend to be frustratingly unimaginative in their never-ending quest to find the next big thing on television. When "Lost" became a cultural phenomenon in the mid-aughts, it didn't inspire a wave of equally ambitious, thematically dense, and risk-taking TV shows. Instead, it led to a whole lot of copycat puzzle box series being green-lit, most of which only seemed to have a surface-level understanding of what made that show tick and failed to catch on.
So, as might be expected, when "The X-Files" ended its original run on Fox in 2002, the network went searching for a similar series to replace it. Three years later, it found one in Hart Hanson's "Bones," an investigative crime dramedy that was also about two co-workers in the shape of an emotionally closed-off woman and a man who wears his heart on his sleeve. The show's pilot even nodded to this by having...

"Bones" came along at just the right time to fill the hole left by "The X-Files." Chris Carter's semi-cult hit sci-fi horror investigation series wrapped up its original run on Fox in 2002, with nine seasons, a movie, and just over 200 episodes under its belt. Three years later, Hart Hanson would debut his own procedural on the network, with Emily Deschanel starring as the fact-minded forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan opposite David Boreanaz as the more emotional FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth. It didn't take a stretch to draw a line between the duo and "X-Files" FBI agents Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Fox Mulder (David Duchovny), from their near-identical personalities and dynamic to their evolution from platonic buddy team to romantic duo.

Nine months ago, The X-Files creator Chris Carter spilled the beans during an interview on the show On the Coast, revealing that a reboot of The X-Files was in the works, with Ryan Coogler at the helm. We haven’t heard anything about the project since then, not even an official confirmation… but if you were thinking maybe Coogler had set it aside, or the recent writers strike had killed it, Bloomberg assures us that’s not the case. In the article where they revealed that Netflix is working on a Wednesday spin-off that would center on Uncle Fester (which was later confirmed by other outlets), they mention, “Disney is developing a new version of X-Files that would be produced by Ryan Coogler, the director of Black Panther and Creed.” So it sounds like this reboot is still moving forward.

It’s been five years since “The X-Files” wrapped up its two revival seasons, with a planned animated series scrapped earlier this year. So what’s next from the world of “The X-Files”?
According to a new report from Bloomberg this week, Ryan Coogler (Black Panther) is still attached to produce a brand new version of “The X-Files,” which franchise creator Chris Carter had first teased earlier this year. The site reports, “Disney is developing a new version of The X-Files that would be produced by Ryan Coogler, the director of Black Panther and Creed.”
Carter had previously teased the new series would feature “a diverse cast.”
Stay tuned for more as we learn it.
“The X-Files” originally ran for nine seasons from September 1993 to May 2002, with tenth and eleventh seasons arriving in 2016 and 2018. In total, 218 episodes were made.

Two days ago, Dan Marfisi, a longtime musician and songwriter in the L.A. area, received a text from a composer friend. “He wrote, ‘Did you write this song on The X-Files?’” Marfisi says. “He said, ‘You should go to Twitter and check out these threads. You’ll be a hero.’”
Marfisi had no idea what his friend was talking about, but when he went online, he learned that more than a few people have been trying to unearth information about a piece of music he co-wrote 25 years ago — and had barely thought about since.
