Jessica Kirson is bringing her unfiltered humor to Hulu.
Though a premiere date is being kept under wraps, the veteran comic has inked a deal for her next hour of standup. It marks Kirson’s second special.
“I am honored to be a part of the Disney family and that Hulu has chosen to feature my next special as part of their comedy initiative,” she said in a statement. “People always ask me ‘is it hard to be a female comedian?’ I always say, ‘I don’t know; you should ask them.’”
The news comes as Hulu makes an aggressive push into the standup space, elbowing its way into an increasingly frothy market that’s been dominated by Netflix in recent years. The initiative, which is dubbed “Hularious,” kicks off in November with a new Jim Gaffigan special. From there, the streaming platform will roll out monthly specials, from acts including Bill Burr,...

The Broad City alum will debut her second special, Human Magic, on the platform Dec. 20. The hour, which Rotten Science and Starrpix will produce and Jeff Tomsic is set to direct, was taped in early May in Toronto. It will air internationally on Disney+.
The new hour arrives a month after Jim Gaffigan’s November special, which will kick off Hulu’s monthly stand-up initiative, which it’s dubbed “Hularious.” The platform has also lined up hours from Bill Burr, Daily Show vet Roy Wood Jr. and, pending deals, Sebastian Maniscalco, Atsuko Okatsuka and Jessica Kirson. FX is stepping into the standup comedy ring, with comedy specials from Kate Berlant and Byron Bowers to premiere exclusively on Hulu on Sept. 15, the network announced.

Bo Burnham directed the special, which was filmed in 2019. He’s also attached as an executive producer alongside recent Emmy winner Jerrod Carmichael (“Rothaniel”), Chris Storer (“The Bear”) and Jeff Tomsic. “Kate Berlant: Cinnamon in the Wind” is produced by Rotten Science.

Amber Heard hasn’t yet taken the stand, but Joe Rogan has taken a side.
Rogan and guest Jessica Kirson, a fellow comedian, opened Tuesday’s episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience” riffing on what we’ve seen so far of Johnny Depp’s defamation trial against his ex-wife. From the way Rogan characterized it, he doesn’t believe Heard’s claims about abuse at the hands of Depp – or much of anything else the “Aquaman” actress says.
“I’m watching this trial, and like, it’s a cautionary tale,” Rogan said, beginning with a critique of their tempestuous relationship. “About believing in bullshit, forming a narrative in your head like, ‘We’re rebels together.’ That’s what I felt like about Anthony Bourdain and his relationship to that crazy woman … you’re seeing all the crazy come out.”

The FX documentary Hysterical spotlights a number of fierce female comics who share their experiences of breaking into a field that has traditionally marginalized female comedians in favor of their cis white male counterparts. The women share their accounts of their hard-fought journeys to become the voices of their generation and their gender.
“Who better to spend time with and document than the very people who are always breaking boundaries? That’s what comedians do,” said director and executive producer Andrea Nevins, who was joined on the Hysterical panel at Deadline’s Contender Television: Documentary + Unscripted awards-season event by executive producer and stand-up comic Jessica Kirson and comedian Marina Franklin, one of the many comics featured in the documentary.
For Kirson, the onset of the #MeToo movement provided the perfect opportunity to share their stories.

Michael D. Ratner directed the YouTube Originals docuseries, which will look at Lovato’s awakenings following her 2018 overdose and her return to music. Ratner was granted unprecedented access to the pop star’s personal and musical journey.
“It’s impressive and rare to see a pop superstar tell their story so authentically and without pretense,” said Janet Pierson, director of film at SXSW. “We’re privileged to present this intimate journey told with such vulnerability. Demi Lovato’s profound interest in mental health awareness is helping change the landscape of a crucial issue in this year of national and international trauma and loss.”

An Officer and a Gentleman, The Devil’s Advocate and Ray are just three of the movies in director Taylor Hackford’s illustrious career, although his one Oscar was for a short film he made much earlier in his career.
For Hackford’s latest movie, The Comedian, he directs Robert De Niro as Jackie Burke, a veteran comedian and star of a popular old TV sitcom, who is trying to find a new lease on life, which actually ends up with him being thrown in jail for assaulting a heckler. While doing community service, he meets Leslie Mann’s Harmony and he shares with her his love for stand-up, although her father (Harvey Keitel) doesn’t approve of the relationship.

Actress Leslie Mann is an absolutely lovely person to talk to if you ever get a chance. To many, she’s become better known as Mrs. Judd Apatow and the mother of two daughters who have famously stolen scenes from her in his comedies Knocked Up and This is 40. In fact, she’s been a fairly active comedic actress for quite some time and since her last movie with her husband, she’s appeared in movies like The Bling Ring, How to Be Single, The Other Woman and more.
For The Comedian, a new comedy directed by Taylor Hackford (Ray), Mann is paired with Robert De Niro as the love interest to his stand-up comic Jackie Burke, who meets her character Harmony Schultz when he’s at a low point in life, forced to work at a soup kitchen as community service for attacking a heckler. Jackie and Harmony...

There wasn't a telephone in sight. For the inaugural celebration of the goofy and good-hearted Red Nose Day in America, NBC invited seemingly everyone in Hollywood to hang out at New York City's own Hammerstein Ballroom for three hours in an attempt to "be funny for money" — and it didn't require a single participant to awkwardly answer a phone on stage in order to collect donations.

Melissa Etheridge weighed in on Angelina Jolie’s double mastectomy announcement and confirms that she and Linda Wallem are still going strong. When asked to comment about Jolie’s big news Etheridge said, “I have to say I feel a little differently. I have that gene mutation too and it’s not something I would believe in for myself. Pink rocks a suit on the cover of Elle Canada. Why is she screaming? Did she not want to have her picture taken?
Glee's Jane Lynch teamed up with Amy Poehler and Jessica Alba for the comedy A.C.O.D., due out in theaters next year. I can't wait!
Speaking of Amy Poehler, she and a few of her famous friends, including Sarah Silverman, Olympia Dukakis and Meryl Streep, star in this PSA for DrawTheLine.org.
Want to vacation with Melissa Ferrick (and hundreds of lesbians)? Then book your trip to the Hard Rock Vallarta in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. Ferrick, Natalia Zuckerman, Edie Carey and Shann Carr will keep you entertained from April 7-14.

A new trailer for the comedy This is 40 has arrived starring Leslie Mann, Megan Fox and Melissa McCarthy. And here's a little bit of trivia: Big Gay Sketch Show's Nicol Paone plays an ER nurse in the film.
Ruby Rose has a doppelganger, or two.
I've been told about 10 times that I remind people of Kylie and Dani Minogue. Hilarious. I have never heard that before! Nowhere but London.

"The idea was comedy for women, but it's not like a 'Cathy' cartoon; it's way hipper."
That's how "The Office" star Kate Flannery describes her new all-female stand-up show, "StandUp In Stilettos," coming to the TV Guide Network this month. The show's 12 episodes will feature 36 women, three per episode, performing comedy in front of a live audience. Flannery hopes the easily digestible segments will expose the Guide's browsers to quality comedy of the female variety.
"It's a nice intro for people who might be closed-minded about women in comedy," Flannery said in an interview. "I cannot believe that in all the years that there have been female stand-ups, there has never been a show just for them. The girls can play just as hard as the boys, so I think it's long overdue."
And based on the first (and as of writing, only) comment on the show's preview video on YouTube,...
