Barbie star America Ferrera is no stranger to big franchises. Before appearing in Greta Gerwig’s ode to womanhood and in NBC’s beloved sitcom Superstore, Ferrera got her start on a very relatable ABC primetime soap Ugly Betty.
First premiering in 2006, Ugly Betty ran for four season on network television and built up a devoted fanbase. The series, which is now streaming on Netflix, starred Ferrera as the titular “Ugly” Betty Suarez, a braces-wearing 22-year-old fashion neophyte from Queens. The show follows the awkward Betty as she lands a job at high fashion magazine Mode in Manhattan wear she works as a personal assistant under failson editor-in-chief Daniel Meade (Eric Mabius).
Ugly Betty was a lovely little series chock full of both drama and thoughtful commentary on how young women are expected to navigate their personal and professional lives. If that sounds like the kind of thing that would...

Pantaleon’s animated film Un Rescate De Huevitos (An Egg Rescue) is a rarity in the specialty box office as a Spanish language animated film. And its opening weekend success will certainly come as no surprise in Mexico where the franchise is its highest-grossing film series to date.
The Spanish-language animation performed tremendously at its 320 locations, averaging over $1,300 per screen—a solid achievement for an animated kids flick. With Sunday’s numbers in, the Alatriste brothers-directed film will have grossed $430K in its opening weekend. Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and Austin areas were Rescate’s best markets.
Un Rescate De Huevitos is a sequel to 2015’s Un Gallo Con Muchos Huevos (A Rooster With Many Eggs) and the fourth film in the Huevos franchise overall. The latest tale follows a rooster named Toto (Bruno Bichir) who goes on a rescue mission to free his egg children Max and Uly...

Times Square in New York will be closed to the public Thursday night for New Year’s Eve celebrations, the first time there won’t be a crowd at the iconic locale on December 31 since the first ball drop in 1907 (the first celebration at One Times Square in Manhattan was in 1904). The Jenni Rivera movie is coming soon.
Director Francisco Joel Mendoza is ready to start filming biopic “La Diva de la Banda” in April, California daily La Opinión reports.
It’s still not clear who will play the leading role, Mendoza said during an appearance on Univión’s “El Gordo y la Flaca,” though he tossed around the possibility of Jennifer Lopez or Angelica Vale.
But Mendoza says he’s already overcome one major hurdle -- acquiring the permissions he’ll need to use Rivera’s name in the film.
“Jenni Rivera” is a registered trademark, according to Hoy Los Angeles. The late singer’s father, Pedro Rivera, said he’d sue anyone who attempted to make a buck off his daughter’s death by using her name without permission.
Mendoza says he had to seek permissions in Mexico and the United States to begin filming.

Univision has produced a new telenovela for web and mobile devices, adapting this staple of Spanish-language programming for the tablet age.
Univision has just wrapped filming on a new telenovela meant to be streamed on the web and mobile devices. The series, called "No Me Hallo" ("Finding Myself") stars Angelica Vale, a major Mexican star who held the title role in "La Fea Más Bella," one of the inspirations for "Ugly Betty." It concerns a musical artist whose husband/manager leaves her, and will "air" in 15 mini-episodes, each three to five minutes long.

The 2010 World Cup, new novelas and reality shows all play key roles in Univision's program development for the 2009-10 season, the network said late Thursday.
The World Cup, originating from South Africa in June-July 2010, will be featured on all three Univision networks, with 56 live games airing on the flagship net and another eight contests airing on sister network Telefutura. Both Telefutura and sibling cable network Galavision will rebroadcast 52 World Cup matches.
"Year after year, Univision broadcasts many of the most watched programs, which on many nights outdeliver its English-language network competitors," said Ray Rodriguez, president and COO, Univision Communications Inc., in a statement.
