“Imperiled women” thrillers have changed a lot since their early days, but no matter how much they’ve evolved, they always seem to start with a woman being watched by a stranger. The first in a series of original movies for Tubi’s “Terror on Tubi” event, Alone in the Dark centers around a woman haunted by a recent scandal. Between legal troubles and a messy divorce, Bri Collins (Novi Brown) hasn’t had an easy time, though if she can make it through this year, her life might finally improve.
Alone in the Dark takes a page out of Disturbia and sentences its protagonist to 365 days of house arrest. This comes after Bri and her former husband Michael (Christopher Bencomo) were put on trial for a global “pump and dump” scheme. While her ex is stuck behind bars, Bri serves her time at their lake house. What her best friend and lawyer,...

Hey, "Empire" fans. Unfortunately, we have some pretty bad news to deliver in this article. It turns out that it's that time of year again where your favorite show is going to have to take a back seat to Fox's coverage of the Major League Baseball World Series. Yep, that's right. The upcoming episode 5 of this current season 4 is getting delayed for a possible two weeks! It's definitely not going to air next Wednesday, October 25,2017 due to Fox covering the big Game 2 of the World Series. What could make this even worse is if the series is driven to seven games. In fact, it just happened last year causing Empire to be delayed for two weeks. We certainly hope that doesn't happen this year, but...

Empire is going all the way with Jamal’s new squeeze.
Terrell Carter — who made his debut as Dubois scion Warren last May — has been bumped up to series regular ahead of Wednesday’s Season 4 premiere (8/7c, Fox). In the Season 3 finale, duplicitous Lyon-hater Diana DuBois (Phylicia Rashad) dispatched her attorney-musician nephew to seduce Jamal (Jussie Smollett). How will Diana react when Warren (inevitably) develops real feelings for Jamal? And what will Jamal do when he discovers that his new boyfriend is actually a dreaded Dubois?

After 16 long weeks of backflips, pliés and high kicks, So You Think You Can Dance reached the end of its 14th season on Monday night, at last bestowing the title of America’s Favorite Dancer upon one of the four finalists.
But before we could find out whether Koine, Taylor, Lex or Kiki was the Season 14 champ, Sytycd stayed true to its finale form, offering up a two-hour stroll down memory lane before unleashing a confetti shower upon the eventual winner.
In the meantime, here’s how those 120 minutes were filled:

Thankfully, not Ryan Seacrest!
I started watching the premiere of Fox’s new singing competition reality show The X Factor with the obvious question: Could this formula work? Would a show starring Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and two other judges evaluating the singing skills of young contestants click with audiences?
That’s some risk factor there, X Factor!
That being said, I’ll admit it: I liked The X Factor. There is some ace emotional manipulation going on in the editing room, but it’s happening alongside some undeniably talented singers who killed it onstage. And, of course, some who didn’t. Because what fun would it be if everyone was good?
Cowell and Company have also raised the stakes: the contestants are vying for a $5 million recording contract. Take that, Idol.
There’s also been one vast improvement from the American Idol blueprint: No Ryan Seacrest!

Some "American Idol"-esque music welcomes us to "The X Factor," though the graphics belie aliens are invading the Earth. The judges arrive at the first location and the audience goes predictably nuts.
Los Angeles
The first person we see is 13-year-old Rachel Crow. Well, seeing as how she's first and really young, I'm expecting big things. She hilariously talks about how her family has no money, which isn't funny but she's funny. She sings "Mercy" and even though her dance moves are super dorky, her voice is pretty great. It's not seasoned, but for a 13-year-old girl it's spectacular and the seasoning will come. Obviously she is through - Simon says she's the reason they were right to take the age limit down.
Check out Rachel's performance here.

Detroit’s Soul Kitten’s Cabaret is a haven for battered women, women who are running from their pasts and frightened of the future. When newcomer Brandy (Sarallison Duke) makes her way to the Cabaret, she causes an uproar among the veteran women of the club. Brandy immediately grabs the attention of handsome Mike the bartender, who is drawn to her innocence. Soon, sassy Bianca (Chrystale Wilson) takes the young girl under her wing, teaching her how to strut her stuff and exploit her body for tips. She becomes just as jaded as the rest of the Cabaret girls, all of whom have lost themselves along the road to success. When rival club owner Frank threatens to bring an end to the Cabaret, the girls must band together under their director TaTa Burlesque to save the club. Along the way they rediscover the importance of self love, hope and sisterhood.

Diary of a Mad Black Woman
"Diary of a Mad Black Woman" is a strange hybrid, part romance-novel melodrama and part broad sketch comedy. Even more strange is that, in an awkward split-personality way, it works some of the time. Cutting through the schmaltz of the wronged-woman scenario are glorious third-act gospel contributions and the comic shenanigans of scripter-producer-actor-composer Tyler Perry. Despite its over-the-top sensibility and uneven performances, "Diary" has sleeper potential along the lines of last year's "Woman, Thou Art Loosed", which also toplined the dexterous and gifted Kimberly Elise.
Perry's script, based on his grassroots-hit play, paints emotions and character types with broad strokes. The soap-opera setup is ludicrous, but debuting feature helmer Darren Grant finds a certain groove for the material as inspirational, blessedly non-preachy entertainment. Even when grappling with matters as weighty as anger, forgiveness and faith, one of the film's endearing qualities is its refusal to take itself too seriously -- which would be hard to do with Perry in drag as the main character's grandmother.
Helen (Elise), the starry-eyed wife of respected attorney Charles (Steve Harris), endures his outrageous cruelty with such equanimity that she seems to have been beamed in from 1952, or maybe another planet. Her measured diary entries, heard in voice-over, cut the cad way too much slack. Helen is sympathetic only because Charles is such a creep; she's an empty shell whose only interest is being a perfect wife. Helen's happily-ever-after fantasy shatters when, on their 18th anniversary, he physically tosses her out of their Versailles-size Atlanta estate, his evil girlfriend (Lisa Marcos) at his side.
As Helen travels the bumpy road to self-knowledge, Grandma Madea is a crucial emotional support. The strongest of three characters Perry plays in the film, Madea's a straight-talking, pistol-packing voice of righteously funny anger. Perry's other roles are crotchety, pot-smoking Uncle Joe (less of a hoot than he's meant to be) and Joe Son's Brian, a good-guy lawyer who's given up on trying to help his estranged junkie wife (Tamara Taylor).
Madea snaps Helen out of her pining and into working-class reality, with time out for sweet revenge. Offering a more forgiving brand of wisdom are Helen's mother (Cicely Tyson) and new love interest, Orlando (Shemar Moore), a Harlequin-cover hunk with a heart of gold. Real-life concerns aside, the film definitely believes in fairy tales. But the story takes a few extreme turns on the way to romantic bliss. Just when Helen seems too saintlike to be true, her pent-up fury toward her ex emerges in a huge way. Elise is up to the melodrama, from refined and repressed to fierce and vengeful.
For all its false steps, "Diary" is refreshing in the way it explores the burden of anger and matters of faith without being cloying or judgmental. Technical contributions are OK within the budget's constraints. And a spirit-shaking, roof-raising gospel performance -- courtesy of Taylor, Terrell Carter and other extraordinary singers -- could have moviegoers on their feet.
